In a discussion of slavery in Brazil and the “miserable state” of the enslaved, Froger talks about runaway slaves and the punishments they receive when captured.
The following translation appears in the 1698 English edition: “. . . if their masters once catch them, they give them no quarter; for they hang a great iron collar about their necks on each side whereof there are hooks, whereunto is fastened a stake or branch of a tree, with which they thrash them at pleasure. . . . But if it so happen that after this sort of chastisement they relapse again into the same fault, they . . . cut off one of their legs, nay, and sometimes hang them for an example, of terrour [sic] unto others . . ..
I knew one [slave master] in Martinico who being of a compassionate nature could not find in his heart to cut off his slave’s leg, who had run away four or five times, but to the end he might not again run the risqué of losing him altogether, he bethought of fastening a chain to his neck, which trailing down backwards catches up his leg behind, as may be seen by the cut [engraving]. And this, in the space of two or three years does so contract the nerves that it will be impossible for this slave to make use of his leg. And thus, without running the hazard of this unhappy wretch’s death, and without doing him any mischief, he thereby deprived him of the means to make his escape”

African American Had 340,000 Year Old DNA
DNA evidence has revealed that the oldest common male ancestor is 340,000 years old, more than twice as old as previous estimates.
New Scientist reports that the sample comes from a recently deceased man named Albert Perry. After the African-American South Carolina man died, one of his relatives submitted a sample of his DNA to a company called Family Tree DNA for analysis.
The findings were published in the The American Journal of Human Genetics and may require researchers to adjust the known timeline of humankinds evolution.
And the historical mark came at something of a bargainthe company does historical DNA analysis on individuals for about $150.
All previously compared DNA samples pointed to a common Y chromosome traced back to man who lived between 60,000 and 140,000 years ago. But Perrys DNA sample broke the trend, not matching up with this common ancestor.
“It’s a cool discovery,” Jon Wilkins of the Ronin Institute in Montclair, N.J., told New Scientist. “We geneticists have been looking at Y chromosomes about as long as we’ve been looking at anything. Changing where the root of the Y-chromosome tree is at this point is extremely surprising.”
After the initial tests on Perrys DNA, geneticists at the University of Arizona conducted further tests to confirm the anomaly. The Y chromosome in Perrys test matched up with those of 11 men who all lived in one village in Cameroon.
University of Arizona researcher Michael Hammer says Perrys DNA suggests there may have been an earlier species of humans that went extinctbut not before interbreeding with the more modern version of man.

The most disturbing news you will read today: four White teens in Joliet, IL have been accused of strangling two young Black men to death then heinously engaging in three-way sex on top of their dead bodies.
According to Patch.com, Adam M. Landerman, 19, Bethany L. Mckee, 18, Joshua F. Miner, 24, and Alisa R. Massaro, 18, invited both Terrance O. Rankins and Eric Glover over to a party which was said to be a lure to rob them of cash. The victims were then strangled to death; no rope or chord was used.
“I think you need to know that this is one of the most brutal, heinous, really upsetting things that [I’ve seen] in 27 years of law enforcement,” police chief Mike Trafton told Patch.com. “After the homicides were committed, they continued the party atmosphere, I guess I would say, without getting into it any further.”
According to court documents, Miner allegedly told authorities that his girlfriend Massaro fantasized about having sex with a copse and he wanted to fulfill her fantasy. So he tied the lifeless bodies of Rankins and Glover up in beige sheets so that they could lie atop them. Massara then engaged in sex with Miner and Landerman. Landerman is the son of Joliet Police Sgt. Julie Landerman.
All four suspects are currently being held in the Will County jail with a $10 million bond.
