NEW YORK: The Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) condemns the assassination of well known Guyanese anti-PPP government activist, former Guyana Defense Force Officer Courtney Crum-Ewing, while campaign against Guyana’s ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

CGID expresses outrage at the unrelenting killing, with impunity, of PPP opponents, solely because of their anti-government activism. Almost all of these murders are unsolved. The refusal of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to seriously investigate these murders is a repudiation of justice and a mockery of the rule of law.

Mr. Crum-Ewing’s assassination is reminiscent of the assassination of journalist Ronald Waddell, who was killed by a death squad allegedly operated by then PPP Cabinet Minister Ronald Gajraj and Roger Khan – now convicted and imprisoned in the United States.

This latest assassination followed a hate speech by former President Bharrat Jagdeo, which appealed to the evil Trojan of Guyana’s politics – race and racial violence.  Mr. Jagdeo hurled the most profane racial epithets and deserves harsh condemnation.

Courtney Crum-Ewing was in Diamond Village, Guyana, on Tuesday evening, using a loudhailer to urge citizens to go out and vote in the general elections on May 11, 2015. While in the act of campaigning, a car with four occupants drove up and shot him in the head. He was taken to the Diamond hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mr. Crum-Ewing’s relatives have called for independent international pathologists to observe the autopsy, as well as for independent forensic and ballistic experts to assist in the investigation. We will pursue this matter with US officials.

Mr. Crum-Ewing was a zealous protester against Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, who was caught on tape threatening that journalists at Kaieteur newspapers, Guyana’s largest daily, will die in retaliation for their exposure of alleged corruption involving the Attorney General. Gunmen previously attacked the premises of the newspapers and killed several employees.

This is incontrovertibly a political assassination calculated to provoke a reaction that will engender racial fears and polarization, as the nation prepares for general elections. This evil tactic must not be tolerated; especially at this juncture of unprecedented unity, which has propelled Guyana to threshold of dramatic political change. It must be aggressively repelled by right thinking members of the security forces.

CGID calls for the speedy arrests and prosecution of Mr. Cum-Ewing’s killers. We call on President Donald Ramotar to request the assistance of international law enforcement in this investigation as the people have no confidence in the GPF to conduct an objective, unbiased and professional investigation.

We also call on the people of Guyana to remain resolute in the fight for political change and the restoration of full democracy to Guyana.

  4. Where are the people in Barbados, like Henry ‘Deboulay’ Forde, who use to be talking a lot of shite bout Guyana under Burnham, are now?

Guyana has, over many years now, been degenerating into a state much worse than under Burnham, although under him be has the Walter Rodney killing and maybe others, but now this land of water, large mass and small population has degenerated into what could become a world centre for crime.

And suspected political killings along with unsettled racial issues provide the circumstances for a permanently failed state.

  6. This is not surprising. At the PPP launch for this year general elections at a place name Babu John in Berbice, former president Bharat Jagdeo cuss like a pirate and made some of the most degrading and racist remarks against Black Guyanese.
Guyana is a cesspool and definitely a failed state. Thanks to the corrupt, racist and vindictiveness PPP government.
A party that is power for over twenty (20) years) instead of boasting of its achievement is always constantly harping about what transpired under a dead Forbes Burnham administrations. No wonder Guyana is in the state it is in – vision-less leaders.
Indo-Guyanese do not want a Black man to lead Guyana but would ran from an Indian led Guyana and reside in countries that are being lead by black Governments – Barbados,St Lucia & Antigua come to mind.
I am beginning to feel happy and satisfied that at least this government is trying to do something with our immigration policies.
I applaud Ronald Jones & Darcy Boyce for their recent comments on immigration matters.
Indo-Guyanese and Indians on a whole are bad for Barbados.Let us continue to keep check on them.
Barbados must never, never ever allow itself to become another Guyana or Trinidad. That will spell disaster for this nation.

  7. It is a pity ordinary Bajans lack the capacity to feel outrage to what is happening in Guyana.

    @ David [BU]

You said “It is a pity ordinary Bajans lack the capacity to feel outrage to what is happening in Guyana…”

Over the years what has been happening in Bulbados is the manifestation of epigenetics where “the external environment’s effects upon genes can be influenced by environmental factors that impact the genetics of an individual’s offspring”

The hypothesis is that “in certain parts of the world in which social systems are highly centralized, environmental information might have influenced the genetic makeup of families”

In simplest terms “The nigger who did come to Bulbados while an IBO, over the course of the years would have devolved into a diffrent nigra than he who went to Jamaica”

The acute sense of “looking out for oneself” that characterizes the Bulbadian society that you are seeing here today, where not a man Jack doan really care bout anybody else.

Such epigenetically prescribed behaviour may be best exemplified by incidents of rape, murder and other grievous crimes against families of the privileged all about Barbados

Prior to these sad instances, “certain individuals” NEVER have anything to say publicly about the state of affairs in places like “Gaza and the Marl Holes of Bulbados” but when it hits home in their neck of the woods, all of the righteous indignation statements flood the front pages of our newspapers and we can have island wide searched with drones for the kin of the privileged.

So what if Courtney Crum Ewing get passed way in Guyana, we Bajans are not concerned, even when it happens next door to us furthermore when it happens to a guyanese…

I say that mindful of the fact that I have not sought the opinion of Mr. Charles Leacock our Guyanese Director of Public Prosecutions…

Yet we appear to become easily preoccupied with what is happening in the USA.
