Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart
Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart

Tonight is shaping up to be a victory for the people and for Barbados. I am pleasantly surprised and quietly proud. We have defied all polls, expectations and political/election stereotypes. BU has been a great conduit for it to begin. Let us move ever closer towards that much needed tipping point and let’s hope that those who lead us wake up and realise that this is a wake call to do better for all of us

– Observing(…)

A result which the most ardent of DLP and BLP supporter did not predict. Barbadians have witnessed a 16:14 result in favour of the Democratic Labour Party. The result also blew the Wickham CADRES model to smithereens, made all the more interesting that Wickham performed two polls leading up to the general election. BUs one regret is that even as the country faces unprecedented challenges – posed by the global economic landscape – we have a parliament which will struggle to do business given the result.

Here is an opportunity for earth changing decisions to be made to the current system. BU hopes the actors in  our democracy do not allow this moment to slip. This is a victory for Barbadians.

  1. To all those who thought there would be a landslide so they could benefit individually, I say you deserved what you got. The bitter pill will now be administered in the form of transparency, administered by the taxpayers.

  2. Perhaps now the big monies spent on an opposition leader will now be put to “actual” use

  3. Wickham really needs to pack his bags, how can you live in a community and be so out of touch.

  4. I am happy to see the pooch screwed back the ones who have been screwing them for decades.

  5. BTW “working together” means inviting members of the opposition to meetings of Cabinet. That does not happen in the Caribbean so please, be quiet on this working together foolishness.

Barat, my deepest sympathies to you …

  6. @ David …Like Clone I think you are being a little harsh.A celebration that is not yet even twelve hours old is nothing to be grumpy about. There will be time for sober reflection when heads will come together for the good of the country.

  7. BAF, we shall see – There are greater forces at work here, the recession is still in full swing and they have no control and will never have any control over it. The spot light is on them like never before.

  8. @Amused

Thanks for the defence but BU can handle the expected flack from the political hacks. They all forget so quickly that whether you side with BU or not they have the opportunity to post differing views with censor.

    @Yardbroom

BU in comment has already wished Stuart the best and hope he can lead a government which is participatory in every way but we have our doubt. He has his own mandate, let us see if he appoints Hal as AG and Estwick as MoF. He needs to fire Lowe and keep Inniss close.

  9. CONGRATS to the DLP!!!! They ran the superior campaign and won! The BLP must analyse why despite all the poll hype etc…they did not win. The fact is marketing is not about the fancy toys that you can use but using the definition as your guideline and doing the things that definition demands. That is where the DEMS were outstanding!! Let us now all pray for the entire 30 persons that have been elected that they may focus on the important things. I pray that GOD be their guide and that they do the things that please him. I also pray that they recognize things that they need to correct and correct those things.

  10. And i also maintain that DT was a winner asb i opreviuosly he had read the “TEA” leaves on appointing PM stuart as the leader and he was proven right…………………………………..another point of thought that if the gang of five was desimnated it would have pave thev way making it easier for mottley to be leader but fate as it might have been Could lead to internal fighting among the gang who still perceive MIA as a person that the bajan public would not fully endorse in perefance to one of them.

  12. @Caswell

Don’t agree with you. We have several issues at play here. BU tend to agree with Hartley Henry’s analysis.

  13. Congrats to Freundel.

He pulled it off despite several seeming missteps along the way. Lets hope that he will not take the election results as a mandate for him to operate as he did over the past 2.5 years, i.e. as a somewhat laid back PM, eschewing any attempt to monitor and control his Cabinet ministers and minimizing any contacts with the general public. I hope he recognizes that he got the luck of the draw this time and that he will have to change his style and involvement in several areas of governance to allow BARBADOS to get out of our economic morass and progress over the next 5 years.

There has to be a new Freundel. He has to control the exuberance and sharp edges of CS and help him to get proper economic advice. He needs new blood in his Economic adviser team. He has to interact more with the Business community. He needs to talk with us more. He needs to really demonstrate his proclaimed integrity by dealing with integrity issues proactively and not waiting for people to be sentenced by the law courts to take action, etc.

This election should see Owen Arthur giving up the mantle of Opposition leader. If the economic portents are real. It was an election that, from the point of view of the youngsters in the parties, might have been better for them to lose. The closeness of the seats should ensure that Mia will be up front in the next five years and the youngsters in the BLP will be able to develop an effective launching pad for winning the next elections.

The next 5 years will be interesting for UWI, the CLICO policyholders, business in general in the Island, Tourism, etc.

For all our sakes I wish Freundel well.

  14. As for Wickham he needs to take a quick analysis of himself asking the critical question “what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul.” since it is highly suspect that outside influences might have pressured him into redoing the poll a charge which he would obviously deny but one which would diminshed his credibilty in the minds of the people

  15. Caswell does talk so much shite, you should really give it up. This had nothing to do with Owen bigging up Mottley. You all spend to much time looking for national trends that don’t exist. The people in St.George south don’t care who or what the people in Ch Ch west want or like, and this is true across the country. Hartley said it best, this was about local needs and voters views of the two candidates in their constituencies. I called it correct 16/14 for the DLP only getting Suckoo-DLP,Todd-DLP , Edgehill-BLP, Atherly-BLP, incorrect.

  16. Stuart cannot fire anyone. He is one seat away from an ineffective government. If he upsets anyone he runs the risk of bringing his government into disrepute, and it is certain that the Bees will be looking to court one or two Dlpites to destablize Stuarts government.

  17. @Adrian

Are you saying Stuart has no choice but to leave the status quo?

  18. David tells us that Peter Wickham must reanalyze the way he reads polls.I would ask the simple question why would anyone want to hear from Mr.Wickham in his post as a pollster?Show me where his second poll reflected that this government would have secured the popular vote? Why should we not believe that a second poll was done all because the first reflected the true mood of the people? Is it not a fair assessment of Peter Wickham if Bajans see him as BOXHILL CHAPO 2013?
How many of us want to hear from CADRES anytime soon ?Perhaps that could be the next of Peter’s polls.

  19. After the celebration and hangovers, let’s hope both parties realize that there is more than a lot of work to do, the problems now plaguing the island did not go away last night. The problems have magnified.

  20. David wrote “we have to stop this being wedded to political parties”.

    How about my personal philosophy.

If you don’t like what the party you support is doing, join the party and work actively within the party to influence change for the better.

Cuss me all you want but I believe “politics of inclusion” and ” both working together” is a slippery slope to a One Party State.

Think about this. Owen Arthur chose NOT to contribute to debates in parliament instead of vigorously attacking the government at every session in parliament.
That could have contributed to the BLP to losing this election. Let us see if he does the same thing again.

Mia Mottley sounded very stateswomanlike last night.

  21. I keep telling them don’t be so quick to celebrate, this could turn into a really, really hot mess, that for the taxpayers sake, I am truly, truly happy to see.

  22. @Hamilton

The key difference between poll 1 and 2 was the approval rating of the leaders. Both polls had the BLP wining. Wickham obviously needs to tweak his model. Again polls should be banned 3 weeks before any election. In this case Wickham needs to determine his role in the Barbados space ie. political scientist, pollster, social commentator etc. He has been allowed to assume a ‘godlike’ spectre on all issues in Barbados.

  23. Now Wickham is just a spectre.

  24. @Hants

Do we have bipartisan committees approaches in other systems of government?

  25. @ checkit-out …sound and sober reflection.@ Caswell..let go of your personal grouse so that when Mia or Chris Sinckler make a misstep your post can be seen as credible.

  26. @Hamiltton

    What Arthur do you?…lol

  27. Congratulations to you Dems. It is your time to gloat, I give you that! The PM instead of addressing the nation and asking for healing, was so petty and vindictive! I pity Freundel!

Peter Wickham’s poll was right, the election was lost yesterday when the Dems’ plan worked. They rolled out the millions of dollars they got as kick backs and commissions and their plan worked. Peter cannot come out and say that the money the DLP gave away yesterday is what made the difference.

I sat in an office yesterday and calls keep coming in saying the DLP offered me this amount, you have to match that if you want my vote. In Scarborough, the boys waited for money before voting and the money came. This is where the BLP lost, remember a DLP yardfowl said that the Dems had the BNB money to blow, well, blow it they did.

I mourn today for my country!

  28. I must give it to George …by George he is a pain to the DEMS

  29. That was quite a few millions to blow, now how will the civil servants be paid for the next 5 years??? Oh, I forgot NIS money, the pensions.

  30. @Caswell Franklyn | February 22, 2013 at 8:36 AM |
“I maintain that the BLP was on course for a comfortable victory until Owen Arthur started to big up Mia Mottley on the campaign trail. And when that happened the electorate got fearful and started to move away from the BLP”

at no time did Owen ‘big up Mottley’ in fact he practically dismiss her and he allowed Noel lynch (glad that he lost) to disrespect her.

look at those votes and u will see that Mia is highly favoured and if Owen wanted to really win, he would have put Mia out front. his lost too bad..i am looking forward to the day when Mia would have the wisdom to know that she could form her own political party and sway the bright youths in this country to align with her. it is time for owen to step down, sorry he won

  31. I am looking at the brighter side of this, in other words, the taxpayers made sure they were properly well paid by the politicians to make sure that neither of these two parties got a landslide. I am sorry, but I love it!!!!

  32. Looks to me like the voters were the winners last night, they got paid and none of the parties got a landslide, politicians will now get as much misery as they will visit on taxpayers. I LOVE IT!!!!

  33. It seems now like at the end of the day everbody has advice for stuart.however STUART has demonstrated that he is capable of walking through landmines without being blown to bits and i can assure you that he has already worked out in his mind who the detractors are and how to deal with the boobytraps which would be put in his way.ALL this talk about partianship is just a joke OSA is a prime example over the past 5 years.

  34. @Peter Wickham

You approach is the best way, come out and face the music!

  35. For the PM it should really be straight forward and easy ,just do the people’s work and make sure it is done efficiently and transparently.

  36. @ac

You really need to understand that Stuart won a very marginal victory and your divisive rhetoric is exactly why Barbadians voted the way they did.

  37. @PRODIGAL!…………………….MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES. However not to be meaned sipirted i have sentyou a box of tissues.

  38. My problem with Owen Arthur has always been his penchant for suppression. In more ways than one this man represented a serious threat to free and fair journalism in Barbados. We had many situations where journalists were downright afraid to do their jobs all because of this man,and the fact that many at the top had already sacrificed their journalistic integrity at the altar of party politics.

  39. Boy Dennis mention we on Brass tacks. I like dat the “blogs” taking more prominence these days. To Peters chagrin, I might add.

  40. I am not ashamed of my associations lol @TK

  41. Let them know that the populace will not tolerate any little hitlers and mealy mouth dictators.

  42. Dennis, purely from a tourism perspective, what you you think the DLP being re-elected will change?
Sue Springer, the EVP of the BHTA recently commented on possible lay-offs and further hotel closures. We have ‘lost’ over 100,000 long stay visitors over the last five years and over 92,000 cruise ship passengers in 2012 alone.
As you know, I am neither D or B, but continue to have serious concerns over the current state of our tourism industry.

  43. I respect the decision of the electorate although disappointed with the final outcome because I have found nothing the DEMS did in the last 5 years to warrant a return to the old same.We shall have some interesting times in Parliament as these numbers will necessitate MP’s be around for passing legislation. There is every possibility of measures being defeated because head counts will matter.
I believe we will see Hal Gollop in the Senate and maybe a Parliamentary Secretary in the PM’s office but I don’t see him being appointed AG at this time.
There was no dissatisfaction with Brathwaite’s performance as far as I’m aware.
It would be of interest to see if Stuart assumes the role of Minister of Finance.

  44. @Adrian: we need a dynamic Minister of Tourism. Then we need a realistic overview [based on analysis and vision] of WHAT our product is; WHAT we want it to be; HOW we need to market it; to WHOM; and at WHAT rate. There are points of view that do not converge on WHERE our product is, or where it is going. Choice is everthing Adrian

  45. @Gabriel

Do you accept that the PM and AG positions are the two most senior position in our system of government? Do you accept that Adriel Brathwaite has the resume as a lawyer to satisfy the job?

  46. 16-14 will definitely be a page turner in the history of bajan politics.

  47. Denis,

totally agree and we seem to have made a lot of bad choices.

  48. or sometimes no choice at all, Adrian

  49. @Adrian

Should we bring someone from outside the house to be minister of tourism.

  50. In a tight seat count, you have to be careful not to annoy your coleagues
