Freundel Stuart can insult leader of our party, Mia Mottley, in keeping with his signal feature to show he is in charge, all he likes. That will shed no light on the questions on the Cahill controversy […], which just keep mounting.
DLP members, the few of them who feel they must follow their woeful leader and still have the gall to speak on this matter, can attack BLP members all they wish, the questions on Cahill, from governance to acquiring land, will not be answered that way.
At this stage, when the Cahill deal begs for a comprehensive statement of fact from the DLP, the Government continues to deny Barbadians the answers they deserve, instead indulging in contradictions, spin and now even threats to people exposing this by-the-night deal.
The inescapable fact is that the Cahill deal stinks and the more the DLP fights to camouflage the smell, the more rank it is becoming. There is simply no way to cover down what from every angle, on available information, amounts to the gravest misconduct by a Barbados Government and the biggest rape of our country of sellout to unproven foreign interests.
Even the hidebound Stuart, Chris Sinckler and the DLP, must know that Cahill is not some tax that can be sneaked in, or some concessions that can be given away by stealth. Too much of it is physical and cannot be hidden. The potential to sink Barbados too great. The DLP must tell the public the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
It is now almost two years since Chris Sinckler announced a deal with Cahill, “signed by four Ministries”, and that “nothing gives me greater pleasure than to say this.” That great pleasure has not included, to this day, an explanation, a detailed statement on just what is involved in the Cahill deal.
The DLP is notorious for insulting Barbadians by refusing to disclose to the public information on projects, whether it be Cost U Less or Sandals – only for the facts to reveal excessive and unfair favouritism to the detriment of competing interests and Barbados.
But the Cahill matter is apart by itself. The BLP, which first brought the matter to light, is to be continuously ignored, as the several organizations in Barbados, which have called for clarity, and the hundreds of individuals who in all forums have expressed outrage at the sellout for a potage of mess, the conduct of the DLP in the matter and voiced concern about everything from the untried technology for a plant of the size proposed to the possible health and environmental dangers.
Not a word by the DLP except for self-condemning tit-bits about a deal not being done yet and vain attempts to support what, from its shell company origins to its clearly inept CEO Clare Cowan, is somewhat of a ghost deal in which there is a deal but no deal, no money but investors and for which the people of Barbados have to bear every single bill and input into a project that binds us for as much as 60 years.
This week was the perfect opportunity for the DLP to clarify, once and for all, the issues and ease the fears on this Cahill deal.
Freundel and co. could have used the acquiring of the 27 acres at Vaucluse to deal with the truth of the documents signed, including a letter from the Prime Minister himself, that instead of being brought to the public by the Government, have found their way to social media sites like Barbados Underground and in the hands of various people.
But welded to its shadow dancing, the DLP comes and expects Barbadians to believe that the same 27 acres mentioned in the Cahill deal, at the very Vaucluse, is magically for some greening project, which is as hazy as the Cahill deal itself.
None of the questions regarding the funding of the project, the size of the plant, the time limes, the Environmental Impact Study, the water requirements, the garbage requirements, the discussion or absence of such with Barbados Light & Power, the Government’s – meaning the people of Barbados – liabilities…..not a single question was answered.
This is how Barbados is now ruled. By a mob, laws unto themselves.
That behavior took a turn for the worst in the Senate where Verla Depeiza displayed all the ignorance about the Cahill deal that is like a fog around members of the DLP, most of whom have steadfastly refused to utter a word on the subject, and all the venom of a Government that feels it is unanswerable to anyone. She should have adopted her usual stance of saying nothing. Or at least take her own advice and educate herself before becoming frenzied.
But she managed to mangle the properties involved in plasma gasification, mixing up outputs such as ethanol and hydrogen as energy sources from the plant, again in futile attempts to justify the deal.
More dangerous, in response to BLP Senator Wilfred Abrahams reading a letter from the office of the Prime Minister which confirm a deal, Depeiza, instead of dealing with the document, issued a tirade about the leaking of documents and that those who do are committing treason and should be punished according.
What an outrage! Crack heads, censure Charles Morris, threaten Dr. George Belle with sedition. Charge anyone who dares to do what the Government should be doing with treason. This is the great DLP.
And in 2015, a Senator, on a project such as Cahill, which amounts to a public project seeing how much Government has to foot and input, goes further and summons the stupidity to impart that ‘if everything was supposed to be in the public domain there would be no need for the Official Secrets Act.’
Colossal despotism from Depeiza typical of the DLP. What about the Cahill deal should not be known to the public?
On the contrary, everything about Cahill needs airing and clarification. As with so much over the years, the DLP is compromising Barbados’ good name and compounding what should be a simple matter by its refusal to come clean.
It is time for the circus that is Cahill ends. From the ignorance of Cowan herself on the proposed plant, to her missives referring to Government officials in derogatory fashion, to her reported conversations with her obeah woman. From the contradictory statements from Government Ministers to the exposure of what appears to be Government documents – not denied – to the entire world. From the dilly-dallying on what exactly is the Cahill deal to what are the binding requirements.
The DLP is fooling no one. There will be no camouflage. No cover-up.
