Today’s Barbados Advocate editorial makes for interesting reading in light of Prince Harry’s visit next week

Prince Harry
Prince Harry

We might be justly accused of being churlish hosts were we not to extend a warm Barbadian greeting to His Royal Highness, Prince Henry of Wales, familiarly known as Harry, on his visit to the island to represent Her Majesty in the celebrations for our fiftieth anniversary of Independence. Accordingly, we sincerely extend to the Prince a hearty welcome and a pleasant stay in these parts.

At the same time, however, his presence here reminds us of once more of our incongruent constitutional status; whereby even though we claim to be a sovereign nation and have indeed been so for the past fifty years, we continue to perpetuate the anomaly of retaining a foreign monarchy as the Head of State in the bloodline of the Royal Family of the United Kingdom. It is as if the declaration of Independence were merely a matter of acquiring a flag, a coat of arms and a national anthem and a Governor General [to replace the Governor] while we were content to abide by the former regime of governance.

This is Barbados after all. And it is not in our nature easily to accommodate change. So for the past half-century, apart from the objections of a relatively few, we have been content to permit the pre-Independence arrangements to subsist and to accord the highest constitutional office in our land not to a native but in tail to a foreign family.

It has not helped that the debate on this issue has been generally perceived in partisan political terms. Of course, we concede that such a reality is one of the incidents of our democracy, but it appears to us that whenever a governing administration proposes to alter the status quo, there arises a chorus of voices in partisan opposition, reminding the public of such quaint matters as the importance of UK tourism for the health of our economy, the exemplary graciousness of Her Majesty and our vulnerability to external aggression. To us, these smack rather as the cries of a mewling infant for its mother’s arms, rather than of the language of a mature individual ready to fend its way in the world.

We deduce from this reluctance to embrace a state of affairs whereby a native Barbadian might become Head of State, among other things, a certain Barbadian distaste for the elevation above him- or herself of anyone similarly placed as they are. Our attitude is reflected in the anecdote attributed to former Prime Minister and now national Hero, the Right Excellent Errol Barrow, that an individual could not have possibly written a book or achieved any similar distinction “because he used to live in we gap”.

So while we welcome the young Prince, we regret for more reasons than one that his visit had to be “official” rather than the “playing holiday” as referred to by his ancestor and namesake, Prince Hal, the future Henry V, in Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I. Hal nevertheless counseled-

“If all the year were playing holidays,

To sport would be as tedious as to work…”

Indeed, we regret too that his visit as the representative of the British Monarch, his grandmother, should still be necessary at this time. Our socio-constitutional ethos does not admit of the notion that a mere accident of birth should attribute a superior status to any one individual or family.

It is time for a governing administration to “bell the cat” and to ensure that we do not arrive at our Independence centennial under the existing anomalous governance arrangement.

It must not be forgotten that Great Britain did not obtained the island of Barbados through the legal channels, and that the blacks who now constitutes the majority on the chain of islands which constitutes the Caribbean archipelago were brought to the islands against their will. So if you’re saying that our unpaid labour entitle us to the island of Barbados then I would somewhat agree, but don’t you think that the descendants of the two native Indian tribes who were here before the white man and and the black man are entitled to the island of Barbados because these people are the rightful owners?

Let’s hope the clowns in parliament dont embarass themselves as Gaston Brown, prime minister of Antigua did by trying to pimp out the island to Harry, it’s very clear from the look on his face after the Brown tackiness that if he does not treat this Caribbean tour as a vacation, it will become even clearer that it’s the punishment it’s meant to be…lol

ACs….try not to kill Harry with ya asskissing..lol

Jeez…Dompey, do you know where the descendants of those native indian tribes are, none of them live in Barbados, many are scattered throughout the Caribbean and other places, but most of them can be found in Central America, Belize, a bread basket….why in hell would they even want to identify with Barbados, the dumb leaders or the social mess that is now Barbados.

The majority of any country rules that country, Barbados is now a black majority country. ..do the math.

  5. @ David,

    Apologies off message:

Could you please ask your legal expert – Jeff Cumberbach – to look into the subject matter below. Yes, this government appears to be mismanaging the Barbados economy. However, i have always sensed that it is doing so under duress. Take a look at the link below.

“The obscure legal system that lets corporations sue countries

Fifty years ago, an international legal system was created to protect the rights of foreign investors. Today, as companies win billions in damages, insiders say it has got dangerously out of control”……………..

Did I not say they are scattered throughout the Caribbean and elsewhere Dompey, many of us are descended from the Native Indians of the Caribbean and have also imherited bloodlines from other groups, what Vincent refers to as the pelaus.

  8. It is ironic that me, PUDRYR, Bushie and David know that Harry don’t want to be in Barbados unless they can sneak Meghan into the island.

If we had real real leaders we would be a republic all like now.

De ole man also will go on record to say that all of the notable BU Pan Africanists and “de white amn is the spawn of the devil” proselyters WILL BE NOTICEABLY ABSENT from this debate fearful that, should they comment about a living breathing representative of the Queen Mother, they will incur the arath of the various authorities once their commentary is reported by “the resident BU policeman and supporter of the Demons”

You will all know who that is given the response that will be soon forthcoming.

By the way, de ole man notes that ammmmmmm certain “pyrotechnically incompetent” denizens read people who burn down their house WHILE SLEEPING have now become a staple here on BU.

All politicians are wolves who collude with each other. The problem with the ministers in Barbados is one of mental weakness, it does not appear the others in the Caribbean are much better, they never matured mentally, but you do not want any minority in Barbados governing, they have for decades already created the present mess by being corrupters, bribers and manipulators of the past and present fools in both political parties. The people will be much too vulnerable which will create an eventual backlash when the continue their halfassed, small island racism and classism, you never allow a minority who lack basic intelligence and fair mindedness to govern a majority country, …….you will experience echoes of 1937.

  24. @ David,

“…..stealing from others is their survival kit (white people).” Never has a truer word been spoken.

I am certain that JC and the very green and naïve Alicia Nicholls (Caribbean Trade Law and Development) are familiar with this obscene, and opaque legal system that puts into peril the concept of the nation state. Those in the know should be alerting their citizens of the perils of doing business with foreign corporations.

I am certain that there must be a correlation between our rapid decline as a nation and our commitment to open world trade agreements.

    @ Piece,
    Keep your chin up.
    You’ve done your piece.
It’s time for others to do theirs.

I’ve just been witnessing some dumb-arsed white Cubans in Miami celebrating with extreme vigour the death of the great Fidel Castro. What idiots!

  30. @ Piece Uh De ROck Yeah Right,

Fidel Castro prevented Cuba from becoming the ( best ?) Tourist Island in the Caribbean.

Cuba was well on its way to becoming the best Gambling resort and Whorehouse in the Caribbean.

Cuba would have been a combination Las Vegas / Thailand.

  31. Like it or not, most people in the Caribbean continue to love their British masters and want to feel that they are part of a Commonwealth led by the Royal Family.

The latest evidence for this comes from Grenada where the voters have just rejected a proposal to replace the UK Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice.

In fact, all talk of severing constitutional ties with London is silly. Our legal system, our government, and most of our governing ideas are borrowed from the UK.

We are too stupid to think for ourselves on these big questions. When you don’t have the brains for self-government …

I gotta agree, it’s stupidy, lack of knowledge and sleazy politicians who mislead a population who did not research what they were voting for, most Grenadians would not do the necessary research that would help them understand why they needed those 7 important amendments to their constitution for their personal progress and that of generations of future Grenadians, out of 70,000 only 25, 000 voted…..and they would much prefer listen to lying politicians for their information anyway.

Bad move, they will remain in the 1950s for another 50 years….another hundred years of stagnation.

T’would be smack for some of you as long as we do not lick the ass of the master.

Self Determination by wunna niggers is never an option cause for such to ensue wunna would have to grow a pair.

    @ Hants

Thailand is a rollicking whore house and Las Vegas is the aesthetically permissable manifestation of the Mafia.

But , and in so commencing this sentence one has broken the cardinal rule, for there to be any desire for self determination among the niggers shuch would mean anarchy and, as Thomas Sankara found out in Volte now Burkina Faso, that is the mark of death.

Isn’t that such an anomaly of gargantuan proportion?

In one breath some of wunna does promote the “why dont all you blacks go back to africa where wunna come from” and, incredulously, wunna does come to us monkeys, in africa, the same place you want us to return to and rape us for the plentitude of resources under our earth, AND WILL ASSASSINATE THE ONES OF US, the Sankaras, the Lumumbas, and even the attempt thusly with the Fidels WHO WISH SELF ENFRANCHISEMENT!!!

How many of you have been to Cuba? Recently?

The problem is that a revolution say that of the United States of America, or Russia, or France, or China, they get to fashion the Story which the world sees and by which it is embellished a la 1776 Independence Charter or Magna Carta but, for poor ole Cuba any non caucasian visionary is called a butcher by election machine hackers and it becomes wunna gospel

@Piece Uh De ROck Yeah Right – INRI November 27, 2016 at 10:20 AM …that is a rather lop-sided piece.

The issue with Fidel or (Sankarra) is not the colour of their skin but rather the colour of the heart and soul. Stalin was ‘crucified’ as a depot and butcher. He had the same colour heart and soul. Different outer covering.

They are all acolytes of the mantra “… that a man who wants to act virtuously in every way necessarily comes to grief among so many who are not virtuous.”

Having taken leadership they could have pivoted east, west or in-between to maintain a different ‘existentialism’.

We don’t condemn them for those they killed (because that is the currency of any strong leader) but we can condemn them for policies which maintained THEIR self-enfranchisement to eternity. When they were born all sentient ideas on governance and leadership did not revert to them completely.

Surely hail their ‘virtues’ but in a world lacking virtuous men we can be reminded that “Hatred is gained as much by good works as by evil.”….not much to do with ‘Self Determination by wunna niggers’ on that point really.

  45. @Pieceofde………I’ll address u directly since I don’t play virtual games. Just saw ur post @ 10:20am. I support an individual that you didn’t (as if ur support mattered at all) and I’m a nigger who needs ts for self-determination? Old man ur stupidity is mind-blowing.You’ve just proven urself to be an ass. Whatever virtual respect I had for you has now been deleted. Bang!

If u wanted Hillary rotten clinton to be the next POTUS, why didn’t u get a boat load of ur ilk, come to DC and let Obama know that u come to support HRC.

What do you know about self-determination living on an island whose life-blood is contingent on external factors. Self-determination for me is signing my own pay cheque do you sign yours? And I don’t need any flaccid organs to do that.

When persons like you understand how the affairs of this world are conducted, then maybe you could influence my decisions. But from where you sit that’s virtually impossible.
