In 1884, one of the most influential Caucasian #AmeriKKKan scholars of the time, Nathanial Southgate Shaler, a Harvard scientist and prolific sociological writer on race relations wrote in the Atlantic Magazine: “There can be no sort of doubt that judged by the light of all experience, these people,” – BLACKS* – “are a danger to America, greater and more insuperable than any of those that menace the other great civilized states of the world.”

Sadly, 131 years on, this is still the sociopolitical thinking and narrative of our time based on the axiological ethics of so-called post-Enlightenment, pastmodern thinking. Then, like now, Black lives still don’t matter! So does it really resonate with the establishment when mass movements thunder #BlackLivesMatter? And if so, will Anglo-Saxon slavers and their beneficiaries pay financial & restorative restitution for the historical horrors of genocidal decimation of Black people around the world? Does even matter anymore?

To answer to these historically complex questions warrant more than just hollow rhetoric, protest movements or political jockeying & lobbying for reparatory justice & restorative restitution. What happens then after the money is paid and the apology given – if Providence allows it all to transpire? What’s next? Where do we go from that point onwards? Who is left to clean up the mess in the aftermath of what psychic damage has been done?

    Prime Minister Cameron shouts a loud NO to reparations call from the reason

    David Cameron has ruled out making reparations for Britain’s role in the historic slave trade and urged Caribbean countries to “move on”.

    The prime minister acknowledged that “these wounds run very deep” during his visit to Jamaica, where he faced calls to apologise from campaigners.

    He said Britain’s role in wiping slavery “off the face of our planet” should be remembered.

    Jamaican PM Portia Simpson Miller said she had raised the issue in talks.

    I think the biggest issue for the players, other than black Caribbean people, is separating the black slavery from all the rest. Evidence supports that most slaves shipped to British colonies prior to 1700 were Irish, many of which were children. That then raises the issues of the forced immigration of Scotts to N.Ireland (Ulster) plantations when the crowns of England and Scotland were united under James in 1601, the oppression of the Irish under James, Charles etc., enslavement of the Irish and Scotch Irish before the civil war and transportation to the New World, the anti-Catholic wars, the Cromwell wars against the same Irish and further enslavement and deportation, and all the bad politics that followed even before a single African slave existed in a British colony. The UK might be able to avoid the issue with Afro-Caribbean people but imagine the outcry from Irish descendants in the UK and US and, indeed, the Caribbean. As a Caribbean patriot I am embarrassed that the matter is even raised, smacks of blaming others for our own failures or just outright begging. I much prefer to represent myself as a proud descendent of fighters and survivors, too proud to beg for more thinly-veiled handouts and damned lucky to have ended up here.

    Excepting the “pleasure” side of it, which incidentally, I didn’t see expressed, why is it ironic to roll out a red carpet for a Royal?
    If Barbados was a Republic, would it not roll out a red carpet for a visiting Royal, whether they were from the UK or elsewhere?

    Boss, …Shaler was correct in his assessment of the potential danger that Blacks pose(d) to (his idea of) America. Perhaps he was actually as intelligent as he is said to have been.
    Black Bajans brass bowls also have the potential to completely revolutionise Barbados….

    Unfortunately, we Blacks ourselves have been unable to even see this potentiality …far less to realise it, and in fact we continue to crave the pity of these very people – who can so CLEARLY see what blacks CAN BE, that they have for centuries taken extraordinary steps – many illegal, all immoral, and some illogical, to protect their tenuous artificial societies from true Black influence.

    The unprecedented impacts from the few black outliers that have managed to reject the traditional black blindfolds bear testimony to the natural (God given) potentiality.
    Names like Mandela, King, Garvey etc jump out…
    …and Usain Bolt and the Williams’ sisters are but a small sampling of what is possible when the playing field is leveled and the rules are transparent….

    Nobody can apologise for misdeeds that they didn’t commit. Only an idiot would even attempt it.

    No living person can apologise, on behalf of a single and entire nation, for the abomination of slavery.

    Sweden is Sweden, and Jamaica is Jamaica, now, in the middle of the second decade of the twenty-first century, and only the truly dull of mind can fail to concede that most of Jamaica’s witless dysfunction is wholly home-made.

    It is a widely known fact that the New World slave trade turned gold-coast gold-miners into raiders to capture more slaves from further inland when slavery became more profitable than mining gold. It is also a known fact that, like the settlers in North America, goods (slaves) were traded for guns which allowed the slavers to acquire more slaves. What is less widely known is that mortality among the press-ganged crews of slave ships was higher (estimated 20%) than among the slave cargo (estimated 12% to 15%)

    As I tell foreigners regularly, very few in the New World prior to 1800 were here by choice. From governors back down to field slaves we would all have preferred not to be suffering existence in these disease-infested islands at war with French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Pirates, raiders, masters, magistrates, hurricanes, floods etc.

    It takes an extreme level of desperation or terrible circumstance to board a 100′ long boat to sail four months into oblivion with an 80% chance of arriving at your destination and another 50% chance of surviving five years.

    England was built off the backs of African slaves. Those who live in modern England still reap the benefits of the society WE in the Caribbean built for them with OUR forced labour.. They have ALL benefitted from slavery. And the effects still exist today because we started off at a tremendous disadvantage.

    But there will be no reparations because they are still the bastards that they were then. They haven’t changed much at all. As a matter of fact this GLOBALISATION thing and all the WTO rules and regulations constitute another attack.

    I think we should move on and create our own wealth. It is not an impossible task if we all put our minds to it. Let us look to the future. They will eventually destroy themselves.

    I don’t understand your logic beause how is endeavouring to understand race and race-relations within a given context not expanding one’s mind?

    Perhaps, after engaging this very sensitive and emotional issue, we come away even more confused and confounded than when we first started?

    I am British. My ancestors were British. They were agricultural labourers for over 350 years. They lived in huts in the countryside, suffered from the frequent famines and lived brutish, short lives. Some were deported for stealing nothing more than a loaf of bread. Their children died young and have no marked graves. Nothing like as bad as conditions under slavery but not good.
    3000 British residents received compensation for their slaves out of a population of 24 million. My ancestors obviously received nothing.
    I am a British tax payer. Any reparations payments will come from my taxes.
    I think slavery was an absolute disgrace but neither my ancestors nor I had anything to do with it.
    Why should I pay for reparations?

    And what is interesting about the reparation in America is the fact that the Japanese Americans have received their reparation for the wrongful imprisonment during the World War Two Internment Camps from the Clinton Administration during the 1990’s, but it would appear as though that no one wants to talk about the reparation for the millions of black people through the Americas.

    Now isn’t it a fact that the United States of America was built of the back of slave labour, well the very White House the epicenter of power was constructed with slave labour among many other things.

    Which of your ancestors fought for justice against slavery? Which one refused to enjoy the general benefits and wealth that derived to the Empire?

    It doesn’t matter how long the benefits took to trickle down to you, dear. What you are enjoying NOW was built off the backs of MY ancestors. ENGLAND would not be the modern country it is today without the free labour of MY ancestors. You can choose to acknowledge the debt or not but it will still always be there until it is paid. (Fat chance!) My ancestors died for YOU to have the good life! Suck it up and smell the BLOOD!
