The Future Centre Trust (FCT) continues to be a willing advocate on matters related to the environment. It has assumed growing importance in a climate where Barbadians have shown themselves not to be sensitive to issues which pertain to the environment.

BU applauds the FCT for taking a lead role educating Barbadians on the topical issue of a secret company in the name of Cahill Energy allowed to enter a questionable agreement with government.

The FCT wrote to Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment & Drainage in 1 July 2013 when the Waste to Energy Facility was first whispered in Barbados. As far as BU is aware the government has not responded to what we all agree is the leading Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Barbados with a mandate to focus on educating Barbadians about the environment.

Last week the FCT held a very a successful Town Hall to promote concerns about the building of a plasma gasification plant in Barbados. The concerns being given voice by the FCT is about the use of a technology still at a nascent stage of development AND the lack of transparency about the proposed arrangement between the government and Cahill Energy.

In response to the FCT Town Hall, BU is bold to suggest, Cahill Energy will hold an Open House (Town Hall) on the 22 July 2015 at the Lloyd Erskine Sanidiford Centre. BU anticipates a good public response to the meeting and this is in large measure the result of the work of the FCT raising public awareness about the plasma gasification project.

In response to the 700 million Waste-to-Energy plant at Vacluse the Facebook Group Bajans Against 700 million Waste-to-Energy Plant unveiled its alternative to plasma gasification waste management approach by launching the Zero Waste Barbados movement. The Group has advised the public to wear something green at the Open House scheduled for Wednesday night to send the message of NO to CAHILL and PLASMA GASIFICATIO and YES to ZERO WASTE and 100% Solar/Wind Hybrid system with lithium battery storage.

The Facebook Group launched a logo for the occasion represented by the  colours promoted in the #4 of the 10-steps to Zero Waste. The white represents the need for clean air in communities while the Black represents the pollution from fossils fuels all around us, The focus by the  Group is to remove the black pollution from global space.

According the U.S. EPA, nearly one ton of C02 equivalent emissions are avoided for every ton of municipal solid waste handled by a waste-to-energy plant due to the

    Avoided CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion When a megawatt of electricity is generated by a waste-to-energy facility, an increase in carbon dioxide emissions that would have been generated by a fossil-fuel fired power plant is avoided.

    Avoided CO2 emissions from metals production. Waste-to-energy plants recover more than 700,000 tons of ferrous metals for recycling annually. Recycling metals saves energy and avoids CO2 emissions that would have been emitted if virgin materials were mined and new metals were manufactured, such as steel.

    The United States Conference of Mayors adopted a resolution in 2005 endorsing the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which identifies waste-to-energy as a clean alternative energy source which can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As of September 30 2010, over 1,040 mayors have signed the agreement.

    These are the real experts in technology with a proven and tested record, the question then who shall we believe the enviromentalist who as of yet to show sufficient proof that specifically bears proof with detail that outline the WTE is a environmental nightmare..Only fools argue with progress,

    Why is Digicel blatantly stealing the money off their customers phones when they top up. Many people are complaining about this, it’s bad enough there is no one on the island to regulate anything, no Better Business Bureau, no nothing.

    People on the island should be speaking out against this thievery and stop taking it in silence, the more you say nothing the more these thieving white boys from England and Ireland with their ridiculous sounding accents will be playing the roles of parasites while claiming that they are investing money on the island, all the while stealing your money….wake up

    Your quotes are from a publication by the Energy Recovery Council which “was formed to………promote waste-to-energy” so it cannot pretend to be impartial comment.
    By the way, the The United States Conference of Mayors seems to have changed its mind since 2005. It’s latest resolution on waste management from 2015 supports Zero Waste principles, and says waste should be dealt with according to the following hierarchy:
    – Extended Producer Responsibility and Product Redesign
    – Reduce Waste, Toxicity, Consumption, and Packaging
    – Repair, Reuse and Donate
    – Recycle
    – Compost
    – Down Cycle and Beneficial Reuse
    – Waste-Based Energy as disposal
    – Landfill Waste as disposal
    So waste to energy is almost last on the list, for the final stubborn items that can’t be reduced, reused, recycled, composted etc. The hierarchy looks as though it might almost have been written by the Future Centre Trust.
    Barbados has signed over its entire waste stream to Cahill. That’s not progress, that’s what the Americans suggested in 2005 and have now discarded.

    Clare Cowen and her silent partners are looking to resurrect the sunken HMS CAHILL ship from the bottom of the Caribbean sea. The HMS CAHILL has been torpedoed and even had some depth charges hit Her, she now rest in pieces on the ocean floor. It is a pointless effort to attempt to raise Her as She is of no value/use whatsoever.

    How did u form such a conclusion basically the Mayors expanded but did not retract their opinoon on the necessity for WTE plants

    Does it not make sense if 80 to 90 percent of our waste can be recycled that we do so as a SID and not go the incinerator path? What kind of Jackasses are we? Barbados is a small island only 21×14 and obviously cannot be compared to North America and Europe with a large landmass.

    Read it. WTE is retained only for waste that cannot be dealt with any other way. We are intending to burn everything including valuable PEP bottles etc.
    By the way, what does the Government intend to do with Dennis Lowes specially bought green recycling collection truck, burn it or use it for something else?

    The Barbados Renewable Energy Association has issued and had published today Sunday July 26th a statement (Sunday Sun, P 30A) expressing fundamental opposition to the Cahill project on several grounds It says the project will increase rather than reduce electricity rates across the board, thereby impacting the cost of living and doing business on the island. The 10-point statement advocated a policy of 100 per cent Renewable Energy generation (winds, solar and storage) as necessary to achieve lower electricity costs, reduced fuel imports, increased foreign exchange savings and additional revenue generation for the Government. BREA said it was available to engage Government in transparently exploring alternative strategies for sustainably satisfying the island’s waste management and RE electricity generating needs.
