Submitted by email under the title Good Governance Barbados to local media

Dear 5th Estate,

The Small Business Association of Barbados is the most recent institution to demonstrate how poor corporate governance and regulation can be allowed to fester in Barbados.

Please see the attached. The SBA now finds itself in a situation where it is seemingly trying to cover (at a special meeting on Oct 25th 2011) its tracks after 25 years of operating illegally. In short it seems that none of the Boards of Directors since 1986 which managed the SBA were legitimate. That has implications for all of the decisions taken by those boards and importantly the legitimacy of all of those boards that managed government subventions etc.

Once again one is forced to ask how it was possible for the list of esteemed ladies and gentle that headed the SBA to have overlooked this.

Once again also and true to form one can expect this resolution to be easily passed by the 30-40 members (of the SBA’s over 700 members) who attend meetings.

It cannot be a simple matter of passing a one page resolution without a full understanding of how it was allowed to happen and thorough understanding of the implications.

Poor corporate governance is an issue for all of Barbados!

  1. What are we saying?

Millions of dollars years later and the best minds sitting on these boards and we are faced with this situation?

  2. It just goes to show that the whole lot of business wannabees pompasetting around Barbados are all cut from the same clothe. let me hear Sandra Husbands on this matter!!!!

  3. @ David

“best minds sitting on these boards…”
    LOL
Sometimes you are hilarious David….. Boards positions are mostly rewards given to political lackies for services rendered in brown- nosing….as you well know.

  4. wonder how much extra director fees was spent over the years.

  5. @BT

Are you suggesting political appointees are not capable of making a contribution? In this instance determining the number to sit based on the rules of the SBA? Should we blame the SBA like the BAS or government?

  6. What make what contribution what?!!

    Pick any board.
    List the members
    Review their history
    Review your question
    Tell us your conclusions

  7. I’ve done all that Bush Tea…

    Here are my conclusions.

    WE IN BARE TROUBLE!

We’ve got people at the top who have NO idea what they’re doing, while the population suffers for it! Plain & simple!

    Money isn’t class…OR sense!

This is very true in almost all aspects of Government agencies that have been put there to advise and help small businesses. It is amazing the ignorant SOBS they have in these organizations who walk around with their chest held up high in the air and know nothing. No one has to BALLS to point out to them that they know nothing about what they are doing. Many just repeat pass failures as if they have just invented them with the same results over and over again. Many of these consultants who are advising businesses have had no practical experience in the industry they are advising. They continue to take people overseas on business trips or people who can’t even produce for the local market or whose products are not up to scratch only to come back with absolutely nothing. They have given Barbados a very bad reputation of poor business ineptitude. They even have no SHAME and will continue to do it over and over again because they have the funds to spend.

  9. The SBA has suffered from the perception of political interference over the years.

  10. Wonder why the politicos on this blog have drifted from this submission?

  11. I asked someone “ What should I do to start a small business in Barbados? The response, “Buy a large business and wait” 🙂

  12. Sarge….LOL you are funny!
