NUPW Strike
NUPW Strike

The NUPW – representing public sector workers – is expected to play an important role in the civil society of Barbados. This is a heightened expectation given the current state of affairs. It is therefore important that it represents itself as a professional outfit, there is simply too much at stake.

The disagreement which surfaced this week between the General Secretary of the NUPW Roslyn Smith and the President Akanni McDowall does not bode well for a well managed industrial climate if we are to believe the two represent a significant section of NUPW’s leadership.

Here is the letter Roslyn Smith is purported to have written without the approval of President McDowall or the National Council. BU notes the letterhead bears the names of former president Walter Maloney and Dennis Clarke. It should be a matter of priority for the McDowall and Smith to quickly resolve this matter because we fear those who stand to benefit will take advantage to the disadvantage of the workers.

    David;

    Practically everything reflects or is a reflection of politics. Think about ministerial responsibilities. Don’t they encompass every aspect of life?

    Remove politics and there would be no discussion on BU.

    Nickel Head;

    Why was it necessary to roll out the shame brathwaite game? Who resorted to and fashioned it? Why does it appear that the Nation was tricked into reporting yesterday’s story? What is the true connection between Dr Brathwaite and the agreement? Who is ultimately responsible for the agreement? Isn’t it the leader of the Government side? The MoL? Why is she apparently being shielded?

    The shame brathwaite game has all the trademarks of someone who always resorts to asymetric warfare. I wonder who that might be?

  3. This has nothing to do with the BWA/BWU union matter, that is just the camouflage needed to oust Atleigh Brathwaite and get Estwick on the back foot. This has to do with the fact that BWA is about to secure two desalination plants and has secured BDS$80MILLION from the CDB for infrastructure improvements at BWA.
    Donville and Chris, with the blessing of the PM have teamed up together because of mutual interest, Donville is the promoter in chief of Bizzy Williams and Chris is the promoter and chief of Mark Maloney. Bizzy wants the desalination plants for Ionics and Mark wants the contract to build $80 Million dollars in reservoirs and tanks across Barbados for the BWA.

    Then we need to make it public, send BU the details.

    @Are-we-there-yet

    Yes there is politics everywhere but it does not have to be always partisan.

  5. David

    Only two companies in Barbados supplier water to the BWA and its customers, Ionics (Spring Garden, St.Michael) and Potable Water Supply (Groves, St. Philip), both of which are majority owned by Bizzy Williams.

  6. Bizzy Williams with the assistance of member of the Cabinet will not allow the Minister responsible for BWA to make a decision on desalination plants unless and until Bizzy is certain that he will get those too (or two).

    I keep says in Barbados we like out monopolies and Bizzy will not allow anyone to stand in his way as he continues down the road of monopolising the private supply business in Barbados.

  7. Names being mentioned to replace the present chairman of the BWA are:- (1) Hal Gollop, (2) Steve Gollop, or (3) Kennedy Swarotsingh

    Who is Steve Gollop and what is his claim to fame?
    Who is Kennedy Swarotsingh and what is his claim to fame? The surname sounds Trinidadian. Is it?

    I googled Kennedy Swaratsingh and found a number of articles. The most comprehensive one was this.

  10. Steve Gollop’s claim to fame is that he is Hal Gollop’s son.
    Hal, of course, was the lawyer for the BWA who let Innotech write their own contract for the new BWA building. In the process, BWA paid Innotech $5 million as an upfront payment they were not entitled to. They also got paid for duty and VAT which they got waivers on, so this money should not have been charged to BWA.

  11. Wuh even if these DLP jokers could find competent people to appoint to these posts…. who the hell would want to subject themselves and their integrity to these morons?
    …no wonder Gollop is the only option for every shiite…
    Bushie is still wondering about Jeff with the FTC…. just waiting to see how this solar energy arrangement will be handled….. 🙂

  12. So who heads this private company, working for the BWA, cannot recall its initials, which I have seen digging large holes in the road all over Christ Church?

    No wonder that the word on the street is that the MOF has alleged to have stated , he should be $50 Million better off by the time he demits office. Perhaps we should ask Dale Marshall if this is US or Bajan dollarbills.

    who digging large holes in the road in ch. ch. for the bwa? What is it them digging the holes for? who or what them looking for, dead bodies?

  15. The NUPW and Customs dont endorse the concept of a stable progressive Barbados based on improvement in the economy of the four pillars of tourism, off shore business, manufacturing and agriculture. The stance of the NUPW and Customs are at odds with the rest of the society. Customs last year cost the economy $22 million in one of their repeat go slows. Go slows for the Customs deptartment at the airport is the old normal. Its pathetic the work ethos of Customs. A change manager reckons their attitude is among the world’s worst for border controllers. The NUPW casts around for the flimsiest excuse to strike and bring the country to a halt. Productivity is meaningless to the NUPW. Who can be tasked to get reason into the heads of those two destructive bodies . Can society call on Caswell oops forgot he’s the Customs godfather, what of the bush shitter , miller, ac, ding ding, King Dyall or Kapesskalers.

    Checked it out today. Its called WMC- Water Management ,Caribbean. There are holes dug and cordoned off at the following locations. Henry Forde Roundabout, at the top of Newton, one at Gall Hill/ Montrose on the relatively newly paved road, and another in Gall Hill near the Aberdeen Jones Centre.

    never hear bout them. they drilling for water? who they working for and how much they charging?

  18. Small Dwarf March 31, 2016 at 1:42 PM #
    Those are $5 million dollar questions.

  19. I lost. how do we find on what them doing, for who and for how much?

  20. @ Colonel Buggy
    …are they not preparing to drill horizontal tunnels (from large hole to large hole) to install new water mains…?
    Believe this technology is designed to avoid extensive trenching in areas where there are lots of underground infrastructure already in place…

  21. Heard today firemen at GAIA went on strike? Redman also promised strike action at the start of the next school term if environmental issues at a few schools is not fixed and fees to teachers for marking SBA projects are not paid.

    As far as I can see, the firm INFRA , is undertaking this horizontal drilling (old technology) in Bridgetown. The stretch of road between Montrose and Gall Hill, part of the ”Ronald Jones Highway”,which was upgraded a few years ago, had all of its underground utilities upgraded as well. Perhaps ,like Roebuck Street the incorrect fittings were installed initially.

  23. @Colonel Buggy

    BU understands the BWA did not have the correct fittings but made a decision to allow the trenches to be filled to allow traffic to resume.

    Infra = Jada = Bjerkhamn
    Infra trucks are on site at the (ex?) Harlequin H-hotel site next to KFC on the south coast as well. What is that about?
