The  opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) tried to pull a fast move on the DLP Government, but got trumped. The BLP managed to influence its support media Executive at Barbados Today, Roy Morris to pay CADRES to conduct a survey on the political climate in Barbados to date. Mind you, Roy is a strong supported of the BLP. According to the on-line paper, the survey was conducted between January 11th, 2013 and January 14th, 2013 in all 30 constituencies.

The survey was designed by CADRES Director, Peter W Wickham who has a gripe with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart over CBC not renewing his three-year contract with the broadcasting corporation. The PM is responsible for that entity.

The results of the survey were in Barbados Today’s Wednesday morning edition faster than you could blink. It was meant to give the BLP group of speakers meat to bash government at their planned mass political meeting at Heroes Square Wednesday Jan 16th 2013.  That meeting was to be held right outside the Senate Chambers which was meeting at the time and which actually ended debate about 8.30pm. There were no opposition members at that Senate debate since the total BLP MPs and Senators have boycotted both the Upper and Lower Chambers calling for general elections to be held.

Constitutionally the Parliament does not expire until midnight February 11th 2013 and general elections must be held within 90 days after. This was a skilful manoeuvre by the BLP strategists  but it backfired, leaving egg on their faces. The police refused permission for the event.

CADRES had asked respondents in the carefully crafted study by Peter, if they believed that elections were now overdue. Barbados Today explained that it should be noted that the phrase ‘overdue’ was preferred in this instance since the elections is clearly now due, and to ask about the election being “due” would have solicited an obvious response.

Peter also asked respondents if they believed that this was a good time to change the government. On what bases does he do?

This Republican Barbados Labour Party and detractors like Peter will get a rude awakening when general elections are held; what they expect will NOT happen. Just reflect on the US polling….OBAMA won hands down.

Well the PM need the full time to give out the VOTE for ME HOUSES.
Soon we will see on the TV and the Nations papers, the faces of people getting homes shut up for years , looking for them now to vote for him

  2. These little childish games being played by politicians do nothing to enhance the governance of this country. Pray tell me what delayed the Senate until 8:30 pm. The simple answer is they were filibustering to deny the BLP the opportunity to use Heroes Square for a public meeting because of its proximity to the precincts of Parliament. That was puerile. Why are they afraid to let the Opposition be heard.

This post actually made it on BU as an article?

No substance, no logic, no education, no stimulation just froth blowing in the wind of the $30 fan from S.Y. Adams? Sigh.

Dear Bryant: This is the whinny-est thing that I have read in decades. If this is the best the DLP and its supporters can do then wunna is a sorry lot.

You are getting really tiring. The old Bajans had a saying, if dont have anything to say, just shut up!

I cant believe that a man like you who claim to have more than your fair share of common sense would write something so foolish.

You dont have to keep singing for your supper like this all the time.

It is known in many circles that Barbados Today is on its last legs.

Investors are pulling out and ad revenues are flat. It is only a matter of time before tr collapses.

Roy is hoping that this poll would breathe a little life back into his dying organisation. That is the reason for this rush poll.

The real poll is coming soon and there will be no doubt who will be the winners and who will be losers.

I don’t think that I would waste time being offended by your remarks. Since 2005, I have not depended on politics or politicians for my living: I paddle my own canoe. Singing for what supper. I understand and appreciate your predicament where you find yourself unemployable when the BLP is in power. If you want to see someone who is singing for breakfast, lunch and supper just get a mirror. Don’t worry, I sympathise with your plight but never fear, if the Government changes, I have a job as an organiser with your name on it. Remember, Barrack Obama started out as a union organiser. Mind you, salary is based on commissions so you would have to do real work, not like what you are doing now.

  11. What is instructive is that those Caribbean countries that have run back to former Prime Ministers in the last year have seen no major benefits despite the many promises made by those leaders in opposition.A word of reality: There is no economic messiah out there and there are no tourists in England sitting down clamouring for an election. Get Real! The BLP is not the solution.

  12. For the BLP supporters with convenient amnesia :9million dollars for the St. Joseph Hospital Commission of Enquiry plus 2 million dollars for the Glendairy Prison Fire commission of Enquiry under the BLP versus 1/2 million dollars for the Alexandra School Commission of Enquiry under this Administration.
Do the mathematics. – BLP Hypocrites. Keep the BLP in opposition.

  13. wow you can almost smell the desperation on this article…..

  14. i can’t estimate numbers but i believe the crowd in Hero’s square tonight was MASSIVE. it would be nice to hear the official numbers on hand and online.

the rain fall and people ain’t move.

then the bombshell email from Peter Gilkes. you could hear a pin drop as Arthur read it out.

all that only means that Stuarty ain’t calling this election no time soon. His ass is grass and CCC, ac, ! could sing till the cows come home.

    the DEMs gone.

  15. I would also suggest that Peter Wickham’s creditabilty is totally destroyed with his biased questions and biased persons conducting the poll.
Take for example the poll recently conducted in the Pine when the lady who was conducting the poll for Wickham asked the resident if he was going to vote would he vote for B or D he said he votes for the D’s even when the B’s are in power so he is voting D whatever the person conducting the poll for Wickham then badgered him by telling him why would he vote DLP and not for a particular BLP candidate as their candidate was a nice person.

Please tell me this is not the way Wickham is conducting his surveys throughout as it is NOT the way polls are carried out, not at all and quite honestly his approach is flawed seriously flawed.

These vagabonds are the scum of the Earth
Would you believe that sick transvestite Muscle Mary Barny Lynch just called David Thompson a big nasty brute who is now in hell trying to manipulate the devil!

    So sad.,

  16. @David (not BU)

    What did the email say?

  17. @Hungry Crooks
What do you expect from Muscle Mary Lynch? The people in St. Michael South know that Barney Lynch is a fraud who abandoned them after he lost in the last election, said he finished with politics and then rush back when he did not get the big job overseas that he was hoping for. This is the Barney Lynch whose “World Cup Cruise ship” cost taxpayers to lose millions of dollars but the word is that while the taxpayers lost on the cruise ship deal,Barney was smiling all the way to the bank.

  18. Ann Reid from the Barbados Private Sector Association decided that the Association will release the result of a survey of “their members” coincidentally just before an election which said that government agencies owe the private sector 49 million dollars and they need this money for cash flow etc. The report obviously did not mention for long this money was outstanding or if any of this debt dated back to before 2008.
Chris Sinckler then last night had to remind the same association that government is owed over 200 million in vat,NIS,etc from the private sector.
If I owe you 200 million dollars, you think that I should be running around telling the world that you owe me 40. .

  19. What type of information can Polls find? The Polls can find out what people are thinking about important public questions. However, the questions must be what an impartial person would ask the public.
“The polls can keep the public in touch with important shifts in public opinion, it is said, and therefore in the shifts of forces which decide where the political, economic and social power lies in the country.”

An “impartial” Poll is not about directing public opinion, it is a fact-finding device, note I implied an “impartial designed poll.

I will not suggest here because Polls are now topical that the poll recently conducted was designed to deceive. . . I cannot be sure. My argument is from the questions asked, I would be reluctant to take the poll as reflecting the opinions of the general populace. It could be that regardless of the deficiencies inherent, it was able to capture some feelings of discontent but that discontentment should not be translated as figures based on factual evidence.
We must remember the saying: “Trust not the populace; the crowd is many-minded.” Phocylides, 560BC

The crowd in Heroes Square last night could not make 1,500 people, I know as I was there. The platform was absent of any vision or plan for the future.

The Commissioner of Police cancelled the meeting on Wednesday night at the request of the BLP given that Owen was sick and had been to see the doctor that day. A sickly prospective PM is a no-no so they had to come up with something, so they opted to turn a negative into a positive.

    Balkans so damn foolish.

  25. Muscle Mary Lynch aka the man that made the costly and financially disastrous decision to taxpayers of renting an empty cruise ship for Cricket World cup was in heroes square lamenting the decline in tourism. When last I checked the entire English speaking Caribbean was complaining about the lack of spend by tourists – Could it have anything to do with recession and sluggish growth in our source markets , higher ticket costs becasue of APD,lack of investment in hotel plant over the years, ? No – Muscle Mary wants intelligent Bajans to blame a DLP government . He should go next door to St. Lucia and see that almost every major tourism / real estate project in St. Lucia including the prestigious Landings is in receivership.Let common sense prevail Barney, Barbadians will not swallow your crap, musclehead!

Is this the same Lynch who said told all and sundry that he dun wid politics that he got a big job in America?

He got on an Airplane flew to America cooled his heels for a while then had to catch another airplane to fly back to Barbados. The American Government REFUSED TO GRANT HIM A WORK PERMIT.

Just imagine that, , A FORMER BLP MINISTER OF TOURISM with an inflated ego could not even get a work permit to work in America.

The he ran back down here with egg on his face and his tail between his legs, announcing that he running for a particular constituency. This is the same man who dun wid politics.

What is it that the American Government knows that we dont?

  27. @ David- I was showing the hypocrisy of the PSA statement, not the politics. A BLP MP told me a few weeks ago ,”You think that a government could be in power for 14 years and not have supporters strategically placed in every major organization”.
You see it in the BHTA, Family planning, Small Business Association,Chamber Of Commerce, Barbados Employers Confederation, the so called Consumers Organization, Barbados Association of Corporate shareholders, ICAB, Ed Bushell at BARP and countless others. People who when their “boy” or in the case of the SBA their “girl” in power turn a blind eye and complain privately but when their party is in opposition remain silent.
Politics is in every organization in BIM especially at this time.

  30. @!

This is a reality for the government given the implications with a general election upcoming. Think Sandiford, if the private sector is NOT with you it becomes an uphill battle. BU’s sense is that the private sector is with the Opposition.

  31. @ac

Nobody is overlooking the I don’t Knows. It has been explained in the methodology how the pollster has been able to use historical positions to make conclusions.

  32. @David- ” if the private sector is NOT with you it becomes an uphill battle.” True especially in campaign financing and spinning your mesage. The BLP is right now spending THOUSANDS of dollars weekly to TRY to sway public opinion even before an election date is announced. Obviously, somebody in the private sector is financing this and maybe some of the same individuals who are complaining about how bad business is. The BLP is pandering to many in this base by promising to increase consumption and provide millions in “incentives” and 500 million dollar tourism fund. This sounds enticing but at what cost? the BLP is not saying publicly is how will this be financed. The money has to come from somewhere.
Will it be at the expense of thousands of government employees being sent home?
However, I think many of the newer players in the private sector are realising that these are new times and the sell beach property to finance consumption model will not work in this environment. Many in the private sector in alternative energy and other areas support what this present government has been doing.
Some in the private sector understand what is happening globally and commend the efforts of this current administration but you are right that many of the old elite are BLP supporters at heart. That is why Christ Church West where many resided traditionally was such a tough nut for the Dems to crack despite the poor representation especially of Duguid and now Agard.

  33. @!

Going to the esoteric argument is fine but the job for the government is to win the message war. This is the key objective. It matter not what the BLP is doing and whether you think their strategy is wrong.

Do you understand what is involved to operationalize Integrity Legislation? An Integrity Commission has to be put in placed to manage the process. Those affected will have to be given time to submit their financial statements and close family. Do you think the government has the luxury of time to implement? You really need to understand the current reality which the government faces in a hostile environment. The DLP waited 4 years and now wants to rush these important pieces of legislation which should have been given priory to start with.

The BLP made an error by broaching privatization but many understand that something has to give, using NIS funds to bankroll current expenditure is not sustainable.

  38. BU’s sense is that the private sector is with the BLP.

Always has and always will be. From Plantation to Merchants the BLP is the party of massa and always get the majority of the elections bribe….sorry financing.

Unless the DLP promise a major freeness in their manifesto they will lose.

When I heard Mr Buffoon Sinkler pontificating about how much is owed to the Government and juxtaposing that with the 49 million owed by Govt to the PSA,I said if these guys think they can write off the PSA by that kind of stupid argument they have lost this election and they know it.It does not need explaining, the writing is on the wall.
As if that is not enough we hear the nonsense from Inniss yesterday prefaced by lots of if’s,another dead giveaway that they are losing it big time.

  40. @Gabriel

As a keen observer of the local politics it was indeed instructive to hear Innis ‘begging’ the DLP to defend its record. It is too late to be begging, they should be doing. Meanwhile the BLP has contracted RED and is doing the dog.

Don’t waste your time with Sinckler, he is only proving what I have been saying all along, and that is: he does not understand much. He is behaving as though the PSA is a single entity that owes all this money. He does not understand that the money is owed to individual companies that make up the PSA.

He is not seeking to recover any of the $25 million from Courts. Instead, they have now appealed and I am told that relevant documents are now missing from the file, so Courts might walk.

It was an error in strategy by the BLP. You need to calm down and understand the logic. The DLP will do the same if they are reelected because the current strategy is not working, it is a holding pattern. If the 167 million from the BNB divestment did not happen the forex would have dropped, again.

  47. quote from submission: “This Republican Barbados Labour Party and detractors like Peter will get a rude awakening when general elections are held; what they expect will NOT happen. Just reflect on the US polling….OBAMA won hands down.”

I have been waiting to hear someone “TRY” to draw a parallel between Obama’s Democratic party and the Barbados Democratic party.

The Obama Democratic party in the face of a global recession took tough and proactive steps often in the face of a sea of adversity from all sides to make sure the poor and middle class did not carry the full weight of what needed to happen by way of an economic recovery.

As the complete opposition, the Barbados DLP has for 5 years deployed a “LETS WAIT AND SEE” strategy which has Barbados’s poor and middle classes in a dismal economic state today. The DLP has compounded the impact of the global recession via a PM lead DLP recession of ideas on how to effective move Barbados forward and “NOT” on the backs of poor people.

We can’t as a nation afford 5 more years of poor PM leadership and an under-performing government on all fronts.
