Are you and your family on the wrong side of a bet?

When the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified (GM) crops into our environment and food supply, it was a gamble of unprecedented proportions. The health of all living things and all future generations were put at risk by an infant technology.

After two decades, physicians and scientists have uncovered a grave trend. The same serious health problems found in lab animals, livestock, and pets that have been fed GM foods are now on the rise in the US population. And when people and animals stop eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs), their health improves.

This seminal documentary provides compelling evidence to help explain the deteriorating health of Americans, especially among children, and offers a recipe for protecting ourselves and our future.

  1. We have GMO crops in our midst. We have GMO seeds being imported with impunity. We have GMO foods consumed here at an alarming rate – take flour, oats et al and how about the oil we used such as soya, sunflower, canola. Barbados daily is increasing its connection to GMO and we are not even aware of it.

Take GMO and pesticides…place in a wrap and enjoy the taste…’cause that is what we have.

The warnings have been out since I first began writing to BU about this problem (and no! I did not start this blog because I have actually gone through a period of ‘fed up’ ) and those in charge of overseeing what is brought into the island have not cared much…daily we hear of other countries banning these things but we do not worry about what is going on in other countries…the horror stories are up on the internet for all to see but we like to play blind. We have a huge health bill but want to blame cigarettes…we understand that health starts with food but we advocate imported apples filled with pesticide, in fact we allow imported fruits of all kinds also riddled with same to be sold in supermarkets and on the side of the road…and the list goes on.

I wonder often what it will take. God forbid but I can think of at least ten things without even having to make my brain work that could possibly happen that might suddenly have this little island wake up and smell the RoundUp but I would hate to write it on this blog in case it might come true! One can only urge the powers that be to stop, think and act before it is too late. We still have a chance. This is not a political cry in this silly season but a cry to save our people and our children. If people only took the time to study the problems encountered with food you just might realize that perhaps not just our normal health problems are due to what we are eating but our mental problems too, our problems within the society of youth having no direction, sudden increase of anger, children’s bad behaviour… and the list goes on.

So easy to insist that Barbados goes ‘clean’. We cannot even begin to think that we can go organic ’cause what we have destroyed in our soil and water, will take more than a few years to rectify…but we can go CLEAN. We can ban GMO. We can ban Monsanto & its killer pesticides. We can ban ALL pesticides in fact. We can use natural bugs and plants to rid our food crops of damaging bugs. We can become healthy slowly. With this comes so many savings it does not take a rocket scientist. We save on import bill. We save on health. We save our water. We save our soil. But that is not all.

Most importantly we get involved in real food security and we can boast in our tourism package that Barbados is ‘clean’…and for ‘foodies’ around the world this is an important factor…and no… one does not have to be a gourmand to be a ‘foodie’…rapidly the average visitor is a ‘foodie’ searching for health as well as wellness when coming to visit. Barbados would be the island that has done what others have not…yet…

DOES NOT TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST BUT THEN…..?

  2. Some Bajans will care more about what they eat than politics on movies. Is it not ironic we make a noise about the cost of drugs but have no problem with dealing with the cause of the ailments which require said medication? A bunch of educated people we are.

  3. Holding hands Rosemary on this one…….DDT’s MSG’s Cholo-Doxiltidre to name but a few poisoning man to the nth…a real “FRIGHT NIGHT”
but if we can’t even get Govt to plant lil corn or potato …how D hell we can look forward to this ask ? I see they advertise for a tractor driver at BADMC….Are the 5 John Deere green machines here?

  4. The neighbor’s son cross the road has autism. He ate KFZ and Cheddette a lot when he was a nino’. They say the chicken full of steroids and most probably the corn in the feed is GO altered. Now the poor little fellow like Apollo 13. He can’t remain quiet if you tied him.

  5. See below for another video documentary, Bitter Seeds related to the takeover of the cotton seed supply in India by Monsanto’s GM cotton seeds.

After Monsanto and its local partners (paying royalties to Monsanto) monopolised the cotton seed market in India the number of suicides among the peasant cotton farmers have skyrocketed. This relates to the fact that they are forced into buying Monsanto’s expensive, patented, GM seeds and the chemical pesticides and fertilizers that are necessary to allow them to grow. Their traditional low-cost or no-cost seeds are no longer available to the farmers. These would be seeds that were adaptable to local conditions and could be fertilized with cow dung, as one old farmer explained. Although they are growing Bt cotton which has the Bt protein produced in the plant to kill insect pests they still found it necessary to apply chemical pesticides against some varieties of plant pests.

Now the farmers have to go into debt to purchase Monsanto seeds and associated agro-chemicals, either with loans from banks or at exorbitant interest rates from money lenders if the banks won’t lend to them. If rains are scarce and yields are poor they are left unable to pay off the debt. The GM cotton plants are much more water dependent than the traditional cotton plants, so any droughts or rainfall shortages are more apt to damage the GM cotton plants. (As an aside, the GM corn grown extensively in the US now is also more water dependent than non GM corn.. This significantly exacerbated the effect of this years drought on the corn crop in the Mid West. I’ll try to find the information on this and post it later,)

The video gives a very interesting glimpse into life and customs (some of which we would see as backwards or at best “quaint”, e.g. arranged marriages, payment of wedding dowries from the brides’ families to the grooms’ families etc.) of the peasant farmers in rural India today and the effect that the switch from conventional to GM seeds is having on their lives.

Warning, the video is a bit slow to load. I have a 1Mbs connection and I finally decided to let it download overnight and watch it the next morning.

  6. Regarding the reference in my post above that GM crops are much more susceptible to harm from drought than non GM crops:

    Yet Another Reason GMOs Suck
    Eco Watch / News Analysis

The U.S. is suffering the worst drought in 50 years. But crop damage may well have been avoided if high quality non-GM (genetically modified) varieties were available to farmers. Further evidence is emerging that glyphosate-tolerant crops are ill-equipped to deal with drought, while high quality non-GM varieties are flourishing. Monopoly of the seed industry has left farmers unable to get non-GM varieties, despite the drought having global repercussions including steep rises of cereal prices and reduced meat production in many countries.

    snip

……………The non-GM varieties appear greener, fuller and healthier. These impressions are backed up by the far superior yield reported of non-GM corn, which averaged 100-120 bushels per acre (BPA) compared to the 8-12 BPA to 30-50 BPA of GM corn.

The large yield differential was confirmed in a new set of harvest data provided by Vlieger (with accompanying photographic identification) for three fields surrounding Verity Farm, all growing Smart Stack RR corn. All were harvested for corn silage as the yields were too poor to harvest the grain. The federal crop insurance adjuster appraised yields were respectively 12 bushels per acre (BPA), 27 BPA and 28 BPA. The Non-GMO corn on Verity Farm across the road yielded 108 BPA.

The findings were replicated with soybean crops.

  7. ha damned idiots trying to play GOD, as for me i still eating my ground food

  8. @Old Onions

The BLP has no credibility to speak on the issue of agriculture. In the boom years it was all about building out a service economy, period!

  9. David wrote “The BLP has no credibility to speak on the issue of agriculture.”

That is not entirely true David. They would not let some small farmers sub-divide and sell some of their land thereby preserving it for future agricultural use.
I hope Owen has a good memory.

  10. @ David
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Bushie watched that video….well worth the 90 minutes, even for a bushman who already knew 90% of the facts presented.

EVERY BU FAMILY MEMBER NEEDS TO WATCH IT!

  11. From the genetic roulette movie web site it looks like the free showing of the full documentary may only last until Oct 31, thanks to the generosity of some of their sponsors. After that there might be a small fee payable for a one time viewing of the video via streaming or you would have the option to buy the video on DVD.

So if you know anyone who you would like to have an opportunity to view the video for free, forward the link to them ASAP. Consider buying a DVD or two if you are in a position to do so and would like to support the producers of this video break through the censorship on these important issues by the profit driven, corporate media.

Here’s another video that has been available on Youtube for a while that covers much of the same ground:

GMO Ticking Time Bomb – Part 1

  12. In my last post above I referred to the profit driven corporate media’s self censorship re. reporting on the harmful effects that independent scientists have linked to genetically engineered seeds and their resultant crops. Here is an example of the type of economic pressure a large multi-national like Monsanto can apply to keep stories it doesn’t like from being aired over mainstream media sources.

Two investigative reporters for a Fox News station in Florida had prepared a report on Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone using various well documented sources to conclude that the product could lead to increased cancer risk in humans consuming dairy products from treated cows in addition to other harmful side effects. Just before they went to air with the report the station management put a hold on the program and then tried to kill it off and fire the two reporters in response to pressure from Monsanto, who just happened to be a fairly significant advertiser on the Fox News network.

It’s all explained in this video excerpt from the documentary The Corporation:

  13. I still ask the question…if all this information is available and new scientific date on the health problems caused by Monsanto’s GMOs and pesticides…why is our government not doing what is required here…BAN THE LOT…

  14. @Rosemary Parkinson,

Monsanto has been buying up seed supply companies worldwide and doing their best to take traditional non-GM seeds off the market leaving many farmers with no choice but to buy Monsanto’s GM seeds. This is what has happened to a large extent in India with their cotton seed supply as described in the Bitter Seeds documentary I linked above. I honestly don’t know how much this impacts Barbados at this point in time, i.e. whether or not we can still just as easily get non-GM corn seeds, for example, as we can Monsanto’s patented GM seeds for our farmers. .

However, beyond the issue of Monsanto’s increasing monopolization of the world’s seed supply there the fact remains that Barbados is an insignificant dot in the ocean while Monsanto and the other pushers of proprietary, patented bio-technology and genetic engineering are very rich, very powerful and are joined at the hip to the US government. Through their political contributions they bring the politicians onside and through the revolving door, (i;e. executives and personnel moving back and forth between companies like Monsanto and the US regulatory agencies like the FDA – just Google “Monsanto revolving door”) Monsanto’s policy becomes US government policy,

You can be sure when it comes to dealing with a pipsqueak upstart like Barbados, for example, who might appear to threaten to break away from the reservation and set a bad example by telling Monsanto that we don’t want their patented seeds and we don’t want to continually have to spend our scarce foreign exchange in payment of royalties to Monsanto for the privilege of dumping increasing quantities of Monsanto’s glyphosate laden Roundup herbicide on the land, a word from a Monsanto exec to some high level politician is all it takes for instructions to be passed to the State Department that Barbados be reminded that for our own “best interests” its best not to rock the Monsanto boat. E.g you want some funding to help with your fight in the war on drugs and cutting down the trade in illegal firearms; you want smooth sailing for the new IMF loan you want to take out to help build the new hospital, well act accordingly.. (Google Tales of an Economic Hit Man, if you have not heard of it before).

The US does talk a fine talk on “freedom” and “democracy” and the theoretical benefits of the capitalist, free enterprise system where consumers can freely chose between a range of different options as to which option they believe best suits their own needs. However, when freedom and democracy and consumer choice threaten the profits of powerful multinationals with political connections in Washington, sad to say, freedom and democracy are quickly pushed into the back seat.

Leaked: US to Start ‘Trade Wars’ with Nations Opposed to Monsanto, GMO Crops,/b>
    September 9, 2012
    Print Version

    Source: Anthony Gucciardi, NaturalSociety

The United States is threatening nations who oppose Monsanto’s genetically modified (GM) crops with military-style trade wars, according to information obtained and released by the organization WikiLeaks. Nations like France, which have moved to ban one of Monsanto’s GM corn varieties, were requested to be ‘penalized’ by the United States for opposing Monsanto and genetically modified foods. The information reveals just how deep Monsanto’s roots have penetrated key positions within the United States government, with the cables reporting that many U.S. diplomats work directly for Monsanto.

The WikiLeaks cable reveals that in late 2007, the United States ambassador to France and business partner to George W. Bush, Craig Stapleton, requested that the European Union along with particular nations that did not support GMO crops be penalized. Stapleton, who co-owned the Dallas/Fort Worth-based Texas Rangers baseball team with Bush in the 1990s, stated:

“Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU since this is a collective responsibility, but that also focuses in part on the worst culprits. The list should be measured rather than vicious and must be sustainable over the long term, since we should not expect an early victory. Moving to retaliation will make clear that the current path has real costs to EU interests and could help strengthen European pro-biotech voices.”

The Leaked Political Agenda Behind Monsanto’s GMO Crops

The ambassador plainly calls for ‘target retaliation’ against nations who are against using Monsanto’s genetically modified corn, admittedly linked to organ damage and environmental devastation. Amazingly, this is not an isolated case. In similar newly released cables, United States diplomats are found to have pushed GMO crops as a strategic government and commercial imperative. Furthermore, the U.S. specifically targeted advisers to the pope, due to the fact that many Catholic bishops and figureheads have openly denounced GMO crops. In fact, the Vatican has openly declared Monsanto’s GMO crops as a ‘new form of slavery’.

  15. It is a great hypocrisy that we are expected to manage domestic markets in a way that monitor concentration ie marketshare of business interest but in the global arena high concentration can take place.

  16. Green Monkey…I am glad that someone else had the guts to spill out the truth…I know it…have known it for a long time but I am considered a radical conspiracy theorist. The United States of America and its connection to Monsanto has a lot to answer for. I have asked enough questions. It is a wonder I am still alive. I have heard the most horrific stories about this company and their illegal actions…it cannot be legal to force chemicals on human beings and foods that have pesticides in their DNA…it cannot be legal to kill off people by stroking their health into oblivion…it cannot be legal to ‘supposedly’ own terrorists groups…but then…that’s ‘supposedly’ our big brother. ‘supposedly’ looking out for the interest of peace and love worldwide. I have been for so long shocked that humanity has reached such an insensitive way of dealing with life on this earth that I am now officially numb. May the Powers That Be of the Universe help us.
