Adrian Loveridge – Owner of Peach & Quiet Hotel

There is sometimes so much misinformation disseminated in the media about tourism, it becomes even more important that the facts prevail. It’s official. Our neighbour, St. Lucia, overtook us for the first four months of this year, in terms of United States long stay visitor arrivals. Despite having a much smaller room stock, St. Lucia welcomed 43,335 American visitors between January and the end of April, an increase of 6.6 per cent, when compared with the same period in 2012. Barbados recorded 42,516 for the identical four months, a decline of 11.9 per cent.

The trend continues with the addition of a new weekly flight nonstop United Airlines service from Newark, adding another 3,000 plus seats during the second half of 2013. So there is little doubt that St. Lucia will still be ahead in this market, by year end. Newark Liberty Airport, offers for many, a more convenient access than JFK or La Guardia in the TriState area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. It is also United’s third largest hub after Houston and Chicago with the St. Lucia flight connecting with 22 US cities plus a number in Canada, increasing travel options and reducing overall journey times.

Americans have generally less paid holidays than Europeans, so it becomes even more critical to be able to reach the ultimate destination in the shortest time, if ‘we’ are serious about competing in this market. And this perhaps, partially explains why we have seen such a dramatic fall in US arrivals, having lost direct flights from Philadelphia, San Juan, Dallas/Fort Worth and Atlanta. If the journey takes too long, involves an overnight stay in one or both directions or has a protracted connection time in Miami or New York, savvy travellers switch to a more accessible vacation choice.

Another way that St. Lucia can substantially benefit is by tapping into the 52 million members of the second largest airline loyalty programme in the world, United MileagePlus. Every day United redeems 17,000 reward trips. For many years, I have been trying to persuade the policymakers to include a box on a revised landing card, to indicate if our guests used miles to reach us. To the best of my knowledge, no researched data is available to accurately gauge what percentage of our overall arrivals redeem their loyalty points on vacation travel. But from our own empirical evidence, we calculate it could be as high as 10 to 15 per cent.

The compelling reason for using miles, is that they break down the geographical cost differential, because the same number of miles are required, irrespective of the originating gateway within the Continental United States and Canada.

As a simple example. The lowest cost return flights from Chicago to St. Lucia booked online in August is US$886. MileagePlus members would apply 35,000 miles with US$85.40 payable in additional taxes.

From my own personal experience, I use miles to travel at least twice a year using points earned through my credit card with American AAdvantage. This, despite not having purchased a full price ticket with the airline for many years. By selectively using this method of bill settlement, this month I will have amassed one million miles since signing up for the loyalty programme.

  1. BTW, a simple Google ‘st.lucia tourism statistics 2013’ would have have landed you on the website.

  2. reading some of the comments on the ST.Luciawebsite gives a real insight of the antagonism and the division this article has generated among these two countries . What a pity….

@Miller, You ask:Why should I sycophantically support or blindly back a political administration that is riddled with liars and people of deceit
and hypocrisy all mired in incompetence?

Why then do you still support the BLP? A case of spiting up in the air?

  4. @ac, CCC and all others set in defence of the status quo, I see AdriAn as someone who is pointing out that other countries are doing better than Barbados in attracting tourists, in the vain hope that someone in Barbados will actually DO something to rectify the problem. A few postings by AdriAn will not cause a war between Barbados and St Lucia, because he doesn’t need to. St Lucia is used to backraising Barbados, in being among the first to break ranks on cruise ship port fees, and in “stealing” the winter yachting business from Barbados. As David correctly pointed out, it was not AdriAn who claimed that St Lucia tourism product was 30 years behind Barbados, and it is surely statements such as that which would cause some animosity. Even if the St Lucia economy is tanking, what has that got to do with the price of bread? The facts show that their share of the US and European tourism market is growing while figures for Barbados show the opposite. Finally, in all the years that I have been monitoring these blogs, I have seen AdriAn equally critical of both political parties when they are in government, when their singular lack of action requires it. If I have one criticism of him, it is that he must know that however correct he is, Bajans will not accept advice from a foreigner. An idea is not valid unless it is our idea.

He comes across as an island buffon cow-tonguing to those in the industry unable to speak for themselves

  7. @Anyone who cares to answer this question

You are running a business which is comprised of several units/divisions. The company is not performing well BUT there is one unit/division which is performing reasonably well compared to others in its peer group. Should the CEO not reward/praise that unit and importantly can’t’ the competition take best practices from the unit which is doing well despite the overall company struggling. Have tried to frame this scenario in simple language.

The two political parties in Bim still enjoy relative calm and leeway in all the crap and lies they do and tell, i hope it’s not for long because it can become a blight on the country.

Perhaps you would be taken seriously IF you were to ask Minister Sealy to apologize for the dumb statement he made about St.Lucia. In contrast the Minister of Tourism for St. Lucia was very mature and responsible with his response. Adrian has successfully run a hotel in Barbados for decades which has supported he and his family. In the mean time several sîmilar businesses have fallen by the way side.

There you go again, playing the race card again when you can’t get your way with an argument!
What was the need to refer to Adrian’s Caucasian ethnicity? Couldn’t you just refer to the man as a blasted liar or idiot if you felt that way about him?
It’s like referring to your other nemesis as a black Uncle Tom.
What colour is your Uncle Tommy Miller, Carson?

These are all manifestation of self-hatred of a mentally enslaved conflicted person who despises his perceived ugly exterior.
Why do you seek to compare yourself with whites? In you self-inflicted inferiority complex are you seeking validation from the likes of Adrian?

But what can we expect from a stupid racist like you, insecure black boy? But this is really being superfluously redundant by referring to you as both stupid and racist since they both always mean the same.

Instead of you continuing to pour more fuel on the tourism fire raging between Adrian and you guys or St. Lucia and Barbados why not let the facts speak for themselves?

Instead of playing the numbers game and one-upmanship by the Ministers of Tourism why not garner the views of the most important players in the back-and-forth game?

Let us hear the views and feed back from the visitors themselves.
Which destination is receiving more favourable feedback?
Which one is suffering from the more damaging comments about prices, quality of service, feeling of safety and security, attractions, entertainment and things to do and see and basically providing a more favourable overall impression of their vacation?

  22. @ac

Adrian’s articles have not fueled any of this, certainly not more than those of Minister Sealy. Some times blood letting is good anyway, let both sides be honest and proceed on ths basis. There has been this undercurrent of views in the region between the countries for years. Thoes who travel the region know this already. “Letter: Family rule, monopoly and political power!

    Dear Sir:

It never ceases to amaze me. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Saint Lucia seems doomed – in a legacy of seven times British and seven times French! In a land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!

Not too long ago the educated class tried to redeem a people from bondage and dependency but, alas, the remnants of the colonial past continually threaten to reclaim the enslavement of Saint Lucians. The sequence of events leading up to the UWP convention that witnessed Allen Chastanet hijacking the political leadership of the party speaks wonders.

A loser by all indications based on his record in government and business – a representation of the 1% that trickled the land with a sense of entitlement – a repository of the monopoly that witnessed the takeover of GL Foods by Consolidated Foods Limited (CFL), to control the supply chain and control the minds of the people, now seeking to take over the financial wellbeing of the people and return citizens yet aging to a period of family control of Saint Lucia.

What is most telling is that this is done with the help of men and women who expect to rise from their self inflicted house enslavement and the bondage of their mental state. This is appalling. While others that have served in government seek to rise out of the jaws of bankruptcy and unemployment through the promise of a job for the betrayal of the hand that lifted them from obscurity to the ray of light.

The results of the UWP convention is a reflection of a losers party with a political leader that must not be permitted to win an electoral seat in this country. This has to be priority number one. God is great! Now more that ever the results of the Taiwan’s funds will have to be answered! The use of the Soufriere Town Council funds to campaign in 2011 and the attempted return of family rule in Saint Lucia must be addressed.

The writing is on the wall. If these are not serious enough, then what is? If this is not the remaking of the élite environment, preparing a return of Saint Lucia to family and colonial control of the 17th and 18th century, then will the bright minds please explain?

I thought we had worn this battle through independence. But today this psychological battle continues with the help of political and economic acolytes seeking to protect their interest!

    Tori Fatal”

  34. Carson…….thanks for pointing out that all the black leaders in the Caribbean have the same mentality, they continue to keep themselves and their people tethered to a dead colonial past which the british themselves and descendants of former slave masters are trying to disassociate themselves from, the problems that are so glaring in the Caribbean lies squarely with the leaders and no one else, bad leadership as it relates to taking care of their own people exclusively breeds bad leadership. They don’t even want to change the archaic and antiquated laws left to them by their former masters, laws which their former masters have already changed to upgraded versions in their own countries. By the way, both parties DLP and BLP are also guilty of this crime among many other crimes against their own people.

  45. GP……..lots of tourists are going for all-inclusive, it makes them feel safer in the current environment, at this time everyone has to adapt and roll with the flow, no use looking at the other guy, at the end of the day most tourists would prefer St. Lucia, they get bang for their buck, US and/or Canadian would be at least $3 bucks in their EC currency and they have one of the most naturally beautiful scenic ambience in the world. Barbados has to try and improve on what they have and move forward. I personally heard one US tourist say he would drop everything in NY and move to St. Lucia, it’s unspoilt, some may want to call that being behind, but the tourists can get the same things they see in Bim where they came from, it’s a hard sell trying to get Soufriere mountains, sulfur springs and those beautiful rivers in NY or Canada.

    ADRIAN

When was the last time this happen in Barbados.

“‘Thought they would be murdered’: Canadians among cruise passengers robbed during St. Lucia excursion”

Four Canadians on a ground excursion during a Caribbean cruise thought they were going to be killed when four masked gunmen with homemade shotguns and pistols ambushed them in a lush botanical garden retreat, fellow passengers say.

About 60 tourists and three guides were systematically searched at gunpoint and robbed of their money, jewelry, cameras and cellphones on Friday.

They were then ordered to march forward, during which they feared they would be shot in the back, but instead the gunmen slipped away into the foliage behind a picturesque waterfall.

“None of those robbed were injured, apart from the trauma of the incident,” said Corporal Aniel Innocent, a spokeswoman for the Royal St. Lucia Police Force.
The victims were on a shore excursion from the cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse, which was anchored in the sheltered harbour of Castries, St. Lucia’s capital.

Cruise guests taking two shore excursions traveled together by bus for the one-hour trip down the coast to Soufrière, the old capital when the island was a French colony.

One group got out to see the mineral springs and gardens at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens while others pushed on to the twin volcanic peaks known as the Pitons.

It was inside the private, six-acre garden estate, which advertises itself as “a peaceful retreat from the outside world,” that the tour group was confronted at 12:45 p.m.

Shirley, a woman from Oregon who did not want her last name published, and her daughter were standing admiring the waterfalls when three masked men rushed out of the forest pointing guns at them.

The men rummaged through her pockets and bags, taking money.

“They were looking for gold,” she said. “They took the tour guide’s wedding ring. They then told [everyone] not to scream.”

The 13 tourists and three tour guides were held at bay with 12-gauge shotguns, made using repurposed bicycle frames, and commercial pistols; other gunmen then systematically searched through their pockets and bags, said Corp. Innocent.

Shirley and the others were told to keep walking towards the mineral pond, a pool once valued by French soldiers for its restorative powers. They thought they were destined to be shot and abandoned in the water, she said.

The gunmen then moved to another group of tourist and made the same demands.
Among those robbed were two unidentified Canadian couples, and British and American tourists.

One of the Canadians robbed told a fellow Canadian traveler that they too were terrified they would not leave the garden alive.

“My friend said it was so, so awful and she thought they were all going to be murdered,” said Nancy Cassie of Calgary.

Police searched the gardens without success although three men have now been arrested, she said.

On Saturday, police received a tip and arrested a man in Soufrière who has since confessed in a written statement to police that he was involved in the robbery, police said. US$105 was recovered.

On Monday, two others were arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Charges are expected to be laid, police said.

“We are thankful that none of our guests were injured in this unfortunate event and will continue to provide them any support they may need,” said Cynthia Martinez, a spokesman for Celebrity.

‘An act of crime should not be part of any vacation’
    .
“A vacation is supposed to be filled with fun, rejuvenation and relaxation. An act of crime should not be part of any vacation and we regret our guests had to experience those events.”

The Celebrity Eclipse has since left St. Lucia for its other ports of call on its 14-night Caribbean cruise that departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on April 6.

“I love the ocean but the real small islands are very poor and you are constantly asked for money,” said Ms. Cassie. “Very sad that their lives are begging.”

Canada is offering assistance to its victims.

“Canadian consular officials have been in direct contact with cruise ship representatives and stand ready to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens who are aboard the vessel,” said John Babcock, spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs.

AHEAD OF US IN CRIME AS WELL!!!!!

Carson, you can guarantee that same sentiment is also expressed by the tourists about Barbados. Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world, hand in hand with Trinidad, that does not stop tourists from flocking to either destination, Jamaica offers all-inclusive and Trinidad, while not too keen about or caring too much about tourism, offers an unforgettable experience and they are very respectful to visitors from around the world, including the Caribbean, it’s what you have to offer people for their money at this point.

“GAY ATLANTA MEN ATTACKED IN ST. LUCIA HATE CRIME”

    by Laura Douglas-Brown

“Michael Baker will never forget the last night of his recent vacation in St. Lucia. He recalls the sunset as the best yet of his trip, but what happened next may haunt him for the rest of his life.

Baker serves as director of advancement at Positive Impact, an Atlanta HIV agency. He was visiting St. Lucia, an island in the eastern Caribbean Sea, with his boyfriend, Nick Smith; the pair stayed with another friend from Atlanta, Todd Wiggins, at a mountain-top cottage Wiggins had rented. Wiggins has also been an HIV advocate, including helping found the AIDS Vaccine 200 bicycle fundraiser.

After enjoying the spectacular sunset, Baker and Smith went to the cabin’s tiny bathroom for a shower before starting to prepare dinner. It was about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2.

Within minutes, the three men would become victims of a robbery that Baker told the GA Voice he feels “very strongly” was motivated by anti-gay hate.

Baker recounted the harrowing ordeal in a Facebook note posted this morning:

I stepped under the water with Nick as he started to lather his hair.

Then I heard a scream I’ll never forget. “Oh my god, oh my god, no, no no!!! Stay in the bathroom!! OH MY GOD!”

It didn’t make sense… there had been bugs and creatures in and out of the house all week, how could Todd be freaked out by a bug? I went to the door and glanced out. Immediately, I saw a man all in black, his face covered in a tee shirt so I could only see his eyes, and the gun in his hand. We were going to die. I didn’t see, but knew there was more than one because someone was attacking Todd.

I closed the door hard, realized there was no lock, and pressed myself against the door as hard as I could, waiting for the bullet to come through the door. The door pushed back against me, hard. Then harder as another person began to shove. It opened far enough that I could see two faces, guns and hands pushing to get in. I shoved back as hard as I could, and it closed. I forgot there was no ceiling on the bathroom or the pantry on the other side of the mirror.

The men then climbed over the bathroom wall to get to them, Baker recalled. All three men were herded to the main room of the cottage, a combined dining room and kitchen. All three were brutally beaten and kicked by the men, who wielded guns and knives.

“They began to tell us that THEY HATED WHITE PEOPLE. They hated faggots. They asked where we were from. WE TOLD THEM THE UNITED STATES. They told us again HOW MUCH THEY HATED US,” Baker wrote in the Facebook note…..”

I am trying to remember which decade past something like this ever happened in Barbados!

    Hate crimes and all!

    Welcome to St. Lucia.
