“The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity…” –The Second Coming –William Butler Yeats

Frequently, on the Facebook social medium, one will come across an invitation to title a random situation with the name of some film, song or other creative work. Were I invited to do the same with a book title for a global assessment of the year 2016, I would submit that of “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe. This work was part of my exposure to English Literature at secondary school, although I do not now recall the year. I choose this not because of the motif of the plot, although this itself (the conflict between tradition and a new culture) is not inapposite; but because of the seeming correlation and the direction in which the world seemed to be heading for the past twelve months.

More over, the title is likely, given its source, to find favour with those who believe that we are rapidly approaching the end time. The phrase comes from the poem by Yeats, “The Second Coming”, itself an event that has been prophesied to mark that occasion. According to Yeats,

“…Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming!”

Mankind is, however, if nothing else, an animal of hope. And no matter how inauspicious things may seem, we have managed to transpose the hope wrought by the traditional story of Christmas into an integral aspect of the change of the Gregorian calendar from December 31 of one year into January 1 of the one following.

Hence, despite our apparently intractable adverse economic circumstances, the deplorable state of the roads; our significant loss of standing as state debtors; the damaging and unfortunate categorization of our nation as a tax haven; the uncertain outcomes of Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as President of the US and its implications for a settled world in future, we somehow expect, albeit illegitimately, since we have no reasonable basis for doing so, that 2017 will give rise to a brave new world of peace and prosperity.

…Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned…

Today, as we greet the first few hours of the week, month and year, it is worthwhile to contemplate what the months ahead portend for us personally, nationally and globally.

I had stated earlier that the human being is an animal of hope. He or she is, arguably no less, a political animal, and I use that epithet in its populist sense. For Barbadians, 2017 marks the final full year, constitutionally, of the current governing administration since next year, 2018, will be the fifth anniversary of the last general election in 2013.

And as is constitutionally provided by section 61(3) -“Parliament, unless sooner dissolved, shall continue for five years from the date of its first sitting after any dissolution and shall then stand dissolved”. Of course, under our system of governance, these considerations, as stated, do not preclude the Prime Minister from exercising his awesome power to advise the Governor General to dissolve Parliament at any time prior, thus clearing the way for a general election.

This colloquial “ringing of the bell”, whenever it occurs, is likely to result in a cavalcade of partisan campaigning inclusive of the usual promises and representations by all concerned to ensure electoral triumph. Much as it was in the US in the months leading up to October where, in spite of his alarming manifesto of xenophobia, intolerance and vain boasts of imprisoning his Democrat opponent that resonated with a plurality of states, Mr. Trump now finds it appropriate, thankfully, to recant from those very stances that served so significantly to ensure his success. We should hope for a more sincere electoral courtship in our circumstance whenever that fateful day arrives.

At the global level, we would wish too for a more equitable treatment of those nations with less geopolitical clout by those that are more substantially resourced in that area. The frequent changing of the goalposts as to the definition of a tax haven and a crude reluctance by some to recognize that one salient characteristic of these entities is their affinity for secrecy; a factor far more evident in and synonymous with well known larger jurisdictions- have led to an unwarranted labeling of Barbados as a tax haven with all of the disreputable connotations attached thereto. The struggle to correct this error that might only do further damage to our fragile economy should be national and not merely partisan.

The personal aspect should be particular to each of my readers and I should not be so presumptuous as to suggest how you should lead your lives during the coming year. Nevertheless, as we begin 2017, permit me to wish you good health , prosperity and freedom from distress during the months ahead. In any case or those of us of a certain age, the phenomenon of the apparent shortening of periods of time, whether owed to our slowing metabolisms, heartbeats and breathing rates or to the logarithmic scaling of time -that we perceive a period of time as the proportion of time we have already lived through, it should, hopefully, soon be time to wish you a blessed New Year again!

  1. Jeff, and the BU family,
May health, comfort, and happiness engulf you this coming (actually it has already arrived) year. I look forward to vigorous debate on things National over the coming months, in which I shall certainly add my “idiocy”, and having put on the “whole armour of the Force” will seek to engage one and all.
I would like all BU contributors, especially people like Pacha and Chad, Well Well, and Gabriel, to visit a cinema nearby and view a film called “Hidden Figures”; -it hAS BEGUN AT some CINEMAS IN NORTH AMERICA, or will begin shortly. I read the book and am anxiously waiting to see when it will begin in Barbados. It is based on a true story and should be seen by every BLACK person; every school child-especially those who hate maths, and those with scientific aspirations, but more especially because it show the depths of discrimination in the U.S., but more so because it shows the resilience of black women, and the triumph of the human spirit. If the movie does justice to the book it should be moving and inspiring. Have any of you wondered if Blacks played any part in the Space race? This film show that some BLACk women; known as “human computers” played an integral part in the feat of landing a man on the moon. But their story has never been told before, and it will be a revelation, and an inspiration, to all who are not familiar with this story. It is a triumph of the human spirit.
    Happy New Year.

  2. That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

This poem has a meaning for 2017 as well in those last 4 lines,as we wait with interest to see what unfolds as the legacy of 2016.

  3. Yes we have begin 2017 and the future of oil looks promising for the bulls and the bears but for countries highly dependable on oil especially small developing countries who have refused or shy away from developing /producing sustainable alternative strategies from their high dependency on oil the Future looks dim for their economies as oil continues to sky rocket from very lows levels to marginal highs daily

Interesting line to start the new year…

Good that you have noted the uncanny collapse of our global society that defies all the corresponding increases in knowledge, technology and communications.

LOL …. just like getting old, …where we know more than ever; have more resources than ever; have more freedom than ever; …. but where our LIFE systems are on an unavoidable, often painful, downward slide to death.

Same thing with mother Earth…. We just happen to be the ones who are here in her old age….
You can be as optimistic and hopeful as your nostalgic senses warrants, …but in your inner intellect, you KNOW how this always ends….

  6. How can the price of oil look promising for the ‘bulls and the bears’?

  7. oops my bad correction noted x out the bears, however relevancy and importance of the story should not be flushed as oil is making a strong leap forward in the 2017 economy and its impact on small developing nations would not be good as all products having full dependency would fuel high prices and not going to get better with a trade war which should soon start between USa and china

Somehow, I think you got it wrong this time. I think the uncanny collapse is more a resultant of increases in knowledge, etc., rather than a situation that defies those factors. Cybertechnology which has so many good aspects might well be the primary agent of the apocalyse this time around instead of the fuel for a brave new world. Trump and the Republican leadership along with Putin and Netanyahu and a few other world leaders, who can’t appreciate what is happening under their noses, might well ensure that denouement.

With just 19 days to go before Trump takes over the mantle of leadership of the USA, the portents are all bad for that country as well as much of the rest of the world. Obama is almost surely fighting a losing battle in the late use of his powers of POTUS to try to turn back the clock which fingers are pointing inexorably to chaos and possibly cataclysm.

The news of the last week or so have been almost singularly bad for the US and the world; Putin overriding his foreign affairs advisors to put Trump into an impossible situation with his country, given that Trump is almost certainly a bought pawn of Putin with a temperament that can do or admit no wrong and a finger on the Nuclear football; The British prime minister essentially siding with Netanyahu in the spat over the Israeli settlements vote at the UN; The disclosure that the Russians have hacked A Vermont power plant and the likelihood that it might have the capability to disable such power plants at will; The Republican hierachy, with surprisingly few abstentions, signalling to Trump that they will stand with him on all his likely quixotic decisions; Some Democrats going against Obama’s efforts to delay Trump’s excesses.

    The portents are not good.

  12. Another chance to read Stephen Hawking on political events in 2016: “What matters now, far more than the choices made by these two electorates, is how the elites react. Should we, in turn, reject these votes as outpourings of crude populism that fail to take account of the facts, and attempt to circumvent or circumscribe the choices that they represent? I would argue that this would be a terrible mistake.”

    Vincent Haynes, re. your 8:22 am post;

Apocalyptic predictions almost never come true in our Christian age but somehow I have the feeling that there might be something in the one suggested in your poem. It seems that this year is special and that developments in many areas are converging towards something big.

The Trump win against all odds leads the pack of odd, but very important, occurrences. Similarly, the seemingly unexpected stance by Putin to the sanctions placed on Russia for the proven hacking of the US elections, puts Trump squarely in the cross hairs to make a decision that will stamp him as the most Unpatriotic American ever. I suspect Putin knows that Trump cannot make a decision that will result in greater sanctions or other actions against Russia.

What Trump does in this matter will be pivotal in determining the future decline or otherwise of the Great USA.

But Obama is not out of the game yet. He promised other actions against Russia and Putin. If you watched Rachel Maddow about 2 weeks ago you might guess what might be one of the things he might be gearing up to do that might adversely affect Putin’s personal life. In addition there appears to be another Executive Action Obama might take that could tie Trump’s hands in a most important area that correlates closely with the implied sentiments of your poem.

We are perhaps in the most interesting time for mankind on Earth, since the last big meteorite fell on Earth at the end of the last Ice age.

  14. In his customary verbose and repetitive style, Jeff begins the New Year with a familiar rant bemoaning the “xenophobia” of Trumpism, and the “unwarranted” characterization of Barbados as a “tax haven”.

Mr Jeff, there are perhaps 20 million Mexicans illegally living in the United States, sucking the lifeblood out of the country by using its schools, hospitals and roads, by taking jobs and income from American citizens, and by remitting billions of US dollars to Mexico, thereby increasing the monumental trade deficit America incurs with that country each year.

As America sinks deeper into debt, no responsible US politician can allow that situation to continue. Ditto the situation with another bloodsucker, the People’s Republic of China. Trump is being prudent, not xenophobic. If America were not in debt, he would hardly worry about its trade relations with other countries.

As for Barbados, there is nothing unwarranted about describing it as a tax haven. In the financial literature, a tax haven is any jurisdiction with tax laws that can be used by individuals or businesses to avoid the tax claims of another jurisdiction.

That fits Barbados to a T. Every year, vast money flows are recorded as Canadian “investment” in Barbados, even though few Canadian firms carry out their principal revenue-earning operations on this island. For example, Statistics Canada says that in the first decade of this century $390 BILLION of Canadian funds were moved to Barbados, attracted in part by artificially low tax rates.

That makes Barbados a classic tax haven. Government accountants in Canada have also shown that Barbados is the principal off-shore destination for fugitive capital sourced in Canada and have named prominent Canadian lawyers and doctors who are being investigated for their secret bank accounts in Barbados.

So Jeff, cut out the tax haven denialism. Face the facts like an honest man.

  15. Let’s hope 2017 puts and end to the credibility of the real “fake news” purveyors:

Majority Are Still Falling for Fake News

A new poll from YouGov shows that most Americans still believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction at the start of the Iraq war: (bar graph in original shows 53% of Amricans still believe Saddam had WMDs vs 47% who do not).

That’s stunning, given that President Bush, Prime Minister Blair, the CIA, SecDef Rumsfeld, SecState Powell, National Security Advisor Rice, Bush’s chief strategist Rove, “Curveball” (the alias of the name of the unreliable WMD information) and other top officials have all publicly admitted that Iraq had no WMDs.

    Corporate Media Pushed Fake News

The mainstream media has confessed that they pushed the fake WMD claims.

For example, the New York Times pushed fabricated evidence in the run up to the Iraq war. A year later, the newspaper apologized for its inaccurate, one-sided coverage.

The Washington Post also apologized for hyping the non-existent WMD threat.

    CNN’s Howard Kurtz wrote:

Major news organizations aided and abetted the Bush administration’s march to war on what turned out to be faulty premises. All too often, skepticism was checked at the door, and the shaky claims of top officials and unnamed sources were trumpeted as fact.

GreenMonkey, re. your 11:09 am post

Of course you are correct that the “WMD in Iraq claim” was fake news. But I think you are comparing apples to oranges in attempting to equate the Bush WMD fake news with the Obama administration late taking of action on the interference of the Russian Cybernauts with the 2016 USA presidential election.

All of the US intelligence agencies collaborated in determining that the Russians hacked the US elections. Vice President,Cheyney, cherry picked information to suggest the presence of WMD’s in Iraq and got Colin Powell to go along with him in that false claim and use that information to invade Iraq.

The Bush intelligence agencies did not categorically agree with the false premise that Iraq had WMD’s but the Obama Intelligence agencies all support the proven claim of Russian hacking of the 2016 US presidential elections.

    There is a difference.

  19. @ Jeff Cumberbatch

Seems to us that you have, this time, tried to imbue a certain local political ‘landmark’, of sorts, within a literary tradition/s, as if to hide something.

The last time we saw an attempt to do such was at the DLP Headquarters in George Street.

Then it was Don Blackman trying to justify an argument of support for Erskine Sandiford by engaging the works of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, etc.

It did not bother him that there was philosophical incongruence at work. His listeners were not to know that. Poor yardies!

Is yours an attempt to give a rest bite to this regime?

As to The Home Coming, we have found its treatment by Harold Pinter, another one of your Englishmen, more enlightening.

Just as 60+ million people voted for an against Clinton (and Trump) I offer a different perspective to your critique above.

I read GreenMonkey and shook my head…we need to get a handle on what is ‘Fake News’ in the context of the recent elections and that WMD debacle: they are not the same!

To equate the two we need to believe that all the intelligence services around the world were feeding us blatant and deliberate lies about possible Iraq WMD. I do not believe it is that simple. And of course one can also say bad reporting and lack of a more cynical eye.

But these ‘fake news’ are truly that. Abject falsehoods with not even the barest semblance of validity concocted from actual ‘small instances of WMD’ as the Iraq story developed but data created strictly from the imagination of a blogger or even a Presidential candidate with not a scintilla of truth.

So to attempt to match the two is to perpetuate a truly erroneous narrative.

The comparison with WMD and the Russian hacking is simply Trumpian PR which is defined as: blustery made often and loudly which becomes ‘true fake news”.

  22. A healthy and happy New Year to Jeff, “David” and all who come here for the sake of argument, to gain knowledge or engage in some frivolity.

At the start of each year we hope for better and brighter things than the one preceding, we should take a look back at previous Jan.1st, to see what we were hoping for and see how it turned out. Yeats poem came in the wake of WW1 and things were bleak in Europe. It foretold of the end times that is so frequently mentioned by those quoting or interpreting biblical texts, at one time Obama was seen as the “Anti- Christ” who would make his appearance before Christ made his “Second Coming”.

At the time the poem was penned the horrors of the Great War was still evident, the Armenian genocide had not run its course and WW11 was just a generation away. We have survived the Bolshevik Revolution; Chinese Revolution; Indian Partition; conflicts in Indo China- Korea and Vietnam; wars in the Middle East; famine, Genocide and Apartheid in Africa; Terrorism and other conflicts in other outposts in the world too numerous to mention. Surviving the “H’ Bomb demands its own sentence.

2017 will be no different, there will be other occasions that will cause us pain, other events that will cause us to reflect on man’s inhumanity to man but we will persevere and grow from the experiences.

This month will mark the inauguration of a new President of a country that is considered the ne plus ultra in our region (and perhaps the world), word on the street is that he will try to echo JFK in his inaugural speech, he should try to repeat Lincoln’s where he spoke of the “better angels of our nature”

Having aggressively prosecuted another blog here with similar title Things Fall Apart de ole man will speak briefly to a small part of this 2017 denouement.

And i will introduce it thusly

Have you ever thought of the connection between “squeezing the balls of a mosquito” and “squeezing the balls of a Lion?” Certainly not!

I shall try to put this statement in context of the seeming impossibility of one with the plain stupidity of the other and de ole man will speak of (i) Donald Trunk sorry Trump and (ii) the New World that he is promoting with his platitudes and constant sucking up to Putin the man who said recently that “russia has no borders”.

Each key stroke, each transaction on this here computer, and subsequent submission to the secure Barbadosunderground.wordpress.com is crafted in these “numbers” that John saw as this world moves towards the total removal of paper cash to bitcoins and numbers and the mark of this “beast”

But doan leh me stray too far from north.

One or two of you my fellow BU-ians have both noticed, AND COMMENTED ON, the article “Burlington Electric discovered that the laptop had been infected after the FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a joint report Thursday that included code believed to have been used by Russian hackers to penetrate the Democratic National Committee…”

So what does (i) the appointment of a man (Trump) with “balls the size of a mosquito” and concomitant brains, 1/10th of the size of the aforestated balls” playing with “the balls of a lion (Putin)”?

It spells even more anii horibilii? yet we are “happy campers” here in BIM, content that Billy Griffith (and part of the AC consortium) are reporting bumper numbers to our tourism arrivals, uncaring that “Things around us Are Falling Apart”

    @ The Honourable Blogmaster

Any man/government that accepts computers from the Chinese Government AND THEN USES THEM IS A FOOL!

And the fact that the Government of Barbados IS USING THEM confirms my point

SIGINT is a lil pass-time uh de ole man so I got a fairly good unnerstanding of (illegal) signal acquisition.

I give the Pedantic One this article that speaks to trojan horses and that, even in the mighty united states of america this practice IS EN VOGUE!!

“…the existence of a series of “Interceptor” cell towers across the US, there’s been a scramble for information on exactly what these mysterious towers actually are. There are suggestions that the cell towers are the work of criminal gangs, a surveillance tool by the FBI, or even that they belong to foreign spies….”

The Business News article continues “…The first news of the mysterious (interceptor cell) towers came from a press release for a high-end smartphone — they were not uncovered through a research paper or security researcher’s blog as one would normally expect…”

“…If your phone connects to a fake cell tower, whoever operates the device can listen to your calls, intercept your text messages, and send fake text messages to your phone. It’s also possible to monitor and track the physical location of a mobile phone using a hacked cell tower, meaning that so-called “Interceptor” towers can be used to follow people as they travel in the area of the cell tower…”

“…Fake cell phone towers are a big problem in China, where it’s common for scammers to use these devices to trick people into handing over their credit card details…”

The ones i was talking about are in the United States though.

I understand the way that De Pedantic one thinks, whu after all I know he fuh long enough.

    He reasons thusly

1.You have stated “a” (with conviction) but so do most men
2.While “a” might be true, and I KNOW “a” to be true, “is it your truth?”
3.Prove to me that it is your truth

And then, there will be a number of iterative queries put to you for you to confirm if, what he already knows to be a truth, is your truth.

It is no different really to how when some of the BU Order of Testers (I know not who they are) do dat “tag team” pun (i) Danny Gill and den pun (ii) Walter Blackman.

Danny get vex and lef de studio and ent come back

But “the PPK”, well he decide dat he going sit back and watch tings, surface here and there, heheheheheheheh, strategically, like a Taliban insurgent, leh go a few shots, in de air, to say “I Walter still heah” and disappear again.

Dem fellers is get tied up and dem, “dictatorial genes” does show dem up not to like any contrary opinion like, Lil Caesar and Fumbles and Donville

De Word jes is a lil bid more ammmmm sophisticated wid he style uh engagement and ting but I ent got no ego to satisfy or appease. I does state facts and when he come with that psychobabble (heheheheheheheh) I doe jes gi’ he de facts and dem does be sufficient, most uh de time.

Our world is at War no matter how we want to look at it.

Trump is soon to be the Commander in Chief and ammmmmm doan mind whu dPd say dat office got inherent power and to disobey it means dat you either going do a JFK pun Trunk donkey or treason or disobey a direct order or quit like the Mormon singer did

You are merely trying to inoculate the regime in Bridgetown for blame.

On balance, the indicators though mixed, are not generally pointed in that direction.

Indeed, over supply, with the USA seeking to be net exporter, it is already self-sufficient, will cause tensions between major producers thereby further driving down prices.

But even if oil were free the FJS administration would be no less feckless. LOL

@Pieces, re the comment to “kill time”, yes that’s true. But re “tying up people in the process” , no sir, I engage to learn something or share an opinion, never to waste time just to abuse people’s time.

But when it comes to tech I ain’t so foolish as to tussle with your knowledge and that of your grand-son. The question was rhetorical mainly but yet also pertinent to real issues.

I appreciate and understand your remarks “I can sell you a computer which IS NOT ON THE COMPUTER BACKBONE OF THE WWW. but which, based on (i) hardcoded information and ii) alternative transmission mechanisms can export your supposedly secret keystrokes to my low orbit satellite constellation and relay that information to me 5,000 miles away” ….

… But the US is not Bdos and getting PCs from China. Anything in their secure areas cannot and should never be made by a foreign power.

You know as well as I do that when IBM became Lenova that certain avenues were closed for sales even as eyes were opened. I foolish but not totally foolish.

Take also the example the Chinese buying the Waldorf Astoria. Do you think any US President should ever stay there again in the Presidential suite – regardless of using serious counter intelligence measures???? Well I don’t.

Anyhow you also know that what you are suggesting above re hard-coded snooping is also an act of war in some cases. Are you suggesting that for years the US was doing that type of subterfuge!!!

That Hillary email and server brouhaha really kerfuffled me…I expected that she opted to go private for two reasons. To hide her data but more importantly to ensure the highest level security. The fact that it became such an albatross was kerfuffling.

It says something that she was NOT hacked by the Russians (as far as we know). Yet she was vilified as a security risk

Anyhow I would not challenge you on the rudiments and intricacies of tech…things you forget, I still don’t know. But I will certainly disagree on social and general issues surrounding a case related to that tech…like these cyber-attacks.

Anyhow we basically on same page here. I merely pointing out that some important things should be ‘impenetrable’ via www access and if it isn’t then the operational security systems/people are the ones at fault; the hackers are just trying a ting!

Matt 24 watch, 300: Putin of Russia — yes, the former KGB Colonel and now Orthodox President of Russia! — warns his nation and our civilisation about the ongoing collapse of Christendom . . .

    Food for thought.

Video (in Russian, with English sub-titles):

Vox Day (and I most definitely do not approve of him in general — hence no link . . . ) has a transcript:

A further challenge for the national Russian identity is connected to the processes we observe outside of Russia. They include foreign policy, moral, and other aspects. We see that many Euro-Atlantic states have taken the way where they deny or reject their own roots, including their Christian roots which form the basis of Western civilization.

In these countries, the moral basis and any traditional identity are being denied – national, religious, cultural, and even gender identities are being denied or relativised. There, politics treats a family with many children as juridically equal to a homosexual partnership; faith in God is equal to faith in Satan.

The excesses and exaggerations of political correctness in these countries indeed leads to serious consideration for the legitimization of parties that promote the propaganda of paedophilia.

The people in many European states are actually ashamed of their religious affiliations and are indeed frightened to speak about them. Christian holidays and celebrations are abolished or “neutrally” renamed, as if one were ashamed of those Christian holidays. With this method one hides away the deeper moral value of those celebrations.

And these countries try to force this model onto other nations, globally. I am deeply convinced that this is a direct way to the degradation and primitivization of culture. This leads to deeper demographic and moral crisis in the West.

What can be better evidence for the moral crisis of human society in the West than the loss of its reproductive function? And today nearly all “developed” Western countries cannot survive reproductively, not even with the help of migrants.

Without the moral values that are rooted in Christianity and other world religions, without rules and moral values which have formed, and been developed, over millennia, people will inevitably lose their human dignity and become brutes. And we think it is right and natural to defend and preserve these Christian moral values.

One has to respect the right of every minority to self-determination, but at the same time there cannot and must not be any doubt about the rights of the majority.

At the same time as this process plays out at a national level in the West, we observe on an international level the attempts to create a unipolar, unified model of the world, to relativise and remove institutions of international rights and national sovereignty. In such a unipolar, unified world there is no place for sovereign states. Such a world needs merely vassals.

From a historical perspective, such a unipolar world would mean the surrender of one’s own identity and of God-created diversity.

Putin here alludes to Acts 17: ” 26 And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands and territories. 27 This was so that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grasp for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. 28 For in Him we live and move and exist [that is, in Him we actually have our being], as even some of [f]your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’ . . . ” [AMP]

Food for sobering thought as we approach the threshold of another new year, one that portends to be tumultuous, given Brexit, Trump and Syria, not to mention the recent UN Security Council resolution targetting Israel.

Brethren, let us pray, for kings and all in authority, that there may be stabilisation enough that we may live a reasonable life and have a climate in which the good news of the Prince of Peace can be shared without let or hindrance. END

dPd; You asked some very important and insightful questions in your 2:15 pm post.

Here are a few tentative cursory answers from someone who is less knowledgeable than PUDRYR but nevertheless has had some exposure to Computers and Systems analysis since the 1970’s.

re your question Why does an electrical grid system NEED to be on a www node?

I think it is primarily an in-thing and sign of modernity, in essenc,e because it CAN be placed on the www and no utility worth its salt wants to be left out of the loop and every utility is doing it; AND it seems to make life easier and it definitely makes communications easier. etc. etc. But you answered your own question by citing one remedy for obviating the dangers of hacking, Go back to the days of courier runs with key data: everything isolated (important things anyhow) and sent to HQ by thumb drive (or encrypted secure link) Now what happens in transmission or after it gets there is another issue .

You also asked; Was the grid really in danger?

It seems the quoted example of Russian hacking of the Grid in (was it the Crimea?) resulted in serious damage to that grid so there seems to be some likelihood that the Vermont Grid might have been in some danger if one can divorce the fact that such an attack would have been an act of war against the mighty US and the Russians might not have been minded to take such a chance at this time. Seems they were just doing some preliminary research to establish capabilities and methodologies for the real thing if it ever came to that.

You also asked: Can we perceive that any of those nuclear or other energy sites are so ridiculously vulnerable? I agree with your answer Nonsense..

But wait, most of those Nuclear power plants were designed and set up decades ago when there was no such word in anyone’s lexicon as cybersecurity. Perhaps the communication modules and triggers have all been reengineered to today’s standards. But I wouldn’t bet my two mites on it.

You also, I think presciently, stated; And do we perceive that the US intelligence and military establishment will allow any President to come in and fall into bed with an enemy that would so completely upend their entire purpose of life! . You answered yourself Never..

I myself am also sure that US intelligence and the Military would not allow such a thing to happen. That is why I think that Trump might not indeed become the next President even at this late stage, especially since he continues to disparage the work of those agencies, continues to praise Putin and seems set to go even more boldly in that direction by wednesday this week. He looks as if he is going deeper and deeper into a morass of his own making. But then I am likely to have totally misread this situation.

Trump is not acting rationally in this matter and even if he changes his direction re. Putin. His apparent lack of good judgement would already have triggered warning bells. I think we will all have to stay glued to the TVs and Internet for at least the next month or so as this thing is really big.

So dPd I agree with you that; I don’t know yet what all the Trump BS is about, other than growing his business empire (and that will backfire on him badly). But I think that it certainly has a number of elements that have the potential to create mayhem in the world. But then, I’m just an armchair amateur prognosticator who might have lost touch with the real world out there.

I hope I’m wrong in this one.

  44. @ Dribbler & AWTY
It is no coincidence that modern technologies are vulnerable to cyber warfare. Everything nowadays tend to be engineered via software rather than being hardwired. This facilitates extremely improved performance. Think of modern vehicles – which are basically complex software systems controlling basic mechanical systems.
Such advanced systems are updated almost continuously, like how your computer, tablet, phone and even watch are routinely updated with new operating systems and communicate continuously with their home base.

It is the same with power systems, aircraft, ships, hospitals, train and bus systems, even home security systems. While we relish the high performance and utility of such systems, they expose our world in ways that we have never seen in the past.

The world wide web has accomplished in technology, what globalisation failed to do in economics, and the next global conflict will feature this battleground in ways that will amaze us all…

Just consider what could result from a virus inserted in various operating systems such as windows, apple, or other major computer systems that are shared across the world….. In a word, CHAOS.

To answer Dribbler’s question, ….who would pass up on having a modern, sophisticated, super-efficient power station that could almost ‘think’ for itself and respond instantly to system conditions…?
…Barbados of course, … we still have an old inefficient station some 40 years old, thanks to the forward thinking of that company, who wanted to protect us from such cyber threats… 🙂

  45. Enjoyed reading your scholarly presentation –

“Mr. Trump now finds it appropriate, thankfully, to recant from those very stances that served so significantly to ensure his success.”

but weren’t the stances taken by Mr Trump the usual par for the course by electoral candidates

and isn’t there direct evidence from our own last general elections re- re stances about university tuition, privatisation, retrenchment etc to debunk ‘

the hope for a more sincere electoral courtship in our circumstance whenever that fateful day arrives.”

and I can assume then that you would not therefore be casting your x on that day for a fateful event

  49. PRESIDENT’S REVENGE
OBAMA’S ANTI-TRUMP QUEST TO CRUSH AMERICA
Exclusive: Jesse Lee Peterson warns of outgoing president ‘behaving like a maniac’
    Published: 15 hours ago
    image: http://www.wnd.com/files/2012/02/Rev.-Jesse-Lee-Peterson_avatar.jpg

    President Barack Obama
    President Barack Obama
With just three weeks left in his final term as president, Barack Hussein Obama is behaving like a maniac; his desperate actions to salvage his disastrous legacy are unnerving the American people and our closest allies.

Obama is doing all he can to sabotage President-elect Donald Trump to prevent him from successfully undoing the failed socialist policies of the last eight years. But he didn’t start this quest yesterday. This past year Obama covered a lot of ground in his bid to diminish and jeopardize America:

Turning on Israel. In a shameful act of betrayal, Obama broke with decades of U.S. policy, allowing and reportedly encouraging a United Nations resolution condemning Israel for building settlements. The U.N.’s denunciation of the settlement emboldens the pro-terrorist Palestinian leadership and puts into question the future of more than 400,000 Israeli families. I have long said that Barack Obama is no different than his “mentor” Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and his support for the Palestinians proves it. We need to cease funding the U.N. – and get it out of the U.S.!

Manufacturing an international crisis with Russia. This week, Obama slapped Russia with a series of sanctions and diplomatic censures in response to a U.S. intelligence assessment that Moscow used cyber attacks to try to tamper with our election. Obama is looking to blame everyone else but himself for Hillary Clinton’s smackdown at the polls. Obama is angry that the corrupt inner workings of the Democratic Party were exposed. He is playing a dangerous game of chicken. Thankfully, Vladimir Putin has shown himself to be the bigger man, shrugging off Obama’s provocations.

Approving massive land grabs by the federal government. Obama’s designation of 1.35 million acres in Utah as a “national monument” is so extreme, even Democrats in the state oppose it. Sen. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah – an outspoken critic of Donald Trump – is so outraged by it that he is pleading for Trump to reverse it. The Obama administration has said it would indefinitely block drilling in parts of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, an attempt to stop Americans from capitalizing on their resources in the coming Trump administration.

On Wednesday, Obama will meet with Democrats on Capitol Hill to discuss ways they can try to stop Trump and the Republican Congress from rolling back Obamacare.

With less than three weeks from the inauguration of the new president, God only knows what further destruction Obama will wreak. We need to stay in prayer, be vigilant and give our full support to President-elect Trump as he dismantles Obama’s mess. Thank God for His mercy upon America.
