We seem to be lurching from one issue or crisis to another. Whether it is garbage pilling up all over de place or teachers being assaulted by students, our beloved island state now seem rudderless and heading straight for the rocks. When we add an ill conceived, basically stupid, so called no confidence motion, apparently designed to get the Prime Minister to talk; a picture of utter confusion seems to have permanently infected the body politic.

The only person who seems to have a fairly level head these days is Mr. Grenville Phillips, whose recent appearance on the rapidly deteriorating brass tacks program was intelligent and enlightening. It was a departure from almost five years of one particular moderator, who has taken it upon himself to be the main antagonist of the Prime Minister. Repetitive and one-sided contributions, designed to futilely prove that there is some real difference of what we have, the DLP, and what we gine get, the BLP, unless apparently a miracle intervenes.

Mr. Phillips has undertaken the bold task of convincing the public that Mr. Owen Arthur is as much to blame as anybody else for the economic slide that is now taking us into financial ruin and possibly oblivion. Any Minister of Finance, who left the country with perhaps all the problems he had inherited, should not be elevated to God like status. Arthur has been given a lot of credit where none was due. There are shop keepers and those who only keep shop. The only real difference between Sinckler and Arthur might be the fact that Arthur can claim he is an economist by training. They are selling the same bread in different bread carts, the result will be the same. Drowning men will clutch at a straw; Mr. Arthur is the straw of choice at this moment.

The simple truth is that as we approach fifty years of nationhood, our country finds its infrastructure in danger of becoming shambled. These two parties should be praised for what they have done and we should not be afraid to remind them that things they should have done they left undone and things they should not have done they brazenly did. Two glaring examples should suffice: Who will invest over one hundred million in a cricket stadium to see the West Indies get beat and leave old mains in the ground leaking water? That will be our friends at Roebuck street. Who will invest nearly fifty million in an office building and leave old water mains in the ground? That will be our friends at George Street. Same difference.

So in steps Mr. Phillips with his Solutions for Barbados and like all third parties, he finds himself often coming up for oxygen. Very hard to hold ones breath because of the polluted waters that are the trade mark of the BLP and DLP. Only problem is that he honestly believes that only those who have successfully managed business for a period of time and have employed a certain number of people, should get the opportunity to run the country. He may be shocked to know that over the last fifty years or so we have had quite a number of such persons in parliament and look wuh happen.

My advice to Mr. Phillips is to exclude lawyers and economists and try everybody else, except Sinckler!

  1. Name Changes. I recall when the Bay Land was renamed Bayville to get away from the negativity associated with the title, Land, Tenantry, N-Y, etc etc. Later the Pine Housing Area needed a name change, and what did they settle for,…..Pine-Lands .

  2. lady your are comparing countries that are technological efficient to a barbados who is yet to show proficiency in its upward climb towards the full use of technology

It’s not brain surgery AC…that’s elementary stuff decades old, like the old IBM computers, we are not talking encryption or decoding and encoding, I know that’s way to advanced for most of the islands.

    We are talking elementary stuff.

  4. Miller,
I have visited Amsterdam. Walked along the canals and looked in the “show windows”. Nice merchandise. I am sure you went there. Did you “buy” anything?

  5. Miller,
Trudeau also campaigned on the promise to run Budget deficits for about three years, and not spend as much time on balancing the budget. We seem to have a fixation on a balanced budget. Trudeau won by a large margin. The Canadian people understood what he was talking about and accepted it. As I said earlier, a government can’t be run like a dry goods store, or a lumber company. A government has different responsibilities, than the bottom line. Note where Argentina was.The boogy man of devaluation because there is a deficit, hoping people would panic no longer scares.

  6. Yesterday the Minister of Finance regaled us lesser mortals of the real meaning of the collection and refunding of income and corporation taxes and the fact that we the un-informed citizens do not understand the difficulties associated with the handling of these transactions. What the minister himself do not seem to understand is that the 170 million dollars of refunds is a massive interest free loan and of tremendous short term benefit to the government’s cash flow.It is stupid therefore to try to explain the phenomenon in any way other than its benefit to the treasury.Another example of the idiocy which democracy throws our way.

    What a City, Amsterdam!

  8. Colonel Buggy,
Yes. Pork chops at the Five Flies were succulent, and large. We cannot and should not try to emulate it though. Not even the merchandise in the show windows, the manner of displays, or the chance of “sampling”.

    Oh, ye god of hypocrisy!
If you were not influenced or did not sample any of the goods on show (whether the mary-jane variety or the bevy of feminine pulchritude from across the globe why do you think others would be?
Who are you to determine what people should do?

Did you see any ‘paro-like’ drug addicts roaming the streets and begging as you see daily in Bridgetown and all around Bim?
Did you see any Bush Hill type night parade?
Did you see the streets, pavements and gutters filled with litter?

I bet you saw thousands and thousands from around the world thronging the streets, alleys cruising on the many canals and patronizing the bars, restaurants and “coffee” shops.
I bet you saw a big old church (did it remind you of the Bridgetown Church Village of your boyhood days?) right slap in the middle of the arcade of show windows at which you not only lingered and stared but were so enthralled you were forced to leave a few Euros in the Dutch economy as a show of penitence for your misleading statements made on BU over the last 2 years. Remember Cahill and the Sugar Point Cruise ship terminal?

Unlike you, my friend, I only make bold claims based on verifiable evidence and information which can be validated. My most recent visit to that openly honest and economically thriving city has reinforced my view that Barbados needs to come up with an alternative economic model to its fast becoming third world basket case.

The Dutch gave Barbados its start in the sugarcane business for Bim to go on to become a world player and a shining jewel in the British economic crown.
Why not let the wheel come full circle and take a lesson out of the book of residents of the banks of the Amstel?
Why not start with Nelson Street and its environs (your hometown and old stomping ground) and turn the area into a genuine World Heritage site and by turning it into a mini-Amsterdam become the Fun & Entertainment capital of the Caribbean?
Christian Hypocrisy is no longer tradable on the world market.

Miller…they like being hypocrites too much to stop now.

  11. One thing that I had noticed in Amsterdam in those far out days, was seeing blacks from the Netherlands Antilles running their own businesses in the city, while blacks from the British West Indies we fortunate to ply a business in London from a barrow or a stall in Brixton market.

  13. And once again , on CBC evening news we are treated to the Prime Minister preaching politics in one of those new age churches, and to add insult to injury, the goodly pastor, sorry, Bishop, not to be left out, side shifted praises to the Lord Jesus, to sing the praises of the Democratic Labour Party, even assuring them that God is with them, while “dissing” the Opposition.
And we wonder why this country is going through the many Plagues?

If Bushie was a betting man, money would be wagered that the minister in question is related to Alvin Cummins….
Gotta be…their’s is a unique kind of idiocy…

No doubt Stinkliar will also be writing a book when he retires on his lavish pension …. probably entitled…

    Well said, Gabriel!
As Mr. Bush Tea would put it: Only a bunch of Bajan brassbowls would swallow that tripe from the lying MoF. As the older Bajans used to say: ‘Education ain’t Commonsense’.

That liar tries to convey the impression that he, Stinkliar, is doing the taxpayers a huge favour by returning their own money they were forced to overpay in the first instance.

Mr Stinkliar, it is the people’s money (they should not have paid over in the first place) and NOT welfare handouts from your DLP administration.

You should be thanking profusely the same overtaxed citizens for giving your administration easy unsecured loans to ease your cash-flow crisis and save your sorry ass from bond default.

The question to you, King Liar, is if you are going to pay them interest as required under the Income Tax Act or are you going to gouge out their financial eyes of those blind enough to fall for your political sleight-of-hand?

As a born&1/2bred Nederlander from the Antilles,I can vouch that the yolk of apartheid that is part and parcel of the culture of Bim never existed in my birth place which allowed them/us to never doubt that we were as good as anybody else and achieve whatever we wanted…….what an eye opener it was when I arrived in Bim and over the decades it has not improved with the yolk of apartheid firmly implanted in the psyche of all Bimmers to its detriment.

In Barbados Today 25 Apr pg 17,I must commend Grenvill Phillips 11,for being objective and not allowing himself to be sucked in by the empty rethoric of Beckles, who one assumes, believes that Bim can be saved by creating martyred heroes like Bussa as opposed to highlighting the life and times of real people like Bourne,Rangel, etc and how they contributed to the development of Bim irregardless of their slave ownership, which if you read Michael Rudder on the same page gives first hand insight into the facts of slavery.
