Is Barbados suffering from a leadership vacuum?
Is Barbados suffering from a leadership vacuum?

The level of student on student violence in the United States has reached a level which should concern the world Barbados included. We are bombarded 24/7  by streaming into our homes via TV, Internet, radio and other forms. Most if not all Barbadians have family and friends who reside in the US, we visit for recreation, business and education. The influence of the US culture is pervasive and strong parenting and leadership is required to influence our children and wider society from being consumed from this marauding culture fashion by values which conflict with the Barbadians and West Indian way.

All of us hope and pray the level of student violence which is currently being visited on the USA will never infiltrate our traditional ‘docile’ culture, BUT,  the signs are evident the gestation period fed by two decades of US led globalization is about to deliver. The Alexander School Commission of Inquiry shifted the veil covering the inner workings of our school system, BUT, sadly it has not resonated with the wider population by galvanizing a movement of concerned parents (citizens). The Inquiry exposed an inept and inefficient ministry of education; the body responsible for educating and nurturing the next generation. Similar to the USA and other countries we have become fixated with paper trophies at the expense of educating our children to be the best citizens. Again, let us hope in Barbados we have not reached the point where the teacher of the year in New York was retrenched because of budget cuts, or have we.

We know the problems after six years of the government promoting the political slogan it is intent on building out a society and not just an economy. Have we witnessed any difference to judge for incremental societal improvement compared to the pre 2008 period? Have we as an educated populace placed importance on holding the government accountable to the slogan? Do we even care?

BU empathises with Barbadians who are feeling frustrated at a status quo which is being protected by the political directorate. Also frustrating is the extent to which the national discourse is being controlled and manipulated by those with narrow agendas. MORE frustrating is the unwillingness of the silent majority in Barbados to become more agitated and force change. There is also the saying ‘’Change or Die’’.

What will it take for the majority of Barbadians to come alive to the reality we have to change the way WE manage our little island or die. There is BU emphasis on the WE because of the fashionable notion we have to mirror the value systems of other societies to acquire the label of being progressive. What WE have to do is to determine what kind of society we want Barbados to become and do it.

Civil society is comprised of many stakeholders some more influential that others. If our politicians and public servants lack the intelligence, commitment, esprit de corps and other desirable qualities to pursue relevant policies in the interest of Barbadians – then ordinary citizens will have to do it.  It may seem obvious that this has always been the solution but conventional wisdom explains what happens when a human being becomes too comfortable.

    THE MAIN CROOK OF EDUCATION,

NOW HE WANTS TO PUSH T,T, TOBE NUMBER 11 OF THE HERO OF BARBADOS,

It has always been clear from Sir Cave’s choice of schooling for his children, where his hero-worship REALLY resided….

With Beckles at helm, the UWI will see little or no changes. Universities around the world are changing to suit the employment needs of the people. The Caribbean needs to look beyond the Academics! We’ve enough Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers etc, in my opinion.
It would be extremely interesting to know the % of graduates working in fast food outlets and other forms of employments which belittle their education.
The UK is awash with such well educated graduates working in such fields of work! Hence the massive changes taking place in Higher Education in the UK…!

  5. @Mr Watson Parkinson

    Good comment.

Managing a national education program is a challenging undertaking and if not done properly will reverberate negatively for generations to come.

  6. @ Watson
    …fast food outlets…?
You should check how many are working as clerical officers in other places, jobs that can be, (and were previously) done PERFECTLY with two CXCs, but are now held by persons with Masters degrees – paid for by taxpayers to satisfy Sir Cave’s fantasy of a graduate in ever house…..

UNDER WISE LEADERSHIP, That damn money would have been directed at preparing BARBADIANS to be competent managers and businessmen – so that our assets could be locally owned and managed ….and PRODUCTIVE.
…as it is, most businessmen are of the old plantation types – who DID NOT EVEN GO To UWI, ….and most managers are Canadians, English, and Trickidadians types- who did not go there either….

…but THEY hire the expensive UWI clerks to do the routine stuff….
How the hell can we compete with others who use MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE resources to do the same (and even better) work in areas like tourism etc…?

“Universities around the world are changing to suit the employment needs of the people. The Caribbean needs to look beyond the Academics! We’ve enough Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers etc, in my opinion.”

Beckles et al would NEVER believe that, a graduate in every household is meant to demoralize the students cause unless they leave the island and spread their wings they would be expected to work with their masters/bachelors/associate degrees for the likes of cow, seale, bizzy, jada, simpson, the little indian stores in and around brigetown, ram merchandani, some of the corporations in Barbados, which are very few and only if they are well connected and if they are really connected, the government, there are now doctors and lawyers in Barbados unable to find work, keep spewing out graduates yeah, but then the population and business environment remains the same sizze, no where to go…….it’s a disgrace, but try explaining that to people on the island with professorships and degrees coming out of their asses, they are totally unable to comprehend the elementary.

Hey David, are you on “LinkedIn?” You can check my profile!
25 years as a secondary school teacher, up to A Level standard… 10 of those years as Vice Principal of one of the first London Academies… My mandate was 3 years to have the Academy up and running.
The last five years as lecturer at Christ The King College London…!
I’m now semi- retired and living in this beautiful country. I would so love to get involved in the secondary to higher education
re-structuring, if the Minister of Education decides to revamp the system.

  10. The condition of so many clerical officers in government and other places having high cost degrees (BA/MA) to perform mundane tasks makes you wonder what would happen to a colony of bees if the majority of worker bees decided to pursue a university education, received a degree of questionable quality and then returned to the colony with their expertise. Would the colony be any better off as a result of this higher level of education?
We have never had so many graduates in this county before including the many PhD’s, yet more and more CEO’s and MD’s are American, British, Canadian and Trini. Check the latest work permit request in the print media of the past few days seeking permission to bring in yet another CEO for a home grown mega corporation with its origin in the field of electrical contracting.

  11. this article should have been written twenty years ago..sorry too late..now it is time to come to grips that selfishness and greed has no place in building a society which all are guilty of..now it is to clean up the mess.however painful it must be.

  12. Take a look down at the millions of wasted dollars at Weymouth, Roebuck St. Buses out of service. There the jobs to get them back in service. Not enough for us to take because all the school children we stand! Need school fleet to service district there are in . Why children all over town liming. We have a minister transportation, whats he doing? Whole country in shitter……………..

  13. Didn’t want to leave education off the hook. Need more trades jobs. Afterall who do the lawyers, teachers call to fox their car, or roof, or toilet, etc, certainly not another lawyer. Theres a whole new world out there, educators need to explore it!

According to Nelson Mandela, if you want to know and understand the ethos of a country, spend time in its prison. It’s not about how a country treat it’s well-to-do, but how a country treats it’s poor and needy…! It’s time this country stop aping Canada, USA and especially the UK…! If truth be told those countries don’t give a damn about Barbados…! The Uk class system is ruining Barbados; we have more Sirs and Dames on this little rock than all the other Island combined…! WHY IS THAT…???

  15. Mr W P
Oh the Joy of “KNOWING” all about Barbados
    POOR AND NEEDY???
    Barbados prisoners??
Is that a very bad joke.?

Pwobablee not old boy just a jolly jape!!
Also “APE” is a word that one should avoid when in conversation with the black fellows .
    Old boy!!

We do NOT” APE” anyone as you so bluntly put it.
We have loyal and long served respectable and respected men of calibre, some of whom. also have a lot of money, knighted out of our everlasting gratitude to their contributions to the Country.

  16. Fascinating that people are now repeating what I’ve been saying here about UWI for yonks but apparently to an empty room. Is that citizens coming to grips?

    David

On “change or die”…what exactly do you want people to do and will you lead the charge?

  17. Dr Love

    Try showing it.

  18. Read somewhere in the local press Minister Jones highlighted the need for an increase in the mean score of the 11 plus exam. It makes one wonder who is responsible for ensuring there is improvement in the standard of education in Barbados.

  19. David, perhaps, Minister Jones is alluding to the fact that there is an obvious need to improve the teaching-strategies, to achieved the above mentioned objective?

  20. And David, isn’t the individual teacher responsible for the overall grade of student based on his or her teaching- strategies? Teachers here in America are given the latitude to implement their individual teaching- strategies to achieved the desired objectives.

  21. David, are you tell us that the primary school curriculum is so rigid that it allows for no latitude?

  22. David, back in the day when a pupil fell behind in the rest class, the teacher would separated that pupil from the rest of the class and apply his or her teaching-strategies to bring that pupils up to speed.

  23. And who is ultimately responsible for managing the performance of teachers if the goal of moving the mean is not achieved?

Is there a performance management system in place?

  24. David:
Are you doing a post on the world cup?

  25. @Lemuel

No short term plan to cover the corrupt FIFA today.

  26. @ David
Perhaps someone should tell Jones that his salary is intended to be an incentive to achieve the results that he keeps calling for….
SOME SHIITE IS WRONG WITH THESE POLITICIANS FUH TRUTH…..

…on another note he was recently calling for those owing the revolving student loan fund to pay up…..
Who is responsible for the performance of THAT scheme again….?

One hope that when the results of the recent FIFA audit of the BFA (crooks auditing crooks?) those found wanting will also pay up…..

  27. @Bsh Tea

Also how long is too long to have debt owed reflected as liability?

Dr Love or should I say Dr Hate…! LOL…! I see you’ve taken the Ape word seriously, touched a nerve, ouch…! By your comments, I see you love this beautiful country, and why not… I’ll use another word “Ostrich” and what does an Ostrich do… In your case the first sign of the TRUTH and you bury your head…!
Why don’t you pop down to Miami Beach one early morning and listen/talk to the people that built this country!
Listen to returning Barbadians who have to lock their doors, who have be mindful of their foreign accent because of the fear of being over-charged, who have to humble themselves when they go to the port to collect belongings.
Finally, you used the term “Black Fellow!” I am proud of my skin aren’t you…!
If you contribute to your country then your country should honour you, not the UK…! Prey, tell me what the Sirs and Dames of Barbados has contributed to the UK…!? Oh, I see Barbados is still little England…! Well, let let you into an open secret; the UK abandon this country in 1966, you must have know that fact. Sadly, like a child we are still holding out our hand for support…!

    PS… What are you a Dr of…!? LOOOL…!!!

And people accusing me of bashing the government? Well they seem to be bashing themselves

Imagine the Prime Minister said in regards to Moody’s report and I quote ‘what they say has as much value as what you would see in any garbage dump collected by the SSA’

Yet Jepter Ince, a government senator, in the Senate said that Moody’s COPIED the governments Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for 2013/2014.

Should the public interpret this to mean that the Prime Minister thinks his government’s estimates were rubbish and ‘has as much value as what you would see in any garbage dump collected by the SSA’

I see you have a big box of plasters .One for every wound.
As I wrote earlier,”it must be wonderful to know everything about Barbados”
I think I should change that from Barbados to EVERYTHING.
How long have you actually lived in this “paradise”?
    I do hope you survive.!

  34. David

To give voice to your question regarding teachers performance and oversight. When I was in primary school; teachers used to go to the Teachers- College annually for their performance testing.( am I not correct)? And a teacher of mine didn’t make it one year and could not teach because he hadn’t met the standard. I do recalled!

  35. @ Dompey
    …you do “recalled”…???
    ++++++++
…so since that time you did not have an English teacher …is that it?

Piss off! I am here wondering if you attended school at all stupid? You get around this blog day and night and emulate phrases and popular sayings from others and spew them as though you have been to school. Your sugarcoated hyperbole does little to convince myself and others here that you have attended any school.

  38. Bush Tea
your conversation sir, undermines the intellectual atmosphere of this blog and it is time David move to censor you once and for all. Bushie, any fool can criticize, complain and condemn, but it takes the wisdom of the wise to know the difference. You ought and must learn how to correct rather than to condemn, criticize and malign those who have made an innocent mistake old man.
