In circumstances where some have seen the limits to all civilizations on earth and are seeking other places to inhabit, it may be helpful to reflect on the fundamental contributing factors that have led us to this point and to make rough assessments about some of the possible causative reasons we could be at this point. In this process we must, for a brief moment at least, make broad judgments about what is true and what is false within the tapestry of lies in which we live.
How many truths are there and what ends do they serve? What are the general behaviors of truths? Of course, central to this discussion must be the proposition that there is some kind of creative master planner directing all things or whether a firm reliance of science provides a better range of truths. As we polarize these issues we will, of course, ignore the postulations that some type of middle ground exists?
The leading Republican contenders for its party’s nomination proffer a Christian-Zionist fundamentalism that is not dissimilar to that espoused by the Taliban or the other Salafist elements of Islam. And yet ultra-conservative Christian dispensationalists are given the ‘respectability’ of being on corporate media, the generalized pretence that what they are saying is rooted in fact and a presumption that they are directed by some supernatural being whose existence is at best dubious and is not appreciated by the majority of their audience. It goes further than that. Globally, about one billion people call themselves Christians. Another one and a half billion people call themselves Muslims and the list of ‘faiths’ goes on and on.
But, why should we be persuaded by what these people are saying? Are the basic tenants of religion based on truths? Is there a functional difference between myth and lie? Are these just old lies told as part of some ancient and elaborate marketing scheme geared to control the minds of the masses of the peoples of the world and secure resources for the few? Why is it that the same people who argued for millennia that the earth was flat or that the earth was at the center of ‘the’ universe and after being proven wrong still have the temerity to insist on being all-knowing or representing some kind of all-knowing?
Why should Christians be forgiven for the persecution of Galileo and others who insisted on finding truths? How is it that we could find ourselves on a modern day crusade of Middle Eastern and North African countries against Muslims based on lies? These lies were promoted and sanctioned by George W Bush and the leading evangelical Christian pastors like Falwell, Roberts, Haggie, T.D Jakes, Franklyn Graham (the younger) and others. These criminals who live on the bones of the weak and the vulnerable also had they associates in Barbados who saw them as leading lights of their ‘faith’. They included, but were not limited to, Holmes Williams, Basil Yards, Cuke and others. Why should the peoples of the world continue to trust the purveyors of the untruths? Untruths emanating from books written with they own hand under the presumption of ‘divine’ inspiration when their fundamental precepts could be better explained and their alleged inspiration is no more profound than when one of their followers is called to the bathroom? What is sacred, sublime or beautiful about any of this?
We live in an age where science can properly explain a range of existential phenomena. It is also true that there are many, many questions still left to be explained. However, we now know and can scientifically explain the age of the universe and how it came into existence, the age of earth, the evolutionary path of life forms and much, much more. Of course the religious then make the rejoinder that their supernatural father controls matter, gravity, anti-gravity and space. Regardless of how truths are uncovered the religious constantly change the argument. In other circumstances and despite the preponderance of evidence to the contrary, Evangelical Christians continue with some of the old arguments. They insist that the earth is 6000 years old, that humans have been here for only 6000 years, they perniciously act in ways that, by their thinking, would usher in a series of events that could lead to the end of days. This backwardness is central to the thinking of Bachmann, Perry, Palin, Romney – the Mormon and others.
Of these Michele Bachmann is the true believer. She is a former student of an ultra right Christian University and represents a risk to all life forms. Palin, Perry and the others, like Bush, are not ‘true believers’ but are merely seeking to consolidate the Republican Christian right wing in hopes of winning a promotion in the American political kingdom – based on old and dangerous religious lies. The Manchurian candidate of the Democrats, Obama, can be counted upon to merely check the proverbial box to satisfy a false political requirement of religiosity. His real obeisance is lavishly paid to his earthly masters in the American corporatocracy and other global capitalists. This is the man who invoked the words of a famous American writer who determined that ‘we are the ones that we are waiting for’ and encouraged and promoted a messianic aura around him in the campaign for the presidency. So when most Bajans walk about saying how evangelical or how Christian they are, they should first find out what they are saying. Are we being controlled by a new wave of dangerous evangelical ignorance as a tool of the political elites?
