Re. the Barbados Building Code, Do we actually have one related to Earthquakes?

The current building code has earthquake prevention under the structural requirement of the code. In the section it refers the Caribbean Uniform Building Code. I am not sure if the old code or the revised code is place. The old code is report to be lacking some of modern evaluating technique that the revised code has. Though the latter call for stringent measure to ensure earthquake survival. So one the latter code if followed i don’t see any reason why they can’t build high rise building.

On the nuclear plant, Japan is one of the few places that builds properly to protect against quakes, because they get them so regularly.
The thing is, as I said, I doubt that our building codes define the flexed foundations to reduce quake damage.
Fixed & firm foundations, while they may protect for smaller quakes, are actually detrimental the higher the quake number i.e. no flex means cracking, even if steel is included.
Enough steel MAY give time to exit the building…possibly….but even then, the building will be effectively destroyed.
Only a few countries in the world build properly and specifically for quakes, Japan being one.
Unfortunately, the 8.9 may have outstripped their highest standards.

Huge shock absorbers, walls that slide and Teflon foundation pads that isolate buildings from the ground all help explain why medium- and high-rise structures in Japan remained standing in the wake of the country’s largest earthquake on record, construction experts said Friday.
The location of the earthquake, 80 miles offshore, might also explain why most of the structural damage reported appears to be from the tsunami that followed the quake rather than the shaking itself.
Since the devastating Kobe temblor in 1995, Japan has become a world leader in engineering new structures and retrofitting old ones to withstand violent shaking.
“The Japanese are at the forefront of seismic technology,” said Eduardo Kausel, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at MIT. “All modern structures have been designed for earthquakes.”
Strong Japanese building codes specify rules for short, medium and tall buildings, said Ron Hamburger, senior principal at the engineering firm Simpson Gumpertz and Heger in San Francisco.
New buildings shorter than three stories are required to have reinforced walls and foundation slabs of a certain thickness, meaning “there is not a whole lot of design to it,” Hamburger said.
Mid-rise buildings, those up to 100 feet, require much more-intensive engineering, while designs for high-rise structures often employ innovative earthquake-resistant designs that undergo rigorous review by the country’s top structural engineers.
The omnipresent threat of large quakes has turned shake-proof innovations into selling points for new high-rises, drawing higher rents, Hamburger added.
Mid-rise buildings such as hospitals and laboratories in Japan, as well as on the West Coast of the United States, often rest on huge rubber or fluid-filled shock absorbers.
While the shocks in your car bounce up and down, these larger absorbers slide side to side, quickly dissipating lateral motion and turning it into heat.
“They allow quite a bit of movement,” said James Martin, director of the World Institute for Disaster Risk Management at Virginia Tech.
Other shorter and mid-rise buildings rest on Teflon-coated pegs embedded in the foundation. The weight of the structure anchors the building on the pegs, but when the ground shifts the entire building slides over the smooth surfaces.
The problem with nuclear reactor isn’t really a design flaw but one of human error. There are two backup generators that are suppose to used to cool the coolant down if reactor is shutdown because of an earthquake. Both seem to out of operation. Normally at least one suppose to be operation. the lack of generator mean the there is no active cool system in reactor as such all the latent heat from the reactor is still super heating the coolant. This is causing a build up of pressure to core chamber and is what probably cause the explosion at the plant. So in the end doesn’t matter how well you design a system if it not followed.

A new report released today in the Kremlin prepared for Prime Minister Putin by the Institute of Physics of the Earth, in Moscow, is warning that the Americas are in danger of suffering a mega-quake of catastrophic proportions during the next fortnight (14 days) with a specific emphasis being placed on the United States, Mexico, Central America and South American west coast regions along with the New Madrid Fault Zone region.
This report further warns that catastrophic earthquakes in Asia and the sub-continent are, also, “more than likely to occur” with the 8.9 magnitude quake in Japan today being “one of at least 4 of this intensity” to occur during this same time period.
Raising the concerns of a mega-quake occurring, this report says, are the increasing subtle electromagnetic signals that are being detected in the Earth’s upper atmosphere over many regions of the World, with the most intense being over the US Western coastal and Midwest regions.
Important to note are that Russian and British scientists are at the forefront of predicting earthquakes based on these subtle electromagnetic signals and have joined in an effort to put satellites in space to detect more of them.
More ominously in this report are Russian scientists confirming the independent analysis of New Zealand mathematician and long-range weather forecaster, Ken Ring who predicted the deadly Christchurch quake and this week issued another warning of a quake to hit on or about March 20th.
Ring explains his methodology for predicting earthquakes as follows:
“The planets very much affect the earth, indirectly, by having an effect on the Sun. Some planets are very large. If the Sun was a basketball the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn would be the size of grapefruits, and the Earth would be, on that scale, the size of a peppercorn.
Jupiter and Saturn cause extra tides on the Sun when they get on either side of the Sun (as with Moon – Earth-Sun when the moon is full) and when these gas giants get on the same side as the Sun, (as with Earth -Moon – Sun when the moon is new). These greater solar tides become sunspot activity and solar flares and can be understood as akin to the increase in tides caused by the Moon when it too gets alongside Earth or opposite Earth.
At the moment we have Jupiter and Saturn on either side of the Sun and creating a tug of war with Earth in the middle. That started last September and will continue until about May. In September the Earth was right in line with Jupiter, Saturn and the Sun too.
That’s why there were several 7+ earthquakes around, it wasn’t just us. For instance there was one in Pakistan on the same day as Christchurch. This Jupiter/Saturn alignment continues until about May, and the Earth comes back into line as well in March. It is why there may be an extreme event, perhaps a large earthquake, around 20 March, which is when the Moon may be again in a trigger position.”
According to this report, however, where Ring is correct in assessing blame for our Earth’s earthquakes on the Sun and Planets, his substituting of Perigean Spring Tides (also known as King Tides) for the low pressure systems associated with them may be incorrect.
The mention in this report of massive low pressure systems being associated with catastrophic earthquakes is especially dire to the United States Midwestern region, which even today is continuing to be pounded by horrific rainfall amounts, and most especially impacting the New Madrid Fault Zone State of Arkansas which has suffered over 800 earthquakes in the past 6 months alone.
Equally in danger, this report continues, is the South American Nation of Bolivia which has, likewise, suffered catastrophic low pressure system storms that in the past week have killed over 52 people.
Most ominous in this report, though, is its warning that the fault-riddled State of California may be about to suffer its most catastrophic earthquake in decades as new reports for this region show the mass death of millions of fish [photo bottom left] is now occurring, and just like the mass stranding of whales on New Zealand beaches days prior to the February 22nd destruction of Christchurch.
Making the situation for our Planet even grimmer are the reports that our Sun is continuing to spew forth massive solar flares, the latest warned to hit our Earth today or tomorrow thus prompting the Hermanus Space Weather Warning Centre (SWWC) to issue a Solar Flare warning for the Southern Hemisphere.
Interesting to note in all of these events is the United States Army announcing this week that it is holding a rare training event involving the US Military, the CIA, Canadian officers, US Treasury and State departments, the US Agency for International Development, the Defense Threat Readiness Agency and the International Red Cross between March 21-25 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and which should the worst happen they will certainly be prepared for it.
As this report concludes, that as of yet, “no firmly reliable” method for predicting earthquakes has been scientifically recognized, it is well worth noting the too many to be ignored anomalous coincidences leading up to catastrophic mega-quakes are breaking out all over the World and should only be ignored at ones peril.
In other words, it is always best to be prepared should disaster strike, wherever the warning comes from.

I am not a seismologist-just a stupid believer of the Bible. However, I would not be surprised if there is increased seismic activity in our, or any region, because Jesus predicted in the Olivet Discourse that there would be an increased frequency of earthquakes ALONG WITH OTHER SPECIFIC EVENTS that would precede his second advent. Those of us who dont believe the Bible dont believe this and they scoff or laugh those of us who believe it to scorn.
Surely there is at least a 50% chance that we could be right, dont you think. Now I dont agree with the unbelievers, nor will I laugh and scoff at you………….because time will tell! Ah lie?

David and TMB; Thanks for putting up the background information on the Earthquakes in this thread. It makes it that much easier to do one’s own research on the matter.
Each one of us has to make up his / her own mind as to whether or not to believe the information presented by TMB. But what can someone in Barbados do to avoid the effects of a nearby Mega Earthquake? Taking precautions against an earthquake in an Island the size of Barbados is a far different cry to doing the same in Trinidad or Jamaica or even Cuba. I suspect that there are no or very very few Earthquake resistant buildings in Barbados and if there are who knows where they are located, so where does one run to here?
Where does one store the supplies that CH talks about? In the aftermath of a major earthquake or tsunami would those people with water tanks, generators, solar PV panels and the necessary batteries, stored food supplies, etc., be allowed to freely use these things in the midst of widespread destruction and general deprivation and hopelessness such as that seen in Haiti last year or last week in Japan?
West Africa, in many of the sources of apocalyptic literature, is often seen as being less affected by these mega earthquates or even meteor strikes than North America and Canada as being less affected than the USA. Check the various disaster maps produced by these groups ranging from the end of the world sects to astrophysicists. How many of us will be able to flee to safe havens in Africa or Canada?
Is the concept of a disaster kit in the US the same as one for Barbados in the face of a tsunami or a mega earthquake?
The pictures of the tsunami coming out of Japan were indeed very frightening. Besides praying and stocking up on a constant basis with emergency supplies, since there is usually very little or no warning for this type of emergency, what can the typical Bajan reasonably do in this regard in Barbados?
We should ask Judy Thomas for some advice. But according to TMB’s sources there is not much time to prepare.

But wouldn’t a higher magnitude quake normally have higher the normal magnitude aftershocks. If that taken into account then it normal activity after major quake. We also remember that this is a very active region in term of earthquake as such they normally ten to hundred little quake each day around japan. So with the release of pressure one place make make pressure increase in others for some of these earthquakes.

I take Anthony’s point above especially since a look at the reports on aftershocks of the Haiti and NZ earthquakes suggest that the magnitude of the aftershocks might be generally proportional to that of the major earthquake from which they resulted (The NZ earthquake was actually an aftershock itself of a 7.0 earlier earthquake that did little damge since it was deeper). But none of us on this blog are seismologists.

The main problem with the moon theory is in 1992 the largest quake was paltry 7.8 if indeed having the moon closer would produce strong quake there is should have been one. In fact from may 1989 to june 1994 there was no quake with magnitude of 8 or greater.

And, as we all learnt in grade school, the circumference of a circle can be calculated from its diameter using the simple equation c=d*pi.
So, let’s use some of this “fancy math” (read: grade school algebra), and make the well known universal constant pi a variable, and place the values given in the Bible into the equation:

let c = d * pi
30 = 10 * pi
30 / 10 = 10 / 10 * pi
3 = 1 * pi

AP is reporting a partial meltdown is under way at one of the nuclear plants.
If that is the case Japan can be considered unlucky as it would have suffered the fate of having two Atomic bombs detonated on the country at the dawn of the nuclear age and a nuclear meltdown a la Chernobyl.

Governments are accelerating preparedness plans across the globe, as Russia reports that 5000 new bomb shelters are being constructed in the capitol city of Moscow…
In 2006 the European Union rapidly drew up and deployed plans to build a “Doomsday Seed Vault” to store millions of seeds from countries around the world in case of a catastrophic event. Previous reports suggest that the US Government Is Preparing For Unlikely Events Like War, Catastrophic Collapse of Society, and Even Asteroids. Among the preparations, the US government, like Russia, is building underground bunkers and military bases.
The U.S. is reportedly building these bunkers so rapidly, and on such a large scale, that private contractors are unable to acquire materials to build bunkers for individual clients. In recent years we’ve also learned that the US government is one of, if not the largest buyer of survival foods like freeze dried foods and MRE’s for emergency preparedness deployment. We’ve also recently learned that Department of Homeland Security has committed to “regionalizing” supplies across 15 regional emergency supply warehouses, telling emergency officials to be prepared in 2011.
According to RT, the official story from government officials is that the bunkers being built in Russia are for the general population and are necessary because there are currently only enough shelters to house about half of Moscow’s 11 million inhabitants. Most of the shelters built before and after World War II are either dilapidated or have been converted into public areas like restaurants.
Though the bunkers are supposed to be designed to shelter the population in the event of a nuclear attack, government officials say it’s only a precaution and they do not expect such an attack or nuclear outbreak (e.g. Chernobyl) to occur. Neither RT or the Russian government provided estimates for the cost of the facilities…
A Popular Mechanics article that reviewed a number of different types of bunkers and building practices had varying prices depending on the type of shelter. Since the proposed Russian bunkers would hold roughly 1000 people each (based on the population count and other details), one could estimate that the lowest price point for a bunker this size, with basic necessities like bathrooms and reserve food for a day or two, may run in the area of around $100,000 – $200,000. This would put a conservative price tag for 5000 shelters anywhere from half a billion to a billion dollars. A significant investment, indeed.
The question that is likely on the minds of the preparedness community, especially those who have followed the rapid expansion of preparedness initiatives is, “why the haste?”
Do the European Union, United States, and Russia anticipate some event to occur in the future, or are these measures being taken strictly as precautionary measures – just in case?
One can only hope that governments are simply being proactive and not actively planning to deal with a catastrophic event unforeseen by the general public, but known to certain elements within emergency planning agencies.
This and other reports we’ve covered over the last eighteen months should serve as a warning to those who don’t believe a widespread disaster, natural or man-made, can occur.
If governments are spending billions of dollars on emergency preparations, there’s probably a good reason for it. It could be global stimulus projects during tough economic times, corrupt politicians working construction deals for their buddies, or maybe they really are planning for a disaster.
In an age where nuclear war is not supposed to be a threat because of disarmament and unified global governance, it is quite interesting that the Russians are making such a large investment.

Bunkers…fairly irrelevant…shockingly , most shockingly, I can particularly agree with Zoe on that ONE.
Bunkers may assist in specific scenarios, particularly societal breakdown….which can happen if and when the US stock market collapses again….
But, what happens if the New Madrid Fault is successfuly split by the natural attempt to break the USA into two continents, aka how the fault was created in the first place…millions /billions of years ago?
Do you really think bunkers will be particularly safe in an event of that magnitude?
How about the impact globally of such an event?
There may be spcific scenarios, maybe even an asteroid hit, that would make bunkers feasible, but others would make them irrelevant.
