Submitted David  Comissiong, President, People’s  Empowerment  Party
Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite
Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite

According to Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, not only is he not to be blamed for our country’s violent crime problem, but he knows who or what is to blame, and he is letting us all know that the roots of Barbados’ violent crime problem are located in dysfunctional communities and in a deficient education system.

Well, if Brathwaite was possessed of this invaluable knowledge back in 2008 when his Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration took overs the reins of government, and he — the Government’s chief legal officer — has done little or nothing over the past 8 years to address these root causes of the problem, he should be called upon to resign from office!

Alternatively, if— after more than 8 years in office — Brathwaite has only now become aware of the root causes of the crime problem, that too would be a compelling reason for his resignation or termination!

However you look at it, Brathwaite has failed in his duty, and is proving to be a useless Attorney General!

Way back in January 2008, when Brathwaite was begging the people of Barbados to elect him to office and to give him responsibility for dealing with the country’s problems, the Peoples Empowerment Party (PEP) published a Manifesto in which we identified dysfunctional communities and a deficient education system as root causes of crime and other social ills.

The PEP 2008 Manifesto stated as follows:-

“Saving Barbados From Crime”:

. The existing deep pockets of unemployment in various communities will be tackled! We do not want a society in which people drift into drug trafficking and crime because of unemployment, poverty and hopelessness. Every community that exhibits this vulnerability will be the target of a governmental intervention programme that offers counselling, jobs and work/study programmes to the unemployed residents.

. A National Consultation On Crime will be staged as a matter of urgency under the auspices of the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF). The “National Consultation” will consist of a series of community based “groundings” involving senior officers of the RBPF and the people of Barbados. Not only will it produce new ideas and insights on fighting crime, but it will also go some way towards developing enhanced levels of confidence and trust in the Police.

.Various studies have shown that there is a direct link between violent video games and movies and the commission of crimes of violence. Video games based on mind-bending violence will be banned from Barbados, and a much stricter censorship policy will be applied  to movies and DVDs featuring graphic violence.

. In recognition of the fact that at least one half of convicted offenders are afflicted with drug or alcohol addiction problems , Government will construct a major drug and  alcohol rehabilitation facility, and will provide the law courts with a small team of psychologists who will be available to interview, examine and treat offenders and proffer advise and recommendations to Magistrates.

Free And High Quality Education For All

. The system of dumping all the low academic achievers in 5 or 6 Secondary Schools at the bottom of the ladder and all the high academic achievers in 5 or 6 Secondary Schools at the top of the ladder must be scrapped! We will sit down with the professional educators and their organizations and work out a more just, sensible and constructive system.

. We will ensure that weaker students who need greater assistance get it, in the form of smaller classes, more individual attention and access to remedial education teachers and programmes.

. A comprehensive trade-centred adult education and skills training programme for all young adults who did not receive proper education and training in the School System will also be established, building on the foundations laid by the Skills Training Programme and the Polytechnic.

. Government will make a sacred and binding commitment to the maintenance of free University education for the young people of Barbados.”

  1. Calm down, David C. Being a politician is about popularity in the rum shop and church, not about a clean CV or the common good, which never made it into the Caribbean.

    The dummy Adriel Nitwit, government ministers and others need educating to the fact that mothers do not get children by themselves, men are also responsible for the raising of THEIR sons and daughters….contrary to what all these jackasses believe, females are not just there to breed and populate the island, then left with the responsibility to singlehandedly support, raise, guide and educate children ALL ON THEIR OWN.

    Everytime one of the senators, government ministers, priests or reverends open their backward, ignorant mouths on this subject, it shows their blatant stupidity.

    Stop with the overt sexism and deal with the reality….yall rub shoulders with the criminals who import the guns, drugs, launder the money and traffick in humans at ya events and cocktail parties, ya smile in their faces and admire their wealth knowing full well that they are responsible for much of the crime wave on the island, without their background funding, there would not be so much crime.

    So instead of blaming single mothers….call the authorities and give them the names of your bribers, friends and business partners who fund the drug and gun running imports.

    well at least you have an alternative . But i hope you know it costs and barbadians not so friendly to having people digging into their pockets

    A program of that magnitude would cost billions of dollars of investment and having plans that could create jobs and not talking about minimum wage jobs ,the element that is involved in guns and trafficking is there for the financial bonus , so do not think that after investing in this type of anti social element and preparing them for civility that the end would be a big thank for a minimum wage paying job
    This element which has taken over the once quiet island has big plans for themselves and it is not going to be good enough after investing in programs that would give them progression for a meaningful life to expect that crime would simply decrease , This element has a fast forward way of thinking and as usual when spelled out the bottom line is a big dollar.
    take the USA they spend not billions but trillions of dollars in all kinds of social programs to uplift many living in the inner cities but most prefer to sell or deal in drugs and the answer when asked they say that the money they earn working in eight to five jobs not enough to feed their families ,the same mentality permeates from many in barbados who CHOOSE to deal in drugs and violence

    BTW…politicians are well known for telling lies and making false promises to win an election…just like this current party will do again for 2018, just to sit on their lazy asses in the people’s parliament to do nothing or fix nothing again for anither 5-10 year….while blaming everyone else for their incompetence and inadequacies.

    I am sure vote buying will be the order of the day…..voters beware.

    ACs….stop lying you cannot compare the US with 1/4 billion people and over 50 states…..riddled with social problems, the bigger the country, the bigger the social problems. ……. with Barbados 14×21….166 square miles with a population of 275,000 people…and the lazy, incompetent government ministers are clueless to solve the problems of unemployment and crime, the deficit, water woes….white collar criminals and their scams…etc, etc.

    Exactly what are the government ministers good for. ..deflecting blame and responsibility. …is not a skill, it’s cowardice.

    So you, the asinine consortium (ac) of deceitful lying pricks, think that Comissiong promises to the youth are just overly expensive pipe dreams?

    Well, what would you call the Constituency councils if not expensively superfluous layers of parasitic feeders on the now emaciated calf? Weren’t these political bottom feeders set up to do the very thing you are accusing Comissiong of falsely purveying to the same idealistic youth?

    Here is what your dear loving party of people in its 2013 manifesto promised the youth of the very same communities riddled with drugs, crime, unemployment, poverty and hopelessness:

    “YOUTH, SPORT AND CULTURE:
    YOUTH
    The Government has listened carefully to the dreams and aspirations of our young people and after intensive dialogue and consultation, has secured the approval of Barbados’ first National Youth Policy through all stages – the youth themselves who assisted with its preparation, the Cabinet and Parliament. Implementation of this far-reaching Policy has already started and will be continued over the next five years to accelerate the development of our youth.

    THE NEW DLP ADMINISTRATION WILL:
    Create employment opportunities for youth through entrepreneurship and other empowerment strategies;
    Develop Youth Innovation Centres;
    Establish a Youth Development Board;
    Launch immediately a Youth in Agriculture programme to offer commercial opportunities in livestock farming, food crop production and horticulture;
    Establishment of a voluntary National Youth Service Programme;
    Provide greater access to youth to the services of the Barbados Youth Service (BYS), through a staged decentralisation of the BYS, commencing with a pilot project.

    SPORTS DEVELOPMENT:
    The importance of sports cannot be overstated. Sports can be the basis on which an individual or community can engage in healthy living, thus reducing the risk of chronic disease. Sports also provide avenues for the channelling of youthful energy. Participation in sports develops discipline, self-esteem and self-confidence and sharpens social skills. Beyond building character, sporting activity may lead to many career possibilities. A new Democratic Labour Party Administration will:
    Bla, bla, bla, bla ad nauseam.

The sad thing is that I do not think he has to do too much to convince himself. Blame the mothers and the teachers, who are mostly women. Women folk, think on these things. A lot of men are latent ****** and hate women and it usually starts at home.

  9. The sooner this lot leaves Parliament the sooner it will be for the people to begin undo all that they have done. In 8 short years the country appears to be back in the 1950’s.

  10. Shit man the comparison is dealing with Money large sums of money to be acquired to treat the root causes of crime and violence in poor cities through social programs Not stating that the USA is in comparison to the population of barbados therefore the money spent in the USA would be equivalent to that of barbados spending ,, but on the scale of efficiency, maintenance and sustainability for a small island with limited budget and resources fighting violence at its root cause geared towards prevention and implementing social programs as a cure then it is not far fetch to say that the country the size of barbados and having limited resources the country would have to source millions of dollars to do so and the question is who would foot the bill
    Furthermore the PEP is on record stating that taxes would be abolish if they become govt which in itself is problematic to having such a broad based plan towards a goal to fighting crime

    This is the time for ALL females to show their strengths, since they have become the scape goat for every wrong that the ministers are responsible for, yet expect females to be the breeding cows so that government can have a ready grown population….without giving financial input, or upgrade the education system or create programs to accomodate children with different skills.

    Ya getting blamed anyway, come out in your numbers and vote this government out, get blamed for something positive…make the government ministers cry, they do not care about you or your children, their only intent is to live large off your sweat, arrest your children, sell you out for their own self-serving motives and cover their asses by blaming you when everything goes wrong because of their incompetence and corruption…..while they continue to protect the real criminals.

    Show them that you are their bosses….and you pay their salaries….when employees start blaming their bosses for their own mistakes…the boss fires those uppity employees.

  18. @ millertheannunaki September 12, 2016 at 6:34 PM #

    Surely Barbadians should recall that the DLP published for the 2008 general elections, a manifesto entitled: “Youth Manifesto 2008: ‘A pledge to the Youth of Barbados,’” which was DEDICATED SPECIFICALLY to the youth.

    Highlighted in yellow on page 2 of this manifesto, is a message from then leader of the DLP, David Thompson, which perhaps served to reinforce the DEMS’ were serious about fulfilling their promises to the youth:

    “This Manifesto is therefore a CONTRACT between this great Party and the young people of Barbados. It is the means whereby we INTEND reclaiming and empowering you to craft our fate.”

    The manifesto also stated:

    “Under the new DLP Government you, the young people would be fully recognized as nation builders. Where there has been EXCLUSION there will be INCLUSION. Where there has been MARGINALIZATION there will be EMPOWERMENT. Where there has been DESPAIR there will be HOPE.”

    “This is our promise to you…and we intend to begin delivering from 16th January. Your future is too important to be left to other voters. Vote DLP on 15th January 2008 for a Better Barbados.”

    As you know, Miller, 8 years and 9 months after making those promises, Barbadian youth CONTINUE to EXPERIENCE “exclusion,” “marginalization” and “despair.” Additionally, there is not any evidence to suggest the youth have been “empowered to craft our fate.”

    DEMS (lied) now!!!!

  19. @ millertheannunaki September 12, 2016 at 6:34 PM #

    Also, Miller, interestingly, on pages 6 & 7 of the Youth Manifesto, under the heading: “BETTER OPPORTUNTIES IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING,” the DEMS outlined how they intended to revamp Barbados’ educational system:

    “…….. within the first 100 days of assuming office the DLP administration will convene a National Consultation on Education and Training with a view to finalizing the COMPREHENSIVE PLAN it has been working on for the PAST FIVE YEARS.”

    It is important to note the DEMS mentioned a “COMPREHENSIVE PLAN they had been WORKING on for the PAST 5 YEARS.” If we placed this comment in its proper perspective, since the 2008 was in January 2008, the DLP had to be formulating this plan prior to 2007. But let’s assume, for argument’s sake, they were working on this “plan” since 2002.

    Recall Clyde Mascoll led the DLP into the May 21, 2003 general elections, in which the party won 7 seats. Hence, Mascoll, David Thompson, Denis Kellman, David Estwick, Richard Sealy, Ronald Jones and Michael Lashley occupied the Opposition benches.

    In 2005, certain senior members of the DLP wanted to “systematically” replace Mascoll as leader of the party with Thompson. However, during a press release, Estwick described this act as “dubious and illegal” [Source: Daily Nation, November 9, 2005] and did not participate in this venture, citing such actions goes against the DLP’s rules and regulations.

    Also recall Kellman’s reason for being unable to attend parliamentary group meetings was “the venue was too far.”

    With Kellman doing his own thing and Estwick not joining the “coup,” left Jones, Sealy, Lashley to successfully bring a no confidence motion against Mascoll, this paving the way for Thompson.

    Miller, with the turmoil and infighting occurring in the DLP between 2003 and 2006, especially where there were obvious personality clashes, could not have created an environment CONDUCIVE for the opposition consulting together to formulate any “comprehensive plan” on education.

    DEMS (lied) again!!!

  31. That Adriel Brathwaite could be the chief law enforcement officer in Barbados always sat uncomfortably.

    This is a man not known for having an agile mind.

    Indeed, his tenure has been characterized by many failures of justice.

    Any one of these would have been enough for most other AGs to be dismissed, but not this highly competent idiot.

    We used to think that people like Maurice King were average people, mentally. However, Brathwaite has made them look like big brain people.

    And since he has not been, and could not be, the legal luminary, that he should be. We proposed that that useless head/brain be dispensed with.

  32. Adriel Bratwaithe is all the things and names given to him by some poster here, and yes he should resigned or be fired. However, he has given us Barbadian men an opening to have a discussion on the role our women are playing in our sons’ lives as it relates to their deviant and anti social behavior. While some are quick to point out that the children had to have a father and so on to be born and other such rubbish, one can’t help but noticed how bajan black women are selecting their children’s fathers, in a manner similar to how WICBC pick their cricket team…dumb stupid ass players. Many of us will well remembered from somewhere in the late ’70s the mothers took over the raising of their sons when although the fathers were around, willing and able. This was at a time when women started earning more than men and in many instances they were also empowering themselves with a higher education. This was also very obvious in the USA, women who previously couldn’t even get a job at Kirpilani now were enjoying some employment and financial success. It was at this time I saw women setting their sons against their fathers for any number of reasons, totally oblivious that the sons were turning out to be pussies and all sorts of idiots so long as the schmucks liked them more than daddy.
    I’ve watched and listened to women go on about about how prisons are big businesses
    while turning a blind eye to their son’s deviant behavior, women coddled and pampered their sons as the fathers are ready to mop the floor with their sons ass in an attempt to get him to do right. No Barbadian man would ever allow his sons to muck about in the house nor on the block and still feed or sheltered the punk . No Barbadian matured man would ever allow his son to walk into his house with his pants sagging to the extent that he can look up his ass, the same goes for the son not going to school, learning a trade or working at some job.
