In 2014, while addressing the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama said:

“In the end, that’s what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope. John Edwards calls on us to hope. I’m not talking about blind optimism here — the almost wilful ignorance that thinks unemployment will go away if we just don’t talk about it, or the health care crisis will solve itself if we just ignore it. No, I’m talking about something more substantial. It’s the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker’s son who dares to defy the odds; the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too. Hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty. The audacity of hope!

Three years later, he wrote a book entitled the Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream. In that book he calls for a new kind of politics that unites the people and a vision for the political future of the USA. That speech and that theme propelled him on to the national platform eventually paving the way for him to become the 44th President of the United States of America.

The book became a best seller and President Obama brought eight years of growth to an economy that was on the road to disaster. In essence he had brought the hope that the people need there and then to believe that America could be great again. His was not a doctrine of fear but of what the people could achieve united. Though there were many stumbling blocks in his way, his has been the most successful Presidency in living memory.

In the recent campaign running up to the election, Donald Trump ran on a slogan of “Making America Great Again.” Perhaps Mr. Trump did not read President Obama’s book as his campaign was not based on hope. Instead it instilled fear into the Republicans base; fear that they had lost America. Fear was the weapon of destruction used by Mr. Trump to advocate racism, misogyny, bigotry, lies, deceit, albeit successfully to become the President elect of the USA.

That weapon can only be described as a two edged sword because the fear that was propagated by Mr. Trump has now taken hold on the other half of the country who did not vote for him as his campaigning promises will affect their civil liberties. The Mexicans now fear deportation, the Muslims religious persecution, the LGB Community that their rights will be taken away; the black population that again that their lives will not matter and; women that their rights will rescind to the 1950’s. In essence, Donald Trump triumphed because of the audacity of fear.

Since the election Some of the American people, especially the youth are challenging the institutions created by the founding fathers through protests in many cities and online petitions. These actions after a general election are unprecedented as the act by the early colonist of dumping tea in the Boston Harbor. The older people seem to have accepted that it is a done deal while many of the youth are claiming that the President elect is not there President. This has never been challenged before.

Although the Constitution was designed with separation of powers and clear rules for the impeachment of a President, this may not become a reality as both the House of Representatives and the Congress are controlled by Republicans.

More importantly, although the Constitution begins with “We the people” it does not provide the people with any recourse if they wish to remove a president elect. No one knows what will happen if the protests escalate. These groups must unite and state their clear goals.

Like a play in which the writer has only written two acts, this story is far from over. The county has elected a Republican House of Representatives and Senate along with a Republican President; a businessman known as The Donald who comes with an empire and has set the tone for his absolute rule (not that of his Administration) may be headed towards a constitutional crisis.

On introspection if that famous conversation between Mrs. Powell of Philadelphia and Benjamin Franklin were to take place today regarding the status of the country, and she asked “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” One can say with some degree of certainty that his response would be “A monarchy, what a waste of tea!”

Barbados has always been a small society/ economy operating in the world. The challenges have always been there and we have overcome them to meet new challenges whenever they arise. What is the problem now?
You talk about a finite world .
Not even physicists talk in those terms. They will tell you that matter cannot be destroyed. So Bush Tea is right you need to take a spiritualist perspective sometimes and realize that the limitations you see may only exist in your mind. Sometimes we need to change our mindsets.
We often say we need more. But do we? Why do we need more ? To have bragging rights? Do the abundance of things define who we are?

There is just no cure for stupidity.

(CNN)A Tennessee corrections official is out of a job after he made several inflammatory Facebook posts, including one where he said “the KKK is more American” than President Obama and another where he hoped the First Family was hanged.

David Barber was the deputy director of corrections for Shelby County for 17 years. The posts he made were on his personal Facebook page — but the backlash was immediate when they came to light.

One said, “The KKK is more American than the illegal president!”
Another said, “I TRUMP wins and obummer cannot start martial law, he will run to his new mansion in thaArab world to hide. Hopefully the Muslims will eliminate him and mooshelle as queers.”
There were several others. In one, he posted an item about the President and the First Lady and wrote, “Arrest convict hang and confiscate all assets.”

Yet another one said, “I am concerned that media using mixed race couple’s in ads as normal is one way liberal’s are trying to eliminate the white race.”
Shelby County Commission Chairman Melvin Burgess, responding to the KKK post, called it “completely unacceptable.”
“We must put an end to the racist rhetoric in this country and come together,” he said. “It was not alright and was unacceptable for Barber to make racist statements supporting the Ku Klux Klan.”

Mayor Mark Luttrell told CNN affilate WREG that because the posts were on Barber’s private page, they didn’t appear to violate county policy. However, the county is now looking into creating a social media policy.

“Anyone in a leadership position at Shelby County Government is held at a high standard of behavior, both on and off the job,” Luttrell said.
On Wednesday, Barber offered his resignation to the mayor. “I sincerely regret that I was the scandal we were so happy to have avoided for so long. Please know that I meant no ill and hope to restore your confidence in me in the future,”

Do you deny natural resources are finite?

There is the spiritual element to humankind BUT one has to apply a liberal dose of pragmatism as well.

A natural resource may become harder to retrieve but by the time that point arrives the production process may find another resource to replace that element.
Take money. It was first gold and silver;then paper money; then an entry on a banks ledger,; then magnetic strips on a plastic card then a number of negative and positive electrical charges in a computer room.
Take house construction: canvas tents, later wooden buildings ; later stone blocks ;then concrete and steel buildings etc . I hope you get the drift.

Each of these developments replaced a natural resource or used less and less of it.

In other words do not stress yourself too much. Stress, anxiety and fears use up energy that can be transferred to more creative and innovative processes.

Here too right in our backyard in a country governed in inverted commas by blacks supposedly independent having thrown off the shackles of colonialism and with the white brethren in the minority still large and in charge followed by the brethren of the Indian ethnicity. So do not knock USA Bernard lets see how we can level the playing field at home first.

  9. @Bush Tea November 16, 2016 at 10:27 AM “President Obama a poor black fella out of CHICAGO (of all places)”

    Not Chicago.

    Born in Hawaii.

    Raised in Hawaii and Indonesia.

Arrived U.S. mainland (California) for college when he was a young adult.

Then to university in New York City.

    And law school in Connecticut

Then to Chicago as a full grown man.

  10. NorthernObserver Avatar

He studied law at Harvard, which is in Mass not CT.

After his undergraduate degree from Columbia in NY, he worked for 5 years before entering Harvard, and 3 of those I believe were in the Chicago area. He would return to Chicago after Harvard and during the summers. It was during one summer he met Michelle, they worked at the same law firm. Incidentally she also has a law degree from Harvard, but graduated the year Obama entered Harvard. She is younger but went straight from Undergrad to Law School.

Charles….your weak black politicians, government ministers allow that disparity to continue uninterrupted as I have said on here a thousand times, it could never happen if not allowed by the black leaders, minorities cannot up and decide they are controlling anything including the politicians. …without their tacit approval and collusion.

Pressure has to be brought to bear on politicians and government ministers, and lawyers and many others who have enabled this gross, repugnant, unfair to the majority practice for decades….to either bring it to an end, or have their names forever be associated with the filthy practice.

Such a small handfull of minorities should never have had such unfettered access to the taxpayer paid leaders to begin with, it started in the 70s and is now a destructive force.

  12. I was talking to my wife just yesterday as to whether or not President Obama ever visited the Caribbean during his tenure? We know that his has visited Europe, Asia and Africa several times during his presidency, but I can’t recall ever hearing of our first Black president on a tour to the chain of islands which constitutes the Caribbean archipelago? His has been a sad disappointment for those of us whom are clad in the colour black because it is still my belief that President Obama by his mere influence could have done more to address some of the challenges confronting Black people of today.

  13. Is there any doubt in our minds now as to whether Bill Clinton had been termed our first black president? Some people look at President Clinton’s record on crime and formed the conclusion that he is responsible for the incarceration of countless number of Black people in the 1990s, but one had to have been familiar with the drug culture in America during the 1990s, to really understand why Clinton did such a thing. With that out of the way, if one compare the records of Obama and Clinton with respect to addressing some of the needs and concerns of Black people thoughout the western hemisphere, one should see that Clinton has done more, and well as visited the region more than Mr. Obama has done thus far during his tenure.

Dompey…Obama was right to stay away from yall nuisance asses in the Caribbean, he only needed one visit to the Caribbean to see that many of the problems the people are experiencing. ..are caused by the leaders…

…..who the hell in their right minds would want to get involved in any of that…no one with intelligence for sure….

Barbados is the poster child for what is wrong with the black leaders and all the problems they create for themselves…and heap on their own people….in the Caribbean.

Obama warned them that their islands are small and much more manageable than what he had inherited…did they listen…no…, what did yall want him to do, leave Washington and come and manage the islands for the ministers….while they were out collecting their bribes from the minorities.

    Yall need a life…lol

And the drug culture in the US is so much better now since Clinton and the Rockefeller 3 strikes……Dompey, go and sleep, ya will feel better after a few more hours.

    “(Actor Michael Shannon.Jonathan Ernst/Reuters; Pascal Le Segretain/Getty)
Actor Michael Shannon held nothing back about the 2016 presidential election and President-elect Donald Trump while promoting his new film “Nocturnal Animals” in a new interview with Rogerebert.com.
When asked whether he could make sense of how exactly Trump was elected, Shannon had a vitriolic response about Trump’s supporters.

“Yeah, I’ll tell you how to make sense of it: This country’s filled with ignorant jackasses,” he said. “The big red dildo running through the middle of our country needs to be annexed to be its own country of moronic a–holes. You can call it the United States of Moronic F—ing A–holes.”

Shannon (“Man of Steel,” “Take Shelter”) said he thought the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency had begun to feel “like a lie” because racism and sexism had been “festering underneath the whole time” in disenchanted Trump voters.

“A lot of these people, they don’t know why the f— they’re alive,” he said. “They’re doing drugs, f—ing killing themselves. Because they’re like, ‘Why the f— am I alive? I can’t get a job, I don’t know anything about anything, I have no curiosity for life or the world.’ So this Trump thing is like getting a box of firecrackers, or something. It’s like, ‘Well, this will be fun for a little while, this’ll kill some time.’ Because, y’know, the jackass will be amusing on television, stay stupid s—.”

Shannon went on to call Trump’s presidency “the worst thing that’s ever happened.”

It’s the worst,” he said. “This guy is going to destroy civilization as we know it, and the earth, and all because of these people who don’t have any idea why they’re alive.”

As we go along. ..this should help.

“The most important thing in a functional society is a well-informed public. What we have now is not only uninformed but misinformed masses.”

How do we combat this problem? Easy, we have to do some work. While I could give a long dissertation on what exactly that means, no one has the patience to read it all, so here are five quick steps that’ll fit in a meme…

Read first. Then share. I myself am guilty of basing comments or even clicking share based on the headline. This is the worst thing any of us could do. Stop being lazy.
Check the source (and their sources). In the age of new media true and valid information comes from non-traditional sources but so does a lot of garbage. Any article that posts facts, figures or quotes should provide a source for that information. If there is no backup for their claims, move on.
Watch out for recycled stories. One thing that seems to be feeding into the misinformation problem is when old stories are being presented as happening now. Check the date on the story before you read on. You’ll be shocked to see how many are from another time and aren’t applicable to the current event you thought they were talking about.
If you care about facts, ignore the blatantly slanted. Having a slant or taking a position on a story is not wrong in itself. What is wrong is when these ideas are taken as unbiased fact. You can avoid all of this by simply avoiding those sites to start with. Any website with the words: Conservative, Liberal, Democrat, Republican, etc. in the title are just advertising how slanted they are. That’s ok if you choose to live in your side’s bubble but please don’t have any delusions that these stories reflect the whole picture.
Google it. God (and Sergey) gave us Google for a reason. If you see a story that’s unbelievable or has no sources or even if it does, verify. See if the same facts are reported across multiple outlets. See if anyone disputes these facts. Read these pieces and then make up your mind.

If we could all take these simple steps our society would be a better place. We all have opinions and leanings. There is nothing wrong with that but could we at least all come from a starting point based on facts and reality?

The truth is, sharing illogical things begins to erode YOUR credibility and it makes you look foolish. Trust me, I speak from experience.

    Now go share this, please.

This is what corruption breeds….government ministers and politicians should take note. Clinton was sure she was going to be president and have immunity from all future crimes she planned to commit against the Haitian people, she was so sure, being sure nearly killed Killary.

Reddit User billclintonisarap1st has reportedly uncovered a new mysterious death linked to Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation. His reddit post reports that Monica Petersen was found dead under “suspicious circumstances” while working for the Human Trafficking Center in Haiti.
Monica had been critical of the Clinton Foundation’s dealings even sharing a highly detailed article highlighting Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation’s despicable dealings in Haiti as well as their connections to Billionaire Carlos Slim and the New York Times.
A friend reports on what she was researching:

    screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-2-15-06-pm
As we know, Hillary has ties to convicted sex offender and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. In addition, Hillary was involved in the NGO run by Laura Silsby, the former director of the The New Life Children’s Refuge. She was caught attempting to steal and smuggle 33 children from Haiti, most of whom weren’t even orphans at the time:

Hillary has a LONG history of interest in Ms. Silsby. Wikileak emails dating back till at least 2001 have been found in her archives discussing Laura’s NGO. Laura had claimed she planned to build an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, but authorities in the country said she never submitted an application for this purpose. They instead located to Haiti.

Huma Abedin was constantly forwarding Hillary articles on this woman’s organization:

One of the first things Hillary did when she took over the scene in Haiti was to get Laura off the hook:

And the attorney who represented Laura Silsby? A man who was himself convicted as a sex trafficker:

    https://wikileaks.org/gifiles/docs/32/323249_-os-haiti-us-legal-adviser-to-u-s-haiti-missionaries.html

Even more disturbing, we uncovered an email in Wikileaks where they are literally pricing how much it costs to transport children:

Again, this was the same group that got busted by Haitian Authorities trying to Traffic kids.

    They’re in the Clinton Emails:

What was going on here? Reddit commenters are asking questions:

As golfrinserepeat opined, “Just another coincidental death that happens whenever anyone looks too close into Clinton’s dirty laundry.”

Another poster commented, “This is getting even spookier

Threats to the Caribbean the leaders must take very seriously, it’s reality, nit politicians fantasy.

“As part of a nationwide series of university student walkouts in protest of Republican President-elect Donald J. Trump’s proposed policy initiatives regarding immigration and the deportation of criminal undocumented immigrants, nearly a thousand students and faculty members at Rutgers University staged a rally and march in downtown. “(Photo by Albin Lohr-Jones/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images)

    By NAN Business Editor
News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Nov. 18, 2016: The economic impact on the Caribbean of a Donald Trump administration could be problematic. David Jessop, a consultant to the Caribbean Council, has identified five possible economic implications on the region. They are:

    1: Abandoning Existing Trade Deals
Donald Trump has said that he will abandon existing trade deals. If he is genuinely intent on doing this, it is not hard to see his administration making demands for access for US goods and services on the basis of reciprocity, says Jessop. It is also possible that tax penalties would be levied on those US manufacturers who have off-shored their manufacturing or assembly plants into locations like the Caribbean to take advantage of a more favorable tax environment.

2: Picking Up The Cost Of Its Own Security.
Trump may require the Caribbean to fully meet the costs of its own security; for example, guaranteeing the safety of US visitors, Jessop says especially given China’s growing and central role in investment to access the US market in manufacturing and services in the Caribbean region.

3: Tearing Up Of The Ratified Global Agreement On Climate Change
If true to his word, Jessop says, Trump could within days of taking office use executive action to tear up the recently ratified global agreement on climate change, a text of existential importance to the Caribbean. This will be a decision that will require the region to react.

    4: Transactional Relationship With Cuba.
Trump has made it clear, in Cuba’s case, that he would want a transactional relationship. He intends, he said, to “make it rough …. until a really good deal can be made for the Cuban people and for the United States.”
“We have to make a deal that’s good for the Cuban people and I would make sure that the deal is either made, or I’d have nothing to do with them,” he told a Miami radio station just a few days before being elected. It is a proposition Havana is unlikely to respond well to, says Jessop.

5: Pitting The Rest Of The Hemisphere Against The US
Hemispheric groupings like the Organization of American States (OAS) or the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to have to take a position against Trump’s strong authoritarian leadership stance, potentially pitting the rest of the hemisphere against the US”

“The United States has 5% of the world’s population, yet we have nearly 25% of the world’s prison population. Our prison population has grown nearly ten-fold in my lifetime. After my day with Defy, I asked friends who work in the criminal justice system for additional resources about mass incarceration in the United States, and they recommended two books (The New Jim Crow and Just Mercy) and a recent Netflix documentary, 13th:

If you’re curious about the deliberately racial foundation on which mass incarceration is built, you should read The New Jim Crow or watch 13th. We now imprison a larger percentage of our Black population than South Africa did at the height of apartheid. Once incarcerated, individuals often lose access to many of the federal assistance programs designed to help our least fortunate. In most states, they lose the right to vote. Whether they get it back (and when) varies by state. Once released from prison, the lack of assistance makes surviving and thriving exceedingly difficult.

This is borne out by the numbers: the prison recidivism rate in the United States shows that once you’ve been in prison once, you’ll almost certainly go back. Over two thirds of prisoners who are released from prison are back in prison within three years.”
