“I wish to suggest that my topic, “The Future of Work: Technology and Humanity”, is one for urgent scrutiny by the leaders of Barbados in every sector, and both the army of occupation currently at the top of Broad Street, in Bay Street and Warrens, and to be frank, in the context of the touch word today “innovative”, they are hardly that.

Questions therefore arise as to, can we somehow pivot amidst the challenges of a changing world — in the so-called Fourth Revolution, the technological age — to reposition Barbados, to reap benefits and set the stage for our people to have a better life?”

    No need to be sorry.
Your Blog is a discussion vehicle through which each commenter shares his/her views. I do not think we have to agree or seek each others permission to have a contrary position. At the end of the day our aim should be to generate more light than heat .
Sometimes we allow our affiliations to cloud our logic and encroach upon our normal scientific objectivity.

To make meaningful progress we need to avoid transferred epithets. There will be occasions when ideas are assinine; BUT there is no need to transfer the description of the seriously flawed idea to the promoter of the idea.
May I suggest to some commenters that they review their concept of education in the light of what should be its deliverables.
Very often we buy into concepts that emanate elsewhere without reference to our own special circumstances.

Finally there is a big difference between Education and Training. Bigger than the difference between a legal education and competence in the practice of law. Similarly there is a gap between the theory and practice of education/ economics/ politics etc.etc.etc.

I hope you get my drift.

The miseducation system existing on the island must be overhauled, the next generation will not function adequately in an archaic system designed to disenfranchise, stagnate and brainwash generations of young minds and their future generations, this is will not go away, as it will not continue to be tolerated….something has to give.

The island is currently sinking to the lowest levels imaginable because of this chain reaction degradation….. trying to attach pretty words to explain it away will not prevent the decline…

….. who wants to live in their slave minded lala land of yesteryear are free to, but sanity will prevail..

  3. Cell phones & tablets are machines. If these machines are used/ applied appropriately they can improve productivity & efficiency.
Paper based books in our school system should be replaced by a eBooks. Ebooks allow you to store , process / transmit information digitally , saving time & money.
The paper industry is linked to deforestation , global warming & generation of large amounts of waste. A large amount of money is wasted on buying paper, printing books , transporting books , maintenance & storage. The teacher doesn’t need to run from one institutions to the next to do a class. He/She can teach classes in multiple locations simultaneously with the use of technology, lectures can be stored for later use, demonstrations can be done in high resolution video. The educational system can become 24 hr/360 day system where access to lectures & utorial, are always available.

Technology is all around us & more emphasis has to be placed on it.
Training in renewable technology in secondary / tertiary level is needed.
The internal combustion engine will be banned in a few years, the Polytechnic & other institutions need the start training urgently so we can convert our buses , cars, boats ,etc to an electric drive train.
We have to transition our country from oil based to electric.Oil is causing pollution, disease & conflict across the globe.Solar energy , combined with new battery technology (lithium/vanadium flow batteries) & electrification of our transport is the way forward.
Drone technology can be employed to provide solutions in security , postal service, farming, etc.
Our farm have to employ new technology to improve efficiency, solar panel can be employed on farm land also smart lighting ,electric tractors & other solutions. The possibilities for the country are numerous & new areas of employment will be created.

  6. What is the way to proceed for the individual then?
I think it is clear that we are facing great volatility in the next 5-50 years. Collectively we need to figure out how to respond to the increased rate of disruption and create new policy instruments and institutions related to education, taxation, business regulation, and welfare provision.
But what is it that I can personally do to maximise my potential in these uncertain times?
