Tony Marshall sacked as Chairman of the NIS Board

Up to a few weeks ago retired banker Tony Marshall was the ‘man’ in Barbados. According to the Systematic Survey he was Starcom’s number one talk show host. Until his 2 year term expired as Chairman of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) last week, he occupied one of the most important positions in Barbados. BU agrees with George Payne MP who suggested in his contribution to the Estimates Debate that the NIS ranks in importance with the Central Bank of Barbados and the Barbados Electoral Boundaries Commission and therefore should operate with independence.  One wonders however if the statement was made based on ‘lodge’ loyalty.

So what happened?

A couple weeks ago Starcom’s David Ellis in response to a public query about Tony Marshall’s absence from hosting the talk show Brasstacks, explained that Tony Marshall will not be returning to the show. It is obvious any decision by Starcom to block its most popular talk show host from the airwaves must have been based on a ‘show-stopper’ issue. CEO of Starcom Vic Fernandes is a man who sees dollars first and Marshall’s absence from Brasstacks and its potential impact on advertising dollars would have weighed heavily in the decision to part ways.

So what happened?

To add to Marshall’s March Madness, Minister Byer-Suckoo announced last week that his term as Chairman of the NIS had expired and the government was not interested in renewing, no explanation was given for his ‘removal’. Any insight into how Marshall felt about the decision was gauged by his blunt reaction to Starcom’s Stetson Babb request for comment. It is known that Marshall is a DLP sympathizer who was rumoured to have been shortlisted to take up an overseas diplomatic posting which never materialized.

So what happened?

BU’s position regarding Marshall’s role as Chairman of the NIS is that he should have resigned given his involvement on the boards of CLICO companies. The role of the NIS is very important and any lack of confidence in NIS Board members was not healthy. The government would also be mindful of the political fallout which could arise from Marshall’s past association with CLICO.

There is also the NIS decision to invest in the Four Seasons after the Marshall led Board was summoned to Bay Street. Did Marshall try to exert a position which was contrary to that of government? If his term was not rolled over for reason of exercising the independence of the NIS Board this would contradict Ministers Sinckler and Byer-Suckoo protestations that the government has not sought to interfere with the decision making of the Board.

So what happened?

If the economic conditions were not challenging enough for the government, it now has a disgruntled Tony Marshall in the wings pondering his next move. Whether one agrees with Marshall or not there is no doubt he has a fan base and any utterances by him which place the government in a bad light is something it does not need at this time.

  1. @Hoisted seemed okay to me

The term is being used in its original form, a derivative from Shakespeare.

What was the annual fee paid to TM and other non-executive directors as members of the CLICO BOD?

Director’s Fees can range $1,000 to $1,500 monthly.

The million dollar question we all want answered, were the financials passed clean by the external auditors.

Dear Minister of Finance, Barbadians have a significant amount of cash, with the recent acquisition/majority acquisition of BS&T/LPH, and need additional investment opportunities. You need money to reduce the GOB debt. I suggest that you reorganize the ports (air and sea) into one corporate entity and sell 49%, retaining 51%, ownership to Barbadians (individuals and companies).

But would you look at what you are doing. Maligning a man’s character on a blog while hiding behind your anonimity. Did you ever approach him and express your concerns about his behaviour? But I have always found that to be a Bajan’s M.O.
    …………………………………………..
What is your problem? Are you Tony Marshall? How can you assume anything about me when you don’t know who I am? You’re a typical asshole.

  6. @Inkwell
Only a DLP supporter would believe the MOF, you and I know that he’s a blasted liar.
I do not know reason why Marshall’s contract was not renewed, but even if what you explained is the reason, I still don’t like the damn idiot.

“…. In the gleeful rush to gloat at Tony Marshall’s removal from the chair, has it occurred to anyone that his contract may not have been renewed as punishment because he took a principled stand against the investment of NIS funds in the Four Seasons project, thereby going against the government? And that he should praised rather than vilified? ”

The other side of this ‘principled’ position is integrity for the morality equation to make ethical sense.
Let Mr. Marshall do what he is good at. This time to call into to Brasstacks, not to call Avinash Persaud a naughty, boy but to give his side of the story.

After all, the little children have passed by on their way home from school and would like to hear the marshal with his ‘tony’ story.

  8. @ David

I am unclear exactly what your stance is. So it is ________ for someone to air a grievance in the public domain instead of first going through the proper channels because of the perceived problems of said channels?

Efficient or effective are not words I would use to fill that blank. Almost reminds me of the Alexandra dispute. By the way, you have to wait quite a long time in the queue before you get a chance to air your grievance on the call in programme. This makes sense?

Do people want to solve a problem or just complain?

  9. @ Zack
Look at your response. I am not debating if you are right or wrong because I do not know him, but you are saying some vicious things about the guy. Is this not a fact, regardless of if what you are saying is “true”? And that makes me the asshole?

There are civil ways to get a point across and I do not believe that is one of them.

  10. Why did the cloak of the ‘lodge’ not protect Marshall? Is it that the mythical power of the brotherhood is just that, a myth? Perhaps Marshall was tossed to the wolves?

    So what happened?

Marshall is a talker (remember Peter boos for example). The fact that he is not talking says it all. pick sense from nonsense. It’s cleanup time in little ole Bim.

  12. @When
When is The PM going to address the Alexandra STAGE II..teachers say they are fed up of the no action plan?
When is the Hon Bobby Morris doing to have a fishing agreement in place ? The fishermen say their are no longer risking their lives to supply bajans with flying fishes.
When is poor Mr.Barrack going to get his money ? He gets greyer each day and more and more frail…Is that the plan ?
When are the LIME workers woes going to be addressed ? They want their bit of the $Millions profits boasted by lime last year.
When are the poor CLICO policyholders going to receive their monies ?…more and more old people are dying each day needlessly ?
When is justice going to be served to LEBOY and Mona Lisa ?
When is the PM going to read the JM Report that cost $8.3 Million so far and showed the dead king’s involvement in money mis-appropiating ?
When is the PM going to acknowledge that the St.John sitting member cannot justly do so, if the Integrity Legislation is to be taken seriously ?

WHEN OH WHEN…will SOMETHING be done right BY this administration FOR ONCE…that Barbadians can hold their heads high once more..and not feel the HIGH COST of living pinches as well as the embarrassment and disgrace of this corrupted government.

“why are u so harsh on marshall, is it because he does not share the same political perspective as you, or is it a matter of envy.”…………

No, No, No my fellow blogger. I envy no man, never have, never will, it is not part of my DNA. He has what he has and I have what I would have like to achieve in life. I am content in life. I have no problem with people who do not share my political views, not every one can be a Bee neither can every one be a Dee. ac and ccc should appreciate this.

  14. The BU household congratulates Dr. Justin Robinson who has been elevated to Chairman of NIS Board to replace Tony Marshall. Best wishes are also extended to Wismar greaves who is a former Supervisor of Insurance and recently retired head of Insurance Corporation of Barbados (ICB).

‘No dispute’ Minister Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo. (FP) By Maria Bradshaw | Sun, March 18, 2012 – 12:09 AM
Former chairman of the National Insurance Board, Keith “Tony” Marshall, did not have a dispute with the Minister Responsible For Social Security Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo over the proposed $60 million investment by the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) in the beleaguered Four Seasons project.
Minister of Labour Byer-Suckoo strongly denied the allegation of a row yesterday as she maintained that Marshall’s contract had expired.
“Absolutely not!” she said of the charge. “There was never a dispute. His term expired – he served his term.”
She said she had had a “cordial relationship” with Marshall, a retired banker and prominent talk show host, for many years.

  15. @nicksti
I’m entitled to my opinion of Tony Marshall, and to make it known, whether you like it or not. And yes, you are an asshole since you’re taking issue with my opinion rather than voicing your own.

“The BU household congratulates Dr. Justin Robinson who has been elevated to Chairman of NIS Board to replace Tony Marshall.”

Maybe he took my advice and overthrew the fumbling marshall.

  17. There is more to this matter than what the minister said. How comes she said that she did not want to change horses in mid course and so the full board was told to hold their resignations but as soon as the contract expired, Phony Marshall is the only one chopped and the deputy was elevated.

Dr Justin, did you stab the marshall in his back? Wow the Dems are eating their own. ac, where are you, the Dems are self imploding.

  18. Tony Marshall was only one of the Board of Directors of Clico and Baico. I believe it is very opportune and good for Barbados and all Barbadians that the Government recognised that the circumstances required Mr Marshall’s contract as Chairman of our mega million NIS fund not to be renewed. HOWEVER: given the “infelicities” (if i may borrow Leslie Haynes Q.C. delicate terminology for money laundering) perhaps Haynes Q.C. can comment on the princple of collective governance and responsibility of any Board of Directors………..especially as Haynes Q.C. was Senior Counsel to the Boards of Clico and Baico……and perhaps the same legal gentleman can explain why he and the others resigned with such alacrity;
    sincerely……more, much more….. later!!

  19. I recall only to well…a call for one to be lucid and “Come clean.”….words that seems to have been for One Barbados….Oh the hypocrites we can be
