Muammar Qaddafi has a vision for Africa – a United States of Africa – with one government, one army and one currency. Of course, if this were to happen, it would shift the balance of power globally. The well documented fact is that if Africa stopped the flow of all African resources and raw materials to the western nations for just one week – the United States and Europe would grind to a halt – they are that dependent on Africa and are therefore determined to maintain their ability to control events on the continent. The Black Agenda Report

According to the ubiquitous Wikipedia, Israel is the only “established democracy” in the Middle East.  BU readily discloses that it is not a robust reference source  to satisfy the academics among us. BU did not even bother to check what exist in Africa; a continent known for countries preferring dictatorship style governments.

Understanding the underlying issues which feed the politics of the Middle East and Africa would be to compare to tiptoeing through a mine field in the heat of  a battle. What is known beyond a shadow of a doubt is to acknowledge the geopolitical considerations by the West which has shaped its foreign policy of that region. It is a region made important because of its mineral wealth, a valuable source of raw material for the industrialized West.

The decision by France to orchestrate a No-Fly Zone sanctioned by the United Nations on Libya brings several concerns to the fore. If one were to ask what is fair then it is reasonable to expect similar sanctions are in the offing for Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain and a few other countries in the region reported to be using heavy handed tactics against citizens in continuing unrest. Why the fury against  Col. Muammar Qaddafi?

To seek enlightenment on the many troubling issues which continue to trouble the Middle East and Africa, it is useless to follow the local media or local commentators. There appears to be a  willingness to surrender to one side of the argument influenced by a Westintoxitonian view. Frankly BU prefers to turn to the writings of a man like Gerald A. Perreira who has lived in Libya for many years. “He served in the Green March, an international battalion for the defence of the Libyan revolution and was an executive member of the World Mathaba based in Tripoli.”

In a startling revelation Perreira fingers the coalition forces fighting against Qaddafi’s forces in Libya of joining with al Qaeda. To give context to Perreira’s position readers may recall the report of the British recruiting al Qaeda groups in Libya to assassinate Qaddafi in 1996. There is a pre-existing relationship between the British and al Qaeda. Perreira also reminds his readers that “Muammar Qaddafi and the Libyan revolutionary forces were the first to issue an arrest warrant for Osama bin Laden. They have spent years trying to warn the world about the very serious threat posed by these Islamic deviants. According to Shayler, western intelligence turned a deaf ear to Libya’s warnings because they were actually working with the al Qaeda group inside Libya, to bring down Qaddafi and the Libyan revolution.”

Qaddafi has also made himself unpopular internally by calling for pale skinned Libyans to marry darker Africans. It seems ludicrous that the West would want to crush the Libyan revolution which has been comparatively successful in improving the quality of life for its citizens when compared to many countries in the region which are led by dictators or have monarchies installed.

It is decades now the West has been trying to solve the problems of the Middle East and Africa with no success. When will they learn?

Idealistically we in the Western world would wish for a democratic system as we practice it for Libya. We would want Libyans to enjoy the so-called freedoms we enjoy. However, wouldn’t we also wish attempts to lead change in that part of the world to be done free from the greed and hypocrisy practiced by Western governments?

Reality dictates that if the African Nations benefit from major Western demand for natural resources then those powerful nations will want to secure their supply, they have to choose up front cause the next WW will soon be fought over natural resources and food!

  8. “It is decades now the West has been trying to solve the problems of the Middle East and Africa with no success. When will they learn?”

    UTTER NON-SENSE!

The purpose of the west is to CREATE problems for the Africa and all other non-caucasoid nations. Without AFRICA, the west would still be knuckle-dragging.

Ghadaffi is loaded with gold about 150 mil tons and the filthy zionist Rothschild ‘jew’ pigs are more than eager to get their grimey hands on his gold. The west hates to see others living prosperously and not having to beg them for shite. They are vile, corrupt, despicable bunch. If the west would stay in their place and stay out of all non-western countries’ affairs you’d see a big difference. What happened in Libya with self-determination would happen in many other countries.

The west isn’t joining with al-qaeda, the WEST IS AL-QAEDA. There’s no difference between the CIA, FBI, MI5&6, MOSSAD & Al-Qaeda. They all work for the same master toward the same goal.

Ghadaffi, hold tight and don’t budge!

What about the USA hiring Blackwater operatives to do as they pleaseth in Iraq. It got so bad the matter was brought before the US Senate.

The following article reports covert operations to train the ‘rebels’ fighting against Qaddaffi.

US and Egyptian special forces have reportedly been offering covert armed training to rebel fighters in the battle for Libya, Al Jazeera has been told.

An unnamed rebel source related how he had undergone training in military techniques at a "secret facility" in eastern Libya.

He told our correspondent Laurence Lee, reporting from the rebel-stronghold of Benghazi, that he was sent to fire Katyusha rockets but was given a simple, unguided version of the rocket instead.

  10. The New Colonialism

By Paul Craig Roberts (formerly Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration)

April 01, 2011 “Information Clearing House” — What we are observing in Libya is the rebirth of colonialism. Only this time it is not individual European governments competing for empires and resources. The new colonialism operates under the cover of “the world community,” which means NATO and those countries that cooperate with it. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was once a defense alliance against a possible Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Today NATO provides European troops in behalf of American hegemony.

Washington pursues world hegemony under the guises of selective “humanitarian intervention” and “bringing freedom and democracy to oppressed peoples.” On an opportunistic basis, Washington targets countries for intervention that are not its “international partners.” Caught off guard, perhaps, by popular revolts in Tunisia and Egypt, there are some indications that Washington responded opportunistically and encouraged the uprising in Libya. Khalifa Hifter, a suspected Libyan CIA asset for the last 20 years, has gone back to Libya to head the rebel army.

Gaddafi got himself targeted by standing up to Western imperialism. He refused to be part of the US Africa Command. Gaddafi saw Washington’s scheme for what it is, a colonialist’s plan to divide and conquer.

    snip

Sixty-six years after the end of World War II and 20 years after the Collapse of the Soviet Union, the US still has an European Command, one of nine military commands and six regional commands.

No other country feels a need for a world military presence. Why does Washington think that it is a good allocation of scarce resources to devote $1.1 trillion annually to military and security “needs”? Is this a sign of Washington’s paranoia? Is it a sign that only Washington has enemies?
Or is it an indication that Washington assigns the highest value to empire and squanders taxpayers’ monies and the country’s credit-worthiness on military footprints, while millions of Americans lose their homes and their jobs?

Washington’s expensive failures in Iraq and Afghanistan have not tempered the empire ambition. Washington can continue to rely on the print and TV media to cover up its failures and to hide its agendas, but expensive failures will remain expensive failures. Sooner or later Washington will have to acknowledge that the pursuit of empire has bankrupted the country.

  13. Exposed: The US-Saudi Libya deal
    By Pepe Escobar

You invade Bahrain. We take out Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. This, in short, is the essence of a deal struck between the Barack Obama administration and the House of Saud. Two diplomatic sources at the United Nations independently confirmed that Washington, via Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, gave the go-ahead for Saudi Arabia to invade Bahrain and crush the pro-democracy movement in their neighbor in exchange for a “yes” vote by the Arab League for a no-fly zone over Libya – the main rationale that led to United Nations Security Council resolution 1973.

The revelation came from two different diplomats, a European and a member of the BRIC group, and was made separately to a US scholar and Asia Times Online. According to diplomatic protocol, their names cannot be disclosed. One of the diplomats said, “This is the reason why we could not support resolution 1973. We were arguing that Libya, Bahrain and Yemen were similar cases, and calling for a fact-finding mission. We maintain our official position that the resolution is not clear, and may be interpreted in a belligerent manner.”

As Asia Times Online has reported, a full Arab League endorsement of a no-fly zone is a myth. Of the 22 full members, only 11 were present at the voting. Six of them were Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, the US-supported club of Gulf kingdoms/sheikhdoms, of which Saudi Arabia is the top dog. Syria and Algeria were against it. Saudi Arabia only had to “seduce” three other members to get the vote.

Translation: only nine out of 22 members of the Arab League voted for the no-fly zone. The vote was essentially a House of Saud-led operation, with Arab League secretary general Amr Moussa keen to polish his CV with Washington with an eye to become the next Egyptian President.

Thus, in the beginning, there was the great 2011 Arab revolt. Then, inexorably, came the US-Saudi counter-revolution.

    Profiteers rejoice

Humanitarian imperialists will spin en masse this is a “conspiracy”, as they have been spinning the bombing of Libya prevented a hypothetical massacre in Benghazi. They will be defending the House of Saud – saying it acted to squash Iranian subversion in the Gulf; obviously R2P – “responsibility to protect” does not apply to people in Bahrain. They will be heavily promoting post-Gaddafi Libya as a new – oily – human rights Mecca, complete with US intelligence assets, black ops, special forces and dodgy contractors.

Whatever they say won’t alter the facts on the ground – the graphic results of the US-Saudi dirty dancing. Asia Times Online has already reported on who profits from the foreign intervention in Libya (see There’s no business like war business, March 30). Players include the Pentagon (via Africom), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Saudi Arabia, the Arab League’s Moussa, and Qatar. Add to the list the al-Khalifa dynasty in Bahrain, assorted weapons contractors, and the usual neo-liberal suspects eager to privatize everything in sight in the new Libya – even the water. And we’re not even talking about the Western vultures hovering over the Libyan oil and gas industry.

Exposed, above all, is the astonishing hypocrisy of the Obama administration, selling a crass geopolitical coup involving northern Africa and the Persian Gulf as a humanitarian operation. As for the fact of another US war on a Muslim nation, that’s just a “kinetic military action”.

  16. Of interest:

Bahraini authorities have banned Al-Wasat, the country’s main opposition newspaper, which has been critical of the government in its coverage of Shia-led protests quashed last month.

The newspaper did not publish on Sunday after a message on state TV saying Bahrain’s Information Ministry had ordered the paper to shut down.

The state-run Bahrain News Agency (BNA) says officials accuse Al-Wasat of "unethical" coverage of the Shia-led uprising against the country’s Sunni rulers.

The Kingdom’s Information Affairs Commission also referred the newspaper for investigation, BNA said.

  17. Obama to announce bid for re-election, sources say http://on.cnn.com/hhI9HB

  18. On one of the international news sites, there was a picture of two ‘rebels’ behind a truck, dressed in fatigues, observing movements.

One of the individuals was certainly no Arab, clearly light skinned caucasian, probably an ‘advisor’ Lol.

And indeed, the Nato countries have admitted that there are menmebers of special forces and special ‘secret services’ on the ground.

Does that sound like a home driven ‘rebellion’? Or an arranged coup?

    What a barrelfull of laughs.

  19. Further, the Nato forces have begged the US to keep A-6 and AC-130’s attack planes in Libya, on account that Nato does not have other resources to fight on the ground tanks and troop movements?

Was it a no-fly zone or troop fighting?

Sounds very familiar i.e. ‘weapons of mass destruction’.

‘No-fly zone’ has morphed nicely into. Even more, with on the ground agents, plus attack planes helping the ‘rebels’, surely the ‘rebels’ should have got further by now, or is the support for Gaddafi more than the Nato countries are admitting?

This ‘operation’ has probably done more damage to Middle East ‘democracy’ than anything else. Dont you think Iran et al are now going through an assessment of their military and opposition persons to eliminate potential threats, as a result?

But then, never was about ‘democracy’.

  20. @Cruso

The plot of the West has been exposed. They believed the no-fly zone would have crippled Gadhafi, it did not and now we have Royal Marine troops being dispatched.

Just like the Iraq invasion the goal posts are shifting and the people are being lied to.

It will be interesting how this war will affect Obama’s popularity where public opinion is against it.

Will he have the luck of GWB?

  21. The critical factor for Obama’s popularity will be tied to both financial drainage of the war and troop losses as a result.

Remember, GWB rode the tasils of a strong economic base, low deficit, left by Clinton.

Also, troop casualties were hidden by routing caskets via Canada, with restrictions on press footage.

Here Obama seems to be restricting support to ‘secret services and special forces’ which are not seen in any case.

But there has to be a financial cost.

In addition, there has just been a warning on Britain’s economic ‘recovery’ (sic), by one of the financial agencies.

Britain can ill afford a lengthy war committal, even as part of Nato.

Certainly the British citizen (they are somewhat generally more clever and insightful than their counterparts further west), have little tolerance for war and political rhetoric i.e. ‘xhit’.

One question, supposing Gaddafi asked and received (even if debatable), for assistance from such as Iran against ‘terrorists and rebels) within his country? It is his right as a sovereign leader to ask for help.

IF (yes a big IF) Iran agreed, then the only way Nato could spring this sis to have a lenghty, long drawn out war within Libya, possibly culminating in a full blown Middle Eastw war.

Without being antagonistic, nor cheering for sides, but from a purely analytical viewpoint, it may actually be in Iran’s interest to assist Gaddafi, as in all liklihood, Iran is next on the list.

Hence, stop the wave before it gets close to your own doorstep.

The question is, who has the palate for a lebgthy Libya war or a full blown Middle East war?

This is why I have said all along that this was a mistake.

But, who am I but a lowly plebian in society, with little to offer but meagre thoughts?

The only thing I have to offer is to say that when the ‘xhit’ hits the fan, we in Barbados had better be prepared…food etc.

    As the youngsters say nowadays…

    ‘Whatever……!!!’

Gaddafi ‘accepts’ AU plan to end fighting: Terms of "road map" proposed by African mission unclear, including wh… http://aje.me/gIErAj

  25. @David, sorry, did not see that ‘quote of the day’. Surely he was not talking about Libya, or does the gentleman drink and was it after 7pm on a lazy evening? Amazing!

On to something further. From cnn:

    http://edition.cnn.com/2011/US/04/14/gadhafi.op.ed/index.html?hpt=T2

”Because Gadhafi has lost the consent of his people, “any deal that leaves him in power would lead to further chaos and lawlessness,” it says. “We know from bitter experience what that would mean. Neither Europe, the region, or the world can afford a new safe haven for extremists.”

    ——

If the story is correct, this reported ‘joint statement’ is fraught with dangerous assumptions and statements.

Firstly, who says that Gaddafi has ‘lost the consent of his people’?

Rebels? Certain outside leaders? Does this mean that if there are riots in say, Paris, that the French Government shoudl immediately resign? I think not!

Secondly, Nato has not yet explained in clear terms what the role of ‘on the ground’ soldiers and sundry foreign forces, such as CIA , is, how long they have been there and what they are doing.

Further, if Gaddafi has lost the consent of his people, when will Nato move in Egypt, Syria to force Government change?

Then , looking at another issue.

””the United Nations and its members should help the Libyan people as they rebuild where Gadhafi has destroyed — to repair homes and hospitals, to restore basic utilities, and to assist Libyans as they develop the institutions to underpin a prosperous and open society.”

    —-

That Gaddafi destroyed, or the fighting caused by the ‘rebels? And will this be for free? Or will contractors from those same countries benefit as they did in Iraq?

Further, this is a dangerous precedent, siding with rebels, surely a Government has a right to defend the security of the country?

Lastly ” “We know from bitter experience what that would mean. Neither Europe, the region, or the world can afford a new safe haven for extremists.”

    —-

That is a laod of rubbish. With Gaddafi, a known enemy of al-Qaede, Libya was very stable.

Now, the door is open for any idiot or group, to wait in the wings and unleash.

As for a ‘safe haven for extremists’, how about allegations that Saudi Arabia is the biggest funder of extremist Islam, will the Nato countries put enmargoes on Saudi Arabia?

Further, will the ‘new Libya’ be stable, aka Afghanistan, where Karazi has told the Nato countries to bugger off and is himself reputedly talking to the Taliban?

I could be wrong, but I predict that this is the beginning of the end (albeit ‘started in Iraq’) for the Middle East ‘peace’, or what semblance existed prior.

All hell is going to break loose from this.

And it is going to impact the financial system worldwide, badly.

But then, some believe that is the plan, anyway.

    Whatever….

This comes as thousands Syrian protesters defiantly marched after weekly Muslim prayers, another showing of mass discontent toward the government.
    ———————

A reminder of the reasoning in Nato moving on Libya ‘Because Gadhafi (replace this with Syria)has lost the consent of his (its) people, “any deal that leaves him in power would lead to further chaos and lawlessness…from the statement read on behalf of Nato.

    ——————————–

Therefore, according to Nato’s stated guiding reasoning and objectives on Libya, they also now have a responsibility and necessity on moving into Syria!?

Plain and simple. When are they going to do so?

  31. Here is another more graphic report Crusoe.

  32. Reports from cn this morning that one of Gaddafi’s sons and three grandCHILDREN have been murdered in a Nato airstrike.

All that is needed for evil to happen is for good men to say nothing.

Can ANYONE, who is sane and responsible, support the murder of children???

This is awful, no different from the Nazi behaviours of the past.

Murder the innocent to get one’s way.

By the way, Syria continues to murder multiplies of its citizens….and not a word from the great NATO!

  33. My heart bleeds for these innocent children who lives are taken daily because of greed and imperalist opportunism.

  34. When non-Nato countries use bombs and civilians, whether men women or children are killed, it is called terrorism.

When Nato countries use bombs and innocent children are killed, it is called ‘war’ and ‘collateral damage’.

And the thing is, the world has been conditioned to accept this ludicrous scenario as the status quo, using the media as the conditioning agent.

Well, there is news, for those who would be ‘gods’.

    There is only one Almighty.

It has always been written, that what one sows…one reaps.

That is the way of the universe…no man can change that.

This is why, I would never take up a sword or any implement to fight for anyone.

There are better ways to deal with conflict, as MLK, Ghandi et al, showed us clearly.
