A few years ago Minister Michael Lashley was the starboy of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). He was complimented for expanding the housing stock, exponentially. He ensured Barbadians erased Liz Thompson’s ‘bumblebee’ prototype from memory. Years later many of the houses built by Lashley with tax dollars are unoccupied or rotted. If we include the Coverley PPP it gets worse. A few years later Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley will be recorded in a political footnote as having presided during a period where the state of Barbados roads deteriorated to a level slightly above a cart road.

Of concern to the blogmaster though are observations arising from the waning LEC debate.

Some are of the view now that the LEC debate is behind us, more important issues will be have the space to fuel discussion. What they fail to acknowledge is that the political principals who waylaid Barbadians with the manufactured issue of Mia’s LEC are also responsible for informing and leading the country on the pressing issues of the day.

In his Sunday Column – The Jeff Cumberbatch Column–Non – litigious Resolution of Defamation LawsuitsJeff Cumberbatch shared his view on the LEC matter:

To the best of my knowledge and belief, Ms Mottley has been duly admitted to the local Bars, both Utter and Inner. Unless and until she is removed therefrom or otherwise disbarred by appropriate procedure she remains duly admitted. Omnia praesumuntur rite esse acta [Apologies for the Latin] It means that there is a presumption that acts done through the court are rightly and properly done.

The outcome of the recent court case Mia Mottley vs Barbados Today confirmed that Mia Mottley is qualified to practice law in the Courts of Barbados.

What Barbadians must reflect on is why did the Prime Minster of Barbados- a seasoned lawyer and former Attorney General- not have the knowledge of the law and procedure related the LEC issue. One must assume he did not know because he said nothing.

Although the Attorney General is a legal neophyte and light weight he had the resources of the Solicitor General’s office and other state resources to have been equipped to clarify the LEC matter in  less than 24 hours. Some should recall he promised on the floor of the House of Assembly to investigate the matter. A promise he failed to keep. One must assume he dis not know.

Then there is Hal Gollop, better known to the BU household as a school teacher and musician, who prosecuted the LEC matter recently at a DLP political meeting. What has his failed LEC argument done to injure his reputation as a lawyer? Clearly he was party to a political plot to ‘decapitate’ the leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) a few months from a general election. One must assume he misinterpreted the relevant laws and procedures related to the LEC issue.

The challenge Barbadians face is that we have an obsturate political directorate whose members are willing to crash the economy on the altar of political expediency. Why should intelligent Barbadians expect that this government is able to appreciate what rising oil prices will do to the economy? We are a country with a DEBT to GDP ratio of close to 150% and foreign reserves  cover of 8 weeks. Despite the current state of the economy this inept lot prefers to try to hoodwink Bajans by floating a silly debate anchored to Mia’s qualification to practice law in Barbados.

Imagine if Stuart, Brathwaite and Gollop were able to put heads together to promote a component of transparency legislation promised from day one? Wasn’t Gollop contracted to draft a roadmap to assist with moving Barbados to a Republic? Didn’t Stuart and Brathwaithe promise to examine existing to electoral laws to address what they admitted to irregularities that occurred last general election?

  1. Rather than worry about an LEC, what we should be talking about and worrying over is that WhatsApp/Facebook/NakedDeparture query and photo of the $2.5M house at Lot 91, St George that someone in the construction industry/auto racing fraternity allegedly built for a minister in government who has shown time and time again that he is grossly unqualified for the position he holds. What we should be asking is if his mother died and left him millions of dollars too or if through his skillful investment moves, he was able to parlay his meagre ministerial salary into such massive wealth. If the latter, maybe he could turn some of these investment skills into balancing the economy of the island.

lol…what parlay for what economy what, they are all selfish, greedy and corrupt and parlay for themselves.

let`s see them maintaining those same overly expensive, lavish lifestyles once the electorate kicks them out of parliament.

they should ask Muscle Mary how the payments on his plantation mortgage are going all these years…since he no longer has access to the people`s finances or connections, they even refused him a US work visa…they all think no one knows the self serving things they do….ha

  3. @Fractured,

I am so glad that certain persons have their LEC’s. After May next year, they will need them, unless they are over 50 and getting the sweet Parliamentary pension.

You need to find your way back to Robinson’s Island !

This MAM LEC issue too complex for you .

  5. Hi David

A lovely designed and constructed house you have there!

The MOF Chris Sinckler would be extremely proud of you to see that his fiscal policies has allowed you to invest and live in Barbados 🇧🇧.

Kudos David , on your new home 🏡!

  6. Is this the house (2.5M) that the MOF is alleged to have purchased?

  7. David

Any ideas as to the bona fide owner of the house shown?

  8. Alleged!

  9. That house look like Grenville Phillips house

  10. Do we still have a functioning Financial Crimes Unit and if so, do they investigate nationals whose worldly goods appear to exceed by far their declared income? Do they follow the money trail when someone on a fixed income suddenly acquires a luxury sea craft, a Range Rover and a multi-million dollar property? Does the BRA do occasional audits on people who were hand-to-mouth in the recent past and suddenly seem to be rolling in dough and sporting very large bank accounts (on and off-shore) or does this not apply to the political class? Any leader who knowingly turns a blind eye to dishonesty within the ranks of his/her management team is either an idiot or is just as dishonest.

  11. Blp yardfowls and their associates. The narrative goes as follows Integrity! accountability! transparency!and character. All which in the final analysis goes to the heart of those involved with given Mia the accreditation necessary to become a lawyer.
The blp yardfowls would continue to cry foul. However their is a stench of foul air that fills the atmosphere associated to the LEC
And the question most asked. Who know and what do they know

BRA is a statutory board controlled by the Minister of Finance. Do you really think that BRA would investigate any ruling-party MPs? That is why politicians like to form statutory boards to get away from the scrutiny associated with Public Service employment.

Someone is complaining that it’s not the house people are looking for……so it’s best to wait until they find the right house, which should not be hard in such a small space.

    Not Grenville’s house either.

…..where are the investigative reporters in Barbados…..an alledged yacht, alledged million dollar house….and all types of allegations associated with millions of dollars on and offshore. ..on a 17,000 dollar a month minister’s salary is enough for an investigation….because there has to be crimes committed somewhere, none of that is doable on a minister’s salary.

Dont expect lazy Fruendel to do anything, he will tell you it’s not his name being called…to take ya proof to the DPP…

In other words. …do his job for him.

Ah fully expect Fruendel and Sinckler to tell IMF about Mia’s LEC….idiot yardfowls.

  14. When a country could sink to the level where it become OBVIOUS that corruption is endemic at the highest levels of government, and this situation is shrugged off as ‘normal’ by the collective society, …THEN we know that some kind of ‘end’ is near.

When even notorious murder accused are able to walk the streets while the so-called ‘justice system’ idles away the years’ – awaiting the death of witnesses, loss of evidence, and the destroying the CRITICAL aspect of SWIFT JUSTICE…… It it time for a CARING and CONCERNED GOD to put an end to the disgrace which we are calling a ‘society’.

If people always got exactly what they deserved, then those Cat 5 Hurricanes would have followed Janet’s path. BUT because BBE is long suffering, patient and have family interests on Island, we have been given another reprieve…

The level of BLATANT corruption now openly displayed throughout out society has become distasteful and disrespectful to everything that this country stood for on Independence Day 1966.
The RESULTS (downgrades, falling standards, loss of national pride, national subservience) that we have seen over the last two decades SHOULD be enough to bring us to our collective senses – but instead, we see more and more persons ASPIRING to get themselves into position to benefit from corruption.
What a land of brass bowls…..

Woe to us when BBE’s patience runs out….

The same person, ‘elevated’ from a ‘rank’ cow-herding pauper to the prince of political thieves, could not have climbed those corrupted stairs of new found wealth unless he won the Euro-millions Lotto on one of his frequent-flying ‘business’ jaunts.

In the absence of his morally ‘Stinking’ luck- and for him to accumulate his ‘alleged’ newly-flaunting opulence in such a short period time in control of the country’s fast depleting purse strings- he must have been well aided and abetted in the scams of defrauding poor taxpayers by those highly-placed public sector managers who, as chief accounting officers, would have sworn ‘Constitutionally’ to protect and promote the financial interests of the taxpaying public.

Let us be evenhanded in this obvious nouveau riche triangle caught between many a hard rock at Coverly and Valerie and a dried-up bag of cement found in the Dalkeith Woods no longer fit for purpose to raise any Hyatt erection on Bay Street.

  28. 29. Y’all gine down a dangerous road. It seems like many are trying to tarnish the then Chief Justice’s image. Like I have often said, we too RH bright–first it was LEC, followed by a “double major”, then it was Practice Certificate, now it’s hinting at collusion/corruption. Anyone see a trend? Fractured disappeared from BU after Monday’s Brasstacks, all of a sudden he’s back. Imagine a strong supporter of Solutions pontificating about honesty and integrity. I wonder who is the candidate that don’t even carry make-up for 95% of the Bajan population, or the one that don’t pay their employees’ NIS?

  30. Fractured,

Not at all. I see right through this ‘faux’ LEC …whatever (cannot call it an issue).

Things are falling apart and some folks would pull at ANYTHING to win an election. Stop at nothing.

Terrible how they can put themselves before country.

I will just say this once and not repeat it. Accept it and take it as a ‘word to the …. ‘ cannot call you wise, but, you get the idea.

There are many overseas watching. From investors (the legitimate ones I mean, not the fly by night ones that would come here anyway, as long as they get money), to lending agencies, to governments.

Those people actually can understand much more than you will ever know. They have known for a long time and I have heard a comment many years ago that I will not forget.

Trust me when I say this. Barbados cannot afford to continue on the current path.

You think people are stupid?? You all are pegged very properly.

    Lol.

The Paradise Papers will be searched for evidence. All of the data has not yet been released. Only that in respect of famous individuals.

When the rest of the data is available , it will be searched.

More, that there will be more Papers, like Panama and Paradise.

They can run, but cannot hide, these investigations will continue and gain momentum.

We shall soon know who and what has money in international jurisdictions.

It is only a matter of time. We shall know companies, funds transferred and more.

    What fun!

    Greetings!

You’ve probably become accustomed to finding rich people people, politicians, and luxury items such as jets and yachts in offshore tax havens. But how about your favorite music memories? Today we look at the music industry’s link to offshore finance through music rights held in tax havens.

There were also a number of celebrities found in the Paradise Papers. Take, for example, Justin Timberlake, who was linked to an offshore company that bought property in the Bahamas.

Some are saying that the house is owned by Sinckler. I do not know that to be true but let’s say that it is, do you see the BRA investigating its minister? You see why it is so insidious to have a law enforcement agency being a statutory board controlled by a minister.
