One has to marvel at the lack of due diligence Caribbean governments and others in authority exercise when making decisions on behalf of the people they serve. There is the perception by the developed world that we are a bunch of banana republics, yet we continue by our decision-making to give truth to the belief.

Baroness Scotland of Asthal was elected the 6th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth and recently took office on April 1, 2016. She is the first woman to hold the post. She was nominated by Dominica where she was born and emigrated to the UK when she was two years old. Her nomination was a contentious one with Antigua nominating the home based Sir Ronald Sanders. It is interesting to recall that the Barbados government supported the Baroness Scotland nomination.

A recent media report links Baroness Scotland to two unsavoury characters :-

However, Scotland’s high-flying career has, in recent years, seen her build often lucrative relationships with two of the world’s ugliest dictatorships, the Daily Mail reported. One is the notorious government of Kazakhstan, whose repressive dictator, 75-year-old Nursultan Nazarbayev, has been accused of torturing and even killing political opponents, stifling press freedom, and profiteering from the country’s vast oil and gas reserves.

The other is the despotic regime of Abdulla Yameen, the dictator of the Maldives, whose associates seized power in a 2012 coup and have since prosecuted more than 1,700 opposition activists while imprisoning the leaders of three opposition parties.ump to your country or territory of interest – Caribbean News – British newspaper links Dominica baroness to ‘vile despots’

  1. Looka Bushie’s crosses though!!!
A bushman SUPPORTS a balanced view, …incurring serious licks from the boss man in the process – only for balance to now turn around and throw a big rock at the whacker…

    However, it missed….

The two statements are not mutually exclusive Mr balance. Taking ‘heat’ from some sections of the press and having a newspaper like the Daily Mail digging for dirt are two completely separate things.

Can you imagine the line that CAN be taken , for example, with some research into the Queen and her family’s association with slavery …and the stolen spoils therefrom?
..or her ‘links’ to the dark era when the British left India; messed up Africa; and set up the Middle East for decades of mayhem and death…?

Come on balance… you need bigger weapons than that little rock against the whacker… 🙂

Bushman…how quickly all forget that Elizabeth Windsor is a beneficary of the slave trade, the worldwides thefts of countries, resources and a gaggle of dumb black people who refuse to acknowledge that all she does is continue for the past 50+ yearst o maintain the facade that keeps them unable to claim their rightful place.

What did Bob Marley say about brainwash education again…

But wait, 50 years fr8m now, her replacements will be running the same scam and black people will be talking the same rubbish and will still have the nerve to talk about change and reparations. I am sure there will be a replacement David Cameron also telling them to shut up, while still living off the proceeds of the slave trade.

    And so shall it be!
So-called educated black people are ‘perpetually’ infatuated and continuously bemused by their white masters their culture and their ‘created’ white god.

Take, for example, your constant references to the bribing of corrupt politicians and their lackeys with the award of monarchical “Pimp Titles”.
The most recent example of the hollowness of such pimp titles can be seen with the scandal surrounding the previous owner of the fallen retail conglomerate British Home Stores (Bhs).
You can bet such similar ‘debasing’ of the title of “Sir” will soon take place when numerous such ‘brassy’ medals will be given to pimps for the ruling administration commemorating 50 Years of “brass bowlery” (a term coined from the Bush “T” cussing mint).

You can bet your last devalued Bajan dollar that the likes of Godhorse Gollop would be top of the list despite his altruistically huge bill he would be submitting for national service rendered in the ‘drafting’ of the new Constitution for the Republic of Barbados.

But don’t be surprised if Lord Fumble does the unprecedented and award himself the title of Sir Lord Fumble, Black Knight Commander of the Order of Marchfield & Molasses Hill.
He could just be the first PM in a ‘British’ Commonwealth country to achieve such a feat while in office.
He certainly wouldn’t want to look like a bloody fool accepting a Knighthood on demitting office after Barbados becomes a republic in 2017.

Make hay (or should that be grow sugarcane?) while the Monarchical sun shines on you, Lord Fumble!

From reading Dr Williams book. it does not seem that there was nothing ignominious about the policy of slavery in those days. It was par for the course even up to this day in several jurisdictions. some slaves defended their masters and mistresses to the death.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The above statement of fact is a must read for all those who wish to look at slavery within the context of todays society.

When one considers that it is still happening despite the universal denouncement of it by todays society says a lot about us as a people.

  8. LOL @ balance
Well there you go…. Vincent agrees with you….
Need Bushie tell you of the need to flush…?

So when exactly did Eric William’s book become the Bible?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    You ungrateful ‘so and so’….
While others gain notoriety from expanding the damn Queen’s English with such shiite words as LOL, ROTFL, etc, you seek to denigrate the bushman who have introduced such useful, natural and greatly required terms as “brass bowlery”, ‘albino-centricity’ (note that this is another AC), and ‘Whacking’…

How the hell else can one properly describe the situation in Barbados…?
Could you not nominate the Bushman for one of the 50th anniversary awards instead…?

Eric Williams came from a family who owned slaves, if i remember correctly their name was French sounding, with Williams being a product of the era who believed the reference to slavery in the bible meant it was ok and the church being complicit for centuries in the slave trade, Williams’ stance comes as no surprise, in fact, if he was alive today, he would be surprised that the church, who benefited from the slave trade are now rolling back their hypocritical stance.

  13. Commonwealth head may have bought job in ‘utterly corrupt process’

    Baroness Patricia Scotland of Asthal

    By Caribbean News Now contributor

LONDON, England — In a second article in two weeks, a British newspaper has accused the new Commonwealth secretary general, Dominica-born Baroness Patricia Scotland, of unethical conduct.

According to the latest article by The Mail on Sunday, under the headline Baroness Brazen bought top Commonwealth job in ‘utterly corrupt process’, Scotland is accused of buying her position by giving bogus ‘knighthoods’ to five Caribbean leaders.

Last week, accusing Scotland of cronyism, the newspaper reported that she had become entangled in what it described as an extraordinary row over abuse of a knighthood conferred by the governor general of Antigua and Barbuda on her “dear friend” and “crony” Anthony Bailey.

Ironically, Scotland has made fighting corruption one of the focuses of her term of office as secretary general.

Now, the former British attorney general is accused of trying to win support from Commonwealth heads of government with offers of honours and charitable donations from an obscure Catholic order of which she was a prominent member.

Those honoured included the prime minister and president of Dominica, who later officially nominated Scotland as their country’s candidate for the top Commonwealth post, despite the fact she has not lived there since she was two years old.

Conservative Party MP James Cleverly led calls for a full investigation into the allegations against Scotland, whose political post is second only to the Queen in the Commonwealth hierarchy.

“The Commonwealth is a vitally important and respected institution and we can’t allow it to be dragged into any kind of scandal. There must be the fullest possible inquiry,” Cleverly said.

Scotland reportedly had a major disagreement with Secretariat officials when she took up the post of secretary general because they were treating her as domiciled and resident in the UK resident (which she is) for tax purposes and, as such, she would have to pay tax on her £160,000 (US$232,000)-a-year salary that would also take account of the monetary benefit of her £14 million (US$20 million) official residence in Mayfair, London’s most prestigious address.

According to Commonwealth sources, Scotland apparently insisted that her contract with the Secretariat should treat her as an "overseas appointment” to avoid paying UK taxes on her salary and benefits.

The leader of the opposition in Dominica, Lennox Linton, described Baroness Scotland as “opportunistic, deceitful and disgraceful”.

  14. The Baroness was the better by far of the two Caribbean candidates. Be careful of the source of this information. It is in the interest of some people to denigrate black people, and in the interest of others to prove that the Secretariat made a mistake.
