Minister Ronald Jones, Parliamentary Representative, Christ Church East Central.

THE Nation Publishing Co., in its edition of the Sunday Sun on December 11, 2011, published an article which purportedly carried contents of a letter written to the Prime Minister.

The Friday, December 16 edition of Barbados Today, an online newspaper, carried a letter which it states is a letter similar to that of the Sunday Sun’s version. Readers should bear in mind that the Sunday Sun embedded the contents of said letter in their story and wrapped it in parenthesis. So, in fact, the Sunday Sun has already published the contents of the said letter.

The only difference was the Nation warping its interpretation of the contents of the letter. They alluded to the MPs’ intention: “Their main reason for doing so was to discuss matters of grave concern” pertaining to his leadership and “to chart a path forward for the retention of our party in Government”.

The Nation emphatically stated this in the context of its story of Tuesday last. This differs somewhat from their initial quotation when the article stated that the MPs wanted the meeting, “with respect to perceived weaknesses in our leadership of the country”. This is a variation to that quoted above.

It is the Sunday Sun story of Sunday, December 11 that is of particular interest. The Nation reported that 11 MPs affixed their signatures to a letter and immediately dispatched it to the Prime Minister. The article states “ELEVEN GOVERNMENT MEMBERS of Parliament (MPs) – including seven senior Cabinet ministers – yesterday affixed their signatures to a formal letter and immediately dispatched it to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart requesting an ‘urgent’ audience.” That means that the Sunday Sun had to be aware that such was already done at least some time on Saturday, December 10 so that they would have included their article in the Sunday Sun with such authority.

The Nation subsequently published the faces of 11 MPs in its Tuesday edition, whom they asserted were the persons who affixed their signatures to this letter and dispatched it to the Prime Minister. The article states, “THEY ARE THE 11 dissatisfied Members of Parliament (MPs) who have been seeking an ‘urgent audience’ with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.

“They comprise eight ministers in the 19-member Cabinet and three backbenchers.
“Their main reason for doing so was to discuss matters of ‘grave concern’ pertaining to his leadership and ‘to chart a path forward for the retention of our party in Government’.”

This was a bold assertion. The Nation was emphatically stating that there were no other MPs who were implicated in signing such a letter. The Nation, by so doing, created an atmosphere in which 11 persons were exposed to intense public scrutiny and ridicule. The Nation Newspaper had no intention of stepping back from their position.

“Since the publication of the contents of a letter to this intent in the SUNDAY SUN, some of them have publicly denied any knowledge of the letter or any issues with Stuart, for that matter.”

In defence of their character and integrity, some persons immediately responded that they did not place their signatures on any letter and therefore the Nation should cease and desist from making such a statement.

The Nation, through its Editor-in-Chief, intimated that it would stick by its word – that is, that 11 MPs affixed their signatures to a letter which was dispatched to the PM.

The Nation further kept the charge going by asserting that it would keep publishing the faces of the persons in its daily publication until the 18th, when they would publish the letter. (One would believe that the letter would have 11 signatures affixed to it and not the mere mention of eleven names) If this is not done, then the Nation newspaper would have made a false accusation against the MPs – especially those who said they had not so done.

The Paper, as part of its continuing engagement of the reading public indicated in its article of Tuesday that they were sticking to their story, they wrote “However, the DAILY NATION is sticking to its story. The newspaper has further been informed that Stuart held private talks with individual members of the complaining group before leaving the island yesterday for New York.

Well-placed sources said while the leadership issue was not yet settled, it was likely that “common sense” would prevail and that the dialogue would continue internally.
Yesterday, one source close to Stuart further indicated that some of the 11, who came under intense public scrutiny following the publication of concerns, were now suffering from “cold feet” and had indicated to Stuart that they were not prepared to press him any further on a meeting to discuss his leadership style.

I am careful to note that the Nation continued to refer to his leadership style and that was not identified in either their quote from the letter of Sunday 11th or the Barbados Today story of Friday last.

Readers should not miss the point. The Nation made a claim. That Claim was in the Sunday Sun of December 11. We therefore await the publication of the Letter with the affixed signatures. A mere presentation of a letter, which they have already published, cannot do. They have already done that in their Sunday Sun of 11th December by inserting the paragraphs in parenthesis. These paragraphs are identical to the letter published in Barbados Today. Can we assume that the letter came from the same source?

I am also keen to note that The Nation Newspaper started to introduce a daily subtle shift in its statements by suggesting that the persons authorised their names to be attached to the letter. There is no more mention of signatures being affixed to the letter. That has disappeared. The Nation Newspaper is now proclaiming “The DAILY NATION will continue to publish all denials while holding on to the letter written on behalf of eight ministers and three backbenchers. Here, we reprint the photographs of the Eager Eleven as we will do every day until Sunday.”

On behalf of’ is the language used previously in the article of December 11. The Nation Newspaper has to deliver this earth shattering letter with the affixed signatures or they would have taken the standards of journalism to an all-time low.

  1. THE NATION OWES THE PUBLIC AN APOLOGY. NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN IN THE MANNER IN WHICH IT HAS BEEN HAD NOT FOR THE INCOMPETENCE OF THE NATION. THE NATION SHOULD HAVE WAITED FOR ALL THE SIGNATURES. A LEAKED LETTER WITH PROMISES OF ALL THE SIGNATURES TO COME!! PLEASE. WHEN IN DOUBT LEAVE OUT.

  2. @ GEORGE BRATHWAITE.
“Sapphire meeting is very real and the plot has not been foiled..”
Come on George, what do you really mean. Would you make that observation having read The Prince TWICE? If the PM’s response in todays Sunday Sun is anything to go by..the plotters WILL NOT GET A SECOND CHANCE…those fellows are dear already.

    @eagle eyed

I do not know why you like to come after me with distortions. First thing, I have read the Prince more than twice. I said that yesterday and went on to say that I have read Discourses on at least 2 occasions.
Now with that correction out of the way, which plan do you speak of, the one in which the PM said the party is still intact although he also said he was unaware of a letter reaching him or disharmony?
It is very obvious from what I wrote, that what was exposed is the mini plot within a larger plot. I am suggesting today that that plan has not been publicly exposed in the same way and it does exists. Do not ask me for any details, go and do your own investigations. There is more than meets the eye. The only success to date is to remove Sinckler as a contender; the kingmaker ensures that the throne awaits the coronation.

  4. @ Clone

How convenient for you to focus on the so called “gang of five” that plotted to get rid of Mia Mottley. Yet you have chosen to completely forget that gang plots to ousted opposition leaders started with the party you so “muscularly” defend.

Remember when the “gang of four” plotted to oust Mascoll, and in their zeal to do so, delivered their no confidence letter to the speaker of the house? Why was Mascoll removed as opposition leader, was it not to quench Thompson’s thirst for power?

There are so many ideological similarities between these political parties, why bother to try to defend one or the other.

  5. @Clone You position is slightly naive. The undermining of a PM in our style of politics must not be condoned by Stuart. It is regarded as a sign of weakness in a situation where Stuart has been labelled aloof, we can debate if this is real or perception. There must be bloodletting. The bloodletting serves two purposes, it sends a message I am in charge to the public at large and an even stronger message to those in the party.

  6. @GEORGE BRATHWAITE
I have to come back at you..what plan are you talking about? I said ” if the PM’S RESPONSE IN TODAY’S SUNDAY SUN IS ANYTHING TO GO BY…..” Man i did not speak of any plan.
Would you not agree with me, now that you have carefully read and considered my post that the plotters are dead?

  7. George C. Brathwaite Avatar

    @ Eagle eyed.

I am stating most emphatically that the sub or mini plot was exposed. The REAL plot still exists and it SHALL continue. Not your words, these are very much my words.

  8. Agree that the bigger story is yet untold.

  9. @David
The title of this post is misleading. Nothing about the letter’s air has been cleared. We still have

    – silent dissatisfaction with the PM from within the party
    – blatant public lies from at least two (2) senior members of parliament
    – piss poor knee jerk journalism without the decency of a clarification from the Nation
    – a MoF in bed with an editor who boldly and wilffully tarnished his entire party, political leader and PM
    – B’dos Today reporting that at least one MP confirmed signing the letter, yet nowhere do we see a letter with a signature
    – the diverging statements in B’dos Today and Sinckler’s interview
    – the obvious REAL RIFT that this has caused among the Parliamentary Group
    – No idea who’s fish from fowl and last but not least
    – at least one mutineer, two backstabbers, one Judas, three Pinocchios and a few yellow bellied cowards, all running the bloody government,

Stinks to high hell I say again. Swift, surgical, decisive action is needed. Anything less would be unacceptable.

  10. @Observing

It was BU using licese as far as the title is goes.

From his perspective he has outlined his position regarding the letter and the NATION’s handling of it.

You are correct that we have a bucket of issues here which is the point which Checkit-out and a few others continue to ignore.

  11. THe question being is Stuart going to go into an election with a dead weight attached to the Party ? He woud be foolish to do say. Chris already knows the consquences . THE public has already shown him the door Now it is up to Freundel to wave him goodbye. NO Political Party in their right mind would want to contend with such bagage that would take away from the pressing issues that affects people”s livelihood and allow an opposition who is also in disarray use it against them. That would be political suicide..

    You are so bang on!
The above sums up the state of political administration we have deciding the Country’s fate. With tsunami like economic challenges along with a disappointingly politicised civil service demotivated to the hilt and very unsure about its future poor Bim is in for a exceedingly rough time ahead.
Please God, shine your blessed light down and save this gem from losing its brilliance and fading glory!

  13. The Big Interview with Minister Chris Sinckler, one of the 11.

  14. Here is why Hants could not be PM.

Nationnews asks,”First of all, can you confirm that there was indeed a letter drafted on behalf of Government MPs who were seeking an “urgent audience” with the Prime Minister to discuss issues of leadership?

SINCKLER: YES, I can confirm that a draft letter exists; but

Hants same day, Sinckler you are fired, NEXT!!!!!!

  15. The question remains why write the PM a letter which is now the subject of all kinds of speculation? Why not request a meeting with the PM through other means e.g. telephone?

If Sinckler has an advisor who counseled him to proceed in this manner then he should fire that advisor, if he did it on his own accord he has an idiot for an advisor.

Politics is all about perception and his letter writing has possibly harmed the DLP more that it has helped them.

The Persian philosopher Omar Khyyam is not in vogue in Barbados but I will refer Sinckler to a verse in one f his poems:

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit,
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

  16. I am not into Bajan polittrics, but if Adrian is right and Freundel is not being returned to parliament, then this disaster has not been a disaster at all. If one reads between the lines of different posters, it seemsto me, that Hartley Henry may have orchestrated this imbroglio, to get rid of the front runner Sinckler, so his protegee, one Mara Thompson, can have a clear field to becoming leader of the DLP and next Prime Minister.

Bajans who think they are so smart, can’t see what is staring them in the face, wasting time on semantics. But then, me up here in kanada, and me brain cells probably suffering from cold. Uh gone……

If I were FS, after reading Chris’s responses in the Nation’s interview, I would keep him in the MoF to oversee the very soon coming IMF “austerity’ programme. Let CS be the real fall guy! Chris is very smart; some would even say too smart for his own good. He knows what’s ahead and don’t want to be tarnished with the label of the architect of massive economic restructuring and resulting social dislocation.
FS, you should keep CS’s hands to the fire for a while longer. Don’t sacrifice DR. D as a saviour to Chris. CS’s mouth is too big and his brains wired in the shape of a “bullshit” horn. Let him charge to the wooden fence, encase his horns and commit political “hari-kari” later on.

ronald jones could keep his disgraceful self quite. y did he not sought to clarify? y did he bluntly tried to insinuate that the Nation was lying? Chris Sinckler never said anything but was mature enough to admit what went on. what about stephen lashey and all the others who tried to deny it? pg 3A of the sunday sun shows a PM who’s hurt. he was explicit in stating that for the 4 years the DLP was in power, the BLP tried thru the Nation to portray them negativity, he went on to say that any SUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT to do the same could only come from within the party NOT the BLP. that statement shows the level of his hurt – in that the BLP were never successful but someone from within the DLP was in attempting do what the BLP could not do. the PM as i see it should remove RONALD JONES, STEVEN LASHLEY HAMMI, ADREIL BRATHWAITE, DONVILLE INNISS. they are dispensable but people like SINCKLER, THOMPSON he better leave them alone. those disgraceful old dogs make me sick. i am not partisan but i cannot stand
deceitful people. they have not place in his party. let them suck salt. then ronald jones have the gall to try to rectify his filthy lies cause he now understands how bad he and the others who tried to crucify the Nation look in the eyes of barbadians. not only that, he is trying to cover his back, i hope that those in his constituency take note and i hope that the PM not only takes note but get rid of the Judases in his court. i never admire the PM much. but to have deceitful people sitting and eating at ur table is a sad situation to be in

  23. The DLP as a politcal party needs to get to the truth of this fiasco.

The mind boggling (political) stupidity and naivete of some of these MP’s is shocking.

You have to separate Governing from politicking. Who is the political strategist that devised this plan?

1 year before an election and you want to engage in political destruction.

    First Sandi now Stuart.

  24. @Hants

Indeed, note Sinckler in the interview ruled out an informal request.

He also suggested that if the MPs felt it was so serious a matter they would have rasied at the weekly parliamentary group meeting which Stuart chairs.

It therefore begs the question why not raise this matter at such a meetinv if 11 of the 19 felt the way they did instead of airing their dirty laundry by taking the risk they did?

It is obvious from the letter writing this was meant to be a shot across the office of Stuart and possibly more.

It is also clear that one or more of the 11 intended to bail at the right time.

No bull no BS, let us keep it real.

  25. When the polls show a 4-6% swing where only 3% is needed to lose the next election, S&P downgrades the outlook to negative, unemployment increases, QE starts, SMI-Gate, Lagan, CLICO, Four Seasons and 3S what do you expect from an inexperienced government with an uninspiring leader? Sadly there is more s*** to hit the fan. God don’t like ugly.

  26. David I am inclined to believe that a single MP who is also a potential floor crosser has orchestrated this debacle.

  27. I was hoping for a 15/15 stalemate in the next election, but um looking like 28/2 BLP win with a Thompson and Kellman as the opposition again. wuh loss. Did I not speak to this possibly occurring?

  28. Hant, Hammie lah aint that smart or cunning; however, Freundel was not too entertaining of him so I can see why he would be a party to this foolishness.

  29. @Hants

Hmmm, well Arthur branded the politics of inclusion to good effect so anything is possible.

  30. @Adrian

As it stands it is not looking good, Stuart will have to marshall his team and work some magic.

  31. it is funny how person will hold the Nation to these high standard but the politician, not so much.

ask this question? did the PM meet the 11 one by one before leaving the island? in that question is all the answers.

what was Sinckler’s comments on the issue before today? so because he says the letter (which was never a letter) was not signed, we believe him?

how blind some of us are.

  32. Adrian I am not talking about a “lightweight” like Hammie La”,
I am talking about a minister.

  33. To david:
What I found interesting is that Stuart said he did not see the letter which could be interpreted to mean he did not even know of its existence, but yet he met a representative group from the group the Sunday before he left. He is seeking to give the impression that all of this going on around him. But yet Adriel Brathwaite told him that these meetings were happening. I believe this blow up saved Stuart. This group was very serious about taking him out.

Pray tell why so absolutely sure of Stuart’s defeat down by the Bay? Or are you referring to his ousting before the bell tolls???

    @David
The silence from the opposition is telling. Coupled with the silence from the usual critics (Boos, Hoyos, etc.) Only Francis risked a jab in the Business Authority today. Methinks the wagons are circling.

  38. Dont Panic Dont Panic. That advice has clearly been ignored. Some felt they could get away because of some childish and inane belief that there must be a signature for people to believe they were part of the plot.. The Judases believe that they could extract thirty peices of silver for their dastardly deed and smilled all the way to the bank. They are shameless andI I think the sooner they realise that they have done themelves a disservice they should do the descent thing. Can a person acting like those do the decent thing? I doubt it.these men should be so bold to ask people to trust them again. To trust them is to distrust yourself. Away from me your workers of iniquity . 41. The DLP still has a chance to prevent a “train wreck” next election.

Fire the ring leaders and replace them with backbenchers.

That is a gamble PM Stuart should take.

  48. I thought it was understood that Fruendel’s hold on St.Michael south was temporary; Indeed, the DLP’s hold on several St.Michael constituencies are temporary given the percentage win they registered. These are constituencies that vote primarily base on what the representative has been doing or not doing for them.

Mara Thompson is not now and never will be leadership material to the DLP and certainly not to the wider country. If the disaffection for the DLP -caused by the economy and now this display of disunity–, leads to a return of the DLP two safe seats only, Kellman will not stand down in deference to a neophyte like Mara, and he should not.

I said then and I say it now, Mara was as lousy a choice for the DLP St.John safe seat as Cinty Forde is and has been for the BLP St.Thomas safe seat.

  49. Why do ministers of a government need such a formal letter inorder to have a meeting with the PM/their leader????

It makes no sense!!!!! There must be more to this than meets the eye!!!!

Here are my 2 cents worth……I think Barbados is in much worst shape economically than has been communicated to the people.

I think the strategy is to get rid of the current PM, so that when the economic situation is brought to light, it can be blamed on the PM and with him out of the way, the DLP could then go into elections with a new slate….. having gotten rid of the ineffective PM.

With a new leader, skies the limit!!!!!!!!
