Will Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart intervene?

The video of a passenger being dragged from his seat by security forces on an United Airlines plane recently evoked  world wide public consternation AND condemnation. The revelation that United Airlines resurrected a fine print clause embedded in their terms and conditions of travel which supported they have the right to remove any passenger in the event of overbooking added another perspective to the incident.

Surely there is everything wrong with manhandling a paying passenger who should reasonably have expected after paying for a plane ticket to be extended all courtesy by the service provider. Some have asked why did the airline crew and passengers who witnessed the incident not feel compelled to intervene on humanitarian grounds? A sense of honouring the principles of social justice? What we witnessed on the video -was it not enough to have provoked outrage and disobedience by John Citizens who were in close proximity? Have human beings become so devoid of an inherent basic human quality of doing good that we are unable to act to ‘protect’ a fellow humanoid?

We know the answer why onlookers did nothing. It is because we live in a system that has brainwashed even the very educated- used loosely -that to conform is kosher. It has come as no surprise that United Airlines has settled with the abused passenger for an undisclosed settlement.

We are pleased the aggrieved passenger has probably received millions to salve his feelings. The question should linger with the public though  –why have we allowed ourselves to be brainwashed by the system? That we would sit in our seats and allow an innocent man to be dragged along the floor, cuffed, bloodied with a broken jaw the result.

This week a sitting member of parliament branded David Comissiong an enemy of the state, his only ‘crime’ that he retreated to the Barbados courts to seek a judicial review of the decision by the Prime Minister of Barbados as minister responsible for Town and Country Planning to approve the construction of the Hyatt hotel on Bay Street. One should reasonably have expected that such labelling by a representative of the people should have been roundly condemned by all Barbadians. After all, Comissiong’s ‘crime’ is opened to be committed by ALL citizens under the Constitution of Barbados.

The little we know of Comissiong is that he vacated the comfort of his middleclass nest to associate and fight for causes of the underclass. It seems distasteful that during the week we have been given a public holiday to celebrate our national heroes named and unnamed we are forced to defend a citizen advocate whose only crime is that he sought justice by pursuing a legal avenue available to ALL citizens.

Similar to the bigger issue the United Airlines incident raised so too the labelling of Comissiong as an enemy of the state. Why have we allowed the political class to disrespect the people they are elected to serve? Given the public outrage at the offensive labelling of David Comissiong by Minister of Housing Denis Kellman should he not have felt constrained by now to offer an unconditional apology? Further, should the Prime Minister even if he is gazing at the clouds from Mount Olympus demonstrate leadership by censoring Kellman?  What message is the political class sending by attacking citizens who have done no wrong from the floor of parliament? Yet the Prime Minister felt duty bound to defend Speaker Michael Carrington who withheld hundreds of thousands of dollars from a septuagenarian client.

Oh the irony and hypocrisy!

Why is it important for Minister Kellman and the government to apologize to Comissiong? All of us have to be guardians of our democracy. Our words and actions must support the ideal that every man and woman has the inalienable right under the system of democracy we practice to act within the boundary of the law.

Citizens of a democracy live with the conviction that through the open exchange of ideas and opinions, truth will eventually win out over falsehood, the values of others will be better understood, areas of compromise more clearly defined, and the path of progress opened. The greater the volume of such exchanges, the better. American essayist E.B. White put it this way: “The press in our free country is reliable and useful not because of its good character but because of its great diversity. As long as there are many owners, each pursuing his own brand of truth, we the people have the opportunity to arrive at the truth and dwell in the light….There is safety in numbers. – What is Democracy

Fruendel’s donkeys like Kellman should remember that Barbados is not a dictatorship, none of the ministers can dictate a citizen’s right to challenge an inept, incompetent, corrupt government…, with a history of bad, reckless decision making that harms the people and country.

    What about proportional representation??

Note how the seats are allocated based on the number of votes each party gets.

    PAR victorious in Curacao elections
Added by Barbados Today on April 29, 2017.

The Partido Alternativa Real (PAR) led by its new political leader Eugene Rhuggenaath was Saturday declared the biggest winner following the preliminary count of the general elections held here on Friday.

The PAR received 18,362 of a total of 78,815 votes cast in the election that was observed by a four-member team from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

It is the first time that Rhuggenaath participated in an election as leader of the party. The PAR was one of 11 parties that contested the poll, two less than the October 5, 2016 poll when three parties won four of the 21 seats in Parliament.

The PARTIDO (MAN) party of former prime minister Hensley Koeiman came in second with 16,071 votes. The party placing third, is the current coalition partner MFK of Gerrit Schotte with 15,710 votes.

Other parties that have received enough votes for a seat in Parliament are Korsou di Nos Tur (KdNT) of the businessman Amparo dos Santos with 7,438 votes, Pueblo Soberano with 4,029 votes, PIN of former Minister of Traffic, Transportation and Spatial Planning Suzanne Camelia-Römer with 4185 votes and Movementu Progresivo (MP) of Dr. Marilyn Moses with 3885 votes.

For the first time one of the country’s oldest party the Partido Nashonal di Pueblo ( PNP) led by Humphrey Davelaar did not receive enough votes for a seat in Parliament. This will be the first time the party is not represented in Parliament since it was established about 70 years ago.

The preliminary results indicate that PAR will have 6 seats in the Parliament, with MAN and MFK five seats each, KdNT two seats, and PIN, PS and MP one seat each.

Friday’s elections followed the collapse of the Koeiman government on October 5, 2016 after seven weeks. The cabinet fell on February 12, 2017.

  3. No-one in the DLP is hampering any citizens right to speak nor challenge. People just throwing things at a wall and hoping its sticks. Kellman expressed his private view. I didnt like what he said. However, how is he bringing democracy under threat. OSA use to insult and say derogatory thing about members of his own party, opposition, private citizens and those in the MEDIA. And he was well loved by most of you on here for 14 plus years, he could do no wrong. Was democracy under threat then? MAM spoke out against the blogs. Was democracy under threat then? All of a sudden now, Kellman expressed his opinion and its being linked to Frenduel, the DLP and democracy being under threat. Give me a break. To the author, you need to go and come again.

….same thing happened in the US, there is no middle ground.

  5. Uh uh!

Look at trouble brewing in the DLP!

I am now reading my Saturday Sun and cannot believe that there is not a peep coming from the same yardfowls who are always talking about disunity in the BLP. The bastards are planning to oust David Estwick and prevent him from running or if they win, deny him a ministerial pick. The gang leaders even talked about sending Freundel to run in St Philip West as they believe it is a safe seat like St John and whom ever the DLP send would win. Talk about arrogance!

These morons do not take advice from not even their own. Estwick told them the truth a few days ago and they ready to destroy the man who was always the drawing card for the DLP.

Just like what they did to Tannis who said he gave them good advice and thry dumped him.

And are we surprised that this country is in the mess it is in? I wonder why the private sector guys even bothered to waste their time sitting on some committee. …….

The PM was on TV tonite explaining what a downgrade means. He was apparently pleased to say that Trinidad has been downgraded by S&P and it was nothing to be ashamed of.He obviously think he can fool people with that crappy attempt at explaining Barbados’s 16 and counting downgrades and he omitted to mention that Trinidad’s problem is nothing like Barbados which is borrowing $50 million a month from NIS and Central Bank since 2009 to pay public servants salaries and wages.Trinidad’s problem is its dependence on oil and the current prices are not what they budgeted for.We remember the Indian lady and her ATM talk and we remember Eric’s ‘Oil don’t spoil’ and his ‘3 blind mice’.Its all to do with an ability to manage your resources and a fallback plan when dealing with a fluid product like oil.Part of Trinidad’s problem is its crime situation and the uncertainty and fear of citizens and investors in that fun loving country.
Staurt seem to think that he is in good company and now found his tongue. The ungodly hombre….

  11. ALIBABA…SHOULDN’T THE NAME BE G.P?
Didn’t OSA get up in the House and refer to a distinguished journalist as: an Indentured Servant? Talk about hypocrisy on BU.
Miller, still talking up devaluation? Are you never going to stop?. By the way there are only two things you can do with money save it or spend it. And if you spend it on your people, in whatever form, it is the same; whether you pay it as wages, for services, or for goods, it is being spent on your people for the good of the country, the same people who make up the country.

  12. Gabriel

I was out and did not see the fake news……..was surprised that they actually brought any footage from the BLP picnic last night…….and were I at home …….as soon as Fumble’s face was shown, the channel would have been changed.

All I want to hear from him is to give the date for a general election and stop holding the rest of Barbados hostage to their incompetence.

They have been failing for 9 years, nothing they have tried has worked. Does anyone remember the Medium Term Fiscal Strategy and a second one and then some other thing that I cant remember…….yet they would not be truthful and say….hell no….enough of this torture………let us get out of this. They are all about party not country.

But they still think that they need to feast on the “fatted calf”……..Lord help us!

  13. How will the DLP with a general election on the horizon spend money to lure votes? It is what the two political parties do right?

The DLP has already started spending money. A few illiterate backward bajans already affirming that as long as they get their vote hampers, vote bills, and vote money to repair them houses, that people like Jones will get they vote. Money is going to fly left, right, and centre coming from these two political parties and all the talk several years ago about seeing vote buying will not mean squat. Votes already up for sale and the money hampers flying.

“Miller, still talking up devaluation? Are you never going to stop?. By the way there are only two things you can do with money save it or spend it..”

Hi Alvin, you are rather low profile these days.
Cat got your tongue or are you hiding inside the Hyatt tower awaiting the boarding of the DLP Titanic berthing at the Cruise Ship Terminal down Trevor’s way?

There is a third option to make profitable use of money, you know.
What about investing it in income and employment generation projects? The thing is that your current DLP administration can’t even build a pigpen without the baloney fella involved and the begging DLP yard boys with hands outstretched looking for their cut.

But Alvin don’t you have any shame as to accuse others of “hypocrisy on BU”?
Aren’t most financially-minded boffins warning your administration about the inevitable outcome of its profligate monetary habits and managerial incompetence?

Is the recently fired Guv of the Central Bank a turncoat hypocrite too?

You used to accuse the miller of peddling privatization to its fruitless maximum.
Now who are the biggest promoters and compulsive proponents of the same privatization if not the beleaguered DLP and its hypocritical goons like you?

Just remember the ship carrying those ‘foreign investment projects and proceeds from the sale of your family silver (BNTCL) ‘budgeted’ to save your sorry foreign reserves soul has been caught up in a legal storm of long delay thereby creating the perfect conditions for justification to forcibly adjust the currency peg downwards and placing it in its rightful financial position and economic pay-grade.

One day coming very soon your devaluation bogeyman called Stinkliar will arrive at your doorstep and like Dracula at midnight will bite you in your sorry arse and both your DLP and you will be transmogrified into devaluation zombies.

Education has done nothing for the older generation whose only ambition in life is to await a once yearly christmas hamper, in exchange for voting a political party of misfits into office to sell out the population to a minority of crooks….

…..the level of ignorance and backwardness in the majority population obviously surpasses the levels and standards of a good quality education….no educated or highly enlightened population would sink to or have such low expectations of and for themselves, their children and grandchildren..

Minister Kellman has nothing to apologise for.

David Comissiong is a nuisance. Plain and simple.

I hope that the crooked Barbados Labour Party is preparing themselves for a third term on the opposition benches. I know for sure that Bostic is a goner. The people in the city don’t like him.

What you have said @7.04am is a fact.We recognize there are a number of folk who are still willing to give the benefit of the doubt to authority figures.I think with the passage of those born in the late 20’s,and the 30’s generations a different outlook should come to the fore, there should be those who benefitted from a spread of the secondary education matrix and hence should be possessed of a more enquiring mind to distill fact from fiction, the eat-you-out-drink-you-out-vote-you-out-brigades.
To think we have laws against vote buying in all its forms is eveidence that passing a law requires an enforcement of that law.You couldn’t want worse than that both the Prime Minister and the Attorney General are quoted as saying they witnessed that spectacle but since they appeared romhave benefitted,it went no further than observation.Dont expect either group of lawyers to enable a special electoral prosecutor to resolve these agenda.

Gabriel….they are all waiting on the very next opportunity to buy votes, both politicians and government ministers….that is why there is a deafening silence on vite buying from both political parties.

The majority population lack self esteem and sekf confidence, both governments have spent 50 years destroying the self esteem and self confidence of the electorate, reducing, degrading and demeaning them to the status of mere yardfowls for the minister’s own greedy, self-serving 5 year rotating election purposes, it’s about time it backfires.

My personal view is that I will not be supporting any of Mr. Kellman’s establishments until he apologizes to Mr Commissiong, nor will I be supporting any person/party in the next elections until they present to me/John Public a draft bill that they will investigate and lock up any senior Public Officer (including politicians) who have been found to be acting outside the best financial and other interests of the state over the period of the last administration … thirdly, if a politician offers me money to vote I will take it and hand it over to Mr Saffrey without voting … Let that politician/agent “get a lawyer” and come after me…
