AquaponicsWith a decade of experience in Aquaponic(AP) farming I am very happy to see AP systems now being created all over the island. The benefit of producing vegetables using fish manure rather than land animal’s or chemical fertilizers are many but the most attractive is the fact that your irrigation and fertilization is done automatically. Raising fish is virtually labour less In AP because as soon as the fish create waste in the water stream, it is pumped to a filter and broken down then quickly distributed to the plants where it is used as fertilizer. When compared to the physical labour, time and space involved to cleaning pens, pilling up manure until it has broken down then applying that to the soil it is easy to see why more people are interested in the instant results of AP systems.

Perhaps the biggest driving force of AP is timing, many in Barbados with vision will see in the near future domestic food production is the only way to be safe and secure. Along with the fact that we can now source cheap plastic and pumps that cost less than a fridge to run, interest is currently at an all time high and we at Baird’s Village Farms have worked hard to remove as many barriers to AP farming in Barbados as we can.

Without a doubt the science behind AP system design and the actual building of a system requires that the individual be intelligent, a handy person and also have the time and tools to dedicate towards the project. Also location specific information is not easily available to those who have not heard about us as yet. So we have designed a “ready done” AP system and in the process made it cheaper than if you were to put together a similar sized system.

For now AP is still new to Barbados and we need you to get the information out there to the people that matter. Please watch and share the slideshow and also give us some feed back in the comment section below as this is what makes us better and encourages us to keep going.

    VERY EXCITING
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
    DO YOU SELL STARTER UNITS?

  2. Aquaponics is definitely a good way of achieving sustainable living..especially for urban and sub-urban homes.

However, I don’t get the feeling that the movement is getting through to people at an adequate pace.

CBC aired an Aljazeera produced documentary on sustainable living in Barbados which was produced in 2015 right after the West Indies dismal performance against AUS. I was really impressed but disappointed that it took a full year for me to learn of its existence.

Those in the AP business need to work with TV producers to get their message on CBC to further the AP movement and generate business.

The program was televised on other occasions. It was a well put together program by the team and Damian represented well. What was very pleasing is the way the community is involved in the project. Those who supply the fish for example. We need the MoA to support these kinds of ventures. Instead we have hundreds of acres running wild with river tamarind.

Didn’t someone plant acres of river tamarind to be used for the cahill project? What is the status of those fields? Are they overrun by termites yet?

We could also make use of the useless constituency councils to push AP.

  5. To those who have defended by saying the Cahill Energy project cost Barbados nothing, ask them.

The river tamarind was planted not for Cahill but the proposed new multipurpose sugar factory.

The proposal was to grow King Grass for the Cahill monster.

And where is the Minister of Health? This place should be closed until the MOH gives it a clean bill of health, similar to what Donville Inniss had done to Mrs Ram. As it stands, like the Maloney’s molasses fiasco, this company and others will most likely be given a 30- day Cease and Desist order, and to rid themselves of incriminating evidence. We should swooped down on this company, in the same fashion that we have storm- trooped the vendors around Fairchild St bus stand.
Everyday something is happening in Barbados ,which is propelling us closer and closer to Haiti. What ever happened to our quest to become a First World nation? Have we been knocked of six? or No Balls-ed

  10. @colon buggy why should my farm be closed? you always bad talking me and bring no evidence to back your claims i only respond to you because others may read what you type and believe it. I will give you yet another chance to highlight what is wrong with my farm so i can correct you and calm your fears.. but just saying stuff like that and slandering people’s name for no reason really highlights the type of person you are.

My name is damian hinkson the farm is at #24baird’s village st. george.
I dont know anything about Colon buggy or her motives. I hope if you (the reader) reads this anonymous person comments you dont believe them without proof. I have many youtube videos of my farm and operations. Colon bug just has random accusations and nothing specific which leads me to believe this is something personal.

10 years later i am still here.

  14. Aquaponics is not new. The MOA years ago provided Tilapia at its Station in Mangrove, and if you go at UWI cave hill you will still see some of the fibreglass tanks that were used in Aquaponics experiments. A number of acres have been provided at Graeme Hall for the ponds to grow Tilapia and Aquaponics . Check David

READY DONE HAS CLEARLY OBVIOUSLY IMPROVED HIS TECHNOLOGY HIS HE FIRST ATTEMPTED TO SHARE HIS IDEAS HERE ABOUT SIX YEARS OR SO

    HE IS TO BE COMMENDED
TILAPIA HAVE LIVED IN THE SEVERAL PONDS AND WATER WAYS AT GRAHME HALL SINCE I KNEW THE PLACE IN THE LATE 50’S WHEN WE TRAVERSED THE BANKING RD TO GO TO SCHOOL OR TO THE POST OFFICE

THROUGHOUT THE YEARS FOLK HAVE TAKEN YOUNG TILAPIA TO RAISE THEM IN OLD REFRIGERATOR BODIES

  16. @ Alvin Cummins, Aquaculture and Aquaponics are two slightly different forms of farming. Aquaculture is farming only fish, the down side is that you have to dump the water weekly. Aquaponics takes that water and grow plants with it. When the plants are finished the clean water goes back to the fish. So aquaponics is much more earth frendly. As far as I know the aquaponic system that has started to be built at Graeme hall is NOT acres but from the looks of it only 1/4 acre with a similar design to the one I built in 2007. This is the first attempt at Aquponics by the MOA that I know of. The biggest Aquaponics system in the Caribbean was at natures produce.

Having tilapia in a pond vs. Aquaponic system is like catching yard fowl vs a state of the art chicken run. Don’t confuse the two! Most of the work done in modern Aquaponics was done in the late 80″s by the UNIVERSITY of the vergin island.

Google the history of Aquaponics to get a idea of how new it is.
