If there is a group of inexperienced and irresponsible “leaders” who have done serious damage to our country that group is not to be found in the trade unions of Barbados! Rather, they are to be found in the Freundel Stuart-led Democratic […] Labour Party administration!

Who – after all – is responsible for the dismissal of close to 5,000 Barbadians from their jobs in the public service of our country?

Who – for the first time in our history – imposed tuition fees on Barbadian students at the University of the West Indies, thereby causing some 4,200 Barbadians to drop out of UWI?

Who is it that recently imposed an additional $200 Million in taxes on an already over-taxed and over-burdened Barbadian people?

Who is it that has taken virtually every Governmental contract of any worth and conferred them upon a small select group of elite business people?

Who is it that has entered into contractual arrangements that obligate the masses of Barbadian taxpayers to literally pay hundreds of Millions of dollars to a small group of privileged elite business people over the next two or three decades ?

The record is clear! Barbados is being destroyed – not by young Toni Moore and Akanni Mc Dowall – but by Prime Minister Stuart and his band of Ministers, the majority of whom may legitimately be described an immature, callous, irresponsible and rudder-less.

How comic it is to hear Stuart complaining that the new President of the NUPW does more talking on behalf of the Union than the General Secretary, when he (Stuart) has absolutely no control over no less than 5 of his Ministers, namely, Donville Inniss, Chris Sinckler, David Estwick, Ronald Jones and Denis Kellman!

Furthermore, if Stuart wants to talk about new wine in old wine skins then we need to tell him that his Administration constitutes a “new wine” that we, the citizens of Barbados, do not recognize!

We all recall and recognize the late Errol Barrow and the Democratic Labour Party that he established. But we do not recognize Mr Stuart’s Democratic Labour Party! The Freundel Stuart – led DLP administration is something totally new in our political culture! Where Mr Barrow’s DLP constructed and nurtured Mr Stuart’s DLP attacks and destroys!

“How could our team remain ignorant of these facts? What were the factors that led them to overlook them? What?”
Possibly the wish to be remembered as the ecological saviours of Barbados. Surely not “consultancy fees” paid off-shore.

Balance and Dompey, of course the parties have changed and in many regards continue to do so today. There are members today in both of them who sit across the liberal-conservative-libertarian spectrum as they did in a comparative way eons ago. Many members are racist in both camps even as both camps strongly embrace Blacks, Hispanics, Japanese and Chinese etc.

Dompey you are something of a classical man as you make representations in an ‘old English style somewhat unique to you. You certainly can spin and parse the written words to suit your argument. I am disappointed often that you do not focus more on the context. But you certainly shout that you KNOW your history.

“His concerned lied more towards saving the Union rather than the slaves. Remember now Lincoln said: if he could have saved Union without freeing the slaves he would have done so. And if he could have freed the slaves and saved the Union he would have also done so. Lincoln, also believed that the black wasn’t his moral and intellectual equal.”

So what are you saying here Domps? That Lincoln was as inherently racist as them all and was basically only an accidental ‘hero’ as voice for abolition?

There is an old saying in the English language [first recorded in 1609] money makes the mare fly

    …in 1609 and in 2015

    Human nature does not change.

  7. 3 MORE YEARS?
Controversial Cahill Energy project unlikely to begin before 2018

There’s uncertainty surrounding the date for the start of the controversial Cahill Energy Project, and it could be at least three years before it materializes.

That’s according to Kerry McKenna, Practice Leader in Gasification and Coals to Liquids at Hatch – the Honour Engineer for Cahill Energy – who explained that designs for the project were still ongoing.

Speaking from his office in Mississauga, Canada this morning, McKenna told Barbados TODAY that due
to the complexity and nature of the venture, it could take between three to six years to complete the waste-to-energy project.

“These projects vary in length. As you go through the engineering and design phases, they take a few years to design, and then there is also financing steps which sometimes delay these type of projects, so it could be anywhere from three years to five or six years depending on how many bumps happen to occur,” McKenna revealed.

“There are a lot of factors and it’s a big window, but there are a lot of things that can still happen . . . but a concerted timeframe would be anywhere from three to six years.”

The technology engineer stressed that there had been no agreement on a start-up date for the project.

“I’m not aware of any confirmed date. There are a bunch of engineering steps that are going to be needed to be progressed through, so we are still doing a lot of design work and selecting the final technologies and things like that.

“There needs to be an environmental assessment and a permitting process that needs to go through. So all those steps that we are still getting to, create some uncertainty as to exactly how long it will take in terms of the time for constructing,” McKenna noted, stressing that this was typical for projects of this nature.

However, during a town hall meeting at the Lester Vaughan School on Monday night, the former professor of Chemistry
at St Lawerence University of New York, Paul Connett, suggested that a waste-to-energy plant in Barbados was unlikely to become a reality.

“Don’t get too scared, because they’re not going to build the stupid thing. It won’t happen, either because of the legal aspects, or the people of Barbados just won’t stand for it,” Connett told the packed audience gathered for the event, organized by the Future Centre Trust.

“Before I came to Barbados, I had no knowledge of Barbados,” Connett said, in an attempt to emphasize his neutrality. “I have no interest in the politics here [or] the political parties, I have no axe to grind.

“I am just going to give you what I believe, based upon 30 years of studying waste management.”

Connett, who is a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, and author of the book, Zero Waste Solution – Unthrashing the Planet One Community at a Time, suggested that a waste conservation solution would be a more suitable option for Barbados.

“We want model solutions, and my dream for Barbados is to help this island become a model for the whole Caribbean. We want Barbados to show that an island can develop a circular economy, and persuade not only the rest of the Caribbean to follow suit and cooperate on this, but also to be a model for every island in the world,” he insisted.

“I’ve been to many islands – Hawaii, Isle of Man, St Maarten, Curacao Puerto Rico, Guam. . . and they’re all struggling to handle the waste problem, because they’ve all taken the attitude of, ‘let’s find a place to put it.’”

The Guernsey-based Cahill Energy announced in March 2014 that it had signed an “historic” agreement with the Government of Barbados to build and operate “a leading edge” US$240 million clean energy plant in n Vaucluse, St Thomas. The company said it would utilize “the most innovative technology available” to transform all kinds of waste on Barbados into clean, renewable energy.

Opposition Leader Mia Mottley has questioned Cahill Energy’s ability to deliver, while warning that plasma gasification technology was “largely untested commercially”. She has also called on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to release details of the agreement to the public.

McKenna said while he understood some of the concerns being raised about the multi-million dollar project, there was no reason to fear.

He pointed out that similar technology had been instituted in countries such as Japan, as well as across Europe.

“The technology which is going to be used in the project, called plasma gasification, this process has been demonstrated in Japan where it has been operational for over 10 years. It’s being introduced in Europe and there are two major plants of similar scale being built in England right now,” the engineer explained.

“It’s very well researched and used in England in terms of the health effects to the local community, so we know it’s quite safe,” he said

Understand your frustration but you should note the DPP can act only when the police presents a file based on an investigation.

David, are you referring to the same police who have time to prosecute the NationNews staff and addition time to appeal the court ruling? Are you saying that they don’t have time to pursue what could possibly be financial crimes agains the country? Oh, I forgot they are busy investigating and putting together a case against a person who is not a leper. How long can an investigation last? In Barbados, forever!

    @FearPlay July 15, 2015 at 1:12 PM “and dare I say Church”

Anglican priest Charles Morris has already called out Bishop John Holder for being silent. But Holder is a St. John boy…is he an ardent DEM as well?…

SS, your point is taken regarding Charles Morris but he is not the CHURCH, he is an employee. What about the leaders of the Anglican Church and the Roman Catholic Church taking a stand on behalf of the people of Barbados against what is happening in the country. So what if Bishop JH is from St John, are you suggesting that he too has inhaled idiot dust? He was elected to be a shepherd of all of the flock, not the DLP flock. What also of all the other “Disciples” who speak with God personally? Cat got their tongues? If the Church and business is not part of the solution they have allowed themselves to become part of the problem.

    balance,

Not up for an argument right now about America. My very deep concern right now is for Barbados.

Good for you Donna. Don’t be sidetracked into a meaningless discussion for discussion sake. Let the Americans worry about the historical underpinnings of their political parties. We’ve got our own problems. Let’s solve them first.

THere was just another earthquake in Barbados at 11:17 am

Sending white powder to the NUPW’s offices, the unions that are trying to make sure that the basic human rights of the average bajan is no longer suppressed, smacks of desperation and obviously the dirty and disgusting deeds of the politicians, their lowlife sycophants, lackeys and yardfowls; they just compounded what I have been saying all along about the modus of both BLP/DLP against their own people for over 45 years.

AC, as honorary DLP yardfowl, lackey and sycophant, did you help deliver that white powder to the Union’s headquarters to drive fear into the hearts of the workers of Barbados…if you did shame on you.

People on the island are saying the DLP cannot produce enough powder, white or otherwise to prevent them from fighting for their rights….so there.

Desperation makes people do stupid things like the below, particularly when you are inbred and the product of incest.

  11. If the white powder fails to achieve its objective the is always the cracking of skulls and s******g of a few people. Desperate times require desperate behavior.

On another note, The Mighty Gabby sang a song some years ago titled “Send an answer fun we”. Does anyone know how to get a link to this song posted here. Listening to it recently on VOB, it sounded as though it was written for our present circumstances.

  12. I hope they find the cowardly lowlife scum who sent that letter.

Even if the powdery substance was flour or talcum powder it is still a criminal act as far as I am concerned.

  13. It looks like what David Thompson started is still alive and well doesn’t it! Let all the DLP fools stand up now, and be heard for all their ignorance, and if the BLP is really watching, they better be learning. For all the public workers, shut up an go to work, and be thankful you have a job!

  14. the problem with bim to day is it needs a reset , like a computer hard drive when it has so many viruses no matter what you do will not put it right. so maybe a south africian type tell all and get forgiven and move on to the right path , if you fall off then bear the full force of the law, because there are so many people involved from both sides of the isle and some in between ,that the virus cannot be easily be deleted.

  16. There’s me thinking after spending a lifetime in the UK, returning to the Caribbean for rest and leisure would be easygoing! Sadly, not so…! There’s me thinking I could fit in quite easily in with my people…! Sadly, not so…! There’s me thinking our Goverment must have learnt something from past ancestors about caring for the welfare, education and economics of the people…! Sadly, not so…! That’s it…!!! I’ve stopped thinking… It’s time for ACTION…!!!
