Senator Dr. Frances Chandler

The attempt to plant houses at Lower Greys provoked several like-minded people to meet at the location to express disappointment with our land use policy.  BU reported on the meeting in the blog Future Trust Meeting At Boarded Hall. BU is pleased to share the speaking notes of Senator Dr. Frances Chandler who was a featured speaker at the meeting.

Let me start by saying that I am well aware that affordable housing is a priority for Barbados and have to commend the present administration for the noticeable increase in housing which has come about in the last four and a half years.

However, I will never agree with taking good agricultural land out of production to be put into housing. Once it goes into housing it is lost forever. And there is no need to do this. I drive around the country daily and I know there is enough non-arable land which could be used .

Also, if we are going to take land out, start with the dry coastal areas which present challenges to farmers-not the fertile lands of St George, St Thomas and so on. The land next to us which is about to be used for housing belongs to Hannays Plantation, one of the best managed and most successful plantations in the island.

  1. It is instructive that we have not had any comments on this very important subject so far. It just sums up where we are as priorities go.

  2. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

  3. @Kofi

Sadly Barbadians are about talk. Changed the topic of the blog to express a little frustration.

  4. Also if BU had highlighted Senator Chandler’s statement about Bajans needing to starve to understand the importance of safeguarding our arable land, well the debate would follow. A people get what they deserve.

  5. Why have all these Bajans on Facebook back and forth all day and show an unwillingness to rally for intelligent causes. What does it say about us? We are not there yet people. We do not know what we want.

“Why have all these Bajans on Facebook back and forth all day and show an unwillingness to rally for intelligent causes. What does it say about us? We are not there yet people. We do not know what we want.”

They will respond only when the foreign exchange well begins to run real low. The threat of not being able to import food as they are accustomed would force our hands before starvation starts staring us in the face and we have to depend on food aid to keep away the pangs.
But behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining. We might just be able to solve our obesity and NCD problems.

  7. David the wish to see people starve is not a view that many agree with or would wish to have thrust upon our people so however the comment is sheltered it cannot be sheltered from the fact that it was a most unfortunate comment coming from a Barbados Scholar .

Be that as it may let us move on and say that there much fuss over very little as in nearly every instance the lands assigned to housing are lands that were not suitable for farming and if she wants to speak of projects like Apes Hill so she can but bear in mind the as a plantation at its max they employed 30 persons now this same area is employing 400 persons every week and many more in construction on the property and earning many foreign dollars in Land Tax earnings to this island and enhancing the look and feel of this island.

  8. However you twist both parties have failed to deliver a coherent land use policy. Was shocked to hear Mia talk about the need to increase food supply. The rhetoric continues.

  9. Mia was all over te place like Pookna last night she was a little of this and a little of that with nothing that pulled her 4 hrs together of just one solid point.

The most outrageous must be going to the money tree and picking off $ 500 Mil to give to the hotel owners of this island to put into their election hopes.

When times were good these hotel owners bought homes around the world and beyond and stashed millions from tour operator payments in overseas bank accounts that never made it to these shores i suggest to the likes of the Odle’s and the Seale’s of the industry that the time is now right to repatriate those funds to our shores to help firm up your hotels the days of giveaways are long gone if you do not wish this govt t take care of the needs of the old folks how then do you wish for them to neglect the most needy in this society but give the hoteliers the multi millions you wish for to buy property in faraway places while our people here struggle ?

  10. What if it gets worse for 6 more years, like the Great Depression of 1929-1939?

  11. @ Achebe
    The question is:
What if it gets worse THAN the great depression of 1929-1939?

It matters NOT which political party wins or loses the coming elections. Neither one has the first clue of what it will take to turn things around. Remember the hype around the coming of Obama..?

“Any possible future now lie only in absolutely personal actions, by wise individuals – to work out their own salvation in fear and trembling.”

    Bushie, this sounds rather “nihilistic”.

Are you expecting the imminent return of the Nephilim, the Sirians or Yeshua?

  13. @ Miller
As you well know, ancient wisdom has been passed down to us in many different iterations. Is it not interesting? – the ominously common thread of ‘an end of a phase of life’ and a “return” of the masters?

You must also be well aware of the congruence of timings of many of the beliefs ….

Most notable must be the current anomalous situation where – in the face of the most wealthy, educated, talented, technically advanced and scientific human resources EVER available, we are heading downwards into an abyss of stagflation and hopelessness.

….when you see clouds gathering on the horizon, it does not take a bushman (nor Bushie suspects, an Annunaki) to expect rain….

  14. The Funny thing is that Bajans wouldn’t even know that they are starving in the first place…

Time for you to change your name….keep you offensive insults and shaft them !

  16. Did anyone hear leader of the opposition talking about food security at a constituency meeting yesterday? It must be the silly season.

  17. @David,
Maybe she has been reading BU.

Tell her to talk to Owen. Food security is in conflict with his concrete jungle philosophy.

If the BLP win the next election rest assured the backhoes will be digging foundations and the bannisters will be installed in the Nich ol time.
tsk.. spell check not working David. lol

  18. @Hants

Looks like we are not serious. Times have changed. The expectations of the public remains steeped in a past which was all about rampant consumer consumption.
