A senior official of Preconco Ltd., a Mark Maloney-managed company, today voiced fears that hundreds of workers could lose their jobs and millions of dollars in investment could leave Barbados if the Town & Country Planning Department does not give the go-ahead for a number of projects submitted by  Maloney’s group of companies – Barbados TODAY dated 14 June, 2016

Pray tell me, Mr. Smith, do I detect a veiled threat coming from you if Mr. Maloney doesn’t get his way whenever and however he wants it?

Are you insinuating that there will be a surge in crime if any of Mr. Maloney’s workers are laid off?

Hasn’t Government laid off more than 3,000 workers?

Have we seen a spike in crime since then?

Are you saying that Mr. Maloney should be allowed to carry on as he has been – with total disregard for the laws of this country?

What if every businessman who heads a company/group of companies did the same as Mr. Maloney?

Then chaos would reign in Barbados – and we don’t want that – or do we?

You sound like a chip off your  boss, and both of you must learn that the laws are to be adhered to, and not to be broken if and when it pleases you and Mr. Maloney. Others have had their places demolished although they were nothing but extensions to their houses and didn’t take up much space. Shall we make the poor, the needy and the vulnerable suffer, and allow the rich and the famous to do as they like?

I don’t think so!

I didn’t hear you mention the roundabout at Coverley, nor the gas station there which your boss should have removed eons ago. Is that right of your boss – to ignore what Town & Country Planning told him?

What if other companies with a similar number of employees did the same, Mr. Smith?

Suppose any other wanted to erect some building, but didn’t get planning permission for so doing?

Are you trying to tell me and the other taxpayers of this country that he should nevertheless do so?

I guess that company would have to have over 1,000 employees also!

How much leeway should this Government or any future ones give companies with 1,000 employees or more?

Should this be done across the board, or will it only obtain for a certain category of employer with 1,000 or more employees?

Was there a spike in crime when Intel packed up and left?

I don’t remember that happening.

Also this nonsense of someone trying to equate the Bussa Statue with such a hut is preposterous, and whoever made that statement doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Go back to your history books, and you will see the difference.

We cannot allow the lower echelons of this country to be targeted whenever they do wrong, whereas the upper ones get away scot-free.

It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.” – George Washington

Where are the investments going to go…Maloney is a well known crook and liar, no one wants him in their countries…only Barbados and corrupt politicians will have him.

What do ya expect his dumb employees to say, if they say differently he will fire them, he is a known fraud…and the employees are too foolish to know any better.

I am told that not one of the 75 or so employees of Preconco were told why they we mandated to turn up that morning in question. That is a PR stunt and the staff were used and abused in typical bajan style.

So Mark Maloney breaks the laws in the country that feeds him, gives him taxpayer funded contracts so he can make millions of dollars in illgotten gains….since the work and buildings are fly by night, he has no respect for the majority on the island, he shows disrespect and disdain for the leaders because they refuse to put him in his place….and he actually thinks some other country wants him or his investors around, the parasites that they all are…I say good riddance, let him and them be parasites to some other country, see how will their nasty corruption and bibery will be accepted in these time.

He and them can go to some other country and act like they own the government and people…I suggest Trinidad or Jamaica for him…he won’t last longer than a day or 2 in North America or Europe.

So Skylar, if true; why did the staff not walk away? Nothing but bloody poppets!

  5. Now we do have Maloney’s Lawyers claiming that they have prior permission to continue with their construction. Everyone except Maloney I perceive is aware of where he is storing his cement on Spring Garden next to the flower establishment and in very close proximity to our Coast Guard headquarters and looking into our main Harbor. I am wondering who gave the permission. I am also not understanding clearly what his Lawyers are shoving down our throats. Can we assume that the Magistrates and Judges are going to entertain their logic. Let’s all wait until the “High Court” makes a decision in Maloney’s favor. I always thought that when these matters came before the Courts that all construction pertaining to the projects ceases until a resolution is arrived at. Mark Maloney is slapping, kicking and otherwise disrespecting the laws of this country. Why is Bjerkham featuring so prominently in all of this? Let’s not forget that he is one of the directors of our not so up-front Central Bank and as such, has the privilege to be calling most of the shots from his position, and as I see it, that becomes a very serious conflict of interest.
The quietness of the politicians are hurting the ears. Please guys we know where Inniss stand on this issue. What about the others except Sinckler who is lining Maloney’s pockets with out tax dollars.

  6. @ Skylar, that is difficult to believe. I only saw hard back me in the video not 5 year olds.

  7. What has puzzled me is the lead employee said that Maloney employs 1000 people yet in the news excerpt this week with Jada and the union, Jada only employs 400 people.

    Passing strange, eh?

  8. @Prodigal Son

In 2008 when the DLP took office M-Maloney and his companies didn’t employ 200 people and he drove a suzuki and rented a house in Newton at 2,000.00/month. But after 8 years of recession and the DLP…………….. his companies have 1,000 employees and he is a construction magnate?

DON’T MAKE ME LAUGH, I BEG YOU.

  11. THE HOYOS FILE: Between a rock and a hard place
    PAT HOYOS,
    Added 25 June 2016

IT MAY HAVE SEEMED like a deal made in Heaven, but unfortunately for the private sector side of this particular PPP relationship, it was apparently not cast in concrete.

Now, the company may be feeling that the only thing stuck in the grip of hard-as-rock cement are its corporate legs, as it is slowly being tipped off the boat into deep water.
I am talking of course about the group of companies operated by intrepid entrepreneur Mark Maloney, whose exploits on the local business scene in recent years may even have outshone his deeds of derring-do as a competitive driver at Bushy Park circuit.
For a long time, Maloney seemed to be the Dolittle administration’s “golden boy”, or at least one of them, and the companies he operates and owns in full or in part have been at the forefront of its private-public sector initiatives.

But, due to Opposition Leader Mia Mottley, who, in the course of several speeches in the House of Assembly – including the last couple of Budget replies and her tour de force performance in the recent no-confidence debate – laid charges of sweetheart deals and flouting of Town and Country Planning requirements by some Maloney-controlled enterprises, the public’s perception may have changed.
So perhaps it was Mottley’s pressure that has led in recent months to what appears to be the Government’s decision to distance itself as far as possible from those companies, and perhaps Maloney himself.
The bell may have been rung on the final round by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart. When asked at his presser about the impasse between the Town and Country Planning Department (TCPD) order for Maloney to tear down a building under construction at Spring Garden to store Rock Hard Cement and the entrepreneur’s refusal to do so, Stuart sounded like Moses coming down the mountain with the ten commandments of his administration. They read, from one to ten: Thou shalt obey the law.
The PM’s pronouncements on where his administration stood on companies flouting Town and Country Planning regulations were so rock hard that he himself had to pause and then say legalistic words to the effect, that, of course, he was not singling out any company, and so on.
But the word went out, and if he were not emboldened before, Chief Town Planner Mark Cummins ordered the tearing down of a small shed at a roundabout at Lears that had been ordered removed five years ago. Five years ago.
It was what the old sea captains called the shot across the bow.
Maloney has also been told by the TCPD to remove several houses which are too close to the gas station at Coverley, itself another controversial project built in the honeymoon days of the Maloney-Dolittle “marriage”. Not to mention the alleged problem with the way the exit from Coverley onto the ABC highway was constructed.
Mark Maloney’s reaction to these Government actions has been that he is a victim and it is Cummins who is acting unfairly toward him and who should resign. He allegedly said this when claiming in the press that he had a right to put up the Rock Hard building near the flour mill on certain legal grounds. So the town planner has taken him to court.
Last week, as his suggestion of a resignation by the chief town planner did not seem to be gaining much traction with the powers-that-be on Bay Street, what with Cummins still going to work every day, Maloney staged a demo.
He trooped out a hundred or so Preconco workers, said to be part of his 1 000-strong workforce, and let it be known that if the permissions he has submitted for various projects were not granted by the Government departments soon, a lot of those workers would have to be laid off.
It seemed to me like brinkmanship. To be sure, private sector organisations almost always issue those kinds of warnings if they feel hard done by due to some government policy, or lack thereof, and only recently we had a version of this from the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry, whose president, Eddie Abed, said that unless something drastic was done for Bridgetown and Speightstown, like making them duty-free centres, they would essentially wither away into commercial irrelevance.
But Abed and the other Bridgetown merchants did not ask any of their employees to show up on Broad Street to press home the point. It would have been unthinkable. But Maloney did think about it, showing up with about 100 workers from one of his companies, Preconco, at a media conference to spotlight their cause of victimisation.
But you can always tell when people are in the grip of a company culture that sees its own narrative as dominant over even the country’s history, because it often leads them to say the most tone-deaf things without batting an eyelid.
One such instance occurred at that same demonstration when one Preconco employee said that if the town planner could take down Mark’s shed at the Lears Roundabout, why hadn’t he taken down Bussa’s statue at Haggatt Hall, since that also impeded the sight of motorists?
Talk about not only missing the point, but telling off publicly the very people you need to give you your permissions to do stuff. It matters not whether Bussa is blocking our view (which he is not). How do you equate a statue of Bussa, one of this country’s heroes, with a Maloney shed? But no matter how many more bridges (to use a construction metaphor) Maloney may have burned with such public pouting, he has a friend in the minister of contrariness.
Last week, Minister of Commerce Donville Inniss was quoted as saying that the role of the state was not to frustrate but to facilitate. Mr Minister, how about the role of the state being to regulate?
As this saga continues, I wonder: Where did it all start to unravel? What happened to that sweetheart relationship between the Maloney group of companies and the Government that seems now to have soured, leaving Maloney and his group of companies between a rock and a hard place?

  12. In our little islands there is always the danger of allowing individuals to loom larger than life off the backs of taxpayers driven by corrupt practices. Stanford comes to mind in Antigua. The advent of social media has given ordinary citizens the opportunity to share views/spout concerns, whistleblow to pressure officials to be honest in their dealings. Let us continue to perform our civic duty, for the sake of our children at least.

  13. Well Well & Consequences Avatar
    Well Well & Consequences

The ministers are traitors, they are pretending to distance themselves from Maloney only because there is a looming election and they need to continue deceiving the majority blacks on the island to be reelected to continue their bribetaking, money laundering and corruption schemes with Bizzy, Maloney and Bjerkham. ., effectively depriving the people and future generations of the majority population of any high standard of living, of owning houses or land or creating and sustaining, maintaining successful businesses, that’s what the politicians take bribes to do, that’s what they have always taken bribes from the minorities to do.. They need to be reelected to facilitate the theft of billions more dollars from the treasury and central bank, so now they play those games.

Maloney could have been reined in 7 years ago, it was well known that his business practices are fraudulent, questionable and he is disrespectful to people on the island, I knew this over a decade ago, all the politicians from both political parties knows this and they still colluded with him and the other minority crooks against the people who elected them, over the decades.

All of the ministers from Fruendel down needs throwing out of the people’s parliament, they have giddily presided over the continued disenfranchisement of 260,000 of the black population for 8 years…yes, black men and women did that, the leaders…… and fell proud to do so.

Donville Inniss, who is lusting to become prime minister, should be bodily thrown out of parliament for his nastiness to his own people…he is a true traitor.

There must be some honest civil servants left who can shed further light on the DLP’s financial involvement with Mark Maloney.

  15. Well Well & Consequences Avatar
    Well Well & Consequences

SSS. ..makes great sense, but in doing so they should shed lightband all thr contrscts and financial involvement of both political parties with the minority criminals and I use that word becsuse crikinality by all the ministers and business people involved in stealing from the treasury, should override the secrets act that shackles civil servants from divulging information.

Ya see….the island has a constitution and that constitution consists of legislation that bars government ministers from criminal activities against taxpayers, but for over 3 decades the politicians have refused to enforce any legislation that would infringe on their crimial activities.

And that’s what the minorities have taken advantage of to enrich themselves. …aided by wicked, greedy politicians and government ministers.

Maloney appears to be a rather tall guy. If I were a politician, I too would keep damn quiet about Maloney’s shenanigans. Falling from that back pocket of his, where he keeps the government, could be a nasty fall for any minister,….. acquired post 2008 blubber, or not.

Colonel…if you mean in height…Maloney is not tall at all…met him a couple times. If you mean how much nastiness and dirt he has on all the ministers, yes he is tall indeed because they are all small and weak, so their fall will be long and hard…..as they deserve…they are traitors to their own people.tainted, damaged goods.

  20. The reality is that any changes to property on any coast of Barbados even the subdivision, or a mere transfer of title even, application must not only be made to Town Planning but permission must FIRST be sought from The Prime Ministers Office. In addition to this, it must go to The Ministry of Housing and Lands, and the Coastal Zone Management must give an assessment before anything can be done. This process takes years.

  21. Furthermore, the fact that this cement plant has been built mere feet away from ADM Mills. and close proximity to residential areas and a restaurant The Ministry of Health and that of of The Environment should be involved.

The Coast Guard has already been complaining of upper respiratory illnesses from the inhalation of the cement dust and so have the residents in the general area.

Some may ask so what’s the big deal? Well, cement is made from limestone, shells, chalk and marl combined with shale, clay, blast furnace slag, silica sand, aluminum and iron ore. After being heated in a kiln to some 2,700 degrees clinker is formed . It is cooled, ground and mixed with gypsum and limestone after which it is pulverized so fine that ONE POUND CONTAINS 150 billion PARTICLES. (www.cement.org)

There are serious health hazards associated with cement dust. It causes lung function impairment, chronic obstruction lung disease, restrictive lung disease, pneumoconiosis carcinoma of the lungs, stomach and colon.

Other studies have shown that cement dust may enter into your circulatory system and thereby reach all the organs of the body including the heart, liver, spleen, bones and muscles. (www.nbm.nih.gov/pubmed/1812389)

This dust will affect the marine ecology of the west coast, certainly at Brandon’s and Brighton.

So does anybody think that there WILL NOT be cross contamination with the wheat stored by ADM Mills – especially since the plan is to store bulk cement in silos(preparation is apparently already in progress for this eventuality) which will be placed adjacent to those that store the wheat?
