Three months later a routine query from Peter Heimlich (the son of the man who created the Heimlich manoeuvre) remains outstanding. BU first highlighted this matter in a December, 07, 2012 blog – Asthma Study Conducted at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Questioned. Minister Donville Inniss is currently preparing to contest in a general election on Thursday, Peter Heimlich will likely have to wait a little longer for a response to his query about a medical study using the “Heimlich manoeuvre for asthma” conducted on 67 children.

Here is the letter sent by Peter Heimlich in response to an email request from the minister on Jan 5, 2013. BU wonders why a minister has to be so intimately involved in this matter. This is a routine request which one of the health administrators should have executed on weeks ago.

See a full report on this matter on Heimlich’s blog – The Sidebar.

  1. If you have the time to wait for a reply from Inniss, rest assured you will become very old and very grey and even then be lucky if you do get a reply. Besides, how does one answer a question like that, as far as I remember the Heimlich manoeuver should only be applied to someone in distress due to an object lodged in the asophagus or upper stomach in an attempt to dislodge that object so the person can breathe again. How will Inniss justify squeezing the chest of someone during a full blown asthma attack when that person already feels like a 10 ton truck is sitting on their chest due to their lungs being in distress and fully condtricted. I don’t think Inniss can slither away or explain away that travesty and down right idiocy, it does border on the criminal. (forgive the spelling, kinda early)

  2. Thanks to Barbados Underground for continuing to report this story.

    More here: http://medfraud.info/Barbados-study.html

The above link leads to a page on my website documenting my father’s dubious promotion (since 1996) of the Heimlich manoeuvre to stop asthma attacks, and the experiment which reportedly was conducted on dozens of Barbados children after a Cincinnati, Ohio hospital (with which my father was affiliated) refused him permission to conduct the study.

Re: my February 12, 2013 letter to Mr. Inniss, according to the December 16, 2012 Barbados Sunday Sun:

“In an email to this newspaper, (Dr. Anne St. John of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the study’s lead investigator) stated that the study did receive approval from the local Institutional Review Board (IRB)….”

The Sun article did not include the name of the IRB and, after months of inquiries, I’ve been unable to obtain the name of the IRB from Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Therefore, in my February 12, 2013 letter to Mr. Inniss, I asked him to provide me with the name of the IRB and who headed it.

I also asked Mr. Inniss if the study was approved by the Ministry of Health’s ethics committee and, if so, who headed that committee.

  3. And these asses actually consider themselves intellectual prizes and educated gifts to the taxpayers. They now have everything ass backwards and to the detriment of asthma sufferers.

  4. DAVID
WHY are you bringing this nonsense up again?
We have already made it lick that Peter Heimlich HAS NO AUTHORITY IN THIS WORLD OR THE NEXT TO REQUEST ANY REPORT ON THE CONDUCT OF ANY MEDICAL RESEARCH DONE IN BARBADOS OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE GLOBE.

  5. @Dr. GP

Answer this question: do you think Barbadians deserve to know the outcome of that study?

  6. @Well Well,

I am a chronic Asthma sufferer. If my doctor hand not found a combination of drugs that stop me from getting attacks I would not care what method was used to TRY TO HELP ME.

My mother was also chronically athsmatic and drank green tar and I was told lizard soup.It didn’t kill her but an athsma attack did.

Who cares about Heimlich? Let him sue if he has a patent.

David has a politically correct or (slanted) position.

  7. Wait….David you trying to add some variety to BU and a diversion from the Election debates.

  8. @Dr. GP

Answer this question: do you think Barbadians deserve to know the outcome of that study?
ARE BAJANS INTERESTED IN THE RESULTS OF ANY MEDICAL STUDY?
HOW MANY OF THE BU FAMILY TRY TO PARTICIPATE OR ASK QUESTIONS ON ANY MEDICAL TOPIC RAISED ON BU?

IF THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY WERE OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE DONT YOU THINK IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A HULLABALOO IN BIM.

ALSO THERE ARE PROPER PLACES FOR THE PUBLISHING OF MEDICAL STUDIES……….AND THESE DO NOT INCLUDE PLACATING HEMLICK

  9. @Doc GP

Note you have NOT answered the question so let BU rephrase.

Now that the matter has been raised BU wants to know the outcome of the study. BU may be defined as the BU household and NOT BU commenters.

    @Hants

The BU household has the capacity to discuss multiple issues at the same time.

  10. Dont know the answer DAVID lol
Why not give Anne a call. She is quite nice Sure she will give you an answer
I hope you understand my view about Hemlick and dictatorial Americans

  11. David I am well aware of the BU household’s ability to walk, chew gum, answer a phone call or write a note at the same time.lol

  12. @GP

It shouldn’t matter who raised the flag.

  13. David you can call the Minister’s office( from a a phone booth or pre paid cell….lol) and alert him to the concerns on BU.

  14. @Hants

Not necessary the minister and or his cohorts monitor BU 🙂

  15. Well the Minister and his cohorts should realise this is a serious matter of interest to a lot of Bajans.

  16. David
This is really a non issue

  17. I also read that they are doing studies on the increasing incidence of asthmatics in Barbados.

  18. HANTS
UWI staff attached to the hospital must do research and publish to keep their tenure; so research is always being done.MOST of this research is published in the West Indian Medical Journal, and presented in an annual conference. This will undoubtedly include work on asthma.

  19. @Doc GP

Relying on all of your experience should there be a problem accessing the info requested in this matter?

  20. Call Anne and ask David.
If the info has been published it should be in the Medical Library.

  21. I am also a chronic asthma sufferer and I don’t care who pioneered what, i would not won’t anyone squeezing my chest after it already feels like it’s being squeezed by the jaws of life. There is a reason why the University of Cincinatti refused to give permission for the study although the pioneer is world renowned. The intelligent thing to do would be to find out from the university why permission was not granted.I don’t have to tell you that you will not get information from ministry of health. You also have to ask why Barbados was chosen for the study and who was paid.

  22. When these questions are answered, then you can review and decide but knowing the level of corruption that is an epidemic within these two political parties, one has to be continually asking questions about everything concerning and affecting the taxpayers.
