The Late Federal Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti

The shooting of Federal Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti in Pakistan ominously exposes man’s inhumanity to man in the name of religion. Global societies are described as having progressed beyond the stone age, as it relates to religious tolerance we still have some way to go.

Bhatti, a Pakistani Christian, had been an outspoken critic of the misuse of the controversial Blasphemy Law and according to his colleagues he was facing death threats from those who just wanted him to shut up. Bhatti was a bold man indeed to criticise the primitive and asinine Blasphemy Law practised by Pakistan. A law which would make the most insensitive of persons – not of the Islam faith – cringe in horror at its barbaric intent. For those Christians who would beat their chests at how Bhatti died at the hands of Islamic fanatics history still records the  The Crusades.

What argument can one use to explain the fanaticism expressed by members of a religion which results in the killing of another human being because he criticizes that religion?  BU is respectful of all religions but the backwardness of the Blasphemy Law which is embedded in the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan gives little hope for peace on earth.

  1. Thanks Charles.

  2. Pakistan is a a lost state consumed by religious dogma. Many Pakistanis don’t know how to get out of this mire that is consuming their country and their lives. There are many liberal citizens who wish for a secular state, but are afraid to voice their opinion. Some do and become targets. Many lament that this was not what Jinnah the founder wanted for his country and his people. A very interesting book to read is The Empire of the Indus by Alice Albinia http://bnreview.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Reviews-Essays/Empires-of-the-Indus/ba-p/2607

We have to be on guard against fundamentalist especially when they take up political positions. This doesn’t happen overnight, it happens when the electorate is politically asleep.

  3. We are going to hear a lot more from Pakistan in the not too distant future. It is the most dangerous country in the world? Why? Because it has nuclear weapons and some nut is going to seize power there and ignite the flames of a “holy war” with India and then we descend into nuclear Armageddon. If that scenario doesn’t play out the nukes will fall into the hands of some Islamic terrorists who have sympathetic friends in the Pakistani ISI or the Pakistani military.

The two recent murders of politicians who were campaigning against the blasphemy laws made International news but in reality the majority Sunni discriminate against all religious minorities in Pakistan and that includes Shias. There is a wave of religious violence against these minorities including murder; arson and rigged prosecutions which you won’t read about in your daily newspaper.

General Zia- Ul- Haq who was President from 1977-1988 is responsible for the Islamisation of Pakistan. His Gov’t saw the extension of Sharia law throughout Pakistan and he also is responsible for the blasphemy law which has led to the death of many more people.

    It will get worse….

    The man wiv no name!!

Is anybody surprised by this action of ‘those people’?!!

  5. The issues in Pakistan are far greater than religious extremism. Although one may argue that this is the same place that Bin Laden gound ‘safe refuge’, the thing is, ANYONE is in danger in Pakistan.

It is tremendously unstavle, with a strong ewcwbr history of assassination i.e. Benazir’s Bhutto, her own brother when she was alive AND PM.

Arguably Pakistan is even more unstable than most other Middle East states.

When the administration there was seemingly supporting the US in the fight against the Taliban, the country was also supporting the Taliban as ‘safe refuge’.

Stating that the Government is one thing and the tribal leaders another is merely getting into semantics, indeed, some have their suspicions as to the true position of the Government in that scenario.

While one may argue on who should and who should not have nuclear weapons, Pakistan is one place that does make me nervous.

  6. It is true that these occurrences in Pakistan should concern us all. In fact religious persecution of minority religions have been increasing in recent months in Islamic countries; a troubling trend indeed.

There is the view that we have to appreciate they are two Pakistans, those in the villages who are considered ‘backward’ exemplified in practising Blasphemy Laws to the letter and the more educated who live in the towns/suburbs.

Perhaps this religious extremism will go away with education over time but in the meantime anything can happen.

  7. Many Pakistanis believe that Pakistan will implode. When the state of Pakistan was formed, many were backward and illiterate. Today nothing has changed. It is a collision of civilizations, the stone age vs the modern age.

  8. David

Perhaps this religious extremism will go away with education over time but in the meantime anything can happen.
    ****************
There is a great deal of “education” but most of it is through the “Madrassas” (religious schools) and no one knows how many there are in the country. They are the fount of the terrorism and religious extremism in Pakistan. The Gov’t has tried to exercise some control over them but it is no match for the powerful mullahs.
As for being an ally of the US in its fight against the Taliban, Pakistan is playing both ends against the middle, how come that the USA has not been able to locate Bin Laden or his deputy? How come Mullah Omar the leader of the Taliban is still able to issue statements at will? From time to time Pakistan hands over some minor Taliban functionary but the “big fish” are still free.
In that way the Gov’t keeps the USA at bay and their citizens (who are largely sympathetic to the Taliban) more or less happy.

  9. @Sargeant

Have always wondered how Omar is allowed to operate as a King would in a Kingdom. The guy holds press conferences with international media for godsake.

  10. Please do not forget the Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland who fought each other bitterly and to this day hate each other. Yes It was a for a unified Ireland with Irish versus the British, it also evolved into a Protestant versus Catholic one. The American Catholics supported the IRA by buying them arms to fight the British Protestants. After years of murders and bombings Sinn Feinn finally laid down their arms and became a legitimate political party.

  11. The problem with the Muslim extremist is that they don’t know how or when to laid down their arms. Their inhumanity towards each other when it comes to religious freedom of speech is tantamount to insanity.

  12. @Ac
When extremism is condoned by the state it is impossible to stop. As Sargeant said Pakistan is playing both ends against the middle.

Religion is like a powerful drug, when administered incorrectly, it will have devastating side effects. Some people become addicted while some become intolerant, others decide that they do not like the side effects and stay away from it.

The human race destiny is self-destruction. There is no escape. Our existence and being in this world was a mistake. A major error on the path of evolutionary biology or a major error by the special designer.

  14. @formally Zion: “The human race destiny is self-destruction. There is no escape. Our existence and being in this world was a mistake. A major error on the path of evolutionary biology or a major error by the special designer.

I note, with some amusement, that you have posted more than once minutes after I do.

Care to support your claim “The human race destiny is self-destruction. There is no escape…

    …with some evidence?

  15. @formerly Zion
Our existence and being in the world was a mistake. A major error on the path of evoluntionary biology or a major error by the special designer………………………………………………………………………

Question : Where is the proof to support such a theory? Who is “the special designer”

  16. @ island gal
Religion oh Religion. The word alone drums up negative thoughts .
That word should be withdrawn from all languages and replaced by Spirituality.

  17. Perhaps 40 acres is just venting his frustration at the state we find ourselves as a human race.

    Perhaps….

@CH, I have no evidence for my claim just a theory I formulated based on the absurdities and pardoxes concerning mankind.I am an agnostic with a biased toward a special designe. And even then I am perturbed to the core to even entertain this notion at times. Because how could this great designer unleashed upon this wonderful earth a animal called homo sapiens with so many flaws and vices and yet still create nature, the cosmos and the infinite with such precision, harmony and beauty.

The same could be said that we are a mutation of an evolution process gone wrong. When you look at how we treat our kind , I dear say we have nothing on the animals in the wild. It’s all that’s wrong with mankind that I staked the claim that our fate of self-annihalation is sealed.

@AC. The special desingner is whomever you may want him to be.Evolution like religion is a huge leap of faith also.

  20. Men kill in the name of love, money, power and yes, religion too. If a man kills for love should we stop loving others? If a man kills for money should we all become paupers? If a man kills for power should we have no leaders?
Funny how a man kills for religion and religion is the problem.

  21. The world has lost a man of great courage and conviction.
I hope that moderate muslims around the globe will express their disgust over this barbarous act.

  22. @New “Funny how a man kills for religion and religion is the problem.”

And just what are you trying to say? Have you forgotten that is against many religious principles to kill your fellow man? So what are you trying to say?

  23. @islandgal246

If you think it is against the principles of many religions to kill your fellow man then it stands to reason that one shouldn’t blame religion when a man kills in it’s name.
That’s the only point I’m making.

  24. @islandgal246… Please forgive me for speaking…

@new: “If you think it is against the principles of many religions to kill your fellow man then it stands to reason that one shouldn’t blame religion when a man kills in it’s name. That’s the only point I’m making.

    Some are uncomfortable with killing.

    Always.

Some others are comfortable with killing.

    Sometimes.

    Hmmm….

  25. @ Christopher Halsall

And then you can add all those people who are ‘comfortable’ with police, solders, people defending themselves or their families killing others.

    Hmmmmm indeed.

  26. When a man kills in the name of religion you say that religion is not at fault. Religion is a mind altering teaching. When administered incorrectly it will have devastating side effects on the minds of some men.

Many who kill for love, and money do not normally kill multitudes of persons or communities. Power and religion each try to conquer the will and minds of men by whatever means necessary. Many who have very little in life cling to religion, it is all they have. Many allow their religious teacher to think for them. Many teachers are also of that same mindset.

Very few followers have the guts to question their teachers and teachings. Much of mankind is like sheep following the herdsman. They will go where ever they are led without questioning. This is the dangerous part of religion. It insists on total obedience. That is when it becomes dangerous.

  27. Interesting points above from CH, New and IG246.

  28. The BBC carried a report on this matter. It was reported Bhatti requested a bullet proof car because he anticipated the danger. His request was denied by the government. He is being considered a Martyr by Pakistani Christians.

Some people would have just quit.

  29. Sikh temple shooter was Army veteran, white supremacist

    Published: August 6, 2012 .

WASHINGTON — The man who gunned down six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin on Sunday was an Army cast-off and a known white supremacist, but law enforcement officials said they had no warning of his violent temper or intentions.

Federal investigators said Wade Michael Page, 40, killed six worshippers and critically wounded three others, including a police officer, at a temple in a Milwaukee suburb before being killed in a firefight with local law enforcement. The incident was the second mass shooting in less than a month, though investigators have not linked the Wisconsin tragedy to any other event……………….. .
Page reportedly came to Milwaukee following a girlfriend, who is also affiliated with the white supremacist movement, according to Jenna Benn, the Anti-Defamation League’s assistant regional director in Chicago.

The Anti-Defamation League has been monitoring Page for years for his outspoken involvement in the white supremacist group Hammerskin Nation, which the ADL reports has a history of violence and hate crimes since it’s inception in Dallas in the 1980s.
