With average rainfall topping thirty year levels. We are seeing “floods” of water every where. Not all destructive, many of you have rain water harvested but feel it is not effectively utilized. It is surprising that an island that has no large bodies of surface water has invested very little in micro-level fresh water conservation.

All the necessary hardware components are available around the house or ultimately the store. Cheap water tanks, reused containers like bath tubs and pipe fittings combined with energy efficient water pumps have made post-industrial food production technology  affordable for the home owner.

The BVAA are the innovators of Aquaponics for the Barbadian socio-economical and cultural atmosphere. It will take 21868 1000 gallon systems to feed Bim.     Ready Done is a member of the BU familY who has been pushing the concept of Aquaponics as an option to assist with backyard farming in Barbados and beyond. Anything BU can do to assist in such a worthwhile venture we will not hesitate even if it means flexing our no-advertising rule.

    I am so appreciative of this post. As I have been very interested in this method as a viable source of fresh food production for a couple years now and eagerly want to integrate this in my home. It is very difficult for me to eat to the level of fresh and healthy foods I need, so I make do with the vegetables and fruits in the supermarket which sit there for some time, and those that are out of season I try to get frozen alternatives, as this is my main source of food, besides grains and seeds etc. Being a vegetarian I’m personally excited about this method.

    Lots of knowledgeable people have been interested in food security and looking to the internet to gather information about AP, more often than not they have found information based only on non-tropical climates and desperately lacking in local expertise. We have been running AP systems since 1999 and continue to this day.

    With the right size aquaponic(AP) system one can achieve a food secure household. And we are committed to providing the technical support required to these interested parties for the sake of all of Barbados.

    There is a life available minus the supermarket bill. However, cutting out the supermarket completely does not happen over night due to the changes in your eating habits that will have to occur.

    @ BD hot sauce, being vegetarian makes this transitional phase seamless, you raised a good point about grains witch I would like to address because this is a most interesting topic; AP allows for precise control over the plants root zone, the moisture level is tailored to the specific crop and nourishment is available on demand. There is no need for soil, enabling a variety of Non indigenous crops to be cultivated. We harvested the grains rice and the “super food” quinoi.

    The BVAA remains committed to enabling 30% Barbadian households to be food secure using primarily AP by 2020.

    @David. I have been saying this all along that if every household in Barbados along with the schools practice container gardening you would be surprised to see how this simple act can save us a lot of foreign exchange. Hydroponics is well suited for small island like Barbados that are challenged in terms of availabe productive farming real estate. I live in the greatest concrete jungle known as New york City, and I am able to , with the little backyard space I got, to plant enough vegetables ( tomatoes, sweet pepper, thyme, cucumber) during the spring to last me until November. A lot of people in Barbados feel that we are too rich and sophisicated to get our hands dirty. The statement that says, “those who feed you control you” is a truism to the core. Those who don’t take heed will learn the hard way.

    Could you please clarify the above, are you referring to in place non-potable roof or otherwise harvested water tanks?

    As long as you have 200gall or more, (like an old bath tub) we can help you build an AP system with that. If you have 1000+gal we would give you a special price!
