Sir Hilary Beckles, pro-vice-chancellor, University of the West Indies
Sir Hilary Beckles, pro-vice-chancellor, University of the West Indies

In the national waste paper, otherwise called ‘The Nation’, we see Hilary Beckles praising that ‘organization’ and more importantly reverting to a language from his previous life in an effort to achieve two competing and contradictory goals. First, Beckles is seeking to promote a reparations agenda which he feels will bring resources to institutions that pretend to act in the interest of the country/region. Secondly and on the down side, in his mind, by appearing to resort to a language of confrontation, Beckles may be seeking to somehow insulate himself from the collapse of the neo-liberal project which, with the aid of buddy Owen Arthur, he has greatly benefitted from, now that what he sees as his legacy is in great and mortal danger.

To put this artificial and renewed interest in Black empowerment, which Beckles now feels confident to mouth, it is necessary to locate his circular and convenient logic within its proper historical context. Beckles came back to the region some decades ago and located himself within a bureaucratic apparatus which was to give him certain protections. It was, and still is, an institution which suborns narratives about Black disenfranchisement, by people like Keith Hunte, as a lever for their personal advancement. So like Hunte, Beckles, in this most recent reincarnation in using the same idiom for personal advancement. This is a brazen initiative for self. Not even his mentor, Keith Hunte, came back to that narrative more than once.

That Hilary Beckles has the gall to now make reference to the ‘‘Mutual Affair’’, in public, after selling out his compatriots, actively refusing to recognize those events in his professional profile and by assigning the book that chronicled those events to a publisher’s death, must represent a grotesque socialpathic or sociopathic or psychopathic mind. A mind that is incapable of having a real sense of feeling for Black people, unless in pretense, when imposing itself on us as some though leader. We strenuously object. Beckles does not and should not have the moral authority to represent the sufferings of Black peoples after his most recent crimes against us.

When Beckles was taking money and land from White people in Barbados, a pittance, in whoever’s interests, it was then inconvenient for his to be a truth speaker. We vividly recall him like the proverbial Sambo and with a deceitful smile on his face taking money from Geoffrey Cave. Now that he has mustered a false courage to speak truth again we must wonder whether the well of White patronage has dried up. We must wonder whether it is now impossible to avoid a narrative that the whole local political-economic structure is at an end. We must wonder whether this new found interest for Black empowerment and Black economic citizenship is not about the narcissistic personality of Beckles. A narcissism will rooted within the Bajan elites.

Any gains made during The Mutual Affair were to be squandered in the service of the personal advancement of Beckles. For it was Beckles, as a careerist, who aided the corporatists at The Mutual, now Sagicor, to demutualize the organization. Thereby turning a company that was owned and controlled, ostensibly, by the policyholders of Barbados and the Caribbean, into the private fiefdom of elite corporate interests. This is the man who now comes with the unmitigated gall, after surrendering the most valuable ‘public’ asset to private hands preaching about the empowerment of Black people. Herein lies the Becklesian contradiction. Yes, your interest in Black enfranchisement must be limited to the likes of Harold Hoyte and Dodridge Miller and other Black elites. For you were never really interested in any real democracy or freedom that you could not control, benefit from or not of your own making.

Now that he has gotten the five million dollar a year for the so-called high performance centre, the buildings in Bridgetown and in Cave Hill, a number of acreages of land from various interests and the personal directorships on various boards, this traitor feels that it is now time to cuss White people again. We must ask what was happening for the last 15 to 20 years? It was the very Beckles, who witnessed Owen Arthur, close up, creating conditions in Barbados where questions of land reform, reparations, Black empowerment and income mal-distribution were left to deteriorate. In fact, thanks to his buddy Owen Arthur’s free market project for the commodification of land in Barbados land reform may now be an impossibility.

As a member of the boards of Sagicor, WICB(C) and LIME the ‘Black talk’ will not normally be encouraged and Beckles is no man well known to rock any boat unless some scheme is afoot. We suggest that the mask be stripped from this interloper as Chenwezi demanded. He has never earned and does not deserve the trust of the peoples of the Caribbean. As though using the playbook of Hunte, Beckles, ‘this big Black empowerment figure’ slavishly accepted a knighthood from a queen of the colonial power under the guise that it was really a Barbadian honour. He was not like the Great George Lamming who rightly told Sandiford where to put that dishonor which was improperly directed. So today we are to live with the irony that this miscreant could walk about here with a title stained with the blood of African peoples while, in a perfunctory fashion, shouting ‘Black enfranchisement’, ‘Black economic citizenship’. What is load of poooooooh!

Let us look to the radical legacies of John Cumberbatch, Leroy Harewood, Bussa, Glenroy Straughan and the other real heroic figures from our recent and not so recent history. People from the 1930 and the 1960’s and 1970’s who had a genuine commitment to empowerment of all dispossessed peoples. Down with Beckles the, consummate lackey!

  1. 1. Bush Tea asked “…and “education” is measured by the number and quality of degrees per unit of population?”
    Yes that is one measurement.
But it does not exclude this. In fact every single society has created families, churches, schools, colleges and universities precisely to teach and transmit “the process of learning what the important strategic objectives in life are; what talents and strengths one has; what weaknesses and challenges present barriers to achieving those strategic objectives; and intelligently crafting a lifestyle that seeks to utilize the strengths and to manage the weaknesses …while striving for success….”

  2. Dear Bushie: Some of us can teach our children/young people all they need to know. We can teach them English, Math, engineering, medicine, photography, art, clothing design. The rest of us are heavily dependent on schools, colleges and universities to help us teach our children.

  3. What do you want to bet that we have a higher “education” density than the countries that OWN all our businesses, our banks, our debt?

The DLP PM , who is to head this payments is looking to drag it out for 10 years , They already have the records of who to be paid (120,000), The CROOK government of Barbados wants every payments for self and might even look to pay off loans they stolen from to start ,

@everyone – I cannot take the time to read all the comments but what I must say is that Sir Hilary Beckles is a man to be admired, years ago when he alone took on the Demutualisation of The Mutual, the whole of Barbados was against him. I took it upon myself to really find out what he was trying to say and discovered that what he said made a lot of sense and if we black people had listened and supported him back then we would be in a far better position financially in this day. He is a mad of good foresight so leave him alone

  10. @Pretty Blue Eyes
Hilary did not take on the Mutual “alone”. He got a lot of backing form throughout the country. Hilary has never said anything that Don Blackman and all the gallant black nationalists said in the late 60’s and 70’s.

  11. @ Pretty Blue Eyes
oops should have read that Hilary has not said anything that Don Blackman and the and all the gallant Black nationalists did not say in the late 60’s and 70’s. Trevor Marshall has been like a voice crying in the wilderness while Hilary was in England. Hilary was or is just good media.Bobby Clarke and others have carried the torch far decades. I could go on and on but I will stop there for now. I know the foot soldiers who assisted Hilary with the Mutual Affair. Many of them are quite upset that he got/gets all the credit. The truth about that will be revealed in the fullness of time.Stay tuned.

  15. @Well Well, I thought that by now you folk would have understood what I stand for. Okay here goes.
    1. I can NEVER be a supporter or admirer of Rob Ford, in this life or after,so don’t put me in the category with Pat.
2I can never support corruption in Canada or Barbados or for that matter anywhere else. However, I am a realist and aware that as long as we have human beings some of them will be corrupt. Each of us has a responsibility to ensure that WE are not corrupt.
    3. I can never be in the camp with those who are critical of Sir Hilary. The desire to see a graduate of a higher school of education (University, Community college, SJP) or any institution that enables them to further their education is worthy of praise. Through education we as a people can only progress by eduating ourselves. Those who see no benefit in higher education are more guilty than those who try to denigrate those who struggle to achieve.
Contrary to what you say the Premier herself has said (yesterday) that she will not step in to deal with Ford unless she has the support of the Conservatives and the NDP in the legislature. The municipality unilaterally. the Council voted yesterday to take away many of the powers of the mayor. The thing goes from worse to worst.
@Bush Tea,..What do you mean “the school song of a certain school”? You fighten to tell the people that it is the school song of AYION if not just learning. In my day at secondary school, there were many people who just went to 7th standard at elementary school, but they continued their EDUCATION afterward by reading and learning as much as they could about as much as possible.@William Skinner, It does not matter whether
others were saying the same thing in the earlier years, the fact is that when he took part in the fight he was in the forefront so that cannot be taken away from him. I agree with Pretty Blue eyes; the whole of Barbados was against him, because he has the “nerve” go fight against the odds to build up the people. The Cave Hill campus snd its vision must be supported by all Barbadians who MUST be proud of what we have…A world class institution.

  16. Measuring and ascribing success to UWI, Cave Hill must be a moving evaluation which tracks Barbados’ ability to economically and socially sustain itself.

  17. @David,
The things are not equal, neither can they be judged by the same sandards. Barbados early in this centuary had the ability to “economically and socially sustain itself”, but we black people lived in slavery and later exptreme poverty. We had no UWI. And what exactly do you mean by “sustain” itself. does that mean not having to borrow any money to run our affairs? Even the mighty US has to borrow money through the issuance of Bonds etc. We may have to borrow, but we pay our bills, even if we have to do it with a tight belt.
Why are people like you so reluctant to seeand be proud of what we; a country of 166 square miles and 270,000 people have and are able to achieve?
BE PROUD OF BARBADOS AND SHOUT IT TO THE HILLS AND EVERYBODY WE MEET.

  18. The problem with you Alvin is that you believe that because others are constantly looking for new ways to earn a living brought about by a competitive global space that we are not proud of our achievements. It is what education teaches one who is educated; the need to reinvent oneself because of the urgency of now.

if those who had shares, life insurance policies etc in Mutual had educated themselves when Hilary was going all out for them, they would have made a killing too. i got my sweets but not as much as i would have gotten when hilary was trying to explain what Mutual was doing. thank God for him.

  21. Untrue!
Added by Emmanuel Joseph on November 15, 2013.

Sir Hilary Beckles is not telling the truth!

That is what Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler stated categorically this afternoon in response to Sir Hilary’s assertion on Wednesday that the Government had withdrawn, after agreeing to guarantee a $30 million loan from the then Barbados National Bank to construct three student dormitories at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies.

Sir Hilary had also said the country could have earned between $10 million and $15 million per year from the rental of these three buildings to international students. But Sinckler told Barbados TODAY that the files of the ministry had revealed that this pronouncement
    was untrue.

“Having read that file, I have satisfied myself that the Government of Barbados did not provide a guarantee for that project or intended to,” he insisted. “In fact, the instructions of the then Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, which were signed off on and agreed to by the late Prime Minister [David Thompson] who was the substantive Minister of Finance, was that a letter of comfort would be provided for the University of the West to borrow $31 million from Republic Bank to construct the dormitories, and I believe there were three of them,” Sinckler said.

“That letter of comfort, from what I have seen on the file, was issued. The letter of comfort, Senator [Darcy] Boyce had indicated, would be limited only to the construction phase, since the projects were being marketed, or promoted as revenue-generating, and therefore they could sustain the payments of loan.”

Sinckler observed that Senator Boyce’s instructions were crystal clear, that the proceeds in terms of the revenue earned, from the rents charged, should be assigned specifically to servicing the debt.

“And in that case, therefore, there was no need for a sovereign guarantee, and that’s really what the files said. So, for the principal to say that the Government agreed to provide a guarantee and then withdraw it, is technically not correct; it is not accurate,” the Cabinet minister argued.

Sinckler informed Barbados TODAY that he had since spoken with both the Minister of Education and Boyce “who was then the Minister of State, and they have both confirmed what the file says”.

He said he was not sure what happened that the university could not eventually get the 431 million eventually, “but I will have to investigate that”, sinckler promised.

  22. I wish I’d had a better understanding of the forces that drives the thought process of a great number of Barbadians. Because I cannot see how anyone could speak ill of the land of his or her birth, but I’ve realized that this is a common practice among a lot of Barbadians on some of the island’s threads. Which leads to ask this question: where is the Barbadian sense of nationalism that has come to definded the Jamaican? You can say whatever you wish about the Jamaican, but I can assure that you would never hear a Jamaican besmearing the national character of his island; even when the social, economic, and political situation has reached crisis conditions. call it escapism or whatever you choose, but in the enclave of negativity, the Jamaican always has a position word for his or her island.

  28. Whatever, the reality is that Beckles is right, education is the only deliverance for our society and has provided multitudes with a future that they would not have otherwise.

However, one thing IS true in the article above.

quote ”We must wonder whether it is now impossible to avoid a narrative that the whole local political-economic structure is at an end”

THAT is the real problem we have, our economy is in deep doo doo. Most of our Parliament representatives are generally accepted as incompetent (Beckles would make a much better Minister than some of the ‘occupants’ therein).

    So, a rocky road ahead.

A full Audit of the books and funds will show all for the pubic,

  30. Alvin, don’t be such a stick in the mud. Because you know as well as others do that Jamaica’s sense of nationalism far unmatched the rest of her Caribbean counterparts. I know this may come as a shock to you, but Jamaicans are better known for their work ethic in this part of the world. Then their propensity for criminal activity(!)

  31. @Mark Fenty,
What do you mean by calling me a “stick in the mud”? Wxactly what are you referring to? Of course I know of Jamaica’s propensity for a better work ethic. The difference between the outlook of the different peoples sis easy to discover. Barbadians have a good work ethic, but their tendency is to be more secure and take less chances. Barbadians put their funds in housing and working in a secure job (civil service; customs government jobs etc), buying a home and so on. Jamaicans tend to be more entrepreneurial; opening a little shop, producing things, importing agricultural products from their homeland and being extremely nationalistic. I admire these things. Bajans willl be more critical of their own; even their own country, and more admiring of others. This is our problem. Even if our people are right they are more ikely to say to, and in front of others, that our people are wrong.

  32. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/11/15/new-rob-ford-taiwanese-animation_n_4285463.html

Hilary Beckles, well his elevator doesn’t go all the way up – apparently. The same is applicable to Owen Arthur and the BLP group; their elevator doesn’t go all the way up. Don’t know, haven’t yet decided who gets the biggest laugh, Owen Arthur and the BLP group or Rob Ford.

Rob Ford embarrasses Toronto Ontario, Canada BIG TIME as does Owen Arthur and the BLP in Barbados

  33. Alvin, I do agree with your perspective on the average Barbadian outlook on life. But, I think that our lack of nationalistic awareness can be best understood in the broader social and historical condition in which we find ourselves as a people.

We have this little thing in Barbados called Classism, and it’s much more psychologically as well as emotionally demoralizing than racial – bigotry that the man of Afro West Indian descent encounter on a daily basis in North America.

You know, it is funny how some of us are still enveloped in this hierarchical / tribalistic way of viewing our world. Barbadians for the most part are divided on the basis of school of national reputation, esoteric – association and employment – stratification etc. This has always been, and continues to be the way in which we dealt and understood each other for the most part.

  34. “NOTHING SAYS IT BETTER THAN…..a certain school song”
Which English colonial headmaster composed this song Bushie?

  35. @Balance,
Major Noot did not have anything to do with the Cawmere School song. Further the words of that song, if learned and taken to heart, are the greatest character building words that any young person can follow:
    ” Up then,
Truest fame lies in high endeavour,
Play the game, keep the flame burning brightly ever…”

“Foes in plenty we shall meet,
    Hearts courageous scorn defeat,
So we press with eager feet,
Up and on, Up and on ,
    Ever onward to the fight,
    Ever upward to the light,
Ever true to God and Right, Up and on, Up and on.”

Why are , or do, “we” allow ourselves to be afected by Class consciousness? We have the ability to affect and effect our own future. What has calss got to do with it. Stop making excuses for our individual failings. We were born alone and will die alone. We determine our own future and where we function in society.

    Mighty undertaking here
Up and on , Up and on,”
