The following note was circulated relevant players by Andrew Simpson who is a citizen advocate on environmental matters. Good to see we have Barbadians who care enough about the environment to do something about it.

Even if landfill space was freely available, the SSA fleet was ‘up to task’ of garbage collections across the island, the fertility of our soils allowed for a high degree of food security, there was no un-employment and foreign exchange reserves were not an issue and there was no threat to groundwater and nearshore reefs from imported chemical fertilizers, it would still be a shame for this ‘green waste’ to be wasted.

GOB/SSA please consider engaging private haulers and recyclers to separately collect organic/ biodegradable ‘waste’, at least until SSA is better equipped, so it can be shredded, composted and delivered as a soil amendment product. SBRC has the equipment and is already being paid to process this feedstock.

Coconut branches can be chopped for use as mulch or converted to biochar, inoculated with ‘otherwise difficult to dispose of’ chicken waste and sargassum as an ingredient.

Most yard waste is already put out separately in most cases. What a shame for it to be mixed with refuse; taking up critical space in SSA trucks, and expensive landfill space.

Sorted materials should not be subject to a tipping fee. Remediation of soils is desperately needed for Barbados agricultural industry to prosper in the future.

Let’s not ‘wait and see’. Please contact me for more information on how this “Miracle Mix” can contribute to more sustainable waste management practice.

A good post,to which I will add that some of it can also be used in the making of animal feed e.g. coconut waste products.

  6. Of late we have heard the newly elected government of Jamaica making noises about using waste to energy to attack their waste problem. No doubt they would have taken notes of Cahill and they have a contractor general over there.

Someone sent me photos last of the Lewis Hamilton dinner and it was well represented by local frauds, one photo saw Darcy Boyce, the one some on here call “quisling”…at a table whizzy, whizzing with none other that Bizzy Williams and trying to make himself look invisible.

We are left to wonder what new scam the weary taxpayers willl now have to pay for to enrich Cow and Bizzy, compliments if corrupt politicians. . The photos were through Whapaxx, difficult to copy and post..

The SBRC contract is a deal between the Government of Barbados and Bizzy Williams. It has nothing to whatsoever with Barbadians or how much of tax payers money is footing the bill for this arrangement.

  10. . . . it’d be good if we could start separating wasteful talk . . .

The SBRC contract is one borne from thiefing from taxpayers, separating taxpayers from their money…bottomline. As Alvin said, Kellman warned Owen Arthur about signing on to the contract yet, over a decade later, the present government does the same thing, just gives away taxpayer’s money….and not a sound bite from Kellman.

    Definitions?
    Examples of wasteful talk please?
Could your 7:45 be an example because it is not explicit enough?

Presumably the above is said tongue in cheek as we all know that govts act on behalf of the people with the taxes and loans they receive….they are answerable to the poppuli and manage on a renewable contract.

Exactly so the government of Barbados is acting on behalf of the people. So the people can rest assure that the government they select acting in their best interest thus no need to provide any details relative to the SBRC and Government contract.

  15. The idea of a SBRC is good. The issue is always in the lack of transparency and the fit to a national waste strategy, separating waste at source etc.

I understand the Prime Minister is on record saying recently that he will not tolerate corruption in Barbados, if any one has proof of corruption, take it to the DPP, but is that not the same dude they say is corrupt too, anyway, the Prime Minister continues to say that ya will not hear his name being called in corruption…and he ain’t protecting a fella. I dont think Mrs,. Stuart birthed any fool…lol.

Does he know about the SBRC scam that does not benefit taxpayers, maybe someone needs to take SBRCs first agreement signed under BLP and the recent one signed under DLP to him….it gets better, Fruendel looks like he is about to throw everybody under the bus cause Panama Leaks will very soon leak down..lol

Apparently Fruendel dont know it yet, but as Prime Minister and with accusations of corrupt government officials spiraling through cyberspace for everyone around the world to see…it’s his job to initiate investigations, start criminal investigations.

As Prime Minister, it’s within his job description to launch investigations on the awarding of contracts to Cow, Bizzy and all the usual suspects, the insurace frsud at CGI….I dont think it’s the job of the taxpayers to find documents, how will they doso and take them to the DPP who is also accused of being corrupt.

Fruendel has access to all the documents as prime minister, is an attorney….and can read.

By the way, did no one send Fruendel a copy of the Cahill scam contract…that he signed.

  19. We have pockets of Barbados successfully separating waste/garbage at source. It can be and should be encouraged to reduce waste at source going to the landfill. The flipside is that government and SBRC have signed an agreement to guarantee the amount of waste delivered to the landfill – tipping fee included – therefore any strategy to reduce waste does not align with the current plan.

There is currently a deal approved for SBRC and Waster to Energy to take centre stage in the sanitation issues of Barbados, David. 3Rs is simply the rest of the populations unilateral pipe dream too outdated to be of any effectivity in the new scheme of things.

“The U.S. Embassy to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS informs U.S. citizens that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a travel notice for Saint Barthélemy regarding the Zika virus. The CDC has concluded that the Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects in some fetuses and babies born to infected mothers. This conclusion was based on increasing evidence from a number of recently published studies and a careful evaluation using established scientific criteria. Zika may also be linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can affect individuals of any age or sex. Zika virus is typically a mosquito-borne illness, but there have been confirmed cases of transmission through sexual contact and blood transfusion. CDC reports that travel to elevations higher than 2,000 m (6,500 ft) above sea level is considered to have minimal likelihood for mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission, even within countries reporting active transmission. CDC recommends that women who are pregnant should not travel to areas that are at elevations less than 2,000 m above sea level in countries with ongoing Zika virus transmission. For general information about Zika, please visit the CDC website.”

Successive governments have failed to adequately support recycling initiatives. In 2000 their response was that if the private sector are doing it, why should government get involved. There has been, until recently, no economic mechanism to encourage separation at source.
The tipping fee has proven effective in diverting waste but under the SBRC contract but there is no cost saving to taxpayers. More effective partnership is needed and Household waste also has to be brought into the net. Everyone must be responsible for their outgoings if our Nation is to be saved from a foundational collapse.
