Adrian Loveridge - Hotelier
Adrian Loveridge – Hotelier

While it is probably most hotelier’s dream to fill their property every night of the year at published rack rates, the reality is quite different and that is where marketing creativity becomes even more crucial. Our larger hotels are predominately tour operator dependent but that comes at a price, being forced to contract rates well below direct booking room prices that may appear on their websites.

One alternative is to look for smart partnerships with established global entities like Luxury Link IncQuoting verbatim from their own website ‘With more than half-million targeted, sophisticated travellers a month, the Luxury Link Travel Group is the only online travel company focused on matching consumers with the right hotel through marketing, promotions and cross-channel exposure. This unique business model provides lead generation, advertising, branding and distribution services to luxury and upscale hotels, cruise lines, tour companies and villas around the world’.

As someone who has used their services on several occasions, the attraction is obvious. A guaranteed high standard of hotel, four or five star at an overall price always well below published rates and usually a number of ‘extras’ included.

Up to five of our hotels in Barbados are either currently or have been featured by Luxury Link. To demonstrate the potential savings it can offer the consumer let us use one of the west coast four star hotels as an example.

Comparing the same 5 night stay in June, a junior suite with a pool or garden view booked directly would cost US$2,226.25 including daily buffet breakfast all taxes for two persons. Luxury Link offers two booking options. If your dates are flexible, you can bid by auction with a price as low as US$1,299, which is non-refundable. Or a ‘buy now’ alternative for US$1,559 which allows original confirmed booking dates to be changed. Both carry a booking fee of US$40. With this particular offer the Luxury Link bonus includes dinner for two on one night with champagne included.

The travel company features over 1,200 hotels across the world including major luxury brands like, Fairmont, Ritz-Carlton, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Oberoi, Destination Resorts, Orient-Express and Preferred, plus many independently owned options.  Airfare is not included, thus making this type of package the perfect match for those using frequent flyer miles to reach the location.

With a quoted ‘industry-topping 50 per cent repeat buyer rate’ it is clear that the concept works for the majority of their clients, both in terms of the purchaser and supplier. Luxury Link describes its coveted demographics as an ‘online travel audience (which) averages 45 years in age and US$175,000 in annual income’, clearly a very desirable target market for Barbados. 2013 recorded the lowest number of long stay visitors (508,520) for any of the last 11 consecutive years. With further reduced airlift in 2014, it will become even more challenging to augment arrival numbers. Therefore it is absolutely critical that ‘we’ grow both average duration of stay and net accommodation revenue.

With Luxury Link recently establishing an enhanced presence in the United Kingdom, we now have an improved opportunity in that market.

It is unbelievable that in an age and time where there is so little to go around, or so it apparently seems, they are people who STILL want THEIR way with OUR monies.
The tourism product once held high by this country is just about dead. Arrivals are down, and not just in 2013, or 2012, but for a long time now. Ideas have been thrown about related to Sports-Tourism, Eco-Tourism, Medical-Tourism and other incarnations of the dead product, but none of these can work, and for good reason. We, Barbados, refused to change when the world was undergoing a metamorphosis with respect to how products and services were marketed and presented. We believed that Sea, Sun, Sand and fun were all we needed to promote Barbados and our product and by that entitlement, people would continue to flock here in their masses. We could not develop and implement a new or novel idea if it were given to us by the Minister of Tourism from Mars. We think that we know everything and when our ideas don’t work, we blame everyone and everything else but ourselves. Don’t even start to mention the droves of Masters-Degree touting employees at the various national Tourism Marketing and promotional organizations. They are to be exalted on high as they know it all regarding tourism, but when examined for their accomplishments, we can only see failures.
It is apparently no secret that the economy is sluggish, under-performing and lethargic, yet supermarkets, and vendors have raised prices citing artificial shortages. Just last week, a bottle of pet vitamins went up by almost $1.00 from a popular pharmacy. That rise may seem un-important, but so did gasoline, and other commodities. This points to the makings of a price gouging scenario in its infancy. So when we keep raising prices across the board for everything, who do we really plan on attracting here?
What we seem to need to stem some of this tide, which has the potential to develop into a Tsunami is competition, and I mean real, fierce competition. NOT collusion under the appearance of competition.
Not having a leg to stand on, or a good idea to promote, hoteliers believe that they should keep doing what they did a decade or two ago and the rest of us should pay by way of mis-managed appropriations of our tax dollars to them.
Sandals got a “washing” of concessions and promises, tax-breaks and handouts which made those in the local hotel sector quite furious, and probably rightfully so. But the bulk of them have done little to nothing to energize tourism over the last two decades. So I guess, the government is going to try to make this work with a large conglomerate. I cannot speak to the wisdom, or lack thereof that this move may have, but I will say firmly it is time for Tourism and the parasites feeding on its decomposing carcass who just suck the lifeblood out of this country’s economy with their un-controlled, un-checked, and infinite greed to DIE!

It is unbelivable that in an age and time where there is so little to go around, or so it apparently seems, they are people who STILL want THEIR way with OUR monies!!!

Sea, Sun, Sand and fun is still a major reason why people from cold countries travel to tropical destinations.

Barbados needs to add value and enhancements to the existing product.

  4. The tourist to day is bombarded with opportunities to have vacations in warm climates. What should be looked into is where we rank on the “expense index for tourist destination” I think you will find we are significantly above many other places. There are many great location’s priced well. below Barbados. Then we have to look at the accommodation we have. The overwhelming majority of our hotels are getting old and in need of refurbishment. The lack of investment in new hotels and significant refurbishments is very closely related to our monetary policy as are tourist arrival numbers. Barbados is a very expensive destination that has a hard time delivering a true 4 or 5 star experience . Once we get competitive with places like Cuba, Mexico, DR, Costa Rica, Brazil then we have a chance to gain some momentum. .

  5. 6 Beaches to Visit Before They’re Gone

    by Courtney Lambert+

The beach is a beautiful thing, and we all enjoy lying in the warm sand and splashing about in the azure waves. But around the world, some of the most gorgeous shorelines on earth are threatened by environmental changes, economic development, and pollution. These may not be around for long; so here are 6 beaches to visit before it’s to late.

    The Maldives

This  stunning archipelago located in the Indian Ocean is known for silky, white sand beaches overlooked by towering sandstone cliffs and wonderful diving and surfing. It’s a tropical paradise unlike any other, but it also is in grave danger. The Maldives is the lowest country on earth and with rising sea levels due to climate change; it could be underwater in as little as a century.

  6. There is absolutely no relationship whatsoever between the amount of remunerations that the government evilly wickedly STEALS ROBS from the relevant people, businesses and other entities on a daily basis, and the actual work that is done by all government employees, or by all the relevant consultants to government, or the business that is done for government by the relevant business people in this country.

Indeed, it is a WICKED and MASSIVE LIE by some people within and without government in Barbados to suggest or tenor statements to the effect that the TAXATION SYSTEM in Barbados provides for such activities.

  7. It’s off topic, but it is tourism related and I thought BUers would be interested in this account of the shooting incident in Bath in which a Canadian vacationer was wounded. It is from the (Canadian) CBC’s web site :

Canadian shot in Barbados robbery kept alive by wife

A Canadian couple has a harrowing story to tell after masked men broke into their Caribbean vacation home and shot one of them during a struggle.

Jonathan and Heather Hubble say the ordeal — in which he was shot and his wife performed first aid while waiting an hour for an ambulance — has brought them closer together, deepening their respect for each other and leaving them grateful they and their infant daughter are safe.

The Hubbles, who are both in the Army, were vacationing in Barbados last month when four masked men walked into the house they were sharing with other family members.

  8. Oops, sorry I didn’t see that Sargeant beat me to it, and posted a link to the same story a few minutes earlier.

  9. Step up the tourism advertising in Quebec to come to Barbados , there are a lot of separatists with nothing to do this morning.

The “Canadian shot in Barbados robbery kept alive by wife” story is being broadcast on CBC News World television every hour.

  11. ‘It’s not a bad story’
The family says they are grateful to the doctors and nurses for their treatment. And despite their most recent experience, they will return to Barbados, where Jonathan has family ties. He says he loves the island.”

The Hubbles are also grateful to the country’s tourism board and police force, which assisted after the robbery, and the Canadian High Commission. The police arrested four men within a week of the robbery.”

Barbados has been fortunate that this couple has changed this from a horror story into one that is less damaging than it could have been.

  12. “it is not a bad story”, only because in the view of many it is much worse than a bad story, it is a horrible story, Here is another horrible story

    http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/22-y-o-Jamaican-killed-in-Barbados

Add it to the ever growing list of personal attacks and murder of tourists in Barbados. Some recent ones that come to mind are the murder of a Canadian from Ottawa at Long Beach, shooting of tourists at the waterfront, rape of British tourists.

It all adds up to what was a very nice place becoming less than that. Undoubtedly this is another negative being cast on our tourist product.

  13. Hants cut the bull it is a bad story , you know in Ottawa that on a regular medical emergency it is an optimum four minute tiered response anywhere let alone a gun shot. One hour for an ambulance??? that is the story here, if you need help in Barbados when it comes it will probably be too late. Barbados have to get those times down. Thank God nearly everything is made of concrete or these late arrival times would really be an issue for fire crews. Investment must be made in emergency services, even if times are tough. I bet someone could have pedaled one of those UAE rickshaws there faster

  14. Hants

Barbados has been fortunate that this couple has changed this from a horror story into one that is less damaging than it could have been.

Yes – less damaging than it could have been; but unfortunately the readers and the television viewers will still be left with

“A Canadian couple has a harrowing story to tell after masked men broke into their Caribbean vacation home and shot one of them during a struggle.

Jonathan and Heather Hubble say the ordeal — in which he was shot and his wife performed first aid while waiting an hour for an ambulance”

  15. Sorry to disappoint you Due Diligence but Canadians tend to disregard risks when travelling to vacation destinations.

  16. If that is the case Hants …why do the govts and newspapers always try to down play these events if it as you say Canadians are like a moth to a flame. Quit talking rubbish. If an American, Brazilian Jamaican was killed etc I would agree it may not register, but when it is a Canadian its like you have got one of us and I will think about it when planning a trip Canadians are some of the least risk takers of all, you can see that from are banking laws. DD you are right, funny … even though it happened a month ago it was all over the news only yesterday.

  17. @lawson,

    Barbados is not Canada.

I live in Toronto and we have an exceptional emergency response service.

Ambulance,Fire and Police respond and the Ambulances are “high tech.”

Lawson wrote “a regular medical emergency it is an optimum four minute tiered response anywhere”

    Please explain Lawson.

  18. Ottawa is about 1000 sq miles Barbados is 166 sq miles, we like you have tiered response which means we send everybody on a medical call ( I think that may have changed in TO) whoever gets there first starts treatment till someone with better equipment and experience arrives. the core area which rises by hundreds of thousands during the week is a optimal 4 minute response, out in the suburbs it may be 8-9 min and totally rural is 14 min which we are always trying to lower. Now it is pretty simple math the sooner medical treatment is started the better the chances.

  19. Thanks Lawson.

As Lawson said – Stop talking rubbish.

Ron James is comedian, not a social scientist.

One of the main reasons Canadians choose to vacation in Barbados, instead of Jamaica, DR or Mexico etc, despite the higher cost, is its reputation as a “safe” place.

Stories like this can only damage that “safe” image, in spite of the efforts of BTA and RBPF after the deed is done.

Bath is one of the most beautiful and secluded spots in Barbados for a quiet and peaceful vacation; but it is out in the middle of nowhere. Can you imagine those three-wheeled ambulances donated by the United Arab Emirates negotiating the roads to to get to Bath in less than an hour

  21. Thanks Due Diligence

  22. Mexico 1,598,000
    Cuba 1,082,000
    Dominican Republic 766,000
    Jamaica 243,000

  23. Lawson, first responders are trained in basic CPR and First- Aid and they usually give away to the more qualified Paramedic.

  24. Dompey, that is a fact depending on the extent of the medical emergency, paramedics will not enter if the area is not secure whether it is structural integrity, armed public, bomb threat etc Protocols are followed , situation is stabilized the best it can be by police or fire then the paramedics can do their work

  26. @Due Diligence

Very good information on the tourist numbers. What is even more interesting is the growth that Jamaica Cuba,, DR and Mexico have had over the last 5 or 6 years. Quite impressive. They all seem to have grown their markets, even though we are constantly told, there is a recessions. This simply points to the lack of competiveness offered locally. Our currency valuation has a lot to do with it.

  27. The following is note worthy because

Barbadians were told that Sandals would reopen December 2014, the change will obviously impact airlift:

Speaking in London earlier this week, Stewart said the company’s ‘next big task’ is the redevelopment of its Barbados resort, which he described as ‘incredible’.

The hotel opened last year but has now closed for US$65 million (GBP38m) to be spent on seven new restaurants; room refurbishments and the typical Sandals offering. It will reopen on 1 April.

Sandals Resorts’ chairman Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart said the company is focused on delivering its ‘Sandalised’ resort in Barbados as work continues across the Caribbean firm’s hotels.

“When we acquire this property in August, we knew we were buying great potential; here was a lovely resort that could be transformed into something truly magical,” said Stewart. “The time has now come for the ‘Sandalisation’ to start and drive forward into what is an exciting future for Sandals and Beaches as a destination.”

Barbados is the group’s second new destination in a matter of months after its Grenada property opened to success in December, although work is also being undertaken in its favourites.

Construction for a new Beaches Resort in Antigua will start in April or May next year with the cays and suites to be built first. A waterpark, Xbox Play Lounge, cinema, Kids Camp and other features will also be included in the new resort.

Meanwhile in Jamaica the Beaches Boscobel has been renamed to Beaches Ochos Rios Resort & Golf Club with US$30 million (GBP17m) spent on its new four-village look. These include the French Village with new suites, a wedding lounge, Red Lane Spa, piano bar and fitness centre, while the Greek Village includes whitewashed accommodation overlooking the sea. The Italian Village features the resort’s lobby and an open terrace while the Caribbean Village is close to the waterpark and restaurants.

“With this face-lift, we will solidify Beaches as Jamaica’s premier family resort in Ochos Rios,” said Adam Stewart, CEO of Sandals Resorts International.

  31. Caribbean Tourism Performance 2013

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has released complete 2013 Visitor Arrival data for most Caribbean destinations. Brian Samuel looks at winners and losers

For us number-crunchers, the performance of the tourism industry is measured by several widely accepted indicators: stay-over visitor arrivals, cruise ship arrivals, average length of stay; occupancy and room rates, average spend and visitor satisfaction – to name but a few. The only reliable data we have for 2013 so far has just been published by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) – visitor arrivals. For analysts of the Caribbean tourism industry, the CTO’s annual Visitor Arrival Statistics are an invaluable source of hard data on the performance of the Region as a whole, and its constituent parts.
