On New Years Day 2008, The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) introduced its 30 candidates in Oistins at what they dubbed a Cultural Extravaganza. All those present observed a massive crowd in attendance. In the aftermath of the meeting, it has generated considerable debate as to whether the sizable crowd was a result of the popular entertainment acts on show or the anticipated offerings from the politicians. Whatever the reason, the DLP was successful in attracting people who are eligible to vote to hear their message and that is the important thing to note.

NO, we are not repeating our story of yesterday!

Leader of the Opposition David Thompson in his presentation to the large audience addressed the issue of his readiness for leadership. He obviously feels that this is a key issue which will be key to the outcome of the upcoming general election on the 15 January 2008. David Thompson has been compared by his detractors to former West Indies cricketer Carl Hooper – has looked the part but has stopped short of realizing his full potential. From a school boy it was felt by many that Thompson was a future Prime Minister and the fact that he has not yet satisfy that expectation is a source of perennial discussion across the length and breath of Barbados. He has all the ingredients which successful politicians appear to need to be successful; yet he has never been able to clear the hump. He possesses charisma, good oratory and debating skills, a long track record of working in the community, a personal and family background which is devoid of questionable morals and values and the list goes on.

Why then has Thompson struggled to make the break-through all the way to the top?

The reason for the unfulfilled expectation maybe traced to the thesis of David Thompson’s speech in Oistins on New Years Day. He surprised many by parking his prepared text and proceeded to reference Barack Obama’s struggle to become the first black President of the United States who coincidentally has built his campaign on the need for Americans to Stand for Change’. Obama is the product of a Black father and a White mother which explains his ‘light’ complexion. Thompson referred in his speech to the dilemma of many Black Americans who don’t think Obama is Black enough and to many Whites, they too feel he is not White enough. The consequence of it all could be the alienation of a candidate who many feel is imminently qualified to lead the US of A.

Thompson and Obama shares a common concern.

Thompson who has ‘suffered’ the same fate as Obama, compounded by the fact that he was born in England, and in the Barbadian vernacular is frequently referred to as a ‘red-man’ has had to struggle with the distrust by some Barbadians. David Thompson confided to the Oistins crowd that the questioning by some Barbadians of his commitment and ability to lead is unfounded. He proceeded to list his resume which he traced to a school boy to try to dispel the deep-rooted perception. Thompson can take encouragement from the victory by Obama last night in the Iowa Caucus. This is a significant victory against the background that Obama has trailed Hillary Clinton in the nomination race to represent the Democrats in the upcoming Presidential Election.

The colloquialism of the ‘red’ Barbadian should be the basis of a case study for our friends on the ‘Hill’. We have a ‘feeling’ that Thompson’s light-shade has been responsible for the enigmatic relationship he has had to suffer throughout his political life in Barbados. The victory by Obama has demonstrated at this early stage that most challenges can be overcome.

    What happened to the surprise?

A few days ago I heard David Thompson state that there would be a “surprise” at the launch of the DLP campaign in Oistins on Wednesday.

    What happened to the “surprise”?

  2. BU,

    You are getting desperate indeed.

Barack Obama in white majority America is not the same as David Thompson in black majority Barbados.

Obama is a first-timer in the American presidential race.

Thompson has been rejected more than once already in his bids to become the prime minister of Barbados.

America is America and Barbados is Barbados.

Again, what happened to the “surprise” which Thompson promised would be delivered on Wednesday night?

  3. Hi David – I’m using the comments rather than anonymous email as I wanted to get this to you right away.

We’re doing up a story on the DLP’s Integrity Legislation plans. The DLP’s com director sent us three Word (.doc) documents that were handed out at the conference in paper form.

The electronic documents that we received were not “cleaned” of various information and we’re sure that the DLP would be horrified if they saw what the documents reveal in their “properties” and versions sections.

We’ve made a decision that we will not post the documents for download but will just cut and paste them into our article. Neither will we be revealing what information was contained in the properties and other hidden sections of the documents…. (at this time anyway)

We’re advising you so you can make your own decision if the electronic docs were also sent your way.

IF the DLP sent these electronic documents anywhere else, well… we will sure hear about it! And someone gonna get their ass fired!

    Cheers!

    Thanks Marcus

  4. Does anybody know what Obama’s policies are???? I’m not impressed by his looks or eloquence. I want to know his policies and I still don’t know what they are. Does anyone????

  5. Desperation~we write based on how we feel. Unlike the Nation, VOB, Advocate, we don’t have to rely on the advertising dollar which surely influences the editorial content they put out there.

  6. David,

You raise a very good point about the advertising dollar.

Did you hear that excellent contribution yesterday from the woman who called Brass Tacks and eventually ended by asking whether the public should start taking out PAID ADVERTISEMENTS in order to air their views during election time?

We as BFPE very much agree with her. Comments from the public are deemed as “canvassing” and openly discouraged. Yet the same VOB (which we otherwise support) has been bombarding us with loud and annoyingly repetitive political songs from both the BLP and the DLP which they label as “paid advertisements”. It is a very powerful exposure of the role of MONEY in our politics.

We can’t wait till the elections are over and done with…. both BLP and DLP are overdoing it with the every-minute political party ads. How much money does it cost for one of those spots anyway? If we weren’t committed to wiping out BFP we would assign someone to count the number of ads aired in one afternoon and multiply it by the NORMAL cost for such spots. These two leading parties are both spending a real lot of money, which we are not altogether pleased about.

  7. Desperation what the radio stations are practicing is what the laws of Barbados bound them to do. Barbadians needed to complain long before the election bell was rung. Maybe whichever party forms the government they can look at reviewing the relevant law.

  8. Does Thompson “know” something that others are not perceiving? As you have stated in your article, “Thompson can take encouragement from the victory by Obama last night in the Iowa Caucus. This is a significant victory against the background that Obama has trailed Hillary Clinton in the nomination race to represent the Democrats in the upcoming Presidential Election.” If this victory by Obama is a “sickness”, “Oh! What A Sickness/Feeling!”
“Obama Sickness” seems to be sweet!

I find it intriguing that at a recent town hall meeting the Prime Minister laid the blame for the high cost of living at the feet of the merchants. I know I am sounding like a stuck record, but in the absence of a vigorous competition policy merchants will accumulate market power and use it to maximize their profits. The Fair Trading Commission has been far too timid. We need some strong leadership in this area.

  10. David:

I am suspicious of Marcus’ motives. He said “Hi David – I’m using the comments rather than anonymous email as I wanted to get this to you right away.

What is he really trying to say? For a person who claims to promote freedom of speech, and freedom of association, is comments seem to be sending a contrary message.

  11. Yet another political master stroke from David Thompson. He must have known that many Barbadians were following Barack’s US presidential run. His simple reference to racial and class struggles that he has faced and that Barack has face was innocent and believable, now that Barack has registered his first primary win when he was not expect too, when the polls suggest that he wouldn’t, will undoubtedly be use by him to further his case. Thompson has yet again shown the usefulness of planting a seed of information to reap the benefits later on.

  12. Linchh:

BFP is not as popular amongst bajan posters as BU has become, so this may be the reason for their approach.

…..why use the pretentse of freedom of speech to decry BFP withholding the worddoc properties? If Mia’s office and employees can give Hardwood infomation to Thompson, why can’t others engage in activities to aid him too? Monkey see monkey doo.

Can’t say that I follow your comparison or your line of reasoning here.

In the photos in your header Thompson and Arthur look the same complexion. Maybe they’re not but was not Tom Adams lighter than Thompson? He was voted in at least twice by Barbadians who may have had more reason to distrust him.

“The colloquialism of the ‘red’ Barbadian should be the basis of a case study for our friends on the ‘Hill’. ”

    ?????

Don’t see why the colloquialism of the “red Barbadian” should be studies any more than the colloquialism of the “black Barbadian” or “white Barbadian”. They are all equally inaccurate and bizarre classifications.

Don’t see how “red” = “distrust”. Perhaps the distrust, if there is indeed distrust is coming from other quarters.

Anyway, I have a “feeling” that the inability of David Thompson to lead the DLP to victory is a result of much more complexed matters than “redness”.

Does anybody know what Obama’s policies are???? I’m not impressed by his looks or eloquence. I want to know his policies and I still don’t know what they are. Does anyone????

stop playing de sarcastic game and go on youtube and listen to de man just like most people

sometimes i wonder if people do listen to candidates or to news reporters reporting on candidates.

true barbados is bim and america is usa, but hey, politics will always be politricks but i do see a difference in obama and thompson, some may see different but thats life.

david thompson happen to be the director of blp prosecution always whining and complaining and ridiculing what the blp has done, kudos for that, but is all politics about showing where the other has fallen, hmmm, learn from the usa campaigns and see where obama stood out

that man barak obama gave a hope of a dream back to people who listen to him, not people who heard people who listened.
obama showed where the country is and what needs to be done to repair the broken holes caused by the bush-clinton-bush administration. mostly the bush admin tho.

thompson is and was always ready just like the entire dlp party for debates, but are they really ready to manage barbados?

we talk about change, yes change is good, but what is there to change too? so far all i see are new faces in the game but up to now i have not received any reason to change the govt. thompy should take a lesson from obama, im not saying you should not reveal the wrongs of the other govt, but how de hell you expect to win if you only playing pin de tail on de donkey politics? you must give people back that hope again that life will be better.

to ask what are obama’s policies are, really show how illiterate one can become, all candidates’ policies can be found online on their websites, thats like having your browser open and messaging someone on msn and asking them where to find an ipod online.

  15. Though I was intrigued by your article i cant say that I agree with your analysis.
Bajans do share a certain level of distrust for Thompson but reducing that your analysis to his race falls short of what I believe is the real reason for their distrust.

For one didnt Tom Adams (truly a great leader) fall into the “red man” category?

Bajans distrust Thompson because in many cases he makes us lose faith in him so that someone like me who is looking for a change in government will still end up voting for the Bees simply because it seems like the lesser evil.

Look at the article “Nailed” in todays Nation and Thompson’s disregard for private and government property.

Or look at the handling of the Mascoll affair which many Bajans still remember. In todays Nation Thompson alleges that the BLP dipped into the DLP and removed Mascoll. How true is that statement? As a bajan who remembers that episode i now find it hard to trust that Thompson will act honourably as PM.

Furthermore Thompson has shown himself to be irresponsible as Opposition leader. A few days ago, he made serious unproven alligations against the BLP. Accusing them of sending an agent to cut their wire. Imagine the potential such an accusation could have on an audience (in some countries that could have led to violence agasint BLP supporters…take a look at what is happening in Kenya). Thompson must have known that no wires were cut (accidentally or otherwise) when making that statement and when in doubt should have aired on the side of caution by not making such an accusation..

He is right to think that leadership is a key issue in this election and should realize that his actions almost on a daily basis cast doubt on his ability to lead responsibily.

  16. Are we really and truely living in a DEMOCRACY or are we living in a DICTATORSHIP.

Here we are now hearing that the debate slated for today has been called off because Mr Dale Marshall’s non appearance at C B C today to partake in the debate between he and Michael Lashley.

Now when the ruling party can be this arrogant and ill caring to the people it serves it is sad day in our political life of our nation.

It is also my understanding that the likelyhood of the other debates coming off is very unlikely because a letter received yesterday from CBC stating that they were not in agreement with the request to have the two leaders debate each other, so as we have said before the arrogance and callous nature of this gang of crooks is showing more and more,.

NOW PLEASE TELL ME WHO IS RUNNING FROM THESE DEBATES?

IT CERTAINLY APPEARS THAT THE DLP ARE READY WILLING AND ABLE BUT THE BLP ARE RUNNING SCARED AND ARROGANT.

    David,

I think the issue of race and the perception of David Thompson is a bit of a “red” herring here. Much of the perception of Mr. Thompson is bound up in the experience in the 1990’s. Also the BLP has been very successful with tagging him with the “secret deal” bluff that he made. If it had worked it would have been a brilliant political strategy, but as history goes, it didn’t work.

I think any analysis of his political career should take into account these factors. Much in the same way it would be wrong to talk about Tom Adams’s career without the “mini budget” of the 1980’s.

If Owen could not speak in parliament after the budget debate but only found his voice after the DLP abdicated, why would you think there would ever be a debate among the two leaders?.
Owen is not going to risk that one again unless there is a change in methods.

  19. is it an official thing that the debate tonight is off?

  20. In order to be President of America, one has to appeal to the majority population. It appears that race does play a major part, in America, hence a strident black politician, with views which would appeal to the majority of black voters, might not appeal to enough white voters for him to be President.

Obama has to be inclusive and adopt a principled stance, which does not alienate the majority vote. His task is therefore more difficult, than Hilary Clinton a “woman” candidate. That he has been able to advance to this stage, and take Iowa is a credit to him and his team. There is a long road ahead, and many hidden sand traps in the way.

I fear a black President of America, might not be able to do as much for blacks, as a “liberal” white President, that is a dilemma Obama will ultimately have to face.

I am sure, it is a task he would rather grapple with, than not have.

  21. The USA is a republic where eligible voters participate in PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS to elect a president.

Barbados is a parliamentary democracy where eligible voters participate in GENERAL ELECTIONS to elect members of parliament. Bajans DO NOT have any direct elections to choose the prime minister!

Wishing in Vain is a LIAR. CBC has just issued a statement on the debate matter.
They increased the number of debates from THREE to FOUR. The BLP agreed to this. The DLP disagreed and stated that they wanted to change the format of the debates.

    ~B~F~P~E~

  22. For those of you who refuse to accept that there is a sociological issue with how ‘pale skin’ Barbadians are viewed by ‘black’ Barbadians need to reevaluate. Tom Adams is not a good example given his rich political legacy which compensated his redness :-). Also we should clarify that his redness is not being held up as the sole factor for his prior failures at the poll.

  23. The CBC statement reported that the DLP wanted TWO debates between the leaders and TWO debates between other party representatives.

Wishing in Vain is a LIAR.

    ~B~F~P~E~

  24. I’m not sure I understand the comparison. The late Tom Adams was a “red man” and of mixed race and a very confident man at that!
Did Bajans reject him because of it? i don’t think so. Fine orator and debater he might be, Thompson is not a party leader. The Dipper might have genuinely commited an error of judgement by leaving him in charge.

  25. BajanLondoner we want to correct something. Thompson’s DLP party members nominated and elected him as leader of the party. It is the reason for the major struggle which occurred between Mascoll and Thompson. So that even if barrow erred it means that other have as well.

  26. Yardbroom, the reason why blacks have not yet reached the ultimate is simply because many held thoughts and views just like you, without faith in yourself.

for many years blacks have been intimidated by stupid words called racism and slavery, if people like you would put those two words out of existence and see life tru the big screen and not the peephole, there will be many black men and women in forbes list of the world’s richest people.

have you ever wondered what will happen when you take away the race, religion, attitudes and character of any man? what is left?

if you say politics in the usa or should i refrain racism in the usa is negative on blacks from the white folks, think again dude. iowa is 95% white.

plus, do you watch movies, listen to music, watch cable tv, or surf the net?

if each time something happen and we play the racial card and cry racism who do you think is racist?

if we keep crying a black man will never be president what do you think that is saying about you as a man who suppose to be saying black power, its very confusing to someone who will be learning from you.

and there is no such thing as blacks in america, did you hear barack obama, there are americans in america, not black nor white.

the man gives hope for change which thompson aint even yet declare.

  27. Kadri, you got my vote! Run for office, man. Bim needs leaders like you.

  28. I reply to yardbroom;
I think you have it all wrong regarding your perception of Barack Obama. His base is predominantly middle class educated people, black and white, Republican, Democrat and Independent. If you were to read the many editorial commentaries in him you will certainly have a different view of him.
His message of “Change” is now on the lips of all the other candidates of both parties.

Lets hope his success at this point gives blacks that ray of hope they so desperately need, especially the young ones who think they are their wits end.

  29. Kadri, maybe u see saying, “it’s time for America to change”, as being a statement of his policies!!!!

We’ve very different ideas of what a set of political policies are!!!!

  30. I will invite anyone, to read my submission and find a single sentence, in which I have written a negative personal comment, of any kind about Obama. If they can, please point it out to me, and I will address it.

    Kadri
I know little of you, and would not be so presumptuous, as to say what faith you have in yourself, or what you have achieved or otherwise. I have always taken the view that – metaphorically – what is written on the page, is more important than a personal attack of any kind, which I”never” engage in.

As to my own personal achievements – and what I have done for black people – you might be surprised, but that is of no consequence here.

What is “important” is what has been written in this format, and our interpretation of those words.

My submission, was an analysis of the realities of the political situtation in America. Not what I would like it to be, or what it should be, it was a factual account.

My position on Obama is quite clear, I would like him to win, and go on to be President of America, but that does not preclude me from making an objective analysis of the situation as it is.

We often confuse our wishes, and interlace them with an objectivity that is not there.

  31. yardbroom i can vow and say that you do not follow up on american politics if you are saying this, or its either that you are racist. if your statements were true obama would have not won the iowa state. we people gotta admit to ourselves, we who speak of race and cry race in everything is racist. al sharpton n jesse jackson run for elections every single election and they dont even get an 8% vote in a primary or caucus.

but i guess obama in your eyes is not good enough.

if obama dont win the first thing people gonna say is because he was black, thats crap, so what did people say when al gore lost the general election?

come on people, the minute you have little hopes or dreams in a person, or a group, is the minute you say all men were not made equal, and thats contrary to thomas jefferson’s writing.

dr king ststed one day america will have a black president and thats when it will matter no more of his skin colour, but look who is saying he will never be because he is black and they will never give a black man presidency, BLACK PEOPLE, why? they are still with the belief that blacks cannot and will not reach to the top, think again, look at oprah, will smith, samuel l jackson, who made them who they are, the white man with the money.

they could have been replaced with sylvester stallone, kathy lee and jim carrey, but you know why it never happened, because white people prove to us that we black people crucify n kill each other more than the white folks.

have an open mind on life and not just a political view.

  32. race matters only to a few, and barack is proving it each day

  33. Kadri
Let us get to facts, and not a rant.

    (1) I asked you where in my submission, did I say anything negative about Obama?

    (2) I have stated ,I would like Obama to become President.

You stated: …”al sharpton an Jessie Jackson run for elections every single election and they dont even get an 8% vote in primary caucus”…

Student of American politics, as you think you are… Jessie Jackson made history in 1988 when he won 13 primaries and caucuses
in the race for the Democratic Party’s nomination, earning 6.6 million votes and an influential voice at the Party’s convention.

You do not know as much, as you think you do about American politics. I concentrate on facts.

Only this morning, I read a statement out of Washington, commenting on Obama’s Iowa
    victory, it stated.

“The legacy of America’s history of slavery and racial persecution has cast a long shadow, with only three African-American Senators and two black Governors elected since the aftermath of the 1861-65 US Civil War.

The Americans do think race plays a part in their politics, you are free to think otherwise. I rest my case.

  34. The Americans do think race plays a part in their politics, you are free to think otherwise. I rest my case.

that speaks much for a BLACK man who won a WHITE state

listen yardbroom let me tell you clearly why you think so little of the black colour.

all these years we black people were told we cannot, its not your time, you are not ready yet and you count your chickens before they are hatched, even our family members tell this to us and we tend to look at ourselves as losers and never be able to get to the top.

do you think dr king would endorse your comment on obama?

dr king fought for this day when a BLACK man would run for president and it would not matter of his skin colour by the other races, and people like you whom i presume is black also is still suffering from the slavery oppression syndrome.

wake up dude, stop reading editorial readings from writers, they can write what they want and open your eyes and see the facts, we black people are doing more damage to our race than the whites are.

i know what its like to live among white people in america, and trust me dude, i felt more like in an earthly heaven than among my own black people who would try to keep me from reaching my goal.

but hey look at you for example, it all starts with a simple thought, not action

in law, its called the mens rea, which is the mental intent of a crime, if you can have a clean and pure thought, you will have clean and honest results from your actions.

i support obama not bcos he is black like me, if that was so, i would have supported al “hypocrite” sharpton.

  35. im not saying you said something negative about obama, but that simple doubt that a man will not bcom president bcos of his race is showing me that you do believe in that word cannot.

as long as there is life, anything can happen.

if something is a thought, it was either done before, or it will be done.

im not gonna say if obama lose he did bcos he is black. im not gonna say if he wins its bcos he is black either, the man is just different in his approach in everything.

the best support we can give each other is that support of faith and hope for each other.

not the disbelief, just suppose he won, what will you say other than congrats?

  36. The People's Democratic Congress Avatar
    The People’s Democratic Congress

Make now doubt about it, this BLP Government will be VOTED TO HELL OUT of office Next Election. In recent time, in many countries of this world, and where democratic elections are held, many once incumbent governments would have been changed by the majority of their respective voters. These voters in those countries would have been sick and tired of the ineptitude and incompetance of these governments, and therefore decided to change them for other governing groups!!

So, just as Barack Obama has long been promoting change in the status quo establishment in Washington, and it appears that multitudes of voters in the US are accepting his call (we at this point in time must congratulate him and others on his and their Iowa Caucus victory), we in the People’s Democratic Congress(PDC) have long been urging voters in Barbados to resolve to change this status quo political leadership and management in Barbados. Already, it is clear that many thousands of voters in Barbados will heed our call.

Come Jan 16, 2008, we know that many thousands of voters will have heeded our calls to change this status quoish, wretched and insensitive Owen Arthur led BLP Government in the election, and will have gone and changed it for another. Barbados and Barbadians need a total break from this BLP. It is the worst Government we have had since 1966. Good riddance!!

    See you at the polls!!

  40. I was listening to the meeting until about 30 mins. ago when Dr. David Estwick was speaking via the internet and then the feed was lost. Why? And the DLP website seems to be down as well.

  41. For me as a black person only using ur words, I don’t see money as a measure of success or a means to power, and if any black person who was not to influence bu the white man way of life, honestly he would feel the same way, and I think it has to do with back in Africa before as they say colonialism. They where kings and queens and kingdoms, and cultures and ways of life so different from the western world,
But on the other hand the white man sees money as power, so if u wanna be on forbes go ahead brother,
But that’s why life as we see it today is so, we put to much value in money that don’t even worth the paper its printed on and also most the time have no bullion to back it lol, plain paper and ink and we sell our souls and our brother man to achieve these this, and by these things we call it sucess

  42. so are you saying everything was free then?
in those days of king and queens in africa, trading were done with salt, silver, gold, coal, copper, bronze, should i go on?

money is a more lighter fashion of trade, how do you think it would look in this day now technology has gone to higher heights to see people buying stuff with silver and gold?

i guess you never researched how money actually came about huh.

and if u say money is the whites man way of riches, dude, we came from africa bcos our fellow black man betrayed us and sold us to the whites bcos the white man could not get us without a failed attempt.

just note, we black people were the first people to enslave humans and moses came and led slaves to freedom, but it was not a black and white issue then, it was a kingdom seeking superiority and domination.

dont just read quotes, read the entire book next time.

  43. David
I have observed very few indicators in Barbados and the Caribbean to support your suggestion that Thompson’s race has been a significant handicap to the acceptance of him as a leader. I would suggest, when I look at Adams, Gonsalves, Mitchell ( St. Vincent’s), Anthony, Compton, the Manleys, Bustamante and Seaga, that being of lighter hue, strange as it may seem, is a political advantage. All the aforementioned countries have a populace that is predominantly dark-skinned and yet these leaders have dominated our landscape in the past 50 years. I would suspect that being a short man like Owen is more of a disadvantage. I would also suggest that Sir Lloyd Sandiford would not have been so vilified and disrespected if he were of lighter hue. (It has been said in political circles that Bobby Morris would not have made it as leader because he was too dark-skinned to be accepted by Barbadians as their leader). In my book the reason why Thompson’s leadership qualifications have been questioned is because he keeps missing great opportunities like Oistins to articulate his vision or for that matter to systematically expose the deficiencies and questionable practices of the current government. Then there were the Jennifer Lazslo and secret deal foul ups.

That said he was a mere lad when he rose (perhaps to early) to leadership of the DLP and made some of these mistakes. He is still a young man and I have seen signficant improvements in his judgment. He may well blossom into to a worthy leader.

the dlp can’t seem to get their web site working. remember they never mentioned the word telecommuications in their manifesto. maybe they do not have a clue about such a subject

  45. lol, maybe if they had taken my email seriously the website would have the blp site looks crappier than how it is, then again i have yet to see a govt owned website that will make you want to visit again, no kind of appeal.

web developers either dont have any creativity or they are just lazy
