Barbados Underground supports the Rastafari family in its fight against the establishment -Barbados Child Care Board to win custody of their children. The following is a report by Simba Simba – Barbados Underground
Is this family being 'persecuted' because they are Rastafarians?
Is this family being ‘persecuted’ because they are Rastafarians?

The African Heritage Foundation (AHF) accompanied the Lashley family to their court hearing regarding the custody of their two children today (27/10/2016). The Barbados Child Care Board has brought a custody case against this family in an attempt to take custody of their two children and make them wards of the state. The foundation of their case is that the Ministry of Education has brought a case against the family for failing to send their children to school and not following proper procedure which would allow them to home school.

On Monday the 24th October the AHF represented by myself and Ms Leah Clarke along with Attorney at Law Mr Ajamu Boardi met with officials of the Ministry of Education to discuss the best way forward in the above mentioned case. It was stated by all parties present that we were all acting in the best interest of the children. We were told what the Ministry of Education required for the allowing of home schooling. It was highlighted that although a letter was sent in by the Lashley family to the Ministry of Education stating their intention to continue home schooling it was not accepted by the ministry as that. It was also stated that a curriculum and a work timetable had to be submitted along with names and qualification of intended educators. The AHF agreed to their request and further clarified the position of the parents in the methodology of how they would like their children schooled and the role they as the parents would play. It was agreed by all present that the religious perspectives and rights of the family be strictly observed as we proceeded in this delicate matter of religion vs education and institution. A question was asked by the AHF about assessments for the children. The Ministry of Education stated that no assessments of the children were carried out on their part. We the AHF then informed them that our organization had arranged to have assessments done and then summaries of the assessments for the two children were handed over to the representatives of the Ministry of Education. It must be noted that the assessments done were carried out by a professional in that field who also works on the behalf of the said ministry from time to time.

Within two days a revised letter of application to home school, with curriculum, work time table and intended educators with their qualifications was submitted to the Ministry of Education by the AHF on behalf of the Lashley family with their consent. Today the 27th October 27, 2016 the AHF submitted an affidavit that states our continued support of this family in the area of the education of their children.

With all this being done it would seem that the judge is moving in the direction of throwing the case out and has even questioned the jurisdiction of his court in hearing such a matter. He is of the opinion that the best place for the children at present is with their parents. However the Child Care Board seems relentless in their efforts to make the children wards of the state. According to what has been stated before it would seem that all other parties have the best interest of the children at heart and are working together to attain the best solution in this matter. It is only the Child Care Board that seems to be in it for the win and not acting in the best interest of the children. In the light of all the cooperation and extended assistance being given one would think the wellbeing of the children educationally would no longer be an issue. That is not the case. Even with all the discourse in the society about home schooling being held at various levels of our society and the overwhelming support for it as a viable means of instruction for children, the Child Care Board presses on as if the idea of home schooling was absurd.

I am left now with the feeling that this case was never about the wellbeing of the children but some sort of attack on this family to make an example of them. A warning perhaps, to other Rastafari families who have issues with the education system and would like to educate their children at home, to desist with this thought, seems to be the motive of the Child Care Board. Seeing it has been put out there by several political entities that home schooling is prevalent in Barbados and that the Child Care Board is not dragging parents that home school left and right before the court is an indicator that the real motive is not to fight home schooling but to fight a certain section of the community that would like to have this option open to them. Everyone and their grandparents agree that the Child Care Board has been found wanting in their duties of protecting children in Barbados. Cases of the abuse of children that have been reported to the Child Care Board that have been dealt with in less than satisfactory ways, that have led to the death of children are well documented in the minds eye of the Barbados society. Maybe this strong handed approach by the Child Care Board is a statement to Barbados saying “hey look we actually are working to keep our children protected from various forms of abuse.” Seeing that they are now out to save unabused children and remove them from the safe and loving environment of their parent’s shows that maybe the Child Care Board is not very clear on what abuse really is when it pertains to children.

Tomorrow morning the judge will give his decision on the matter. Will these two Rastafari children become wards of the state or will they be left in the custody of their parents? No matter the outcome, something needs to be done with the Child Care Board by those with the power to act. I hope that the Rastafari community can mobilize petitions for the government and UNICEF to look into this case. The Child Care Board needs shaking up. Lend a hand and help shake it.

Again Gazer, there is no friction between myself and anyone. I have cussed and been cussed by Pieces, Bushie, Sunny and others. Life moves on. Dr GP is relentless with his vitriol and sometimes I do not back down. I certainly would not call that friction. Invigorating, lively blogging.

@David October 28, 2016 at 3:23 PM.. you have stated your case well and I don’y want to belabor this Dr GP matter but frankly I think it goes to the core of what you do and what your blog represents.

As you said “It is not about censoring him” but then it must definitely be about censoring BU.

You cannot prosecute the intransigence of the CCB here; welcome and solicit documents from out-spoken, probably crass and uncouth whistle-blowers and then react thus.

Now let’s agree that as I said before this is YOUR blog, sweat and tears. I respect your hard-work on this blog – Good Lawd we all do and those with any gray matter recognize the tremendous work you and your team exert to make it look so easy.

BUT Mr Blogmaster you absolutely knew from day one “… the sacrifice [needed] to make this possible.”

And as surely you knew there would be lots of BS..and lots of GPs. So there is no way you can be so tired nine years later that a troll like him can dampen your energy.

He represents 100% of MANY wrongs about our society. The same wrongs that drove you to start this activism.

Are you actually raising the first white flag of being too fed-up!

And to the point do you think that anyone who reads this blog regularly and was hungry for the path and Word of the God would embrace anything Dr GP preaches based on the vitriol he otherwise spews about others. If all his divinity students know that this is his alter ego then what interesting people they are too!

Allowing him to ‘proselytize’ his hateful demeanor is the exact remedy for thinking people to see what his God and indeed his country has wrought…

Don’t hide him..LET THE MAN SPEAK, unfiltered. Isn’t your blog about uncovering the true underbelly of our society, David!

Anyhow, I gone and dun wid this; after all the scholarly fellow calls me a cur and slime…so let me slither away tail between legs !

The day you present an original idea here on BU is day I will regard you as someone who is worthy of my respect adulation because really, a lot of what you throw at a given topic here before deliberation are the ideas beholding to those who were before you or those who are amongst you. Because let’s face it guy, can’t you really boast of ideology, philosophy or theory that is exclusive your own? Yes, I will admit and do agree that when it comes to expessing the ideas of others, that you’re well capable of doing that, but at the end of the day, do you really ascertain a level of satisfaction by articulating the ideas of others with a degree of competence? Do you not feel a level dissatisfaction not being able to add your your name to the treasure chest of human knowledge and achievement?

Who cares what you think? An opinion is only valid if you valid that opinion, and quite frankly, I could care less what you think of me or in what manner you regard me, because as far as I am concerned, you do not speak as an authority on anything. Why ought I or anyone else here listen to anything you have to say on the issue validation?

I see that you’re out of touched with the BU blog because had you been on the blog a coupled of weeks ago, you wouldn’t have made the statement you did regarding your approval of Artax here.

Sir, are you not aware of the fact that the eldership here on the BU blog joined forces, and gave Artax and old time ass whopping because he had made some miscalculations regarding the role in a specific government agency.

Well, Bush Tea led the charged follow by Mr. Caswell Franklyn who gave it tah de young man the way Whitaker Five Killers ( Track Suit Top, Dirty Harry, Starsky, Invader 1 and Rat Brown) from the CID gave tah Mark Young, Sandy Fly, Theophilus Piles, Pack Rat and a number of dem Bajan bad boys who now repose tranquilly in the Great Beyond.

  12. Anonymous

Pack Rat from Bush Hall was feared the most by police back in the day, and even more so than Big Michael, Mark Young, and Buddy Brathwaite because he would physically assaulted police every chance he got, until my good friend Constable Cumberbatch lighted (shot) him up one evening at the National Stadium.

  13. Barbados notorious criminals back in the day

    1) Dr. Rat
    2) Buddy Brathwaite
    3) Mark Young
    4) Theophilus Pile
    5) Big Michael
    6) Derek McCollin
    7) Bend Toe
    8) Teeca
    9) Barabas
    10) Pack Rat
    11) Sand Fly
    12) Harding
    13) Hall
    14) Bradshaw
    15) Oliver

And Starksky from the CID could have easily been one of them had he not been a police because he had all the traits of a true Bajan bad boy.

  14. What message did the judge send to the State and the Rastafarian family after throwing out the sentencing phase of the case
This is a case that have been tossed up in the air with no guarantee as to how govt should proceed or take action against families who want to home school their children,The judge in the case felt that the family was wrong by not entering their children into a public or private institution of learning.
Now here in light of a yesterday decision where the sentencing phase was thrown out the public is no where better off as to what choice if having a need to home school would give them the security of not having to be prosecuted by the state in lieu of the fact there was a guilty sentence placed on the heads of the family in the case brought against them by the state

    So sad to see that the thrust of this blog suffered at the hands or should I say at the finger tips of a religious zealot. Too many times we saw where a deliberate attempt to denigrate the noble passage of discussion met with success. Too many times we saw where the combination of contempt and blatant disrespect for the alternative view , solicited vitriolic spasms that ventured well outside the bounds of respectability. The genesis of these spasms dare I say, is rooted in religious zealotry where there is no room for the opposing view. While I cannot speak for others I can say that I have learned much from my visits to this RUM SHOP and I am quite able to discern where brilliance oftentimes was stunted by the sickness that Religious Zealotry is. As I have said before we will sooner see Casper the friendly ghost before we recognize a true Christian.   23. @ Dompey:- I am NOT placing all the blame on anyone. All I’m saying is that if the children are being removed due to Government’s policies on homeschooling. Then what’s the difference with the one who is in schools. The funny thing about parents fighting,I can remember oh so well how men in Barbados seem to think that their women were punching bags or soccer balls. And would jump in them even in public. I grew up with that same dumb situation. But it didn’t make me step out and do as I saw this man who abused my mother. We as humans beings are capable of making choices on our own. I read from time to time,and see videos of children in Barbados fighting in the schools, and in the streets. And half of the times they themselves seem to be lost as to why they are fighting in the first place; One thing that I have noticed as a boy when I was in Barbados. The rule was,do as I say,but not as I do. So, in essence, it was like double standards. And even in the churches many figureheads weren’t even doing the right things either;

  24. Anonymouse

These are not my words Sir because Einstein has been quoted of said: is he wasn’t a genius and that he just pondered the question with deeper insight than most men. But after Einstein’s death his brain was examined and it was discovered that his parietal lobe was much larger than the average human being. The parietal lobe Anonymouse is responsible for the spatial and mathematical skills, but of course, Einstein obviously, neither did the scientific community at the time knew he was genius on the accounted of his extraordinary brain.

  25. Mr. C

I would unequivocally agree with you on one point and it is point I shall continue to argue, and that is we were reared on a philosophy of hypocrisy With that being said, even though I believe in personal responsibility and taking responsibility for one’s actions as for as the young people are concerned, I still cannot attribute blame unilaterally to the young people with respect to how their conduct themselves at home and in the public arena. When have our political leaders, the example of which the young people are to emulate caught tape telling one another kiss out yah madda scunt.

De ole man was very happy to see that the RASTAFARIAN PARENTS Charles Lashley and Kim Jackman matter was thrown out of court.

It bodes well for the second matter to be heard in December

I was reading the newspaper article in the Nation (oh dear me, de ole man is consorting with the enemy and came across this passage that was indeed an assassination of english.

“It was just after 3 p.m. when Frederick handed down his decision in the courtroom, which included president of the African Heritage Foundation Paul Rock and his wife, along with the defence team, led by Andrew Pilgrim QC and including Sian Lange, Douglas Trotman and Ajamu Boardi…”

Is this Carl Moore’s progeny? is this what he oversees or once oversaw at the Nation??

…handed down his decision …”in the courtroom”? where else could he have handed it down, in the HQ of the $60 Million Barbados Water Authority?

…in the courtroom…”which included?” how the dompey (or is that donkey? well they are both the same arent they (watch how Donkey is going to respond three times to that reference to his name.

How the donkey can “the courtroom”, an inanimate noun, “include” i.e. contain as a subordinate element, live beings?

I really think that there is a need for rudimentary Latin to be taught at these institutions of higher education so that these doufuses would understand how stupid their articles, which cost $2.25 sound and look to the world.

Then, as if to show the paucity of their understanding and grasp of the english language, having incorrectly used the word include, the primary school reporter, one TAMEISHA SOBERS, tameishasobers@nationnews.com goes on to repeat the same verb (used as object) later in the same sentence as if her vocabulary was single word AND the QUARK software at the company (sorry Publisher or Scribble of whatever they use nowadays) could not find another synonym like “comprised”

    @ The Honourable Blogmaster

Can the ole man rise to answer your question?

Some weeks ago de ole man asked two of the more seasoned bloggers whom I respect whether they would be prepared to put their money where their mouth was and is.

Both men did not respond and while I knew that that would be the outcome of the attempt, mine was the following objective which I feel confident will address your concerns per promulgating the BU effort across the country.

    SMS and Texts

SIM cards purchased overseas can be “anonymized” so that the person paying for the account, who in this case does not want their identity to be known to the wicked spiteful successive bajan administrations led by the BLP and the DLP would not have their identity published all over barbados.

What is required in an IMEI on a US network which has an agreement with our local carrier(s) for SMS interconnect services.

So that a non regional carrier with “free” SMS services could be used with a local DBF to propagate the BU message as a blast to the bajans on that database.

Like BU on Face book or some other inane competition which is sponsored by one of the local wellwishers who just giving a dinner for two, or 50 gallon of paint, or a night at one of the hotels or the services or products one of the Frustrated Business Menses that frequent the BU site, who are in pain because of this Demonic Lying Party would be your incentive.

At the end of the day, the silent Revolution that we are seeking to achieve is one of broadcasting the message to nuff more people and getting whatever one wants out there “out there”

But then again, if i could be so bold as to use some of the BU Rum Shop terminology of my Dr. GP, such would require the active interaction of serious men and women in the diaspora who really serious bout Bajans Want Change and are not, to paraphrase my Dearest Suzanne, “just here in the Rum Shop pun a daily basis to show how smart we are with our pretty words”

Where i “come from” we do not know failure.

You might find yourself stymied for a little while but my brother in arms, you gots to take that bunker, or die trying.

The conventional means are not working and are taking too long so you got to carry the fight to the trenches.

But I is jes an ingrunt ole man who does get heah pun a day and type my foolishness and seek spiritual guidance in de rum shop.

doan mind me, probbly effing i used to drink, i woulda ask TheGazer to give me a swig of his Cockspur Ole Gold or ask Amused to give me one of his tampis to get more high than I normally am pun this madman talk, you think?

  35. The matter being thrown out on a technicality does not bode well for conclusion in the event a similar circumstance occurs bearing in mind the initial phase of the case rendered a guilty verdict which leaves question as to whether yesterday decision means that the entire first phase of the case including the guilty verdict was also part of yesterday decision

  36. Had the Rastafarians not withdrawn themselves from society early on, this would NEVER had ocurred. I hope that it is a wake up call for them. Barbados is to small for any group, religious or otherwise to marginalize itself from society. This is not Jamaica.

Do you see how helpless Peter feels he cant stop his dirty, criminal deeds from being exposed to everyone on the island, that is the same way many lawyers and claimants feel when Peter pays his little weasel lawyers to tell lies incessantly to the judges and refuses to let the cases close, wasting the courts, judges and everyone else’s time, clogging the supreme court for years and disrupting the system, for his greed and viciousness.”

    @ The Honourable Blogmaster.

Your observation is noted but I will respond this way.

There are three styles on the Stoopid Cartoon blog.

The Egalitarian embodied in Dearest Suzanne – who drops licks equally across the whole spectrum of good governance for Barbados.

The Softcore Anti Topical Issues – which are always anti DLP prosecuted by Colonel Buggy which DO NOT CARRY ANY DEFAMATION, LIBEL OR DEROGATORY STATEMENT but remains to the left of that line in every one of his submissions, irregardless (credit Jeff C) of the issue.

    And den de ole man’s.

    Our audiences are completely different.

Suzanne’s are for those who take time, to examine her nuances, subliminal messages and to see the Utopia? that she is aiming for – an “enobled” Mottley who rises above her Troika.

The Colonel, because of who he is, seeks to draw the viewers attention to the topical issues and juxtaposes them with such brevity that, whether complexioned by comedy or seriousness, will appeal to a particular audience

Dat is not de ole man’s objective nor my audience.

I am not into the subliminal.

    My Message is very clear.

    Here be the disgusting issue.

Here is the cause of that disgusting issue

Here is the Single Solution to that disgusting cause of that disgusting issue

Vote All of the DLP to Ef Out!!

    It is a repetitive message.

I am “appealing to raw emotion David AND IF TRUNK (that is what a Jamaican Woman is calling him) had employed that strategy and focus on the financial indiscretions of Hillary juxtaposed against his financial and economic acumen read solutions, even it they were “airy fairy”, he would not have lost!!

    Tell me David.

When the final days of the General Election roll around and you see a flier that speaks to (i) the ideal of what barbados should be (ii) softcore juxtaposition of issues WITHOUT ANY ACTION STATEMENT and (iii) Vote the DLP TO EFF OUT which one you beleive going resonate with the fickle Bajan populace??

You is a man who dun know the other strategies that I am using other than the templates

    Tell me.

You tink that dey are going to be useful in the final battle gainst the grantleys??

    Understood my dear man!

  44. Love all of this! Thank you so much for sharing honestly! It’s true that I think “love” & “bond” are different. Love can be automatic whereas a bond requires a bit more effort. Super interesting!baby gate reviews
