Press Release submitted by The Leeward Island Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA)
Julia Reifer-Jones, CEO of LIAT(Ag)

The Leeward Island Airline Pilots Association would like to inform the General Public that its relationship with LIAT (1974) Ltd is currently strained and has deteriorated to an all time low. The Association since late 2012 has engaged LIAT in negotiations for a new salary structure for its ATR-72 aircraft (not covered under the current MOA) and general salary increases. After years of stalling and legal manoeuvring by LIAT, including the Company filing legal action in both the High Court and Industrial Court, the Association in the spirit of fostering and maintaining a good relationship with LIAT accepted the Company’s salary package offer in January 2017.

LIALPA accepted this deal on the premise that the pilots would make this a one off concession to ensure the survival of the Company.

  1. The LIAT problem is like a lie sore, it is not getting any better.

  2. DO I HEAR ANOTHER 142 0R 200 MIL FROM BARBADOS TO PUMP IN LIAT………REMINDS ME OF TRANSPORT BOARD ALWAYS CASH STRAP, DON’T CARE HOW MUCH MONIES YOU PUT IN HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  3. When will Maloney who sits on the Board establish his own airline? Logical says there must be a reason he was able to weasel his way onto the BOD?

  4. I have to visit St. Lucia within the next 2 weeks and was thinking about booking my flight with LIAT, until I saw Trans Island Air 2000 on a BU page.

After perusing their web-site I realized TIA is offering much cheaper fares than LIAT.

The Caribbean region needs more competition.

  5. Where is P.M. Keith Mitchell and some of the others who sponge off LIAT? He is quick to run his mouth on issues within the WICB, but never a word from him when issues like LIAT are being discussed.

Name one or two agreements that the DLP has kept in the last 9 years?

Crooks, Liars and Scumbags. Why do i get the feeling LIAT is behaving like a company who is laundering money?

  7. The GOB should get shot of LIAT.The GOA has always exercised full control of LIAT,therefore let them pay to fly the carrier. It is known that all these cash strapped islands use LIAT to collect heavily inflated departure taxes and terminal user fees.It is my understanding that the starved for cash governments are the first to be paid by LIAT therefore the pilots and others are peeved at management repeatedly seeking their ‘understanding’ to wait a few days more when pay date comes around.CAL is no better off with the GOTT down on its finances also. How far these island territories have come since the days of ‘oil don’t spoil’.

    @ Gabriel

I have often defended LIAT in this forum, however, I have to agree with your comments. Barbados should divest majority shareholder arrangements with LIAT and leave it for the Antiguan government to control, thereby fulfilling the wishes of Antigua’s present PM, Gaston Browne.

Browne has protested against every shareholder decision since he became PM of Antigua. His main interest is not the financial viability or efficiency of the airline, but for the status quo to remain in favour of Antigua.

Browne told Antiguans his government would resist any attempt to move LIAT’s base from Antigua to Barbados. He wrote a letter to the chairman of the shareholder governments of the regional airline, SVG PM Ralph Gonsalves, urging that no further action be taken until his administration discusses the matter.

The following excerpts were taken from the editorial of the March 31, 2015 edition of the “Antigua & Barbuda Caribbean Times.” Note the “strong language” used to describe Barbados.

“In recent days, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has every reason to become furious over the contents of a leaked document detailing plans that would see Barbados PURSUE an UNDERHANDED MOVE. It amounts to an alleged COVERT ATTEMPT for Barbados to SHAFT Antigua and Barbuda by divesting its majority share in regional-airline LIAT, and to take several aircraft from its fleet in order to form a new airline. The thought of it has come across as being HIGHLY OFFENSIVE to the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda.”

“Caribbean Times believes that several actions since the entry of some persons, are indicative of NARROW, NAIVE, and NAUSEOUS SCHEMES to belittle the people of Antigua and Barbuda. The pioneering work of several past Caribbean leaders in forging stronger regional ties, appears as if it is being abandoned by particular players of which the name Barbados keeps cropping up in recent memory. Who are the real shapers of the ill-advised plan to shaft both LIAT and Antigua and Barbuda, simply for the sake of advancing an insular nationalism, against the spirit of Caribbean regionalism?”

PM Browne is on record of sending correspondence to the shareholders demanding that heads should roll. Perhaps, the sooner, the better once culpability can be established. Many of those getting sight of the almost diabolical but shameful plan, are already suggesting that if Barbados was not one of the architects, it is very likely that its agents were aware of the details contained in the TREACHEROUS PLANS. PM Browne, as recent as this past weekend, was adamant that Barbados was “literally seeking to collapse LIAT,” and that any such moves would run “contrary to the spirit of Caribbean integration.” Barbados ought to act justly, and come clean. PM Browne in his wisdom, cannot and will not absolve Bridgetown without just cause given the dangerous posturing and diplomatic slip-ups already implicating Barbados’ walk away from tradition and upright reputation.

“Barbados co-owns LIAT with the minority shareholder governments of St. Vincent, Antigua and Barbuda, and Dominica. It is almost certain that the OECS Aviation Ministers – maybe, minus St. Vincent & the Grenadines, will show Barbados a thing or two about UNITY and the SPIRIT of REGIONALISM.”

Am I to understand that Baloney is carrying his big stick, undermining, devious, mind boggling,bypass-the-rule-book attitude in the LIAT boardroom?
