Sick Companies |

Would you believe that the young lady that send out this email is about to be fire for sending this from her work email address. Yes xxxxxxx B’dos Ltd is in the process of firing the girl. Is this sick or what, but I am not surprise they don’t care about their employees so why would they care if one of their employees eat a worm.

The comment was posted on BU late last night. It would certainly be a travesty of justice if this brave young lady who was mistreated by the Chefette Restaurant management would end-up being a victim. To be honest we cannot comprehend why her workplace would even want to consider the option to discipline the young lady. Even if she sent the email from her workplace, so what? It was a constructive act designed to communicate a horrible experience. We might add that it could all have been avoided if the management of Chefette Restaurant would have been more sympathetic.

So where do we go from here.

The employer of the unfortunate victim is an offshore company, we have no doubt that the publicity gained from associating themselves with the cowardly act of terminating the services of this employee would not be a desirable thing. BU hope that we do not have to name and shame this company if they follow through on firing a Barbadian who had the courage to represent her rights. What if she used a few minutes of company time?

We all use the telephone to make personal calls or leave the office for a quick smoke. We expect the employer should watch against abuse of company time but at the same time exercise discretion. If this girl is fired we will consider it an act against all consumers in Barbados.

Minister Eastmond, over to you.

  1. This is one of the major reasons people in Barbados do not like to speak up and out. There are afraid of victimization and rightfully so, if we use this case as a prime example.

My question is, is there anywhere in the employer’s Policy and Procedures where it is stated that under no circumstances, employees are allowed to use the telephone, PC, etc., without permission granted by a superior. I’m sure this employee is not the first, but may be the last, to use the company PC or other property for personal use.

If I were the employee in this case, I would not answer/talk to anyone without having the Union and/or an Attorney available.

Chefette and the employer of this employee needs to be boycott; but then again, among the midst are many coward bajans.

I wish the employee good luck in fighting this assinine case.

    When will victimization cease ?
It happens when you say the wrong thing about the PM or any of his goon squad or the gov’t for that matter.
It happens within the business houses as we are seeing in this case.
There can be little doubt that this lady has a valid issue and concern and she choose to use the web as her medium to get her message out to the general public, more power to her well done young lady.

  3. No, Cheffette continues to profit as a direct result of Barbadian refusal to keep more of what they earn and protect their health in the process by preparing thier own Lunch. I am paid more than the PM and in USD and i still take to work my lunch. Here they are presented with third reason to stay away from Cheffette if the first two are not doable, but will they unite against an all to often used tool to silence and shut them up? probably not.

  4. What is the name of her company?

  5. Nevermind – I found out that it is allegedly Marcus Evans – an event planning and management company – offshore IBC from what I understand.

Yes an American company operating in Barbados with an American outlook and manner of doing business.

  7. Many offshore companies like to set up shop in the Caribbean cause they know that they can get away with a lot of bull that they dare would not risk in their homeland, for fear of the consequences.

This story needs to be followed by the giant media houses such as, the Nation, VOB, etc, where it can get more publicity.

Someone should get in touch with Senator Eastmond, the Health Officials to ruffle Cheffette feathers.

  8. She was incorrect and out of line in using a company email to conduct personal business. She should have used a private email. Make no bones about it. You ARE NOT to use company assets to carry out unauthorized actions. Any one remember such small things as the Rule of Law? Law and Order? Rules?

However the company is using a steamroller to squash a bug. She should have simply been given a stern warning not to do it again.

People simply need to be more compassionate to one another.

All that said, I for one will be boycotting Chefette with my wallet specifically for this incident. My only remorse is that I could not include M.E. in there as well. They have no place in this society.

Neither does the Management of Chefette Resturants.

  9. BU keep us informed as to the outcome, if they go ahead with this firing, then something needs to be done to bring this matter some more attention. I for one will make a strong lobby against Chefette if it happens.

Oh shut to fcuk up. Peopl like you with that BS need to understand that you have people working for you and not robots. Any Company that i work for that decides to get ape shit about using email i will leave. It is time that employees demonstrate to these aholes running these sleazy companies that they need us equally as much as we need them. No favours here, it is strictly business

  12. There is a direct link between Cheffette’s profitabilty and the rise to near epidemic levels of obesity, and other life style deseases amongst Barbadian. I believe that Barbadians can prolong their lives by demonstrating solidarity with this young lady by reducing their patronage of these fast food joints. I see a win win outcome for Barbadians and this young lady.

  13. I don’t agree with using your compaines email to your advantage, whatever the subject. Doing such could bring a negative impact on your employer, as much as we would not like to belive this, its a reality. No matter if you wish to accept it, you represent your empolyer in all your actions, be it at work or outside of work. This is Barbados people not the USA.

  14. By the way Adrian2, I belive your over paid for someone with such a stink mout/attitude.

On the subject of food, I have been hearing from those in the know that there is full time health inspector on duty at the Hilton Hotel because of very poor health standards in operation at that Hotel location.
From reports reaching me it is reported that nearly every time there is a function held there people end up being made sick from the food there, it seems that as a result of these numerous instances of food poisioning the ministry of health has place an inspector on location around the clock.
It is sad when we can have a flagship hotel as this one is with such a reputation as this one has.

  16. Marcus Evans has a horrible reputation as an employer in Barbados. The turn-over rate is exceedingly high and what is promised at interviews is never delivered once you come on as an employee.

  17. Adrian 2. You have a stink mout in trut. However you make some very valid points.

  18. I fired Cheffette a long time ago, and I am inviting all right-thinking Barbadians to join me. Cheffette’s contribution to GDP/employment numbers will not be missed and is easily replaced by a few hardworking Barbadian entrepreneurs who fry better chicken, make better rotis and pizza, and if the children want a play park they can hit the beach, King George, Three Houses etc.

  19. The reality whether we like it or not is that our modern lifestyles encourage convenience. With many households at work there is little time to cook etc. The race to maintain decent a high standard of life, lack of spare time and cultural pollution which we can tag to TV, studying overseas, travel, tourism etc has made sure that our generation is well and truly hooked to fast food. BU just don’t eat fast food any more so it does not matter to us but we see the young generation lapping it up. Chefette/KFC food is eaten because it is about brand, the lime and being cool.

I can guarantee you that as a result of a life long habit of sustained detail dental/oral hygiene that i do not have a stink mouth, and if Owen Arthur who has a far worst propensity to cuss and carry on than i do, if he can be a millionaire, then i hope you don’t mind if i dismiss your belief. At any rate your personal beliefs are your business so i honestly don’t care.

These comments about email use policy are being used out of context. Such policy is poorly applied to the incident at hand. This is clearly an attempt to victimize this young lady. If Lawyers were accessible to the average citizen in Barbados, and i was that Lawyer, I would seek to ascertain which came first, the email policy or the urge to victimize this young lady into silence. Was there an enforement of the policy berfore this incident? Where emails sent in the past that are similar in nature to the one in question, who sent it, what repercussion did they suffer etc. In fact i would seek to have access to all server log files of emails sent and received to prove my case and also to determine if there was collusion between the managements of the companies involved. There is a malicious attempt to deny this young lady the right to have her macaroni without weebles in it and to have a complete refund if it occurs, and this by the nature of how things are prepared in these fast food joints may have had the potential to effect the health of the public. Is this the way public health is handle as a best practice in Barbados?

  23. I have no problem with the young lady spreading the word of the chefette issue, I applaud her for that. However When you are at work, YOU ARE AT WORK!. Do you think it was just an “email” ? she probaly spent the rest of the week focusing on chefette and not her job. If it was a first offence, then maybe they are to harsh, but it might be a regular habit of hers (and we don’t know all the facts) and if it is, I would terminiate her ass. As you said its my personal opinion, so don’t worry about it. ; )

Typical response. I will speculate that the question was asked “How do we make this go away” and as a result this silly focus on an email use policy is about to replace a more serious issue of public health practices, and poor customer service by a leading food service enterprise in Barbados. If you don’t believe me that you have been caught up “hook, line and sincker ” by this false issue of email use, check where you choose to highlight and emphasis in your comments, by way “CAPS” use.

  25. The issue of email use was brought up by BFP not I. The fact is that indiscriminate use of company internet services is a world wide issue. People look real busy, working tirelessly when on the computer, however quite a few are just surfing the web at work. So much for productivity.

  26. We agree with Adrian2 on this issue of email. There is the letter and spirit of the law. If a survey is taken any part of the world it would show that employees use the Internet for personal use so what the girl did is not unique. As employees company time is “abused” from time to time. Some ppl take coffee breaks, smoke breaks, a personal chat on the telephone, a walk about the office and the list is long. At the end of the day it is about abuse of privileges and the company must always show discretion in this regard.

Like Adrian2 wrote we need to keep our eye on the ball and take care of the bigger issue.

What is indiscriminate and a world wide issue, is unbridle capitalistic corporations, increasing the work day while make these rediculuous demands about personal time. Do you know that in some countries the so called 8 hour work day is really 9 hours in the least? 8 hours of work plus 1 for lunch. Does anybody still work 8 hours a day? What about productivity? By any measurment, if there was to be an aggregate of worldwide workers productivity it must be at a all time high, given what anyone with eyes can see in terms of corporate profitibility, increase GDP of countries, and share numbers of infastructural developments, and production of material wealth and services being dump on the world retail markets. Soon the 24 hour work day will arrive in Barbados, and i can gaurantee you that it will be at it’s core the result of greed pure and simple. Remember this, we are now only focusing on the near slave labour that exist in China, but you must not forget that china has the been the world manufacture for almost anything for the last 30-40 years, yet things are not getting cheaper. Where is the money going? to whom? and how can you tell?

CR to err is human, and doing the right thing is a passion of mind. Another passion of mind is to get emotional on….an emotive subject, and it is a result of this that i swore, not at you but at the comments made which does not make it any less worst. I apologize to you for that.

  29. A2, We can agree to disagree on this topic. I too can understand getting emotional, apology accepted
