The spelling does not just depend on the country of original, according to the resident cut and paste artist. Scotch whisky is legally defined, and they are very active in enforcing it. The Japanese and Indians tried in the past making ‘whisky’ and they took them to court. Of course, they can make whiskey.
It is why I have said here on many occasions that we need to legally define Barbadian (Bajan) rum, if not there is nothing to prevent the Chinese, French and others from making Bajan rum. Once the term becomes generic, similarly to Demerara sugar, there is nothing we can do about it. -

So called Barbados rum is now totally ‘bastardized’.
We can understand the requirement to import the glass bottles and plastic containers for the retailing of the knock-down rum or even the oak barrels for aging the ‘imitation’ spirits.
But, hell No to the molasses!Barbados rum what.

You got it in one. The real problem is that in a country with a higher per capita number of lawyers, and a parliament dominated by lawyers, we still have not secured Barbadian rum in law. Blue Mountain coffee is owned by the Japanese, the same way that Mount Gay is owned by the French.
We cannot make Cornish pasties in Barbados, but in Cornwall they can make cou-cou. -

The challenge is how do you insulate the ‘competent’ management from the political interference; sometimes on a daily basis?
What does management do when the Board is beholden to some misfit potentially bribe-taking minister like the Lowedown?
Transportation might be seen as a public good but one that can be more efficiently and effectively performed by the private sector even within a regulatory framework. The generation and distribution of electricity is done within such a regulated private sector framework.
Why not public transportation and even water; just for the sake of the nation’s economic future?
Let the State continue to do what it is good at. That is, protecting its citizens and enforcing the laws of the land.
The question of ownership whether local, foreign or a combination thereof ought to the kernel of the discussion.

Former Peterborough Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro and his cousin David Del Mastro have announced plans to build a solar farm in Cuba – even though their earlier plan to build one in Barbados never got off the ground.
The Del Mastros are in business together: David is president and CEO of Deltro Group, and Dean is vice-president and chief financial officer.
In late 2015, they announced they would be building a $40-million solar panel manufacturing plant and solar farm in Barbados. It was expected open in the spring of 2016.
But Barbadian media reported on Wednesday that it was never built, though Del Mastro told reporters there this week that it’s still in the works – and that Deltro has plans for yet another solar farm in Cuba.
Dean Del Mastro couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.
He’s on bail these days, having applied to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada his conviction for overspending on his election campaign in 2008 and taking steps to cover it up.
In February, Del Mastro told Barbadian reporters that Deltro had received the municipal approvals needed to allow construction to begin construction on the solar farm in Barbados.
But he said the project was delayed because $4 million in tariffs had been placed on the manufacturing line that he’d had shipped to the island.
Meanwhile, a press release issued this week by Deltro Group states that the firm has been awarded a new contract to build, own and operate a similar solar farm in northwestern Cuba.
