What vitriol coming from our Minister of Education!
Pray tell me, Mr. Minister what is all of the invective about?
I have noticed a high increase of antipathy to unions in the operations of this Government – and especially from its ministers – and this does not augur well for our country. You are supposed to set an example for the students, but all you have done is exacerbate the situation between yourself and the teachers. The students will see it as exactly what it is – their type of behaviour coming from the mouth of the Minister of Education. How do you want to start “a new relationship with teacher organizations built upon honesty, built upon trust . . .” when you come out like the Bismarck with all guns blazing?
Don’t you think that your “adversaries” will shoot back?
Or do you expect them to raise their hands and surrender meekly?
It seems that all you wanted to do was to impress your boss!
But, in so doing you have put your foot deep into your mouth.
He has heard you, now all you have to do is to apologize to the teacher unions, the teachers, and the rest of this country!
Your speech is exactly the opposite of that which you should be making, seeing the amount of violent acts which have been perpetrated by young people in recent weeks. Yours should have been a calming one, not one made to try to make the unions bow to your whims and fancies.
We also have James Paul blaming the teachers for the deviant behaviour of the young people.
Where are their parents/guardians?

I think that you and the rest of this Government should stop trying to get rid of the unions, because it will not happen and they have the right to look after their constituents in the best way they can, which you, this “people-centred Government”, should also be doing.
I don’t expect you or anyone from this Government to apologize for anything, because you are all in stand-your-ground mode and, seeing that the Pope has said that he is not infallible, you have all taken over his role in that matter.

We are really in trouble with this lot. Seems that bad talk is the order of the day with this government. Talk proud and provide the pep speeches at party meetings and party celebrations but deal with all other matters like rug rats in a Nelson street setting.

I believe the minister’s intention was to place his foot firmly in his own mouth. Unfortunately as so often happens with people of this persuasion he neglected to confirm his orientation and as he was upside down at the time ended up with his foot placed elsewhere…..which appears to be where he speaks from most of the time.

Dear Alvin and others:
We expect Minister Jones and indeed all Ministers (whether B or D) to speak in an intelligent, thoughtful and reasoned way. We do not want them to shoot from the hip (metaphorically of course) We do not want them threatening to shoot people nor to crack their heads and no we do not want them calling journalists and others in the middle of the night to cuss.
Is this too much to expect for the $15,000+ per month salaries which WE PAY them?
We are workers too and we do not threaten to shoot our bosses nor to crack their heads. We do not invite our bosses to a fight.
The Ministers (both B and B) need to understand that we pay them. We are their bosses.
We deserve to be treated respectfully at all times.

The Government Information Service has a number of excellent people who are capable of writing intelligent, reasoned and thoughtful speeches for any Minister (B or D).

All ministries have administrative officers whose job is to write speeches for their ministers. Whenever Minister makes any public pronouncements, you would notice that he speaks from prepared texts and you cannot fault him for the content and because he is a trained broadcaster his delivery is usually good.
Stephen Lashley also speaks well and you cannot fault his delivery. Maybe Lashley could give his colleagues lessons. He is also a trained broadcaster. Most of the others give the impression that they are trained rabble rousers.

You are always talking about “bringing solutions,” especially against the background of this DLP administration being unable to present feasible/workable solutions as well.
During the 2013 election campaign, Owen Arthur presented a number of SOLUTIONS, which the DLP used propaganda to trivialize. Remember you DLP pimps saying in campaigns and advertisements, for example, that under a BLP administration Barbadians will be forced to pay for garbage collection; an introduction of user fees at the QEH; an increase in bus fare, while pensioners will have to pay bus fare as well; 10,000 public sector employees would have been retrenched.
The Barbados Economic Society, under Ryan Straughn and Jeremy Stephen presented this DLP administration with viable solutions, which the party dismissed, while calling Straughn and Stephen as “prophets of doom and gloom” and being in “bed with the BLP.”
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados offered solutions and they were also accused of pushing the BLP agenda as well as being “prophets of doom and gloom.”
Solutions were also suggested by the Private Sector Association, Barbados Manufacturers’ Association, Small Business Association, ORDINARY CITIZENS, etc., has offered and presented SUGGESTIONS to this DLP administration. All of which have been rejected.
The DLP seem to be of the opinion they are above criticism and anyone who dares criticizes them are pushing a BLP agenda. in other words, if you are either for us, if not, you are a member of the BLP.
Under these circumstances, why should anyone, group or organization offer to help the DLP?
The DLP also needs to stop lying to the public and manipulating economic and other data to substantiate their lies.

I read this obnoxious rant by Ronald Jones in the Nation. I thought about posting it here on BU and then decided it was not worth it.
I know these ministers operate in the gutter but could not believe that Jones could sink so low. This man is just ghetto trash and should be treated as such……putting on the latest expensive suit doth not a gentleman make! Why does he always speak as if he is in the fish market?
He has brought education to the lowest level ever seen in this country. Roy Morris’ column this week was on point.
Many of the senior officials he found in the Ministry of Education have now left…….one of them told me…………I could no longer work under this man, he has no manners, does not know how to treat people and being a primary school teacher he did not understand how or what it took to run the ministry especially at the secondary and tertiary level but behaved as he knew it all. This person was a career officer who has been my friend for eons. I could not tell anyone how the person votes, so committed and dedicated was the person to public service.
Sometime in 2008, I was at a speech day. It seem to me that because the DLP had just been elected, he was the invited guest speaker. Someone mentioned earlier that these ministers have public servants to write their speeches….that is very true……….Jones admitted that the PS gave him a speech to read but he was not about that………he turned it over and proceeded to obfuscate those in attendance………there and then I knew what to expect from the blowhard!
No surprise, therefore with his latest rant!

I enjoy listening to Stephen Lashley (see I am not a BLP operative) even if he has to give not so good news, he says what he has to say in an intelligent and respectful manner. I get the feeling that he understands that he is always on the job and that his job is to serve all of us Bajans all of the time. Because in truth all of us are helping to fund his pay cheque, and all of us will help to fund his pension. Nobody asks us if we are B or D when we go to pay our taxes.
Maybe somebody should point this out to Jonesey.

Even if you are speaking at a DLP meeting as a Cabinet Minister you are on duty al of the time (remember that $15,000+ per month, plus the nice, nice pension) and you must speak to all of the electorate/taxpayers.
