Is the launch of a direct nonstop service between Los Angeles on the US Pacific coast and Barbados an impossible dream?

Personally I do not think so. Los Angeles to Barbados is 3,931 miles (Great Circle) or 3,416 nautical miles,

[…]

so around eight flying hours. Compare that with Los Angeles to Hawaii which is 2,562 miles (Great Circle) or 2,226 nautical miles.

jetBlue currently operate three aircraft types which includes the Airbus A321 and some versions of this plane have a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles, which in a two class configuration would allow them to offer their coveted MINT lay flat beds in one section, generating greater overall seat revenue.

Again rather like Boston, we are looking at a massive population reach with an estimated 18.5 million residents in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan region. Of course, it is not just about the numbers. Demographics are critical to the equation in terms of possible success. In our favour, Californians are seasoned travellers and commonly fly long distances as a matter of course on vacation.

To make it a more attractive proposition, we should work with neighbouring islands and explore all cruise and stay possibilities. A one week land accommodation stay followed by another week at sea.

The introduction of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood airport service from next April will help grow arrival numbers in the interim with improved connection times linking the East and West coasts, so it’s not that we have to wait to increase our marketing and building Barbados awareness in California.

And within a week of announcing the Fort Lauderdale route, seats went on sale from an introductory US$99 one way fare, which demonstrates the carrier is not sitting back and waiting for things to happen.

Last week I was privileged to greet the direct nonstop Thomas Cook flight from Glasgow and it was a real treat to see that the plane was full with around 325 passengers. The aircraft took just an incredible eight hours to reach us and opens up Scotland as an even more viable market.

A concentration of efforts by all those involved in tourism is needed if we are going to persuade the carrier to keep the flight operating past January 2016 and we must support the people on the ground in the UK, by any practical way possible.

During the remaining part of this month The Barbados House in conjunction with the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC), Barrhead Travel and Thomas Cook have mounted a display of Barbadian products and tourism related options to grow visibility and ensure as many people are aware of this new route.

Barrhead is the largest independent travel agency in Scotland with 15 branches and one of the top ten in the entire UK, recording an annual turnover exceeding GBPounds 100 million.

Sincere thanks to all involved who have donated travel and accommodation prizes and partners in the re-DISCOVER initiative who have given dinners, notably Tapas, Jumas and Ocean 2 to drive attendance.

Those initial 300 plus visitors on the first flight will hopefully become great ambassadors for Barbados when they return to endure the remainder of the long Scottish winter, by telling friends and work colleagues of their holiday experience.

  1. Even on a slow day in paradise, like last Sunday, Oistins provides entertainment enough to leave our visitors goggle eyed, and no doubt wanting to come back for more.

And what do the tourists and visitors see and experience when they get here? Here is what some got to experience last night (Sunday) in Oistins.

I was in Oistins with two visitors from overseas for some grilled fish. While all the cooking stalls were not open and the place obviously wasn’t as busy as it would be on a typical Friday or Saturday night, I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few touristy looking faces among the patrons at our stall even though the tourist season had not yet started. However, after placing our order and while waiting for our food with a cold Banks in hand we were treated to the sights and sounds of a very unkempt looking (and quite likely mentally disturbed) vagrant who after aggressively and physically pushing aside a waitress was shouting abuse and Bajan cuss words of the grossest kind (repetitively including one that referred to a particular part of the female anatomy) at the top of his voice to the staff of the stall who had asked him to move on and to stop troubling their clients.

This performance went on for about 5 to 10 minutes after which he wandered off into the darkness outside, much to everyone’s relief, while muttering loudly but unintelligibly to himself. Such relief was short lived as he reappeared again only a few minutes later for an encore performance of the above, before finally leaving us patrons of “fine dining” Oistins style in peace, but only after forcing us to suffer through another free but unwanted 5 minute lesson in the use, application and delivery of everyday Bajan cuss words.

Needless to say there was absolutely no sign of any security far less a police around while this impromptu Bajan style street theater event was taking centre stage. I wonder what memories Mr. Sealy thinks these visitors will take away from their Oistin’s experience last Sunday night? Oh well, at least they can regale their friends and relatives back home with tales of the colorful characters one can meet and enjoy in Oistins while you are learning how to swear and cuss like a Bajan Paro.

  2. That was the same thing that happened at dover during cropover ,there is a fine line between the bajan experience and a night ruined. This is what keeps people in all inclusives . How is the seaweed at oistins

  3. @Lawson,
Saw the same thing last week just off Yonge Street, near Dundas.
People looked and looked off. People from the big cities are quite accustomed to the druggies, drunks, mentally deranged and the homeless behaving in this and other equally disturbing (to us) behaviour. How do you stop a homeless from peeing on the sidewalk opposite city hall, against the walls of Four Seasons Hotel, at one o-clock in the afternoon (Lunch time for office workers). Die he use any of Bushier’s expletives?

  4. By the way,
I was pleased to see hoardings at a couple of Barclay’sPremier League games, inviting people to visit Barbados. Good way to reach large groups even outside of England.

  5. Alvin I do not believe there are homeless in Canada, unless they want to be. most of them usually go south for the winter anyways thank god for the cold I knew a cop who used to drop the winos they caught at night off in trudeaus rockliffe area and make them walk to get back downtown ,by that time they were sober. He got into big trouble because the rich feel they shouldn’t have to put up with vagrants pissing on their lawns. But its okay to piss on our places. That is really one good thing about Ottawa because we have people from all over the world visiting and we want to put on our best face so we keep the panhandlers etc in check

  7. Barbados is one of the 10Best USA Today 2015 Awardees

Barbados is just racking up points online as a great tourism destination this week.
The island has captured spots in the Top 10 on five lists generated by 10Best and USA TODAY.
In the 10Best USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards – Travel category, Barbados placed seventh (7th) on the Best Caribbean Destination for Shopping; sixth (6th) on the Best Caribbean Destination for Food; sixth (6th) on the Best Caribbean Destination for Golf; eighth (8th) on the Best Caribbean Destination for Nightlife and; tenth (10th) on the Best Caribbean Destination for Adventure lists.
Barbados, along with the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, placed in the Top 10 on all five lists mentioned.

What say you about the story “More tourist attractions needed in Barbados”

    http://www.barbadosadvocate.com/newsitem.asp?more=local&NewsID=46706

It quotes Dr. Keith Nurse, Senior Fellow of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus as saying:

“I used to come to Barbados a lot when I was younger. What used to happen in (St. Lawrence) Gap, was four or five times better than it is now. You used to be able to get a live band in the Gap, on any weekend. You go to the Gap now and if you find a live band, you’re lucky.”

When DD was in Barbados for nine months a little over 10 years ago, he spent most Saturday nights with Square One at the Ship Inn – loved The Plumber song. When I visited the St. Lawrence Gap on a Saturday a year ago, you could shoot a cannon down the Gap and not hit anything, and the Ship Inn gone.

  9. Agree with the Dr.a plausible observation.one that is necessary to keep barbados on top of its game in the tourism market
All knows that their is firece competition in and outside the carrribbean market
Barbados would be foolishly arrogant to be dissmisive of the Dr. most welcomed observation

  10. OMG

Did ac or Alvin write this piece of spin for Jesper Ince

Loan demonstrates island going in right direction

    http://www.barbadosadvocate.com/newsitem.asp?more=local&NewsID=46704

    11/20/2015

“The US $170 million loan sourced from the China Import/Export Bank to reconstruct Sam Lord’s Castle and its concessionary 2.5 percent fixed interest rate proves that this island is going in the right direction in dealing with the economic recession…………….”

That no investor could be found to buy the property from Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. and fund and develop the property as private sector investment, demonstrates that private investors do not believe that this island is going in the right direction in dealing with the economic recession.

The Harlequin and Pure Beach Ponzi schemes could not find investors for their projects. Now the Barbados taxpayers are the investors the Sam Lord’s ……. scheme.

  11. There are two alternatives 1. Do dilligence on behalf of the people by investing on a prime piece of bajanism with a return of value on the investment by differing channels namely jobs and Fx.2. Allow the property to crumbled to the ground.
    You decide

So what should happen to the Four Seasons rusting bucket project?
Shouldn’t a similar approach be taken to this project which has been cursed by the disturbed spirits of the Arawaks?
How come Stinkliar cannot secure a viable project for his constituency other than gun and dope dealing? Must this Four Seasons fiasco be a millstone around his lying neck? Why not get some Middle Eastern millionaires to finance the project in return for sale of citizenship by investment?

What about the Performing Arts Centre at Brandons promised since 2012 to be grant-funded by the Chinese at no cost to the Bajan taxpayers?
What about the Exmouth Housing project that should have started since December 2013? Isn’t it time to complete such a project now that cement is being offloaded next door at rock-hard prices?

  13. But miller why you always gloating about the negative, The posibilty that the Four Seasons would once again become a lively and live able place is more real than MIA become PM in your lifetime
So sit back relax there will be a time for four season to emerge but govt is not going to do another acrobatic high wire performance to satisfy a group of negative BLP complainers.
This type of investment have many loose ends to be tied together and pleasing all involved takes lots of money and convincing .
The govt therefore must be wise when moving forward with plans that would be of benefit to the taxpayers of Barbados including the all encompassing word “incentives” when put to tabled before investors must be fully mapped to incorporate expectations for this country as well. Bro it is not like going down town broad street and bargaining with the coconut vendor, The stakes are high and sometimes legalities because of the differing partners can delay progress
Now that the Tourism market has rebounded world wide there is a higher degree of possibility that not far in the distant the project would be restarted and that of course would be another blow to Mia ego

  14. Imagine the mitigated gall of the BLP presentation in Parliament arguing (for) but against the tidy sum of 170 million which the govt, had ear marked and seking resolution for the Sam lords Castle project
I was very intriguing to hear Santia Bradshaw talking on behalf of the BLP yardfowls interjecting tourism numbers and trying to build an against argument for the Resolution based on Tourist spend.

“This type of investment have many loose ends to be tied together and pleasing all involved takes lots of money and convincing .”

Are you making out the Minister of Finance to be a liar, then? Here is what he said:

“Additional it is our hope that, following the sale of the Four Seasons Project to a preferred international investor, work on that site will finally begin, during the course of next year. Requests for proposals to this effect have already been posted in local and international media and 35 proposals are already streaming in. We expect a selection to be made during October 2013.”

  16. @ millertheanunnaki,

You are a mature enough observer to see that political expediency is more important……. to a lot of politicians…… than absolute truth.

  17. @ Miller Indeed not, ‘ the fiance minister started his comment with the following words
“additional it is our hope” stop here and reread with clear understand
From what i interpret of the finance minister language the going ahead of the project would be determined based on specific conditions before restarting
The lie would be if you knew factual that all the conditions were met and the minister renege.
You cannot call a person a liar by taking a supposition and turning it into a confirmation of non commitments by various party

So you, the pretending legal eagle of the ac consortium, are now an expert on interpretation of other person’s language and what a minister intended to say or didn’t say?
So the minister in question is no longer a pathological liar but simply handicapped when trying to express himself.

According to you, not even one of the 35 bidders was able to meet the “specific conditions” required to sell ‘as it stands’ the rusting abandonment even the Chinese refuse to entertain for a song.
Hence the delay from October 2013 in getting rid of the millstone around the NIS neck.
Sounds like the excuse given for the inability of the Minister of Housing to have the houses built over the last 7 years fully occupied in a land of housing shortages.

Be that as it may, let us not call the minister handicapped with his use of language but merely constrained in clearly expressing himself as he usually seeks to twist the truth while planting a plantation of lies in his fertile imagination.
Now, would you consider the following promise to build a Performing Arts Centre with free Chinese money right in the heart of his constituency a figment of his twisted imagination or merely a misunderstanding of the meaning of “could become a reality in Barbados in the very near future” or “further details on that too will be revealed shortly”?
But yet again a congenital mentally-defective liar who cannot tell difference between 0.3, 0.03, 0.003 and 0.7, 0.07 and 0.007 will be unable to differentiate between the “very near future”, “shortly” since August 2011 and the ‘Twelfth of Never’.

“Finally on a recent State visit to China the Honourable Prime Minister in his very fruitful deliberations with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao engaged the continued interest of Barbados in developing a dedicated home for the performing arts in Barbados. The government of China equally expressed its desire to see that such a facility could become a reality in Barbados in the very near future.
To this end, it would be remiss of me to let pass this opportunity to inform the country that following months of analysis and consultation, this government has decided to move ahead with the construction of a brand new multi-purpose state of the art Cultural and Performing Arts Centre.
It is expected that the Centre will be financed and constructed through a grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China and it is proposed that it will be located, once the Town Planner approves, on the land at Spring Garden opposite the Brandon’s Beach facility in the constituency of St. Michael North West. Further details on that too will be revealed shortly.”

  20. Miller you like to twist words being the wordsmith that you are you always lose sight of the content in your haste to introduced political garble to make a point.
Any how your lyrical sound bites of “what about” makes me laugh.

As far as the eye could see. Yesterday. Petra Griffith Roach Cheryl Carter Peter Mayers Joy-Anne Casandra Crichlow and their teams are charged with the legwork of making the plans a reality. Six years of declines, some shuffling around on deck and here we are. And we have not started yet. I tip my hat to you, the members of what I call Team Barbados. Some of you are not up yet. We had 2 am bedtimes this morning after shuffling between events and bumper crowds at Barbados Food & Wine and Rum Festival. And we push on.

  22. Mark Draghorn the owner of Juma’a has been arrested for gun crime in Barbados. He also has various fraud issues in the U.K. where he ran away from owing a lot of people a lot of money. It’s safe to say that Daghorn is very much a WANTED man in the U.K. which leads me to ask; Is this really the person/company/association that you want to associate with RE discovering Barbados?

Search google there’s so much to read about him.
