The 2013 General Election is behind us and the analysis is  being processed by those interested to determine the factors which led to the final result. There is surprise that the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) ran a media campaign which was more effective in persuading voters. One DLP TV Ad capitalized on the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) blunder of introducing the privatization issue to the campaign. BLP supporters have accused the DLP that the Ad misrepresented their position.

There is the reality in Barbados that we have an ineffective media which is not sufficiently organized and respected to challenge fact from fiction which is spewed by political parties. There is no independent agency which the public can repose its confidence to get a credible view on issues disseminated by political parties during a campaign. The Ad was crafted to play on the fears of the public who rightly fear for their financial security in uncertain economic times.

Should Barbadians be concerned?

Howmuch Owen, Liz, Forde, Cheltleham, Mia.(not in her constituecy), Pain(emphasis on pain, why did someone had to go and cuss Sutherland for dissing out money. Why did Liz run into a house etc. etc.

  3. @ Alvin Cummins
In other words it was subsidised. Please therefore then tell me why a privately operated transport board could not allow OAP to travel free?

  4. @Alvin

u have sumed it up quite nicely. I woud have though by now that the vanquised would have accepted that it is time to move on and let us chart a path forward, but like they did in 2008. they have started to find reasons why the dlp will not survive. The lord is always on the people side, The amount of money that was spent against, Donville and Chris ,one would have thought the outcome would have been different, but these gentlmen won by increased margin.

  5. David not Bu
The DLP can afford to go back to the polls if Dr.Estwick does not want the Ministry.

You are on here talking about the DLP and one man while your party had to meet twice to select an Opposition leader in the absence of the outgoing opposition leader the second time around. If he was around the vote would have been 8-6.Now that is six men against the leader.
Where is the love between Owen and Mia? He would not even turn up to show some decency. He wanted Barbadians to again know that he is not supporting Mia Mottley to be the leader of anything.

Therefore going back to the polls is not something that you want. Barbadians would be even harsher on your party. The city would return along with St.Michael South East .Have you heard the rumour of a Man running off with Jeffrey Bostic $4000.00 and would not answer his cell phone. It is even felt that with hard work in St.Michael North that could have been won because Mia do not want that one Toppin anywhere near her.

I apologise. The truth tends to make us touchy. I’ll temper it next time.

Hypocrite – one who practices what he preaches against, or, one who condemns the action of a person but condones the same action by the other.

I deem you a hypocrite for condemning the BLP for vote buying, while not at least acknowledging that it was also practiced by the DLP and/or their surrogates.

There…..those are my cards laid flat on the table. Please clearly point out how I am hypocritical….if you can.

And to save you the trouble, if you claim that you have no concrete evidence of DLP vote buying, then be man enough to admit that you neither have for BLP…or at the very least, accept the words of US who saw and know as you would want us to accept yours.

Let’s rejoice in what was a peaceful election and hope that our leaders get it right…for our country’s sake.

    Just Observing

  7. David of BU.

Will you start a new post calling for FOI and Election reform to effectively stop the practice of buying votes.

Does it matter if I donate $ 1 million to a campaign knowing that my company will benefit favourably from Government contracts or that I am given $200 for a vote in a “secret” ballot.

This lotta long talk so far is just liquid bovine excrement.

Limit and publicize all campaign donations.

Make attempted buying and selling votes a criminal offense punishable by a minimum of six months in Jail.

    Thanks, TPP!

The journey of a 1,000 miles on the road to moral salvation begins with the first step.

Now make another so that the Light of Righteousness can shine for you to see the way.
Would you admit that the DLP committed a legally corrupt and morally wrong act by using a Transport Board bus and worker(s)- State owned and employed resources- to achieve its own narrow partisan electoral ends?
Do you agree with such actions? Do you still think that such illegal practices also undermine our democracy?
The voting buying scandal might be true back lacks hard evidence. The illegal abuse of State assets is clearly visible and can be easily substantiated.

We will be most surprised if you have the decency to respond to this prick of your conscience, if you do have one indeed.
If you don’t respond we can assume you have taken the PM’s advice and returned to the empty cane fields of morality where your mind is still enslaved and blinded by partisan myopia.

Would ur party had broken the Income Tax Act, even though Mr. Forde had warned that the moeny should have been taxed all along. Then again, owen is accustomed to breaking the law. No wonder Public Officers rejected him in large numbers the truth should set u free.

  11. @Clone

Interesting comment and one which BLPites will find hard to refute. Going in to another general election the DLP will have the advantage given the fact the Opposition voted along ‘tribal’ lines. In fact BU posted on Dale Marshall’s FB page why would they not have thrown their support behind the heir apparent?

  12. @Hants

I have said before, the state should set aside a sum for campaign financing and only that amount should be spent. No Ad can be placed by other than the party and there should be elction police out there where it is known that the vote buying occurs. I will go further and state that I will make voting compulsory and those not voting onreligous grounds will be exempted. if I sound like a dictator forgive me, but I think our forefathers fought to hard for the right to vote, only to be corrupted by interested parties.

  13. @Hants

Prime Minister Stuart admitted on national TV that he witnessed the illegal and undemocratic act of vote buying and he promised that he will use his office to review the laws.

All BU has to do is post it on the Fact Check page to act as a reminder. Remember Stuart has been placed on the pedestal of integrity so we have little doubt he will deliver!

Was the same lord on the people’s side from 1994 to 2007 or was he asleep and allowed OSA and the BLP to do as they liked? Just carry on the excellent work you claim to be doing since 2008 and outlined in your promises and performance report and your new manifesto. Just carry on smartly and stop the moaning. You will soon see broadside attacks coming your way for lying again to the people about the economy and privatization.

Right now many pensioners are receipt of more than the NIS pension. Some in receipt of private or personal pensions including RRSP’s. Moving the assessable threshold from $40, 000 to $50,000 was a way easing the burden of the COL for those on fixed pension incomes.

OK TPP, the electorate saw through the deception that the BLP under OSA tried to pull off and gave them a good resounding thrashing of 28-2.

We can understand and appreciate your wish to move on from this vote buying and dirty campaigning.
So let us move forward and hop on the Privatization & Layoff bus about to arrive at a bus stop near you. But before you board, pensioner or not, you have to pay the price and admit that the DLP engaged in an act of electoral corruption by commissioning the bus and its driver in a dastardly dirty act of deceit and lies to further its political ends.

But you know what, you can ride for free. Mentally disabled people always ride free on the buses, privatization or no privatization.

It was as if after the first people was issued a “steel donkey” had kicked him in the ars….s in the dead of night and issued him a warning to change the results fortwith or else. It really bogglesthe mind

  19. Most of these comments on this blog is exactly what is wrong with politics in Barbados, everyone trying to gain any political advantage they can by any means necessary. Just like the politicians, find an angle that benifits your politcal leaning and ride it to death.. Shame Shame Shame.
It is quite evident based on complaints from both sides that there was vote buying from both parties.
Yet the very partisan amongst us still look for any angle to make their party look innocent or less guilty. Instead of coming together and demanding that this is stamped out of politics or even threatening to video tape and attempts we may come across come next electio, we come to the blog to gain more partisan foot holds.
You wonder why politics in this country is going further down the drain every election, we are the problem, for a supposedly highly educated people we still have not learnt or refuse to come to terms with the fact that change will not happen unless we demand it, and that means setting aside partisan leanings.
But I guess for most of us, this is to great a sacrifice to make for our country.
I wonder if it is really the politicans who are the real vote buyers.

  20. @ac

UP TO THIS DAY. the pollster has not been able to explain why there was a need for a second pool, except to say there was a wooble, which he has not been able to explain to the populace.

Wickham methdology was nothing new, it was one he calimed that had withstood the test of time, so why would there be a wooble and as an experienced pollster he would have mave sure that the intergity of the poll was not compromised. And the only way it could have been compromised, is if the interviewers were mischievous in recording the replies. Then why would they want to do that if they are professionals. I have no dount that Peter;s intension was to confused barbadians, and for that he got a double wooble, having predicted that the blp would have won 20 seats. If he is as good as he says he is, why didnt he predict a land slide in Grenada.

I support davis’s call for banning polls 3 weeks before the elcetions, then no pollster could be accused of being bias. what we should ask if peter was a political advisor to the BLP and hence the strategy he used of attacking the PM was similar in approach to the BLP. If u raed his article of today, u will deduct that he has not given up. He has a lot to do to redeem himself, no wonder why Belle gad gotten rid of him from uwi..

The ad at the head of ths post speaks loudly to the fact that the DEMs would ignore any rule in their quest for victory. Apart from being involved in politics, the actor would have to obtain permission from the Governor-General to do the ad.

The DLP not only encouraged a public officer to breach the Public Service Act: they utterly disrespected the office of Governor-General. But some of you would be satisfied as long as the result was favourable.

You see why the miller is so adamantly strident in his dismissal of Freundel being a man of integrity?
Colluding to break the law in a flagrant manner is proof enough to impeach him on his claim to be decent and a man of integrity.
That is why the miller will never renege of his assertion about other private matters because he knows the truth from way back when you were a “lickle booy” in short pants going to Cawmere.

So you have the strongest numerical opposition in the history of independent Barbados even though talent wise, it is quite weak and you suggest that the BLP can make all the accusations in the world and we will not hold them to account.
Rubbish! The same opposition leader which you support was part of the BLP strategy team in 2008 and also an attorney who allowed a teacher to be used in a BLP ad but like the good yardfowl, you will conveniently ignore that and try to separate 2008 from 2013 because of who is in charge.
